How to cut and fold a boxspring to fit it up a narrow staircase

Nobody likes moving. Of the many annoying things about moving, few are as frustrating as when can’t even fit your furniture into your new home.

Older homes in Lancaster city can be especially challenging, as I discovered when trying to get a queen-sized boxspring up the stairs of a circa-1932 duplex.

After being advised that there are split box springs that come in two pieces and would easily fit up the stairs, someone else mentioned that you could actually cut and fold a boxspring and take it up stairs. Online, I found several video demonstrations as well as some step-by-step instructions. We decided to give it a try.

What you will need Needle-nosed pliers

Flathead screwdriver

Handsaw

Rope or bungee cords

3 straight metal brackets

four 2-by-1-foot pieces of lumber

Wood screws

Drill

Drill bits

Staple gun

Two people

A fulcrum

About 3 hours

Step 1: Remove the staples

Use a flathead screwdriver to loosen the staples and a needle-nosed pliers to pull out the staples fastening the boxspring’s backing. There are a lot of staples, so this will take a while. We laid the boxspring across two sawhorses in the back patio for this and made sure to collect the staples as we went.

Step 2: Reveal the boxspring

Peel away the backing when you’ve removed enough staples. This is what a boxspring looks like.(We left the backing attached to one side.)

Step 3: Cut the wood supports

You’ll only be cutting three pieces of wood, so a handsaw is fine. Find the center point and make your cuts there.

Step 4: Bend the boxspring around a fulcrum

You’ll be bending the boxspring around on itself, like you’re closing a book. To do that, you’ll need a fulcrum — a stable support of some kind. A metal support column for the patio was an ideal fulcrum for us. You could also use the corner of a wall or even a person, I guess.

Step 5: Fold the boxspring in half

To help close the boxspring, we tied rope to the wood supports on the end so that we could tie it to the other side once it was closed. Here’s for the most surprising part: the boxspring folded pretty easily. It was no problem for two people.

You could probably also use duct tape, but we used rope to tie everything in place. It isn’t good for the spring to be closed for too long, so don’t dawdle about carrying it up the stairs and unfolding it in the room.

Step 6: Reflatten the boxspring

Lay the boxspring flat on the floor and place something heavy on it to encourage it to start straightening out.

We took a trip to Home Depot for supplies while this was happening, but if you already have your supplies, wait maybe an hour.

Step 7: Reinforce the boxspring

We screwed metal reinforcing brackets over each of the three wood cuts. We also screwed four, 4-by-1 pieces of lumber next to each place where we cut the wood.

We wanted the reinforcing wood to span several cross beams, but wound up not going quite the whole way, which probably didn’t matter.

Step 8: Staple everything back together

Use a staple gun to get everything back together. With the extra supports, the boxspring will actually be stronger than it was before.

Conclusion

Cutting and folding a boxspring to fit up a narrow staircase is easier than it sounds. Plus, it’s a really neat thing to know how to do, either for yourself or a friend you’re helping with a move. Good luck.

Cutting and Folding a Box Spring

When you have the box spring in its desired location, lay it face down on the floor and push the middle down to flatten it out again. You’ll notice in the pictures that I cut off the corners of the frame that were jutting out, to get past a sticky corner. This is okay since we’re reinforcing those sections anyway. Stand along the bend in the wire to flatten it out as much as possible.

Cut four pieces of wood long enough to span between the middle four crossbeams. Fasten them to the crossbeams with the wood screws, adjacent to the cut rails. You’ll notice that I split the wood pretty badly, but I put in enough screws that it felt secure. I couldn’t find my drill bits in the moving chaos, but I should’ve spent a little more time looking. Always pre-drill your holes, kids!

How to Break Down a Mattress and Box Spring

How to Cut Up a Mattress for Easy Recycling or Disposal

An estimated 20 million mattresses are tossed into landfills every year, and many dispose of them because they are simply difficult to get rid of.

However, a mattress is composed mainly of steel, wood and cotton – most of which can be recycled. For instance, wood can be shaved into wood chips or used for a variety of projects at home. Not only does this benefit the environment, but it also conserves valuable resources.

California, Connecticut and Rhode Island all require that mattresses be recycled and at least 20 other states have mattress recycling facilities. But, it’s possible that you’ll be charged a fee to break it down depending on where you take it. To save money, you can break it down yourself fairly easily and recycle the appropriate materials.

Read on to learn how to break down your mattress step by step.

How to Break Down Your Mattress in 6 Steps

PRO TIP: Before you begin tearing apart your mattress, we suggest gearing up with a pair of cut-resistant gloves and protective eyewear to keep loose particles from getting in your eyes. If you have the space available, take the mattress outside to avoid a mess in your home.

What Tools Do You Need to Break Down Your Mattress and Box Spring?

Utility knife, seam ripper and/or shop box cutter to cut fabric.

Heavy pair of pliers to remove staples.

Bolt cutter and/or wire clippers to cut springs.

Saw for cutting the box spring frame.

Boxes and/or bags to hold mattress parts.

Step 1: Cut and Pull the Cord From the Mattress Edges

Find where the piping ends and use a seam ripper or utility knife to break the thread. Remove the cord by pulling it away from the mattress fabric. Repeat the same process on the other side of the mattress. Set the fabric strands aside to reuse or donate.

Step 2: Remove the Mattress Sides

Once the binding cords are removed, you can pull the sides off of the mattress.

Step 3: Pull the Top Layer of Fabric Off the Mattress

When you pull back the fabric, you’ll reveal a layer of fluffy padding or foam. As you pull, watch out for staples binding the outside fabric. Snip the staples away until the top layer is completely free.

PRO TIP: To make breaking down the mattress easier with some mattresses, remove buttons or tabs on both sides of the quilting all at once with a seam ripper.

Step 4: Gather the Fabric and Interior Padding

This is where the gloves come in handy. Use your hands to sweep the fluffy insides into a trash bag or cardboard box. This stuffing is typically made up of cotton and foam, which can usually be recycled at a facility, reused or composted.

Step 5: Remove the Bottom Fiber Layer

Pull away the thin layer of fabric at the bottom. Your mattress might also have an added layer of foam cushioning for extra support. Once removed, you can break this layer down to recycle or compost.

Step 6: Cut and Recycle the Metal Springs

After you clear away the fluff and fabric, you’ll reveal the interior springs. You can cut this layer into smaller pieces with a bolt or wire cutter to take to your local metal recycling center or scrap yard. Or if you’re feeling crafty, you can upcycle the innersprings to make wine racks, pot holders and more.

How to Take Apart a Box Spring in 4 Steps

Now that you’ve tackled the mattress, it’s time to start cutting the box spring. Grab a saw and get ready to break it down.

Step 1: Remove Reinforced Corners and the Dust Cover

Most box springs have plastic pieces stapled onto the corners for added protection. Use a screwdriver to remove these pieces and set aside for recycling. Also, if your mattress has a dust cover, cut and tear it away to reveal the wood frame underneath.

Step 2: Pull Staples Binding Fabric

Use pliers to remove the staples holding the wood frame to the fabric around the bottom edges. Pull the fabric away from the wood frame with your utility knife.

Step 3: Remove the Fluffy Lining and Fabric

Gather the cotton and foam lining and pile it into a box to be recycled or composted. Peel away the fabric lining the edges of the box spring until the wood frame is completely exposed.

Step 4: Disassemble the Wood Frame

Use a hand saw or handheld buzz saw to break down the wood frame into smaller pieces. Ensure you are using work gloves and glasses for this process, if you haven’t been. You can reuse these wood pieces for small garden projects or throw them in the compost pile, if you happen to have one.

PRO TIP: Some box springs have metal parts in addition to the wood frame. Like the bedsprings, you’ll need to cut this chunk of metal into smaller pieces before you take it to a recycling center.

Recycle Your Leftover Materials

And voila! With a little bit of effort, you saved your old mattress and box spring from the landfill!

This process can take an hour or two of time and there are plenty of disposal options depending on your location. If your mattress needs to be tossed or you need more information, learn how to dispose of your mattress in different ways with our comprehensive mattress disposal guide.
