What Are Amazon Flex Blocks? 4 Things To Understand

Our website is supported by our users. We sometimes earn affiliate links when you click through the affiliate links on our website

Using Amazon Flex, you can work your own schedule without a boss and earn money delivering packages to Amazon customers.

It’s a great alternative to Uber or Lyft rideshare gigs when you want to put your vehicle into use for income without dealing with passengers.

If it is available where you live and you sign up to do delivery for Amazon, the next question you’ll likely ask is about Amazon Flex blocks.

Taking the time to fully understand how the Amazon block scheduling process works will ensure that you get the number of hours you need to make the delivery gig worth it for your income needs.

In this article, you’ll learn everything you need to know, such as how long Amazon Flex blocks last, how many orders exist in a block, how much Amazon Flex blocks pay, and when they become available.

What Is a Block With Amazon Flex?

Blocks are a predesignated period when you will deliver orders via Amazon Flex.

Since you may only work the number of hours assigned to each block, it’s essential to understand your options and responsibilities when it comes to scheduling.

How Long Is an Amazon Flex Block?

Different types of Flex blocks exist.

One type is when you deliver Amazon Fresh orders.

You’ll pick up household and grocery items from your local Amazon delivery station and typically work a three- to six-hour block shift.

Instant Amazon Fresh delivery runs become available as well.

These blocks are only available in certain areas and typically last 20 to 45 minutes.

Sometimes, you can turn these into a 2-hour block as a grocery delivery driver.

You can also pick up regular Amazon package deliveries at the Amazon warehouse or delivery station.

Similar to standard Amazon Fresh blocks, these package blocks usually last three to six hours.

Blocks for store orders will usually keep you busy for two to four hours.

When delivering packages, you’ll deliver for Amazon Logistics or Amazon Prime Now.

Amazon Logistics is the service for 2-day package deliveries.

Amazon Prime Now packages are those that need to get to customers within two hours.

How Many Orders Are in an Amazon Flex Block?

Amazon divides its blocks into orders.

You’ll need to complete each order in its entirety before you can move on to the next.

You’ll find that each block differs regarding how many packages you need to deliver.

It depends on your area, time of day, and the route.

However, you can expect to deliver somewhere between 35 to 80 orders during an average three-hour Flex block.

Keep in mind that various factors come into play when choosing routes.

You might drive a lot of miles when delivering to residential areas.

The good part is that parking isn’t ever a problem in those neighborhoods.

Delivering in a busy city means you won’t need to drive as many miles.

Parking becomes an issue on those busy streets, however.

How Much Do Amazon Flex Blocks Pay?

The amount of money you make delivering Amazon Flex packages depends on several factors.

These include the package size, delivery location, time of day, and driving distance.

You can expect to earn $18-$25 per hour working as an Amazon Flex driver.

Peak hours pay more than off-peak hours.

Signing up for blocks that offer Prime Now and Amazon Fresh deliveries usually pays more than delivering packages with the regular Amazon service.

On average, you’ll see ranges that look like this on your Amazon Flex app.

$54 to $72 per three-hour block

$36 to $50 per two-hour block

Tips affect how much you’ll earn during each Amazon block.

Some deliveries allow customers to leave you a tip.

100% of any tips left by customers go directly to you and increase your block pay.

Why Do Some Amazon Flex Blocks Pay More Than Others?

You might wonder why some Amazon Flex blocks pay more than others.

When Amazon calculates the Amazon Flex block pay rates, various factors come into play.

How far you’ll need to travel to complete an order

The minimum amount contributed by Amazon

The number of orders in a block

There’s also another factor at play here.

Blocks with more orders tend to pay less than blocks with fewer orders.

It happens because Amazon wants to ensure that its drivers get compensated fairly for the number of hours they work.

The amount that Amazon contributes to each block changes based on your location.

If you live in a larger metropolitan area, then you can expect to earn a higher average hourly rate than someone living in a smaller city.

Amazon contributes more to block pay during times when customer demand goes up.

When Are Amazon Flex Blocks Released?

Blocks go out every day and become available on a first-come, first-serve basis. It’s your responsibility to set up your schedule.

Setting your own work time is one of the prime reasons you’re doing this side hustle.

Make the most of it by staying on top of it.

Go to the Amazon Flex home screen to look at the blocks opening up throughout each day.

You can click to schedule any offer that looks good to you.

You’ll see that block show up on your calendar inside the app.

Amazon provides filtering options so you can set things up in a way that matches your personal needs.

Filter by stations and times of the day so you only see blocks that you’ll most likely see as advantageous.

If you need to remove any filters previously set up, simply tap on the button that says “all offers.”

You’ll know when you’ve successfully claimed a block because Amazon pops up a confirmation message for you.

Go into the calendar section to see all upcoming blocks on your schedule.

You’ll see orange dots that help you quickly scan your work time slots.

What Time Do Amazon Flex Blocks Become Available?

Blocks become available at all hours of the day as new customer orders stream into Amazon’s system.

Stay on top of opportunities by looking at the app often.

If you find yourself getting frustrated when you miss blocks, you should consider a block grabber.

Third-party block grabbers allow you to scan Amazon’s block scheduling system.

After downloading a block grabber on your phone, you can start automatically picking up blocks you would have otherwise missed.

The block grabbers let you set parameters, so they know which types of blocks you’re looking for.

When the grabber sees one in your area, it will add it to your Amazon Flex block schedule for you.

An important distinction to consider is that Amazon Flex isn’t designed to fulfill a full-time schedule for each Flex worker.

It’s meant to provide you with a part-time income source.

You’ll find the experience more enjoyable if you use it to supplement other income sources.

If you’re expecting to make a full-time income as an independent contractor delivery driver, then you’ll most likely wind up disappointed.

Editor’s Note: It’s worth noting that Amazon Flex bots are against Amazon’s TOS. Use them at your own risk.

Is It Bad to Decline Blocks on Amazon Flex?

You can decline blocks and even cancel blocks previously scheduled inside the Amazon Flex app as an Amazon Flex driver.

Don’t make a consistent habit of it, however.

The worst thing you can do is completely miss one of your blocks.

That can cause you to become deactivated from the Amazon Flex app.

If you need to cancel a scheduled block, go into the app as soon as possible.

Find your calendar section and click on the option to forfeit the block.

If you forfeit a block at least 45 minutes before its start, Amazon won’t penalize you for it.

Of course, that’s only if it happens once in a while.

You’ll get in trouble if you make a habit of declining available blocks or canceling them after you’ve placed them on your schedule.

There’s an incentive to remain consistent with your gig as an Amazon delivery driver.

It’s called Preferred Scheduling.

Amazon Flex lets you qualify for Rewards levels.

You can gain access to the preferred scheduling option after getting to its Level 2 inside the rewards system.

Once you hit Level 2, you’ll start seeing more advantageous reserved offers inside the scheduling area of the Amazon app.

Amazon gives you an increased amount of time to accept offers as you rise inside the rewards level system.

Don’t forget to participate in the Amazon Flex Rewards program, too.

You earn points the more you drive, and you can redeem those points as cashback on the Amazon Flex debit card.

These points also impact your preferred scheduling options.

Wrapping Up

If you haven’t already, go into the Google Play Store or Apple Store to download the Amazon Flex app.

Enter the app to apply.

Next, schedule a few Amazon Flex reserved blocks and start earning money as the next Flex driver.

How I Get Whole Foods Blocks

Whole Foods blocks along with Prime Now are among the most coveted blocks to get. They’re easier than logistics and the pay is better thanks to tips. Many drivers struggle to get these blocks and some have given up on it completely.

I was one of those drivers. I had given up on the competitive blocks because all of the mindless tapping becomes unbearable. It’s just not worth my time to tap all day for a little money when I can easily go and do logistics. After awhile delivering boxes takes it’s toll on a person, so I decided to roll up my sleeves and figure out how to capture those elusive Whole Foods pokemo.. I mean.. blocks.

My method isn’t really a secret. It’s actually quite easy. This post is for those who have given up hope, I’m here to tell you that it can be done!

How To

Full disclosure, this method involves using the Flex Utility app. If you’re not comfortable with that then you’ll have to find another way. I’m not about to stare at the phone screen for hours on end. Thankfully with Flex Utility I don’t have to. Since we’ll only be using two filters, this should work with Flex Utility free and Premium.

The Strategy

Get up as early as possible. For me if I really want the work it’s 5 AM. You may be thinking “Woah! that’s too early!”, exactly. Many other drivers will be thinking the same thing. This gives you a competitive edge. Get that coffee ready, get dressed and ready to work, then you can lay in bed half asleep and start tapping.

In Flex Utility set your station filters to the Whole Foods blocks you want. Set the hours filter to 2. That’s right, no 1 or 1.5 hour blocks. We only want the 2 hours, those pay the best. By narrowing down the blocks like this using Flex Utility filters you will have another competitive edge.

Think about it, while other drivers are attempting to accept any and every Whole Foods block that pops up, you’ll be solely focused on the 2hr blocks. No wasted time and missed opportunities going for those less paying, hardly worth it 1 hours.

Do Not Quit!

This is the key. Once you miss a block you may think it’s time to stop for awhile, NO! This is the prime time to keep tapping. If you miss a block that means someone else got it, and it’s very possible that the very same block will be forfeited. Once you miss a block start tapping even faster!

Take Note

Keep track of when desired blocks tend to drop. With Flex Utility the Block Log feature will help you immensely with this. Knowing when the blocks drop gives you a competitive edge and it’ll reduce mindless tapping time.

Whole Foods blocks tend to be very predictable, they drop at certain intervals throughout the day. Take note of this so you know when it’s time to tap like a crazy person and catch those blocks!

Simple

It doesn’t have to be difficult and frustrating to get the blocks you want, but it may take some time. The key is to develop a strategy and refine it. Give yourself every competitive edge you can think of.

In this strategy we give ourselves an edge by getting up earlier to start tapping than most people would, we narrow down our preferred block with Flex Utility filters, we keep track of when the blocks drop, and we tap even more rapidly when blocks are missed.

This strategy works consistently for me. I hope it may help some other drivers out there. Remember to continuously develop and refine your strategy. Don’t be a mindless tapper, be a dedicated and patient block slayer!

Appreciate it. Flex on and be safe.

How to get more Amazon Flex delivery blocks assigned

Help! Amazon Flex shows no delivery blocks available!

You’ve registered, completed the background check, installed the Amazon Flex app, set up your available times in the calendar, and you are ready to begin deliveries! But then, you get assigned very few blocks, or even no delivery blocks, for sometimes days, or even weeks. What’s happening?

Unfortunately, the reality is that there are many drivers competing for limited spots, so it can be difficult to be assigned available delivery blocks in advance.

Keep reading and we will show you how to resolve your problem of having no delivery blocks assigned!

How to search for and get same-day delivery block availability in Amazon Flex

It is very rare that you will automatically get blocks assigned to you in advance, even after you let the app know your availability in the calendar. Luckily, there is another way to search for and get same-day delivery blocks assigned.

These delivery blocks are released or “dropped” by the warehouse in real time, depending on their demand for Flex drivers at that particular time. What this means is that if someone forfeits their preassigned delivery block, or if the warehouse suddenly anticipates higher package volume, a delivery block can suddenly become available.

The key to getting these delivery blocks is to remember that they are first come first serve, and you must act fast!

First, choose the OFFERS menu item in the Amazon Flex app. When you check for offers here, however, you will most likely see the following screen with the text “No offers available. Check back soon.”

Now, you will need to swipe down on the screen to refresh, and do so constantly. This is no exaggeration – availability can be updated at any second, and in order to be awarded the delivery block, you must literally be the first driver to see the available delivery block and accept it.

If you are lucky, you will eventually see availability – sometimes multiple delivery blocks get released simultaneously. But again, you must act quickly – during popular times, offers are alive for only several seconds.

When you see an available block, quickly tap the block you would like to accept, and click on the orange ACCEPT button. Until you hit accept, the delivery block is NOT yours. You must do this all quickly, and you will risk getting the delivery block taken by another driver if you are not the first to complete the entire acceptance process!

Although it’s important to be quick, it’s also important to check that the delivery block is one that you are actually able to commit to and be on time for, and also WANT to take. For example, there are some delivery blocks that you might want to pass on, even if it is available.

To see the latest delivery block availability, you must refresh constantly!

Amazon Flex drivers will commonly complain that they do not see any delivery blocks availability despite “checking and refreshing every 20 minutes, all day!” Unfortunately, this approach is bound to fail because of the way the delivery blocks are released and taken.

Essentially, because the delivery blocks are first-come-first-serve, and release times are completely unpredictable, you must be one of the first to know about the availability AND the first to accept the delivery block!

For example, even if the driver above diligently checked their app every 20 minutes for 10 hours, they really only checked for availability 3 times an hour, or 30 times. The real way to increase your chances is to constantly refresh during target times.

If you can refresh once per 2 seconds, a focused, 10-minute refresh session would yield 300 times of refresh times. Your chances of being the first to know about the availability and the first to accept the delivery block are 10x!

There are some unapproved hacks and tricks for refreshing your availability screen automatically and getting more blocks assigned. We do not recommend that you try these because you may risk getting your account shut down. However, keep in mind that some drivers are utilizing these methods, and you will inevitably be competing against these drivers.

Be sure to swipe all the way down

When swiping to refresh, one common mistake is not swiping far enough to actually activate the refresh function. This could leave you spending hours refreshing but never seeing a single delivery block available!

As you swipe down, you should see a circular dial turn clockwise from the 12 o’clock position. Be sure to swipe far down enough so that the dial makes a complete, 360 degree turn.

One way to be certain that the delivery block availability information is being refreshed is to check the top of your screen and see if another circular dial spins. This means that the phone is actually connecting to the internet and transferring data.

If the phone is transferring data, then you can be assured that the Amazon Flex app is actually fetching the latest data (i.e. delivery block availability). The dial is usually located to the left of the clock.

What is the best time to search for and get same-day delivery block availability?

Continuously swiping to refresh the offers page can become exhausting after awhile, and is impractical for most of us. Instead, it usually makes sense to target specific timeframes for when you would like to accept a delivery block. The best time to target is usually from 2 hours before you would like to start your delivery block.

Why 2 hours? First, when the preassigned delivery blocks are released, the warehouses typically can only make general predictions about delivery volumes for those timeframes. More often than not, actual delivery volumes will be different from what they expected, and the warehouse will release same-day delivery block assignments as needed to cover the workload.

This typically only happens as the actual delivery time approaches (usually starting at two hours prior) as this is when they have a better sense of what the actual delivery volumes will be as the Prime Now orders begin rolling in.

Secondly, even if Amazon’s prediction for delivery needs is spot on, drivers can forfeit a block up to 45 minutes prior to their start time without penalty. So, when drivers who were assigned a block prior forfeit their spot, this delivery block becomes available for another driver to accept. Due to the 45 minute rule, there is often an increased chance of availability at just about 45 minutes before a delivery block.

Preassigned delivery block timeframes start at even hours, on the hour (e.g. 10 AM, – 2 PM, 4 PM – 6 PM), so you should plan your offer search accordingly. Do keep in mind that warehouses will release delivery blocks that start at off-times, for example, 3:30 PM – 5:30 PM – these situations are most likely in response to delivery volume spikes or incomplete deliveries by other drivers.

Other factors to consider when searching for delivery blocks

Weather, time of day, and other local events can also work in your favor in terms of availability. When it starts raining, for example, more drivers will forfeit their blocks, and customers who may have otherwise decided to go on their own to the supermarket may choose to order from Amazon instead, increasing the demand for drivers.

If you don’t mind braving the rain or missing your favorite sports team’s big game, you will definitely have an easier time getting more delivery blocks by being aware of some of these timing-based nuances. In some cases, Amazon will increase the pay rates for when they need more drivers on the road.

Search and accept delivery blocks quickly, but carefully

Although speed is the name of the game, make sure that the delivery blocks you accept are those you can actually commit to. Specifically, make sure that you can make it to the warehouse in time, and that you will not have any schedule conflicts during the entirety of the delivery block. Forfeit rules apply in the same way, so there is no turning back on any delivery blocks you commit to that start within 45 minutes!
