How can I lure a lizard out from under the stove?

Hi all,

I have had a lizard hiding under my stove since yesterday. I was afraid I’d cook him with the oven last night. I am squeemish and am afraid he’ll surprise me when I’m not expecting it and I’ll burn myself or something.

I googled how to get a lizard out of the house and found a somewhat disturbing answer online. Maybe it’s just me, but is this a little over the top? Read on:

Greetings,

As a long time Wildlife Rescue Agent I can tell you that the best and easiest way to capture and get rid of lizards as you describe is to use ‘glue boards’. Get a couple of them at W-Mart or some other hardware store and place them where you have seen the lizard…or in an area it will go to that is warm like under the stove or fridge. When you catch a lizard on it, just throw it away. Glue boards work for snakes and mice too.

Ok, it’s me again. Can anyone offer a more humane solution?

-Susan

To chase lizards out of your house, start by closing any doors that lead to other rooms so the lizards don’t escape inside. Also, stuff towels under the doors since lizards can fit through the gaps. Then, gently spray the lizards with cold water until they make their way to the nearest exit. You can also use a rolled-up newspaper to nudge them in the right direction. If you’re with a friend, have them block any nearby hiding places while you try to get the lizards out. For tips on keeping lizards out of your house, scroll down!

If you have a lizard in your house and you need to catch it, close the windows and doors in the room where you last saw the lizard, and keep other pets out of the area. Use a flashlight to check dark, enclosed spaces, like under couches, chairs, or the bed. If you can’t find it, turn off all the lights in the room and wait for about 30 minutes, then check again. Once you do find the lizard, approach it very slowly, then place a box or container face-down over the lizard. Slide a piece of cardboard or paper under the box, then carefully pick it up and move the lizard. For tips on how to safely release a wild lizard, read on!
