Yes, it’s expensive to climb the tallest of them all. A large piece of the cost is the permit fee: US 10.000 from the South side (normal route).

Add to that the costs for sherpas, gear, transportations, oxygen and such.

A low budget expedition will still require a good US 25.000 of you.

Some climbers save up and pay the lot by themselves. Most climbers try to find sponsorship for parts of- (or better yet) the total cost.

The first in the world to…

To climb the mountain is sometimes nothing compared to what climbers are facing in order to find financing for their dream. If you are a first of some kind, it will be easier since your sponsors can expect media.

That’s why we so often witness record attempts of all kinds on Everest. Spanning over everything from being the first from your country to summit, to climbing the mountain blindfolded and backwards – or whatever it takes to get the money (and/or fame).

Selling film/photos

Another way is to make a film for a production company.

The trouble is that film-making requires skill, quite large costs are involved and it takes tremendous effort to roll a camera while climbing.

In addition, climbing films – much like other documentaries – doesn’t sell easily. Better then is to get a contract with a broadcast network before the climb. They can cover the climb while it’s ongoing and produce a film after the expedition. This is of value to money sponsors in terms of airtime.

Image building

Even better is to build a certain image for a company, brand or line of products. The adventure and dangers of alpine climbing are fascinating and attractive.

Everest really changed peoples outlook on us (much to our own surprise actually) and could do just the same for products and/or “sleeping” company brands.

Join a corporate family

Yet another way – and our favorite – is to “join a company” and make your climb a part of its happenings (fairs, promotions, sales pushes and the like). To attend an expedition, even if arm-chair only, can really boost the performance of the employees in the duration of the adventure. It brakes the routine bore, the staff gets into the fight and perform better themselves in the going.

A wild adventure with the company’s name attached to it brings the staff closer together, promoting a feeling of pushing a joint aim. This feeling is otherwise hard to create, since it requires stepping outside the usual work environment and face something completely different.

Thus, the expedition helps the staff to view their usual problems with new approaches. Also, the workers realize that they’re not so bad of after all ‘ compared to that sucker in the pitch-black tent with his beard frozen to his teeth – YOU are doing much worse!

Large companies spend a whole deal of funds on staff motivations. Your expedition won’t even cut a major part of that budget.

The approach

You need to prepare your case, pick up the phone and call everyone. Don’t get discouraged by a hundred No’s and don’t give up until you find a company that’s in the market for you. Focus on what you could do for them, check their homepages, and talk to their people about upcoming happenings. Figure out a way that your expedition could be valuable to them in return for financing.

Combine one, two or all of the above stated sponsor give backs (media/film/image/happenings).

There are not so many of us doing these things out there (even if you are likely to get the impression in your initial approaches) – so you DO have value! Just keep changing your strategies – never the goal – and don’t give up. This is the same approach that you will need later for your climb anyway, so start to get used to it!

Giving back

The last and most important part is to give back to your sponsors. Underpromise and overdeliver. Too many failed expeditions also fail their sponsors.

Return gear for lend fast and neat, prepare some speeches, take nice sponsor pictures. It is not necessarily a fact that your sponsor will consider the expedition a failure just because you didn’t make the summit . And on the other end – making the summit doesn’t allow sponsor negligence.

Be loyal, don’t double play with competing brands, build a good and lasting reputation. Being a good guy pays in the long run – just as in marriage!

If everything fails…

Finally, should you fail to get the funds (and that happens to the best, so don’t eat yourself) you could shoot some sponsor pictures anyway. Sell them after the expedition to return some of your own investments, savings and/or loans.

The sponsor will experience a serious emotional impact upon viewing the company’s logos and products on Everest summit. If you couldn’t sell them the dream, you might very well be able to sell them the fact!

How to Become a Sponsored Climber or get an Expedition Sponsorship

Becoming a sponsored climber is super tough to pull off and each brand has different nuances of what they’re looking for. One universal truth is that each brand is pitched constantly so they rarely say yes. Below are 7 tips to stand out from the majority of pitches…

Research the brand and their interests

Look at their website to find their values (to see how you align)

Look at their Instagram to see what type of content they post (to see how you could fit in)

Look at their blog to see if they feature guest posting (to see if this is a possible angle)

Look at their sponsored athletes and find themes or holes (if they only sponsor climbers who are x, show them how you have x characteristics. If they sponsor a variety of folks but you don’t see y represented, but you have y, let them know that).

Bottom line: Figure out what the brand needs / wants / is missing

Build rapport

Write helpful comments to their Instagram/Twitter/Blog posts to possibly gain attention Don’t write throwaway comments like “Hot!” or “Nice!”. Write thoughtful, truthful comments. Something like, “I’ve bean using [this piece of gear] for awhile now and I love [these features] because [reasons]. The [x feature] is totally unique to the industry and makes [the product] stand out.”

Share and tag them on your media profiles

Try to attend events where the brand is Webinars count – and ask helpful/thoughtful questions or comment helpful/thoughtful answers

Showcase your value to the brand (don’t just ask for gear/money as the primary part of your message) Let them know what assets this sponsorship will gain them? Pictures, videos, reviews? Where will those assets go? Your channel, their channel? Mention if you have a large or niche social following, youtube channel, or a blog with an avid readership (even if the # of readers is small) and tell them how you’ll use this to showcase their brand

Do you have connections with other brands or people they want to be connected with? If so, say how your involvement would make this connection.

Avoid sounding whiney or needy. Also, sad stories or shaming comments are not a good start to opening a conversation / relationship.

If you have a portfolio, sample writing, etc link to relevant resources

Keep it concise

You’re cluttering their inbox and stealing their time and attention; show that you value their time by keeping to the point (avoid long / rambling stories)

Be specific about what would be helpful, like name specific pieces of gear & how you’d use them or speak to funding a specific part of the project — don’t just say “any donation would be helpful!” because that means more work for the other person to figure out what would actually work well and be beneficial to both partners.

Start small

Don’t ask a brand to fund an expedition if you’ve never worked with them before

Know that many companies don’t give out cash resources, even to their sponsored athletes

Think about multiple options of how somebody can partner with you – again, be concise and specific. Possibly, have one bigger ask that is incredibly compelling (in terms of value added) and/or have a smaller ask if that isn’t in their range.

Alternatively, try asking to review a piece of gear first (even better: review something from that brand that you already own and send them the final review or tag them as an act of good will)

Build trust

Brands like partners they can trust. Show them you’re trustworthy by answering emails quickly, following up on anything you spoke about, and delivering ahead of the deadline.

Share your ideas openly (it’s less helpful to write: “I have a ton of ideas but will tell you later” or “I have a ton of ideas but can’t share them until we have a contract”)

Customize your pitch (don’t use the same pitch for multiple companies)

Sooo many people who are looking to be sponsored send the same message to all companies and it is immediately obvious. If you’re not taking the time to personalize the letter, why would a company want to give you their time / gear / money? For example, we commonly get requests asking us to donate our product, but we don’t have a product. Clearly, those requests are from people that don’t know or care about our brand.

It will take more time to create individual letters, but otherwise, I’d be willing to bet there is a less than a 1% chance that a form letter will get you any further attention

Take into account the size of the company. We receive pitches that seem the exact same as the ones written to The North Face or Patagonia yet we have less than 1% of their revenue. It would be impossible for me to accommodate those requests. Ensure your pitch is relevant.

If you can, avoid sending your letter through the contact form as the people reading those forms will be unlikely to forward your note on. To avoid the contact form, you could use LinkedIn to try and find more appropriate people to email.

COST OF CLIMBING EVEREST

Whenever I discuss the logistics and time requirements for a climbing Everest expedition to Everest, the one thing that stuns people who don’t follow the mountaineering scene is just how much it costs. It is not uncommon for even experienced mountaineers to get a bit of “sticker shock” when pricing an Everest climb, particularly as the costs only continue to go up each year.

Thankfully, our friend Alan Arnette always does a great job of keeping tabs of those price increases and makes an annual blog post breaking down just where all of that money goes. A few days back, Alan posted the numbers for the spring 2020 season ahead, once again answering the age-old question of just “how much does it cost to climb Everest?“

How much does it cost to climb Mount Everest?

As has been the case for the past few years, the average cost of an Everest expedition is going up once again in 2020. Alan says that climbers will pay around $30,000 on the low end, and can pay as much as $160,000 on the high end. The average person will pay roughly $45,000 this season, which edges up slightly compared to last year.

Part of the surge in pricing comes from the fact that China has recently raised the price of the permit to climb the mountain from the North Side, going from $9950 to a whopping $15,800. Nepal is expected to follow suit by raising the price of its permits too, although as of this writing that hasn’t happened yet.

Additionally, there is some support within Nepal to raise the cost of an expedition in general. As more and more Nepali guide companies form, there is a vested interest by the locals to ensure that they are being paid fairly. Because of this, officials are mulling over the idea of requiring expeditions to have a minimum price of $35,000 as well, instituting a price floor.

That isn’t likely to have an impact on the cost of an expedition this season but could come into play in the future.

What’s the Breakdown of all the Costs?

Of particular interest in Alan’s post, each year is the breakdown of the costs, explaining exactly where all of the money goes. For instance, he estimated about $500-$10,125 of the price is for travel alone.

This expense is highly dependent on where you live and how much you spend on airfare just getting to and from Nepal. If you fly first class, your ticket price will go up significantly, but if you’re willing to sit in the back in coach, you can save a lot of money.

An additional $11,000-$29,500 goes into permits and insurance prices, which is also a large part of the cost of an expedition. That is a pretty broad range as well, with the specific insurance provider having an impact, as well as which side of the mountain you’re climbing on.

Supplies and gear will set you back anywhere from $800-$29,450, with this expense coming down to what equipment you already own and what items you’ll need to purchase. Unless you’re already a high-altitude climber, you probably don’t own a down suit for instance.

Obviously these price ranges are extremely wide, but Arnette goes into far more detail to help readers understand how he got to those numbers and exactly why there is such a big range.

His breakdown is much more detailed and intricate than what I’m providing here, with plenty of good advice and insight into what you do and don’t need for an expedition to the Himalayas. That wisdom has been gained over the years of his own climbing expeditions in a wide variety of locations across the globe, including successful summits on both Everest and K2.

True to his usual level of meticulous detail, Alan also takes a look back at the previous year to examine trends and variables, while later wrapping things up with a detailed spreadsheet that really breaks everything down into a variety of categories.

The Impact on Cost of Overcrowding

That includes an examination of how events in 2019 are impacting the climbing season for 2020, Arnette reminds us that it was a volatile year on the mountain, with massive overcrowding on the South Side, long lines near the summit, and a number of deaths that probably could have been avoided.

All of that hangs over the 2020 season with a dark shadow. A similar outcome for next spring could potentially be disastrous.
