An epoxy or super glue will work well for most glass to metal joints. A super glue is easy to use and great for small household objects. An epoxy will give you a stronger joint and provides more time to position your pieces precisely. If it doesn’t matter if the glue shows, we recommend J-B Weld.

Best Way To Remove Welding Spatter From Glass

If you’re able to be proactive and protect your glass, that is really the best solution. We recommend taking that approach if it is at all feasible. Some welders would tell you that the damage of grind sparks is irreparable. It almost has a buckshot-like effect and can sporadically cover the glass.

In order to remove grinding sparks from glass, it is easiest to do with a brand new razor. You can keep fresh razors on hand to have them for this purpose or just get them when you need them. Also, we are primarily referring to a razor blade in this capacity.

Take the razor blade and use a backward and then forward motion, holding the blade at a 45-degree angle, to dislodge the metal particles that are fixed into the glass surface. You can only use one side of the razor blade. If you turn it over and try to use it, you will find that the blade is damaged and it will do more harm than good to the glass that you are trying to repair.

This will help remove the metal specks from the grinding sparks. You may find that your glass surface will need some additional care for severe damage.

An alternative approach to this method would be to work with a professional glass shop. They can polish out the metal specks but this tends to distort the glass as the thickness is altered in some places.

Types of damage to glass

Probably the most annoying of all damage to glass is Weld or Grind Spatter. Not only because it takes twice as long to repair as any other form of scratch or mineral damage, but because there is no reason for it to happen in the first place. If contractors were grinding or welding close to a wooden floor, they would take measures to protect it, so why not glass.

When using a grinder on metal, sparks fly off the metal with considerable force. These sparks contain tiny particles of metal that have been removed from the object being worked on. It is very hot (that’s why it is red and yellow in colour) and hits the glass a speed. Because of the heat and force, the metal particles can embed themselves into the glass, sometimes upto 0.7 / 0.8 mm deep. In glass terms, that is very deep.

Weld Spatter is a little different, although the effect is pretty much the same. The weld slag (gas or mig) is much hotter than grind spatter and although it does not hit the glass with the same force as grind spatter, it burns itself into the glass, again to about the same depth as grind spatter.

Grind spatter is by far the more common of the two. Due to the time it takes to remove from glass, repairing either weld or grind spatter really only becomes cost effective for for large externally glazed or bespoke units.

Removing Steel Filings from Glass Frit

When you begin making your own frit, you’ll notice that there is a largish quantity of steel filings in the end product. Particularly as you filter down, the filings will end up in same container as the smallest particles, usually powder.

I find it fairly annoying to pull the filings off of the magnet, and they tend to get everywhere. This quick trick contains the filings, keeps your hands clean and work surface uncontaminated.

You will need the glass powder or frit, a rare earth magnet, a spoon and a ziploc bag. It doesn’t matter too much what size of bag, a long as it’s fairly sturdy.

Rare earth magnets are very, very strong, so they pull filings out of powder faster than regular magnets. Mine came from a dismantled disc drive, but you can buy them at any hardware store.

Start by turning the ziploc bag inside out. Then, stick the magnet on the spoon (I buy spoons at the thrift store for studio use).

Slip the spoon and magnet into the inside out ziploc bag.

Stir the spoon-in-a-bag through the powder.

You’ll see that the rare earth magnet attracts filings very quickly.

Now, holding the handle of the spoon carefully pull the ziploc bag down and turn it inside out, containing all of the filings, and leaving your spoon and magnet clean.

Now, the ziploc bag can be sealed and disposed of without spreading filings all over your studio.

If your powder needs more stirring, you can dispose of frit by holding the spoon over the trash can and pulling the bag away from the magnet, all of the frit will fall into the trash and you can stir more powder.
