Hanging a Cowhide Skin on a Wall

Cowhide skins have moved much beyond their initial use as carpets and rugs and are increasingly become popular as a decorative ornamental wall hanging. Once a cowhide skin is displayed in their full glory on a wall they become a piece of cowhide wall art and can help to make a room cosier and turn it into your very own cave! You will need to have a very large wall and some patience to hang a cowhide on to you wall (or even ceiling), but it should only take a few simple steps

There are several ways to display your cowhide on the wall. If the wall is soft such as plasterboard or fibreboard then the easiest ands simplest way to hang your cowhide would be to use thin small headed nails or staples – preferably dispensed using a powered staple gun. You will need a lot of nails because you should use unobtrusive thin nails and cowhide skins can be very heavy.

Lay the cowhide skin on the floor right in front of the wall where it will hang. Make sure you position it so it’s centred as much as possible (if that’s your preference) and determine the topmost point right in the centre of the cowhide skin.

Start nailing it to the wall whilst holding your hand on the cowhide’s topmost centre point and gather the cowhide and climb the ladder. Nail the topmost centre point into the wall, as close to the cowhide skin border as is physically possible ensuring the ends don’t curl in but nailed far enough to ensure it hangs well. Follow this up by flattening the hide against the wall on one side, then the other, nailing the outermost points to the wall first so you eventually have a flat hide sitting proud on the wall.

Finish the process by nailing around the perimeter of the hide at roughly equidistant points to firmly secure the cowhide skin to the wall. You may have to repeat a few nails if the cowhide skin begins to buckle or bend. You will want the cowhide skin to be as flat as possible against the wall or it will not look too good.

Alternatively you can make a simple wooden frame from softwood and then attach the cowhide skin to the frame either with glue or staples and then attach the frame to the wall either by the traditional power drill and rawlpug method of alternatively it is also possible to use powerful impact adhesive. It will depend on how long you intend to showcase your particular cowhide skin in that location and the nature of your wall as to the method you use.

Cowhide skins as a wall decoration can also be most effective in an outdoors location – I have one stapled to a wooden framed patio dividing partition at the back of my house and the cowhide brindle pattern shape and texture have attracted many a complement usually followed by the complementee rubbing their hand over the soft silky and luxurious sheen of the cowhide skin,

However you use your cowhide on the wall and regardless of the way you attach your cowhide to the wall you shouldn’t be concerned with damaging your valuable cowhide skin. Properly tanned cowhide skins such as those we sell at Cowhide Rugs UK are virtually indestructible. Properly cared for, your cowhide skin rug or carpet should last a life time.

Top Tips for Hanging a Cowhide Skin to the Wall

Cowhide skins can make great bed headboards!

You can use a stronger, thicker nail for the top centre of the cowhide skin if the smaller one keeps falling out as you start to hang the cowhide skin. If you find natural coloured cowhide skins too dark or lacklustre then why not consider dyed or printed cowhide skins that resemble zebra, tiger or other animal skins.

It is possible to hang a cowhide skin on the wall by yourself but as with most things in life an extra pair of hands wouldn’t go amiss.

Hanging a cowhide skin onto the wall can be a major headache, but I’m sure you’ll think it worth it once you see the results.

How to Hang a Cowhide Without Nails

How to Hang a Cowhide Without Nails Tuesday, January 15, 2019 6:00:00 AM America/Chicago

Do you like the look of a cowhide rug displayed on your wall, but are concerned about damaging the rug? Interior design experts say that while nailing the rug is the most common method for mounting your cowhide rug to the wall, it certainly isn’t the only option.

Here is how to hang a cowhide without nails.

Hanging with a rug casing

A rug casing is a great way to protect your cowhide rug while it is hanging on a wall. A combination of a casing and rod hooks is a relatively simple way to hang your cowhide rug without nails.

Mount the rod hooks onto the wall. This might require drilling screws into the wall, but at least it will just be in one spot on the wall. Be sure to measure the length of the rod against the back of your rug. Determine the orientation of the rug, how you want it to look like on the wall. Cowhide has an irregular pattern so you want to make sure it is displayed in a sophisticated manner. Next you need to sew a casing which is basically a long, banded piece of fabric to the back of the rug. Choose a sturdy material like cotton or linen. Make sure there is still at least one or two inches of space left at each end of the rug for the edge of the rod. Create a mounting band for the rod and sew it into the casing. Check to make sure the rod has enough room to slide easily in and out but still a snug fit. Experts recommend that you paint the wood or metal rod before inserting it to make sure it won’t damage the casing or rug with acids or rust. Insert the rod into the mounting band and hang your rug on the hooks already attached to the wall.

Another option is to just use rod hooks that you sew directly onto the back of the rug. If you do this, be sure to sew only into the back of the rug so the stitch does not show on the front of the rug. With either method, you will prevent a lot of damage to your wall and to your rug.

You can also use rug hangers that clamp on the rug and then are screwed onto the wall like this.

Holy Cow-hide! A dresser make-over.

Hooray! I might actually be ahead of a trend!

There was a fabulous collection of cowhide rugs show-cased at The Stories of A to Z. I don’t know that I want a whole (very expensive!) hide. However, I am glad I hung on to a dresser re-do from a while back. I did this project for an old cabin we had several years ago, but I liked it so much that I kept it even after we sold our cabin.

I’m using it as a buffet in our dining room.

This dresser started out as a purple, aqua and white monstrosity. Someone tried their hand at sponge-painting. However, it was solid and was only $25 on craigslist.

I used a chemical paint stripper, scrapers and finally a wire brush to get the paint off. Since it was acrylic paint, it really wasn’t too bad.

Once all of the paint was off it was obvious the dresser had previously been stained a dark wood color. It looked old and rustic (perfect for a cabin), so I just rubbed a little wood polish onto it.

I scoured ebay looking for genuine cowhide. After a couple of weeks I had enough to do the drawer fronts.

Each of the drawer fronts had a raised rectangular panel. I cut the cowhide to size and then used regular old Goop/Gorilla Glue to adhere the hide to the wood. (I had been thinking that if I got tired of the cowhide, I could also do a similar treatment with burlap or some other fabric…)

I used nail-head upholstery trim on the edges. This was the fabulous trim that comes in a roll and you only need to nail in every 5th or 6th nail-head. Making sure the corners lined up well was a bit of a challenge, but otherwise it was very easy.

I like the texture it adds. I used the hole placement from the old knobs to poke a hole in the cowhide and add new ones.

This definitely falls under the “eclectic” category of home decor. I put all the things I like together… doesn’t matter the style, as long as it is pleasing to my eye. I’m sure I’m breaking all sorts of design rules, but I figure if I like it, then it works in my home.

I’ve received a lot of questions about the orange subway art/family rules piece above the dresser.
