How to Hypnotize Someone With a Pocket Watch

Back in the day, I hypnotized thousands of people. I rarely used a pocket watch – opting for more rapid and dramatic hypnotic induction techniques. But when I swung a watch, it worked a treat. To use a pocket watch to hypnotize someone start with a simple question . . .

Is your subject hypnotic?

Not everyone can be hypnotized

Some people are genetically predisposed to hypnosis, some aren’t. If you swing a pocket watch in front of someone who isn’t hypnotic, nothing will happen and, well, that’s awkward.

Metal > < Magnet Test Before you start swinging your watch, test to see if your potential subject is hypnotic. If they pass, go for it. If not, forget it. Stand directly in front of your subject. Hold your arms straight out, palm facing each other, about a foot apart. Tell the subject to do the same and then close their eyes. Put your hands down and read/memorize this script. Imagine that your right hand is a powerful magnet. And your left hand is a piece of metal. There’s a strong force flowing between them, pulling them together. Metal and magnet moving closer. The closer they get, the stronger the force. The stronger the force, the closer they get. Metal and magnet moving closer. Closer and closer. Closer. Closer and closer. [Repeat] Try using a stern and commanding “father voice” and a soft and soothing “mother voice.” (I know that sounds sexist but there it is.) Mentally note which voice works best – assuming either does. IF their hands move closer, before they touch say “when they touch, leave them there.” (You can also stop saying the word closer.) When their hands touch, tell them to open their eyes and look at their hands. Tell them to put their hands down and have a seat. [NOTE: if their hands come together in one single smooth motion, that’s following orders, not hypnosis. Bail.] If their hands don’t move after 30 seconds, give up. Tell them to keep their eyes closed (so they don’t see the failure) and put down their hands. Once they do, then tell them to open their eyes, say nope, ain’t gonna happen. Fuhgeddaboutit. Hands touched? Prepare! Practice swinging you pocket watch on a chain before you do the hypnosis. The trick is to have a slow and steady rhythm, creating an arc of around six to eight inches. Prepare you subject by telling them to get comfortable. Give them time to do so. Get out your pocket watch – slowly. Hold the watch up at your chest level. Run your free hand down the chain to steady it until it’s stock still. Why swing a pocket watch? Swinging a pocket watch is weird. Weirdness increases anxiety. That’s a good thing, not a bad thing. People have an internal “script” for hypnosis: swinging pocket watch = hypnosis. You’re exploiting their expectations. A swinging pocket watch is a “point of eye fixation.” People pay closer attention to your words when they’re staring at something. A swinging pocket watch tires out their eyes. So when you say “your eyes are getting tired” you darn tootin’ they are. Swing the pocket watch, read this script Read the following script using whatever voice worked best for the test – “father” or “mother.” Feel free to switch between them. Relax and take your time. Follow the watch with your eyes. Back and forth. Back and forth. That’s good. Just follow the watch with your eyes and listen to the sound of my voice. Breathe easy and let yourself begin to feel sleepy. Heavy. As you follow the watch, your eyes are getting heavier and heavier. Heavier and heavier. Your eyelids are heavy, like lead weights. So heavy and tired they just want to close. So you can drift off into a deep relaxing sleep. Let go of your eyes. Let them do what they want to do. Let your eyes close. Sleep now. Sleep. If that doesn’t work, say “Go on, close your eyes. No seriously. Close your eyes.” That’s following a command – not hypnosis per se – but we don’t want one of those awkward moments do we? If it works, they’re in hypnosis. The clearest indication: rapid eye movement under their eyelids. Don’t worry if you don’t see it, but if you do, good for you! And them, I hope. With great hypnosis comes great responsibility. For my sake, theirs and yours, use a pocket watch-induced trance state to improve your subject’s life. “I’m scared to be hypnotized!” “What if I don’t come out of it?” “Will you make me cluck like a chicken?”

I’ve heard it all. When I talk to the clients at my hypnotherapy practice about the therapeutic benefits of hypnotherapy, these are just some of the concerns they share.

It’s natural to be afraid or skeptical of something you don’t understand. But I believe no one should ever be afraid or uncomfortable about the process. That’s why, when clients come to me for hypnotherapy, we begin with a frank talk about what being hypnotized is, and what it isn’t.

Their preconceived notions come from the way our culture sees hypnosis, as well as the powerful potential that hypnotherapy holds as a therapeutic tool.

I joke with my clients about how they might be worried about working with a hypnotherapist who could mysteriously declare, “You are now under my power…”

Or, we might discuss what will happen to their brain while they’re in a hypnotic state, and how they’re going to be “back to normal” when it’s all over.

We’ll even talk about hypnophobia, the fear of going to sleep or being hypnotized. People with hypnophobia don’t want to lose control of their normal state of awareness.

Connecting With Different Parts of Your Brain

After my clients and I talk about their fears and misunderstandings, I fill them in on the science of hypnosis and hypnotherapy.

Hypnosis is the state of mind resulting from a trained therapist relaxing you into a trance state. Hypnotherapy lets you access your unconscious and allows it to communicate with your conscious mind.

Whether you want to break a bad habit, understand the past more clearly, or even visit a past life, you’ll need to open communication between your “normal mind” and the unconscious part of your brain. Hypnosis makes this possible.

Once you’re in the trance state, a hypnotherapist can’t (and wouldn’t want to) control your mind. Your therapist merely controls the trance state, so you can have productive insights during your session. As you’re about to see, your time with a hypnotherapist is a whole lot safer than many of the situations you meet up with in daily life.

What’s a Trance?

The trance state is actually a natural state of mind. In fact, there are many times during the course of a normal day when you enter the same kind of trance you experience in hypnotherapy. It happens when you’re very relaxed or very focused.

In both cases, the unconscious mind is still “listening,” even though the conscious mind is either intently focused or totally distracted.

When you’re in a trance, your brainwave activity is dominated by theta waves. Theta waves bring on a state of relaxation that removes any blocks you may have to your repressed memories and deep emotions

Anyone watching you while you were being hypnotized might think you’re not 100 percent aware of what’s going on around you. Yet, inside your mind, there is a whole world of activity! You’re “turned on” to the world of thought and feeling that is always listening to and recording the things that happen every moment of your life. There is so much you can learn while you’re there.

Have you ever noticed that, although you may be contorted into a twist or straining to balance on one foot, you feel perfectly at ease in yoga class?

The flow of words from your instructor, your breathing patterns, and your body motions change the way your brain behaves, relax you, and put you into a trance. If you don’t get there before, you’re sure to be completely blissed out in rest pose at the end of the session.

Your brain needs a lot of entertainment, so when it does something over and over again, it no longer pays attention to the details.This can be the case with your commute.

Your mind finds pleasure in being stimulated by sound, and lets you get lost in it. Watch out if you happen to get totally detached from what’s going on around you. When you’re about to jump into the crosswalk, it’s time to come out of your trance.

Whether you’re thinking, drawing, writing, or out on your morning run, any time you’re “in the flow,” you are in a trance. Your conscious awareness takes a break and allows you to experience the ease of being on“autopilot.

You feel like you’re at one with the task you’re performing, and you easily filter out any and all distractions. Your friends and co-workers might find it really hard to distract you when you’re in this state — because you’re “in a trance!”

It isn’t just kids playing video games who become entranced by digital interaction and entertainment. Like a TV, your smartphone flashes light and tricks your brain into a trance. Combined with your impulsive need to interact, this can grab your attention completely.

You’ve probably seen a couple sitting in a restaurant, both on their phones, texting and playing games rather than gazing into one another’s eyes. Or, you might have done this yourself. In either case, someone’s in a trance!

In many traditions, the act of worship involves the use of a repetitive prayer or mantra, chanting, or both. If you’ve experienced this, you know how you can shut out the rest of the world while you engage in these practices.

Your oneness with the words, the sounds, the intonations, take you into a trance state and connect you with a source of divine love. This is probably one of the most enchanting trance experiences of all. In almost all cases, this trance also feels very safe and precious!

Can hypnosis be used to make someone do something against his or her own will? This question has been the source of great controversy. I served as a consultant about hypnosis to Woody Allen’s film, The Curse of the Jade Scorpion, in which the character of Voltan uses hypnosis to get others to steal for him without recalling the event.

So, can hypnosis be used for mind control?

There has certainly been a lot of research on the subject. The CIA and KGB have both experimented with hypnosis to create the perfect spy or even an assassin. But while I have read many stories about these experiments, I’ve never seen any proof of their success. Much may be possible in the dark and sinister underworld of spies and madmen, but university research on the possibilities has always been limited by ethics.

Could you be hypnotized and forced to do something illegal or diabolical? The general answer is that you cannot. There is a possibility, however, that if one had unlimited resources of money, power, and time, devious plans could be designed: There really were many secret experimental programs like “MK-Ultra” that used hypnosis and drugs to push mind-control to its limits. Is it possible that your friendly neighbor could have been implanted with a program to suddenly become a killer when “triggered” by the right signal?

What has been documented is that if you found a subject whose personality was deviant to begin with and wanted to direct their minds to do something extreme like plant a bomb or commit an assassination, you may be able to guide him or her to do it—with or without hypnosis. The hypnotic trance is a state of awareness that makes a person more easily persuaded. But the art of persuasion relies on many factors. To convince a normal person to become a killer is extremely unlikely. But if you are able to use coercion—such as kidnapping and threatening the life of their child—a person could very well be able to do anything to protect their offspring. Similarly, it may be possible to convince a person that something horrific will happen unless they follow your instructions precisely. Hypnosis could be used to plant such images, feelings, and stories in an innocent person who may then give in to the pressure and commit an attack they would otherwise never consider.

You may have read in the spy novels about nefarious masterminds who use so-called “mind-control” techniques to program innocents to do their bidding like so many robots. And again, while this is unlikely, evildoers may be able to recruit the types of individual whose personality already is ready, if not eager, for violence, which could presumably include combat veterans who killed many enemy combatants in active duty. Perhaps this person also has strong philosophical leanings that following orders is correct, regardless of the consequences. If such a person volunteers for a covert project and enough time is spent applying all sorts of techniques to “reprogram” the subject, anything may be possible. Hypnosis could be used to promote a more complete mind reprogramming and solidify a specific plan with great detail—and create a hypnotized walking time-bomb.

Fortunately, there are very few people who are eager or willing to volunteer for such an experiment. There are also, however, many fanatics who do not need any additional persuasion to become assassins. We all know the madness of martyrs who become suicide bombers in the name of fanatical belief. We need hardly worry about someone using hypnosis to reprogram an individual to become a killer; there are enough individuals already eagerly seeking opportunities to inflict harm. Most of these violent people are psychotic, this is a serious mental problem and often does lead to criminal behavior.

If you are a normal person, you cannot be programmed to become a killer without your knowledge. However, there are plenty of psychotic people who can easily become violent even without any outside influence. Hypnosis can be persuasive, but does not give the hypnotist control over your mind, morality, or judgment. So do not fear hypnosis—it should continue to develop as an effective technique to promote desired change in behavior, thinking, and emotions (without shifting to mind-control). It’s a powerful tool and we should use it for beneficial purposes, not evil intentions.
