What pins to jump a relay?

The fuel pump primes when the ignition switch is in run. If you want to jump the fuel pump relay it will be pin 30 to 87.

How do I force my AC clutch to engage?

The best way to manually engage an AC compressor clutch is by connecting a jumper wire directly to the wire on the compressor. Be sure to fill the compressor with oil before doing this and check if you have enough refrigerant.

How do I force my AC compressor to start?

At the compressor’s front side, unplug the single wire connector, take a jumper wire and attach it to the wire that you just disconnected from the compressor. Connect the other end of the jumper’s wire to the positive terminal of the car battery. This will enable the compressor to start manually.

Do relays click?

The clicking noise on the fuse of a car is caused by a relay that is switched on and off quickly. This can be caused by a computer failure, ground cable resistance for the relay control side, or high power supply resistance for the relay control side.

Does a relay click when it’s bad?

If your starter relay has gone bad, the electrical signal will never make it from the battery to the starter motor. As a result, your engine won’t turn over – no matter how many times you turn the key. A faulty relay often produces an audible clicking sound when you turn your car.

How do you bypass the ignition switch to start a car?

All you have to do is connect to identify the ignition coil and the battery. Connect the positive terminal of the battery to the positive side of the ignition coil. Also, identify the starter solenoid and connect it to the positive terminal of the battery.

How do I turn my ignition switch on without the key?

In order to start it without a key, one needs to bypass the ignition lock which should only be done when you lost your key. It can only be done by connecting ignition cord to the battery cord followed by touching the starter cord to the connection.

How do you bypass a compressor relay?

You’ll need to remove the metal connecter attaching it to the relay system first and then use pliers to strip some of the wire (no more than ¼ inch) on either side. Using electrical tape, connect both ends of the wire back to the relay housing so it completely bypasses the missing relay and closes the circuit.

A paperclip as a Fuel Pump Relay bandaid?

Post by nightc1 » 02 Sep 2010, 21:02

Well, for my specific car, the relay (when plugged in) is not engaging (or staying engaged) and letting juice fully flow to the fuel pump. So I’m getting some gas but not enough to keep the car going very long (though maybe it’s the engine pulling gas through some kind of pressure and the pump isn’t running at all). With the paperclip in, the car runs nice and smooth and I can hear the pump run (if I listen for it). This means, by my own reasoning (feel free to correct me, I’m a computer scientist not a mechanic), that either…The relay is not getting the signal that the engine is running and thus isn’t engaging the circuit to let juice floworThe relay is not workingI see no option for the fuel pump to be bad since it runs perfectly with the paperclip installed. If it’s (A) then no amount of good backup relays would let me drive my car home. But a paperclip would. So I’m definitely going to keep a paperclip in the fuse box (with the extra fuses) from now on. I may even throw a few extras in the little volvo tool bag that came with the car. It seems like the wise thing to do if it doesn’t damage something to use it in place of the relay. As for the pump running when the engine is off, with my 99 V70 (Base model), I can only hear the pump run when I’m starting the car or while the car is running. It makes NO noise when the engine is switched off and the key is removed. Maybe this isn’t true for other cars in the 850/70 line… but I checked this out first. I can triple check tomorrow by putting the volt meter on the bridged pins and see if any voltage is present with the key out of the ignition as well as every position with the key in the ignition. I’ll post back my results. Either way it’s probably smart to pull the paperclip when not in use. I may even take this 1 step further and build a kill switch jumper that I can route through the drivers window.Either way (A) or (B), before I replace the relay I need to get my multimeter out and see if when the engine is on if there is any voltage on the other relay pins that would signal it to engage. Since it’s an on or off kind of deal, I gotta think that there should be some kind of voltage that’ll show up. My relay could be functioning perfectly but something else could be causing the issue. Throwing money at it blindly doesn’t mix well with my budget (though under $3 in capacitors wasn’t a huge waste). I’ll happily buy a new relay if the upgraded relay really is bad… or a speed sensor or whatever is needed to fix the issue.I just can’t wait to finally have the car home this extra long weekend. It’s kind of funny that a typicaltrick is what is needed for a temporary fix.The only thing I really wonder here is, will the pump running the entire drive home cause the engine to get flooded thus ruining plugs or burn too much fuel or something bad like excessive pressure in the fuel lines since the pump wont disengage while the car is in run or start mode. I don’t mind wasting a little fuel… but I don’t want to cause some huge pressure build up and blow a fuel line or something else horrible.

The paper clip trick

I just went though this one with my 90 4-runner. The intake sensor has two functions and separate circuits. One tells the ECU how much air is coming through the intake ( like a Mass Airflow Sensor) and the other simple on/off switch tells the ecu the engine is running by the “door” opening just a little. If the ECU doesn’t think the engine is running, it shuts off the fuel pump. (It’s a safety AND functional thang…) This keeps the fuel pump from just running when the key is on for no reason and also if the engine dies, for whatever reason, including an accident, the fuel pump shuts off.I ended up tearing mine up trying to check it, so I took it apart. (very brittle and the connector was NOT cooperative!)This is the offending part:Here is a picture I took and marked up(Trying to make a good impression on my first post here…) (Sorry it is so large, but otherwise the details are hard to read…)I forgot to put the note for the temp sensor, but that is the switch at the top and the black wires on the 3rd and 6th connectors. (counting downward)So when I found a used one (Toyota wanted $850+ WTF) I found that switch was bad also! Not knowing this I did more troubleshooting to come back to this little switch as the culprit.Try jumpering the two switch terminals at the airbox and see if the fuel pump runs. If so then that is your problem. That will also eliminate all the other relays etc. (i.e. this is where the “control” side of the circuit lives)However, now it is time to see if you can get that part fixed…

Please give details about how and why you filled the system with refrigerant and what the static pressure was before and after the procedure.

Okay, so I measured ohms on the terminals and it read 1.3 consistent. Regarding the refrigerant system, I had used an AC Pro can I had with the gauge on it. The first reading had the gauge showing 30 psi, after jumping the clutch this went down to about 5, and I had filled it up to 40psi which was blowing cold air with the clutch relay jumped with the paper clip. I had done this since I knew that the clutch doesn’t engage if the system is too low on refrigerant and I mistakenly thought that since I was able to get the AC clutch going with the paper clip, that the issue was just low pressure in the system and it would stay working after I was able to fill the pressure back up.Process:-Turned car on full AC and full blower speed, and tested the PSI with the AC Pro can it was showing 30psi-Jumped the AC clutch relay to see if the system would pull in that refrigerant and pressurize, it seemed to, and PSI dropped to 5 and held-Filled the system to 40 PSI and allowed the system to run for a few minutes, hoping that this was the solution to the issue-Tested the air in the car and it was reading 68F as opposed to the 98F I was getting before (i foolishly though Huzzah!)-turned off the car and replaced the paper clip with a new relay and started the car to see if the AC was cold and the clutch would engage now-No such luck, hot air came out and the clutch was no longer engagedI apologize for my ignorance on these things, I am learning as I go and still new to repairing vehicles. I really appreciate your guidance!Thank you,
