What Colour of braces is best?

Are clear braces a good idea?
Cons of Clear Braces
Clear braces are more prone to damage than metal braces as the materials used are less durable, so you may incur extra costs due to repairs. The arch wires used for clear braces are either clear or white and since the material is porous it is prone to staining.
What color braces make your teeth whiter?
While the bands can’t actually whiten your teeth, they can make them appear whiter. To do it, ask your orthodontist for a dark colour. Dark colours like deep blue or purple are going to contrast against the colour of your teeth beside the brackets and make them appear whiter.
Can you kiss with braces?
Wait until you feel comfortable with your braces before trying for anything adventurous, like a kiss. We recommend waiting at least two weeks before attempting any kissing. When you do kiss, take it slow. Being gentle is important, both for the safety of your braces and your partner.

How to Keep Clear Braces from Staining – Elko Dental Specialists
Clear orthodontic braces are a popular option among patients here at Elko Dental Specialists, as they provide an increased level of discretion over traditional braces. The clear material means that, besides the metal wires, these braces are almost completely invisible. Extra attention needs to be given to keeping these braces as clean as possible, however; as they are prone to staining if not maintained correctly. In an effort to help you stay as satisfied with your treatment as possible, we have compiled a list of a few tips to help you make sure both your clear appliances, as well as your teeth, as clean and pristine as possible.
Brush, Rinse and Floss Immediately After Eating
This is a recommendation your orthodontist will most likely give you regardless of which type of braces you have, but it is doubly important for patients with clear braces. Prolonged contact with food particles increases the intensity of stains, so removing as much food from your teeth as often as possible is your best option for keeping your invisible braces invisible. If at all possible, you should brush, floss, and rinse with mouthwash even after smaller snacks, not just larger meals. It helps keep your teeth themselves cleaner and healthier as well and prevent tooth decay around and behind your brackets.
Add Extra Foods to Your Do Not Eat List
Beyond the usual foods to be avoided with braces, clear braces bring an extra layer of concern when it comes to keeping them clear and undamaged. Many foods which are totally fine with normal metal brackets should be avoided as much as possible by patients with the invisible alternative. Foods and drinks with this high intensity, almost instant staining power include:
Tomatoes and tomato products like pastes, sauces, and ketchup.
Yellow mustard
Turmeric and curries
Berries and pomegranates
Beets
Food with artificial dyes like popsicles, slushies, and colored candies
Coffee
Teas
Red Wine
Dark Sodas
Soy Sauce
Balsamic Vinegar
If you just can’t resist the urge to eat or drink any of these, make doubly sure to immediately brush, floss, and rinse after eating. Also, drinking coffee, tea, dark sodas or red wine through a straw can help to reduce contact with the brackets and prevent staining.
Avoid Smoking
Beyond the known health risks associated with smoking and the already existing staining power of nicotine smoke on your teeth, smoking can just as easily stain your clear braces a sickly yellow, and can be harder to clean than any food which may cause staining, even if you immediately brush after smoking. Just say no.
Avoid Whitening Toothpaste
This is a good bet whether you are a patient with clear or traditional braces. The whitening power of the toothpaste will keep the surfaces of your teeth and brackets white, however; once removed the tooth surface which was underneath brackets will more likely than not be a different shade than the rest of the tooth, leaving you with some unsightly imprints of where your brackets once were. Leave the whitening for after your treatment is complete and your appliances removed.
Visit your Orthodontist Frequently
As you should be visiting for follow up appointments regularly anyways, this step is not so hard to follow through with, but becomes extra important for clear braces for a different reason than the usual adjustments. With clear braces, clear elastic ligatures are generally used as opposed to colored ones. These clear ligatures stain more easily than the brackets themselves, so extra care should be taken with them in the first place. Changing them out regularly, however; is the only real way to ensure they stay perfectly clear. Make sure you visit your orthodontist regularly, and schedule extra appointments if necessary when those elastics begin to show.
Do ceramic braces turn yellow?
A question we get asked almost daily by patients is can my ceramic braces turn yellow? Well, clear fixed braces can turn yellow but not in the way you may think.
It’s not the actual bracket that turns yellow. The ceramic brackets of your braces will never stain as they are resistant to discolouration. The clear elastic bands we use to attach the archwire to your brackets, however, can stain – and this can make your braces much more visible. Things that can stain these elastics include spices such as turmeric and saffron but also food colourings that you might find in foods like instant noodles.
Not to worry though. These elastics are changed at every visit and will be refreshed back to their aesthetic colouring that you would expect. If you are feeling cautious though, there are actions you can take to make sure staining doesn’t happen.
Change your diet
Clear ceramic braces stain as a result of dark, deeply coloured foods and drinks like coffee, wine, tea, and even tomato sauce. The dark pigments in these foods can leak into the material of the elastic bands, causing them to stain. The best way to prevent staining is by avoiding these foods and drinks in the first place.
Maintain good oral hygiene
In addition to monitoring your diet, making sure to brush your teeth and braces immediately after eating or drinking anything besides water will also help to keep your braces clear. If you cannot brush your teeth immediately, try rinsing your mouth out with a glass of water. The goal is to minimise the amount of time your braces spend in contact with deeply coloured, stain inducing foods.
If you are interested in ceramic braces then please do not hesitate to get in touch on 0161 884 1481.

Why Clear Braces May Not Be the Clear Choice: Jonathan Shouhed, DDS: Orthodontist
Most people want straight teeth. For many the idea of metal braces, however, is a non-starter. We are all concerned about how we look, and that is still true even when we are in the process of improving our appearance. While there is always the option of using clear aligners to straighten teeth without a mouth full of metal, for some, traditional braces are clearly the better option. So, for those concerned with appearance but for whom traditional braces is the best option, there is a solution: clear traditional braces. But is it that simple? Are clear braces just as good as metal braces? Let’s dive in.
Clear braces are usually made from some kind of ceramic or super-glass-type material. These braces are made this way to make them as strong as possible while not having a metal showing. They usually appear very esthetic and blend in nicely with your teeth. The problem with this this material, though, is that the ceramic material is not as strong as metal. So when we bite on foods or other things, over time, the ceramic may wear down and crack. These fractures or breakages mean that brackets need to be replaced. This can mean a longer emergency appointment in your orthodontic office and potentially cause an extension in your treatment time. If this happens multiple times, you can expect that your treatment plan will take longer than initially expected. Clear braces are clear the day you get them, but it is very difficult to keep them “clear”. Once the clear brackets are glued to your teeth and the wire is attached to the brackets, you are on your way home. Here’s where you need to be careful. As a ceramic material, compared to metal, clear braces have microscopic pores in them. This means that they are able to pick up colors from the foods we eat. Any food from ketchup and mustard, to purple cabbage, to wine or coffee or black tea, as well as other super foods like turmeric can impart a small amount of color to the clear brackets. Over time, these clear brackets become less and less clear and for many start to turn a shade of yellow or brown. Once the braces have changed color, it is very difficult to get them back to their original color. There are ways to prevent this: vigilant brushing after every meal with whitening toothpaste. There are many who go their entire orthodontic treatment in clear braces without any issue, but it takes a great deal of extra attention to brushing. Clear ceramic brackets are made by a process called sintering. This involves heating the ceramic into an injection mold and then baking them until they are hardened. This process creates a rough surface of the bracket (at the microscopic level). When your orthodontist places your wires into your crooked teeth, the wire slides through the bracket as teeth are straightening allowing the teeth to move without interruption. With clear brackets and their rough surfaces, your wire may not slide as smoothly which can slow down the process of straightening teeth. There are ways to overcome the problem and get to the finish line, but the solutions must be created once the problem has shown up. And of course, once the problem has shown up, a delay in your treatment time has already been created.
Clear braces are a wonderful option for many patients. And many patients love their choice to straighten their teeth with clear brackets. Clear brackets, however, are not perfect and will have their own management issues. The decision is up to you, but these bits of information should make you more aware of the risks of starting orthodontic treatment with traditional clear braces.
