How to Keep Mice Out of Lawnmowers
A shed or garage seems like the ideal place to store a lawnmower — it keeps the mower dry and out of the way when it’s not in use. That shed or garage, though, is exactly the type of place mice like to explore, forage or even build their nests. The lawnmower provides an ideal hiding place for mice, because they prefer tucking their nests away in narrow enclosures not immediately noticeable by potential predators. Preventive measures in the building or area surrounding the mower will help keep rodents away from the mower, and therefore out of harm’s way and your way.
Repelling Wire-Eating Rodents
In the nursery rhyme, “Hickory Dickory Dock,” the worst that happened was “the mouse ran up the clock,” only to be scared away when “the clock struck one.” Mice and rodents aren’t so shy when they’re climbing around on machinery.
Today, a wayward rodent can cause hundreds of dollars in damage by simply gnawing on electrical wiring. “They seem to be especially attracted to the cab,” says Ray Bosc, service manager at Notre Dame Motors, a Versatile and Massey Ferguson dealer in Notre Dame, Manitoba.
Keep ’em out and off
Located in a climate where winter comes early and mice quickly seek indoor shelter, Bosc says it’s often easier to keep mice off of tractors or vehicles than to get rid of them once they’re established. “It seems like once they get into something, they’re always in there,” he says. “They tend to leave a scent trail, which basically says, ‘Everything is fine, come on up,’ and that attracts other mice.”
Bosc says the damage isn’t restricted to wires and hoses, either. He’s seen an equal amount of mouse damage on chewed-up seat cushions or a cab headliner.
One way to remove the temptation is to clean machines prior to storage using compressed air.
The second line of defense should be some type of rodent repellent. Both LandMark Implement and Notre Dame Motors sell such a repellent called Fresh Cab. But there are other sprays and packets on the market that do the same thing.
Some collectors claim that dried orange peels, mothballs, and fabric softener sheets also work, although such home remedies remain unproven.
Formulated with various oils, including peppermint, balsam fir, cedar, eucalyptus, citrus, or menthol, commercial repellents not only fend off rodents but also leave a cab smelling fresh. To use these repellents, simply place a few packets inside the cab and in strategic locations around the machine.
Predator Scents
Other products on the market are said to contain fox and bobcat scent to repel rodents. Those may be fine for placing around tires and the engine, but it’s your call on whether to put them in the cab.
Either way, an ounce of prevention seems to be worth a pound of cure when rodents are concerned.
How To Keep Mice Away (2022 Edition)
Top 5 Ways to Keep Mice Away
Preventing mice from making their way into your home in the first place is the best way to keep it safe. By making sure you take all the right precautionary measures, you don’t have to worry about exterminators or setting mouse traps, which can be unsanitary and inhumane. Instead, work on prevention in your day-to-day life and practice caution when dealing with rodents of any kind.
Seal Off Entry Points
Mice can’t make their nest in your home if they don’t have a way to sneak in from outdoors. If you want to make sure your home is safe, take some time to look around your property and keep an eye out for any cracks or crevices in the walls or windows. Any place where mice can squeeze in should be covered or filled. With small rodents, your best bet for keeping them out is to make sure they can’t physically get in.
Steel wool is a great filler if you have any holes in your drywall or outer walls. Mice can’t chew through it, and it will not deteriorate over time as other fillers will. For smaller cracks in siding and baseboards, caulk is a great material that will hold up over time and help prevent a mouse infestation.
Trim Shrubs and Bushes
Mice are attracted to any place they can build a nest or find food. Because of this, trees and shrubs are a perfect habitat for them, especially if they’re overgrown. When your vegetation doesn’t get trimmed, it will fall on the ground and rot, attracting beetles and grubs. In turn, mice will be more likely to make their nests near your home where they can eat these insects.
Keeping your vegetation trimmed will not only keep mice away but will also help prevent infestations by other pests. Rotting vegetation is a perfect attractant for all kinds of rodents, insects, and wildlife. Cleaning up any leaf litter or fallen branches is a great first step towards prevention.
Seal Up Trash Cans
Your trash cans are a perfect attractant for mice. This is especially true if you regularly throw away food scraps without sealing up your bags. Mice have a very keen sense of smell and can find food very easily. If your trash cans are easy to get into, you are almost guaranteed to have mice.
Keep the lids on your cans sealed and secured to make sure mice don’t get into your garbage. You should also make sure to tie up your trash bags and knot them tightly. You can also sprinkle a bit of peppermint oil on your bags, which works as a deterrent for mice and all kinds of other wildlife. Plus, it will help prevent bad odors from emanating from the cans.
Check Nesting Areas
You should know whether there are any nesting areas in or around your home and check them regularly for nests. These can include spaces like under your sink, the corners of your attic, or the loft space in your garage. It’s also a good idea to check near or behind your furnace, especially in the winter. Mice will often build their nests where it is warmest.
Signs of a nest include gatherings of fur or fibers, mouse droppings, or you may even see a dead mouse. If you encounter any of these things, it is best to call a pest management professional. They will remove the nests and give you pointers on how to best keep mice from coming back.
Install Noise Deterrents
One of the best, most humane ways to keep mice away is to use noise deterrents. Mice are very sensitive to noise, and there are a variety of noise deterrents available that can be set up in your yard or around your home. These noises are inaudible to you and your pets, but they’ll be enough to keep mice away from your home in a wide radius.
