How to Weed Around a Cactus

A weedy cactus bed looks unattractive and the weeds rob necessary soil moisture from the cactus plant. Getting close to the spiny plants to pull the weeds isn’t an enjoyable task, but hand weeding provides the best means for removing the unwanted plants without damaging the cactus. Protecting yourself and the cactus while using the right tools for weed removal keeps the bed weed free. Frequent weeding, when you first notice the unwanted plants, further simplifies the process since the weeds won’t become established around the cactus.

Cacti and Succulents:Tiny pebbles on top of cactus soil?

My objection to perlite is cosmetic. Worse yet are those #@^&* styrofoam particles that some companies mix in; they contaminate my compost!!!

I make up my own succulent (and non-succulent) potting soil. There is a better selection of gravel at the independent stone yards. I buy “play sand” for about $3 per 50# bag; 3/8″ pea gravel for $4 per 50#; and “red rock” chips of whatever size I need. I mix the sand and gravel into peat moss (I buy bales at the beginning of the gardening season; I use it as mulch). I also have a few bags of “garden soil” on hand (HD!). I mix small batches of soil in one of those black plastic trays used for cement. I often make soil per plant; since pots and plants are different sizes, I custom-mix the soil for the larger plants. I use a piece of plastic screen over the drain hole (held in place w/ bosai wire), then a layer of the pea gravel, a layer of sand, then a “cone” of the soil I mixed; and place the plant’s base on top of the cone. (Important to hose off the old soil, particularly if it came from a place that uses styrofoam!). Then I backfill around the roots, which I’ve spread out around the side of my cone. I stop filling when I’m at the top of the root ball, then I top-dress with whatever suits me; sand, gravel, or red rock chips. I LOVE the red rock chips! I use them to prop up the stems of weaker plants.

I used to be really into bonsai, and took a few classes. The bonsai growers were really keen on selling me their “special” bonsai soil-less mix at $40 per bag!!! I bought a small amount and took a good look at it. All it seemed to be was mixed gravel and terra-cotta bits!!! It also killed my plants. All plants need something to derive their nutrients from! That’s how my method of potting was born…

Also, the thin bonsai wire is very helpful to hold plants in the pots. If you have a top-heavy plant, you can gently wind the bonsai wire around the roots, and push it through the screen mesh and make a “L” shape with the wire against the bottom of the pot; that’ll hold it in come toddler or feline.

Vinegar and cactus…is this true?

Tap water is hard on cactus plants and will gradually cause them to stop growing, and more and more growers are using white vinegar to modify tap water for healthier cactus plants. There is a great article on this subject in the September through October 2008 issue of the Cactus and Succulent Journal put out by the CSSA, The Cactus and Succulent Society of America. We never use tap water on any cactus plant, but this is surely important enough to write about on this web page. The recommended amount in the Cactus and Succulent Journal of white vinegar to modify tap water is one table spoon for five gallons of water. By my math for smaller amounts use 9 drops of white vinegar in one quart of tap water or .26 cc of white vinegar in one litre of tap water and the water will be safer to use on cacti. If it is unavoidable to use tap water it can be modified with white vinegar, and that will help keep cactus plants healthy. Rain water or distilled water will be better than tap water, but if tap water has to be used it is better to modify it with white vinegar. Water modified with white vinegar needs to be used or disposed of the same day it is mixed because it will spoil if stored.

I always let the water sit at least 24 hours, most often longer before watering. I just read this tonight and hadn’t heard of it before and want to see what you all think of this?
