How To Load a Canoe By Yourself (The Right Way)

Anyone who owns a canoe knows that because of its length and wider hull it can be a little awkward to try and carry. The same can go for lifting the canoe over your head if needed. When it comes time to transport the canoe, unless you have a partner to help out, you’re going to need to know how to load a canoe by yourself.

I remember when I was first confronted with having to figure out a way to load a canoe by myself, I was a little intimidated by the thought of trying to lift this long and awkward boat onto the top of my vehicle.

But, in reality, it’s not as much brute strength and lifting as it is using leverage and pivot points.

I’ll explain more what I mean by this further down in this post.

How Do You Load a Canoe Solo?

The method used to load the canoe onto a vehicle will be slightly different depending on the type of vehicle and the way that the canoe is transported.

Here are the main ways that a canoe is transported on a vehicle:

A roof rack or crossbars on a car or SUV

The bed of a pickup truck

A utility rack on a pickup truck

Hitch mounted extension for any vehicle with a hitch receiver

A canoe trailer pulled behind the vehicle

For this post, we’ll assume you don’t have a canoe trailer available and will be loading the canoe on top of your vehicle instead.

Each canoe transport method will require similar but slightly different steps to load a canoe solo.

First, it’s important to understand the right way to lift a canoe by yourself.

How Do You Lift a Canoe By Yourself?

If you’re the owner of a super-lightweight composite material canoe, you probably won’t have an issue lifting your canoe.

But, for the rest of us lugging around polyethylene canoes, there is a right way and a wrong way to lift a canoe by yourself.

It’s important to avoid injuries at all costs when lifting heavy objects, so remember, as a rule of thumb, always lift with your legs and not your back.

I’m sure everyone has heard this before, but it can’t be stressed enough. Back injuries are no joke.

With this said, can one person lift a canoe? Yes, this definitely can be done, even with heavier plastic and fiberglass canoes.

Below are the 6 steps to lift a canoe by yourself, assuming that the canoe is laying flat on the ground and not resting on a rack already.

Step 1: Turn The Canoe Upside Down

Start with the canoe lying hull side down on the ground. Turn the canoe over upside down so the hull is pointed up.

To do this, position yourself at the center of the canoe, and flip end-over-end so the gunwales are now facing the ground.

Step 2: Position Yourself at the Stern of the Canoe

With the canoe now upside down, walk to the stern of the canoe. This is where you’ll be lifting the canoe for the next steps.

Step 3: Lift the Stern of the Canoe Onto Your Shoulder

While keeping your back straight, squat down and lift the stern of the canoe, so the deck plate is resting on one shoulder.

Step 4: Walk the Gunwales to the Center of the Canoe

Use both hands to grab ahold of each gunwale. Lift the canoe slightly off your shoulder and “walk” the canoe down toward the center while shuffling both hands on the gunwales.

Step 5: Stop at the Center Yoke

When you get to the center yoke, stop and position the yoke on your shoulders. Brace the canoe with your hands on both sides and pop your head into the center of the canoe.

Step 6: Lift the Bow and Balance the Canoe Overhead

Finally, lift the bow of the canoe into the air, so the canoe is balanced on your hands and shoulders. By using this method, you’ll never have to lift the full weight of the canoe.

How To Load a Canoe By Yourself | Step-By-Step

No matter what vehicle you have, loading a canoe by yourself can be done. Whether it’s an SUV, a truck, a van, or a car the canoe can be loaded on the top of the vehicle by only one person using similar methods.

There are several common ways to transport a canoe, either by using the crossbars, a canoe roof rack, or a vertical hitch extender that will partially carry some of the load.

If you aren’t sure how to transport a canoe, or what a hitch extender is, first go look at these different ways to transport a canoe.

Loading a Canoe onto Crossbars or a Canoe Roof Rack

Step 1: Lift the Canoe Overhead

The first step to loading the canoe onto the SUV by yourself is to lift the canoe on your own.

Use the steps for lifting a canoe by yourself to get the canoe lifted over your head. You should be holding the canoe in the upside-down position.

Step 2: Rest the Bow of the Canoe on the Back of the SUV

While holding the canoe overhead, walk to the back of the SUV and lower the canoe so the bow is resting on the top of the back hatch of the SUV.

If you’re worried about scratching the paint on the SUV, it would be a good idea to place cardboard or cloth over the area first, so the canoe isn’t making direct contact with the paint.

Step 3: Slide the Canoe Into Place

Finally, walk to the stern of the canoe and lift it. At the same time, slide the canoe forward on the SUV to get it into place on the crossbars or the canoe roof rack.

Loading a Canoe Using a Hitch Extender

Step 1: Turn the Hitch Extender 90-degrees

The first step is to turn the vertical hitch extender 90 degrees to either the right or the left side. This will make it easier to get the canoe in place.

Step 2: Lift the Canoe Overhead

The starting point is to lift the canoe overhead, in the upside-down position. Remember to use the proper technique when lifting a canoe by yourself.

Step 3: Place the Bow of the Canoe on the Hitch Extender

With the canoe overhead, walk to the hitch extender and lay the bow of the canoe up against the hitch extender’s top arms. With the canoe in place, tie off the bow of the canoe so it won’t slide.

Step 4: Lift the Canoe and Rotate

Walk to the stern of the canoe and lift it, with the bow still tied to the hitch extender. Walk the canoe around to the front of the vehicle.

Tip: Have the front passenger or driver side door open for a step up.

Step 5: Place the Canoe on the Top of the Vehicle

With the canoe lifted overhead and walking to the front of the vehicle, step up or lift the canoe so the canoe is now fully resting on the roof of the vehicle.

Final Thoughts | How To Load a Canoe By Yourself

It doesn’t matter if you own an SUV, car, truck, or minivan. A canoe can be loaded by yourself. You don’t need to be strong to be able to load a canoe solo either.

The best ways require the least amount of strength. Using the vehicle or the hitch extender as a pivot point is key for how to load a canoe by yourself.

How To Tie A Canoe To Your Vehicle

Table of Contents hide 10 steps to tie a canoe to a roof rack 5 steps to transport a canoe without a roof rack Putting a canoe on your car is an important step for successfully making it to the put-in. Whether you are renting a canoe from an outfitter or you have your own gear, you are going to want to learn how to tie a canoe to your car. Read on for simple steps to follow whether you have a roof rack or not.

How to tie a canoe to a car When it comes to tying a canoe to a car, there are a few different options—it all depends on whether or not you have a roof rack. A roof rack is ideal, because it provides the most secure tie-down. It also reduces the risk of damaging your vehicle. If you don’t have a roof rack there are still other options out there for you.

10 steps to tie a canoe to a roof rack If your vehicle has a roof rack, you have one of the best situations for tying down a canoe. Follow the steps below to safely secure a canoe to a roof rack. 1 Lift canoe onto rack Lift the canoe up and onto the rack on the vehicle. This can be done with one person for lower vehicles, but it is always easier and safer when you have two people. 2 Protect the gunwales If you want to protect the gunwales on the canoe, you can put either foam blocks or cloth between the gunwales and racks of your vehicle. 3 Balance the canoe Balance the canoe on the crossbars so it does not tip forwards or backwards. Usually, this means the yoke is resting equally between the crossbars. Position the canoe so it is straight and perfectly in line with your vehicle. If it is slightly off-line, the wind will put uneven pressure on one side of your boat the entire drive.

4 Toss cam straps over top Standing on the passenger side of the vehicle, throw the non-buckle end of your cam strap to the other side of the vehicle. This step can be done for both the front and back strap of the canoe (one for each roof rack bar). 5 Wrap the straps and toss back On the driver’s side of the vehicle, wrap the strap around your roof rack bars and send the non-buckle side of the cam strap back overtop to the passenger side again. Do this for both the front and back strap. 6 Wrap and buckle the straps Take the non-buckle end of the cam strap and wrap it underneath the bar on the passenger side and up and through the buckle of the cam strap to begin the tightening process.

7 Tighten the straps Start with the buckle close to the bottom of the canoe (the highest point when the canoe is upside down) so that you have lots of room to pull the strap tight before the buckle hits the bar. Repeat for both back and front straps. 8 Tie off loose ends Once these straps are tight, tie off the loose ends so they are not flapping in the wind. 9 Tie bow and stern lines Finally, you want to secure both the front and back of the canoe with a bow and stern line. Every vehicle is going to have different spots to connect. Many vehicles have built-in attachment points under the front and back of the vehicle. If you don’t, you might want to consider purchasing hood/trunk tie-down loops which can be found at your local paddling shop or on Amazon. 10 Final check Do one final check to make sure the canoe is well connected to the car and you are all set to go. Try shaking the canoe with two hands—the vehicle should move with it.

5 steps to transport a canoe without a roof rack If your vehicle does not have a roof rack, there are other ways to secure the canoe to your vehicle. One of the best options is to use foam blocks that can be purchased at your local paddling shop.

1 Add foam blocks to gunwales While the canoe is on the ground, secure the foam blocks to each end of the canoe halfway between the yoke and the thwarts. Ideally they will be sitting close to the balance points of the canoe. 2 Lift and place canoe Next, either by yourself or with the help of a friend, lift the canoe up and place it on top of your vehicle. You may need to play around with the location of the foam blocks and the position of the canoe on the top of the vehicle. You do not want it too far forwards or backwards and ideally, it is perfectly balanced on the centre of your roof. This also means looking from the back of the vehicle to ensure the canoe is straight down the middle of your vehicle. If it is slightly off-line, the wind will be putting uneven pressure on one side of your boat the entire drive. 3 Strap it down Many people will use either cam straps or ratchet straps to secure the canoe to the roof by opening all car doors and actually doing a full wrap inside the vehicle and overtop of the canoe. This can cause damage to the padding around the outside of your door frame. Another option is to use rope and tie a trucker’s hitch knot in order to get the extra leverage to pull the canoe tight to the top of your vehicle.

4 Tie bow and stern lines Finally, you want to secure both the front and back of the canoe. Many vehicles have built-in attachment points under the front and back bumpers, but using these can cause the rope to rub or scratch your paint. You might want to consider purchasing hood/trunk tie-down loops which can be found at your local paddling shop or on Amazon.

Or, create your own tie-down points by bolting a loop of webbing to the inside skirt of your vehicle’s front quarter panel. Fold a 10-inch piece of webbing in half, burn a hole through both ends—I use a butane torch to heat a large spike for the burning operation—and then fasten it to the forward bolt which secures the quarter panel frame. 5 Final check Do one final check to make sure the canoe is well connected to the car and you are all set to go. Try shaking the canoe with two hands—the vehicle should move with it.
