How To Unlock a Honeywell Thermostat: Every Thermostat Series
RobotPoweredHome is reader-supported. When you buy through links on my blog, I may earn an affiliate commission. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.
When my sister came over with her two kids last week, I was woefully unprepared to deal with their energy.
The shenanigans began when I found that the temperature of the interior of the house was much lower than usual.
I immediately rushed to set my Honeywell thermostat back to normal and told the children not to mess with it again.
I looked up how to lock my Honeywell Thermostat’s keypad so that no one else could change the thermostat’s settings.
Naturally, I also looked up how to unlock my thermostat as well, so that I could change the settings myself whenever I wanted to.
To Unlock a Honeywell Thermostat, enter the PIN after prompting unlock.
To do this on the T4 Pro Series Honeywell Thermostat, press the “Unlock” button. On the T6 Pro Series, tap the lock symbol on the screen.
On the 8000 series, Hold down both the ‘System’ and ‘Auto’ options and then hold the blank lower center button.
I’ve also talked about how to lock all the different Honeywell Thermostats.
What are the different Lock Modes in Honeywell Thermostats?
The primary reason we lock our Honeywell thermostats is to allow us to control who can change our devices’ settings.
We have the option of locking the keypad of our devices with either a ‘Full’ lock or a ‘Partial’ lock.
You’ll be able to see this option when you access the ‘Menu’ section of your device.
There are three types of lock settings available in your Honeywell thermostats.
The names in the brackets denote how they are shown in the device:
Full (On): The ‘Full’ lock setting prevents complete access to the thermostat settings. Partial (Part): The ‘Partial’ lock setting will allow you to change the temperature. All the other settings will be inaccessible. Off (Off): The keypad of your thermostat will be unlocked in this lock setting.
The ‘On’ and ‘Part’ locking settings can be removed using a PIN.
Keep the locking setting as ‘Part’ if you tend to deviate from your schedule. Set your lock to ‘Full’ if you usually leave the device to work on a schedule.
This way, you’ll be saving time. However, please ensure that you don’t forget your lock code.
Entering the lock code will disable the lock mode, and the system switches into the ‘Off’ setting.
Use the guidelines given below to grasp the unlocking procedure of your Honeywell thermostats.

Maybe, you might not be a frequent user of the device, especially if you schedule the device timings properly.
Maybe, your kids might have changed the lock configuration of your device.
For the T4 Pro thermostat, the PIN usually will be 1234. To unlock Honeywell Pro series thermostat without pin, you would need to:
Remove your thermostat’s faceplate and find a four-digit number on the top right corner of the device. Add 1234 to this four-digit code. The number obtained after addition will be the PIN of your thermostat.

How To Keep Someone From Changing The Thermostat?
Disclosure: We may get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.
Are your children playing with the thermostat, changing the settings, and messing up with the heating and cooling? How do you prevent them from doing this? We researched this question and have the answer for you.
Modern thermostats have an option to lock access and programmatically prevent the temperature changes that a user would input. These thermostats should be unlocked first before a user can access the settings and change the temperature.
How about older thermostat models that do not have a way to lock the settings through the software? In the succeeding sections, we’ll provide alternative methods of preventing other people from changing your thermostat settings.
Read on!
How to keep someone from changing the thermostat?
Let’s elaborate on how to accomplish locking the thermostat in the example above, then we will talk about other ways to prevent people from changing the settings on your thermostat.
Locking the Nest thermostat
There are two ways to lock the Nest thermostat—through the Nest app on your phone or through the Settings menu on the Nest thermostat itself.
How to lock the Nest thermostat through the Nest app?
Here are the simple steps to lock your Nest thermostat using the Nest app on your phone:
You need to add your Google Nest thermostat to the list of Nest devices on the app before you can lock the thermostat from your phone. Once added to the list of Nest devices, select your Nest thermostat and go to Settings (gear icon on the upper right corner). Scroll down, and you’ll see the Lock option. Tap the Lock option. You will next see a screen that asks you to set a 4-digit PIN. Enter your preferred PIN twice. You will then see a window where you can set the minimum and maximum temperature among other settings.
Keep in mind that locking the Nest thermostat through the phone app limits you to a range of 5 degrees (for example, 60-65 degrees Fahrenheit) for the minimum and maximum temperatures.
Locking your Nest thermostat through the device doesn’t have this limitation. So you will need to lock your Nest on the thermostat and set the temperature there if you want to set it to a single value.
Anyone who tries to change the thermostat setting will only be able to change the temperature within the range that you’ve set. They will need to unlock the thermostat before they can access the settings. The same is true if they want to set the temperature beyond what you’ve set.
How to lock the Nest thermostat through the Nest device?
Here are the steps to lock your Nest thermostat on the device itself:
Press the ring of the Nest thermostat. Turn the ring to get to Settings. Press Settings to open it. Turn the ring once more until you get to the Lock option. Press the ring to confirm that you want to activate the Lock option. Enter a 4-digit PIN that you can easily remember. Enter it once more to confirm your PIN choice. If you locked your thermostat while in Heat•Cool mode, you’ll see the lock icon at the bottom of the screen to indicate that the Nest thermostat’s Lock option is currently active. If you locked your Nest thermostat while in Heat mode only or while in Cool mode only, you would need to specify a temperature range. Turn the ring to set your preferred temperature range, then press the ring to continue. Press the thermostat’s ring once to choose Done and lock the Nest thermostat or optionally select Change if you would like to make changes to the parameters of the Lock option. Your Nest thermostat’s lock option is active once the lock icon is present at the bottom of the screen.
The 3rd Generation Google Nest Learning Thermostat, a programmable, smart thermostat for your home in stainless steel, is available on Amazon. Check it out through this link.
How to unlock your Nest thermostat if you forgot your PIN?
It is only possible to unlock your Nest thermostat if it is online. You would need to contact Nest customer support to unlock your Nest thermostat if you locked it while it is offline and you lost your PIN.
Here are the steps to unlock your Nest thermostat without your PIN.
Open your Nest app. Select the Nest thermostat that you’d like to unlock. Tap the settings menu on the upper right corner of the app. Scroll down and tap the Unlock option.
How to change the PIN on Nest thermostat?
The PIN of your Nest thermostat can only be changed on the Nest app. Follow these simple steps to change the PIN of your Nest thermostat:
Follow the steps under the section “How to unlock your Nest thermostat if you forgot your PIN?”. Scroll down once more and tap the Lock option. Once you select the Lock option, your Nest app will automatically ask you for a new PIN. Unlocking your Nest thermostat through the Nest app automatically resets the PIN, and you need to assign a new one once you activate the Lock option once more.
What additional options are available to keep people from changing the thermostat?
Not all thermostats have the option to lock them through the software. Older thermostat models do not have this option.
Here are some of the things you can do to prevent people from changing the settings of a thermostat that doesn’t have a software lock option.
What is a thermostat lockbox?
A thermostat lockbox is a box that can be mounted on the wall of your home surrounding your thermostat. It has a large front opening to allow unobstructed access to the controls of your thermostat. A locking mechanism is installed either on top or at the bottom of the box.
It is often made of acrylic or transparent plastic. Some people made their own thermostat lockbox out of old metal or wooden boxes that have a wide lid that can give unhindered access to the controls of the thermostat.
Anyone without a key to the thermostat lockbox will not be able to open it and change the settings on the thermostat.
It is a simple way to secure the controls of your thermostat. However, it does have a drawback—it can be unsightly when installed on your wall. This is because the thermostat lockbox was not designed for aesthetic purposes.
The Honeywell Home CG511A1000 medium thermostat guard, a thermostat lockbox, is available on Amazon. Check it out through this link.
Can the thermostat lockbox be DIYed?
It can be DIYed from any existing lockbox that is wide and tall enough to secure your thermostat inside. You simply need to cut out the bottom of the box so that you can slip your thermostat inside. You will also need to drill holes on it so that you can screw it on the wall.
One thing to remember when making your own thermostat lockbox is that you will need to cut grills on all sides of the box to allow air to flow freely. Your thermostat needs free airflow to function properly.
What is a dummy thermostat?
Some office buildings across the nation have thermostats installed in plain sight but are not connected to the HVAC, reports USAToday.
The real thermostat is cleverly hidden behind false ceilings and other hard-to-reach places. The dummy thermostat simply gives employees a false feeling of being in control.
Homes can adopt a similar strategy to prevent people from changing the settings on an older model thermostat. A dummy thermostat can be installed and powered while the real thermostat is hidden somewhere else.
What are the effects of frequently changing the thermostat?
Here are some of the effects of frequently changing the thermostat:
Breakdowns
According to Ashley Brothers, frequent changes to your thermostat leads to HVAC breakdowns. They can lead to needless wear and tear of the components of HVAC systems.
Higher energy bills
Adjusting thermostats will force your HVAC to work extra hard to reach the new temperature setting. This leads to more energy consumed. An air conditioner or a furnace consumes more energy to change the temperature than maintaining a constant temperature.
Conclusion
A thermostat installed in the middle of a wall with nothing else can easily attract the attention of children. Unfortunately, rapid and frequent changes to the thermostat lead to higher energy bills and early breakdown of cooling and heating systems.
Modern thermostats recognize this issue and have included a lock function to address the issue. For older thermostats, a more direct method of preventing thermostat access is necessary.

Children
If you have children who like to be children and touch things they shouldn’t, you might want to lock the thermostat to avoid a spike in your power cost.
Airbnb
If you own an Airbnb, you could adjust the temperature to a specified setting that would save money on the energy cost. This could also be used to keep temporary renters from turning on the heat when they aren’t in the house.
Owner of a Building
Suppose you have an office space, for instance, and you have the legal authority to regulate the property’s temperature. In that case, you can opt to lock or temporarily lock the thermostat to maintain a steady temperature all through the structure.
2. How do I release the hold on a Honeywell thermostat?
Simply altering the thermostat temperature will eliminate a temporary hold. To remove a permanent hold, hit the ‘(+)’ and ‘-‘ buttons simultaneously, then tap ‘Cancel.’
3. For how long does a Honeywell thermostat hold function last?
It takes 12 hours for a temporary hold on a thermostat to be lifted. If your thermostat is set on permanent hold, you’ll have to override it to get it off manually.
4. Installing Your Thermostat Lock Box
It only takes a few minutes to install your new thermostat lock.
Place the lock box rear plate over the thermostat and mark the drill holes with a pencil.
Drill holes at each of these locations with a drill.
Plugin the wall plugs
Attach the rear plate to the wall using screws.
Attach the front of the lockbox and secure it.
Once you’ve installed your thermostat guard, all you have to do is choose a safe location to put your key and keep in mind you don’t lose it. You should expect a more functional building and lower utility expenditures as long as the thermostat lock guard is still in effect.
5. What You’ll Require for a Thermostat Guard Installation?
Installing the thermostat guard is a straightforward task that will most likely require just the equipment you already have on hand. Aside from the cover itself, you’ll need:
Pencil
Drill
Plugs for the wall
Screws
Screwdriver
6. Choosing the Most Appropriate Thermostat Lock Box
To begin, if you have a smart thermostat, see whether it has any virtual lock settings. You may be able to set a passcode to restrict temperature changes to just those who have been authorized. Otherwise, an actual thermostat cover will be required.
For the guard material, you have a couple of alternatives. First, plastic is commonly used for thermostat guards. These are inexpensive, long-lasting, and typically transparent, allowing you to see the thermostat without having to remove the cover.
A metal lockbox would be your second alternative. Because they’re so tough, they’re ideal for places where tampering is a possibility.
The disadvantage is that you can’t see the thermostat before unlocking it, and it can become very much heated if left in the sunlight. So once you’ve decided on the style of thermostat cover you prefer, make absolutely sure you check your thermostat so that you can get one with the correct measurements. The thermostat cover would then be installed.
7. What Is the Purpose of Thermostat Locks?
The ‘lock’ feature on thermostats, including those manufactured by Honeywell, is a relatively new addition. They were created for one simple reason: no one wants someone tampering with their thermostat. So instead of constantly resetting your thermostat to your preferred temperature, you can lock it, ensuring your children cannot reach it.
8. Is it possible to use lock functions on all Honeywell models?
You’re not alone if you don’t like the concept of a lock mechanism on your thermostat. The best part is that you do not need to purchase a Honeywell thermostat with a lock feature.
There are a lot of Honeywell thermostats that don’t have any lock function at all. If you don’t have children, a lock-free thermostat is a must.
Having said that, all Honeywell thermostats that are wi-fi enabled include a lock feature. If you don’t need to keep your touchscreen locked, unlock it and leave it unlocked.
9. Where Can You Get Honeywell Thermostat Unlocking Instructions?
Several Honeywell models with a lock mechanism provide directions on how to unlock it. However, the simplest approach to figuring out how to unlock the specific product is to consult the owner’s manual for the thermostat model you own.
If you are unsure of the model number of the thermostat, check the thermostat’s ID plate on the bottom of the thermostat.
10. Is It Possible to Change the Passcode on Your Thermostat?
The strange thing about a number of Honeywell’s lockable thermostats would be that you can’t alter the preset passcode.
While you may use a PIN to lock the touchscreen, someone who knows what the default configuration is would be able to customize the temperature in spite of your wishes.
11. Can You Always Leave Your Thermostat Unlocked?
While this is mostly a matter of personal opinion, the fact is that most individuals do not require their thermostats to be locked the majority of the time.
Most individuals do not go out of their way to increase or decrease the temperature on their thermostat. If you live in a house with a lot of adults who can follow the rules, there’s no excuse for keeping the thermostat locked.
