How to make a 2 stroke more powerful : increase rpm
Don’t let your 2 stroke hold you back power-wise…
Not when you can implement a couple of simple hacks to give it that long-overdue performance edge when out there.
Below we show you how to make a 2 stroke more powerful and make your racing beast the talk of the town.
Note that modifications we cover are helpful for anything with a 2 stroke engine – chainsaws, weed eaters, ocean-going merchant vessels, and more.
How to make a 2 stroke more powerful
The following tricks will bring big power gains if you’re bored with your current crappy overall engine power.
And the good thing is that most won’t break the bank.
1. Consider reed valve for more horsepower
Reed valves have been used for years in high-performance versions of two-stroke engines to control the fuel-air mixture flowing to the cylinder.
Specifically, a reed valve functions as a one way check valve so the mixture flows from the carb to the crankcase only.
This is important as it prevents the reverse flow of the fuel-air mixture to the carb meaning that the combustion chamber is only reloaded with fresh mixture.
This helps improve the power output by many two stroke engines.
Try adding an accomplished reed valve system such as Boyesen power reeds and see if it will do the trick.
2. Reduce the Squish gap
Once you’re through with the reed valve, it’s worth turning your attention to the squish gap.
For starters, this is the distance between the piston (when it’s at the top dead center of the compression stroke) and the combustion chamber (top or head).
More important is the fact that you can add the power generated by the engine by reducing the piston to head clearance.
It’s not even complicated…
Just sand down the head (or even the cylinder) or get someone to do it and see if it will take care of the power problems.
3. Down jet the engine
Here is another reason why your engine feels pretty awful: it’s not properly jetted.
And as you likely know, it can’t run the way it’s supposed to and you will keep losing to your buddies if you don’t do something.
This is no good and you could even be risking an engine detonation.
Solution?
You have no shortcut when it comes to this and you must down jet the engine to the edge of the detonation to have it produce optimal power.
Word of caution: aim to get the perfect balance (neither too rich nor too lean) when jetting to avoid hurting the engine.
4. Inspect your exhaust system
The other common suspect is the exhaust pipe and you don’t want to overlook it.
Here is the thing: your 2 stroke engine will never reach its full potential if there are resistance issues in the exhaust.
Getting rid of these troubles is not as difficult as you may have thought.
Simply take a close look and remove any restrictions or any stuck stuff inside the chamber.
5. Work on your intake
Research has shown that there’s some improvement in power with a modified intake system compared to original intake systems and it’s a procedure you may want to test.
Make no mistake- we don’t want you to replace the whole system.
Instead, we recommend that you straighten and shorten the intake length moderately.
This might promote better flow (the extra length sometimes impedes the flow), breathing new life into your engine.
6. Get the cylinder ported
A lot of owners report having the biggest gains after making changes to the ports and it could be the magical pill in your case as well.
As a rule of thumb, you should have the exhaust, intake, and all the transfer ports enlarged and shaped.
The expanded intake ports help air and gas to mix more thoroughly while the bigger exhaust ports expel fumes more efficiently.
This benefits the engine greatly and is one of the guaranteed ways of boosting performances in equipment featuring 2-stroke engines.
7. Check the Ignition timing
You may need to advance or retard the ignition timing too.
This is simply the timing at which a spark is released in the engine’s combustion chamber.
Now, having the best timing set is vital because the engine will be bogged down if the sparks occur too soon or extremely late in the cycle.
A likely sign of bad timing is excessive vibrations.
Tip: Typically, you will need to change the ignition timing settings anytime you have completed major engine changes/upgrades to achieve wider peak power.
8. Make your exhaust system stinger ID smaller
Sometimes the stinger ID is a bit large (manufacturers don’t want to risk you blowing up the setting) and that might be hampering performances.
If that is the case, the best approach is to invent and insert a form of restriction to the stinger ID.
Getting the rightly sized restriction is more of trial and error as you don’t want to go overboard, again risking a detonation.

From the word out there, there are a few other steps that could be effective.
Try the following:
· Do Some Carb work
You can buy the right carb inserts to enlarge the diameter of the carb.
In general, a carb with a bigger diameter works best for higher RPM power bands.
· Power Valve Spacer
You can send it out to a technician to install power valve spacers to the chamber.
They open up the power valve earlier making extra power.
· Higher octane gas

When it comes to racing, there are many things people disagree on. Personal preferences play a big role in every rider’s choice of bike, products, and riding style. One of the most common debates is 2-stroke vs 4-stroke. And the ultimate question is, which one is better? We can’t be the ones to answer that, but one thing is for sure, 2-strokes are making their comeback. They’re now present across all forms of riding and racing, which include Enduro, NHHA, Motocross (hobby, amateur, and professional levels), local enthusiasts, and Amateur MX.

So, what’s the difference? The difference between the two stroke and four stroke internal combustion engines have tortured riders for years now. Everyone has a different opinion or conflicting views, which leaves everyone wondering, which one really is better, and why? In the end, each individual rider collects their own data and makes their own objective opinion based on their personal preference. But here are the facts.
Technical Differences
A two stroke, unlike a four stroke, has three cycles that are combined into two strokes, meaning the intake, compression, and exhaust cycles are all integrated into the compression and power strokes of the engine. Because of this, there is no need for valves, which in turn makes the engine lighter and more compact.

They each have their pros and cons, which should all be considered if making a decision of two-stroke or four.
Deciding Factors
Bikes can be broken down into several different components that ultimately help riders decide between a two-stroke and four-stroke. The major factors are handling, power, and maintenance.
Handling
Light and nimble handling is a shared attribute of many 2-strokes, from mini to full-size.
When it comes to handling, this can sometimes be subjective from rider to rider. Although 2-strokes are lighter, that doesn’t always mean they are easier to ride. Handling ability will ultimately depend on the rider’s ability and their personal preference.That being said, two-strokes can be harder to ride because they demand more work from the rider. Some would argue that the increased work, effort, and interaction with the bike makes it more fun.
A four-stroke, on the other hand, offers more torque and power, which doesn’t require the rider to carry as much momentum, or pick as many strategic lines to make it over jumps and other obstacles. Somewhere around a couple decades ago, four-strokes began their increase in popularity, and many of us have become spoiled with the work these 450 machines put in, and some of us have forgotten the joy and excitement that comes from putting in the work on a good ol’ two-stroke.
I sat down with 1980 Supercross Champion, Mike Bell and got his opinion on two-strokes vs four-strokes. He didn’t think twice before answering that he prefers two-strokes. So, I asked: Why?
“Four-strokes go back to the core of what motocross is and was. Four-strokes have become so technical, they didn’t start out that way, but they have evolved into something so intricate that the average guy just can’t maintain. Two-strokes go back to fast, fun, and affordable. Which is why we all get involved in the sport to begin with.”

Fast, fun, and affordable. It sounds like the industry had lost sight of that, but it’s great to see two-strokes back on the scene and competing in the racing world, taking many of us back to the core of what riding is all about.
Power
Power delivery is a major difference between the respective engine types. two-strokes rev high and fast, and require a lot of clutch work. They make power in higher rpms, and when they “get on the pipe,” or are running in their prime power band range, that’s when you really feel them pull and keep pulling.
These days, four-stroke power delivery depends a lot on how the bike is mapped. Before fuel injection, a lot of 450 motocross bikes had a hard hit and a lot of power that needed to be controlled. Even before that, the earlier air-cooled four-strokes felt heavy and more lethargic. Fast forward back to the present, mapping can make a four-strokes power incredibly linear and usable, or it can give it a hit hard enough to be clearing Supercross triples out of 2nd gear corners.
The 4-stroke engine design produces more torque, and puts usable power to the ground. In many cases, modern 4-strokes have become easier and easier to ride than their 2-stroke counterparts.
One common trait among four-strokes is their ability to put power to the ground. In hard pack conditions or situations where traction is limited, four-strokes have a clear advantage. Inside ruts, hard pack dirt, and throttle finesse are just a few things that 4-stroke riders have come to enjoy. This is because of the four-stroke’s engine cycle when producing power. Since a four-stroke makes power on every other stroke of the piston, it allows the power to be much more manageable. Without power to the wheel on every stroke, the milliseconds in difference keep wheel spin to a minimum.
Maintenance
Not necessarily the fun part, but it is necessary to instill a long life for your bike. In the past, two-strokes sometimes struggled in this department, with piston seizures being all too common. But, this is a problem of the past, with technology and manufacturing innovation at an all-time high, two-strokes have made a comeback.
Two-stroke engine technology as a whole has had slow progression, with the majority of new two-strokes in showrooms still having carburetors. But, as the old adage goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right? ProX has been in the two-stroke piston industry since 1975, and they’ve made sure their piston innovation has always kept up with the development of new bikes. Supercharged Two Stroke Engine By Dhruv Panchal
I am sure that most of you have already made so many thoughts in your mind by just reading the title; A Supercharged Two Stroke engine. It is one step ahead of two stroke engine. Let’s first discuss some common advantages and disadvantages of two stroke engine. Most of us know how the two stroke engine works. It uses only two strokes to produce power from air fuel mixture. We cannot distinguish between the suction, compression, power and exhaust strokes.
Two stroke engine uses ports instead of inlet and exhaust valves: Inlet port, Transfer port and Exhaust port. Opening of these ports are controlled by piston movement only. No separate mechanisms are provided to operate these ports.
At high speed of two stroke engine, these ports overlap with each other and increase the loss of fresh charge from the cylinder. Let’s have some pros and cons of two stroke engine over four stroke.
Advantages
Two stroke engine is very light in weight because of fewer parts
More mechanical power output because of better turbulence in cylinder
Easier to manufacture and assemble
Less unbalance forces due to few reciprocating parts
Disadvantages
Loss of fresh charge from the cylinder at the time of scavenging, resulting in poor fuel efficiency
More emissions because of incomplete combustion at high speed
Very noisy
Despite of many more drawbacks from the two stroke engines, they are very popular for getting more mechanical power. One of my students thought to bring out some modifications for the two stroke engine to have improved fuel efficiency with more power at the same time. The only solution we got in our minds was supercharger. Some big machine like marine engines uses superchargers in two stroke engines.
Supercharger works like a turbine to throw the air in to the cylinder. This provides more air in to the cylinder than the engine naturally does. Excess air helps to ignite more fuel particles which generally left the engine without having combustion. This helps the engine to improve the power output at same RPM. But still we also have to improve the fuel efficiency.
Carburettor supplies the fuel air mixture to the cylinder without measuring the amount needed. Engine has to burn the supplied amount of air fuel mixture and if fails, it throws this charge in to the exhaust port without any combustion. That’s why, for getting better fuel consumption, we are planning to incorporate fuel injection rather than carburettor.
No doubt, we will have to work more to have correct injection timing, otherwise it will again leads to more fuel consumption. Finally let me explain you hoe these all components going to work for our triumph. We are going to shut down the transfer port which is originally used to transfer the fresh air fuel mixture. At this place, we are planning to generate air vent for crank case ventilation.
The supercharger will be run by engine itself and will provide excess amount of air to the cylinder. This air will try to scavenge all exhaust gases from the cylinder to the exhaust port. Write now, this scavenging is done by fresh air fuel mixture coming from the transfer port, which also helps the fresh charge to escape from the cylinder. In our set up, only the air will be going to escape the cylinder.
After the proper scavenging and at the right time, we will inject the fuel in the inlet port of the engine. After the injection, air and fuel will get mix because of turbulence and will get combust with the help of spark plug. As we are going to supply sufficient air for the fuel for combustion, the efficiency will also improve and so as the emissions.
At present, we are doing literature survey on this type of combinations. This will help us to locate and operate the systems efficiently. We can also defend our work on the basis of this literature survey. We have planned to complete the fabrication and commissioning of this project till December 2011. I assure you all that we will definitely discuss the results of my project whatever and whenever it may be. Please share your ideas and experience to improve my success rate for this project.
