Help! My Dress Is Too Short!
My body image has changed over the last couple of years. I went through a phase about four years ago where I shortened all of my dresses and skirts. Then two years ago I decided they were all too short and went and lengthened those that I could.
Don’t ask.
I still have a few items in my closet that are too short but I like them too much to take them to the consignment store.
Such as this dress.
I bought the dress in a moment of weakness about three years ago from Ruche online just before my birthday. I like to give myself birthday gifts in advance.
Just to be prepared.
In case everyone else forgets.
Always have a back-up plan I say.
But…as you can see…the dress is short. Returns from Canada back to the States are a nightmare and cost big bucks, so I kept it.
I’m 5’4″. What does someone do that is 3-4″ taller than me? Other than catch cold.
I don’t mind the dress with opaque tights. Which brings me to my 4 easy solutions to wear a dress that is too short.
4 Easy Solutions To Wear A Dress That Is Too Short
1. Sew on a few extra inches of coordinating fabric to the bottom of the dress.
I’ve done this with skirts as well.
2. Wear another skirt or petticoat underneath.
3. Wear leggings, jeans or pants under the dress.
4. Wear opaque tights with it.
Now I realise that the solution of wearing opaque tights might not work if you live in Florida or Hawaii. Even in Toronto (well in the past anyhow when we still had the seasons Spring & Summer) with our high humidity I wouldn’t want to wear tights in summer, but right now the temps are quite cool and ideal for tights.
I don’t think this dress would be attractive with another piece of fabric added to the bottom. How I wish there were more than a half an inch hem to let down.
What do you do when you find that a dress or skirt is too short for you? Take it to the thrift/consignment store? Or try work-arounds like me?

How To Stretch Tight Dress
Though most dresses are really easy to wear, some of them can be a little tricky to sport. Of course, we are talking about short dresses. How short is too short, how to wear a short dress modestly, how to look confident in a short dress – these questions are often heard but rarely addressed properly. Well, not anymore.
10 Tips To Wear A Short Dress
When it comes to dressing up, we all have been stuck in situations where we want to go short, but don’t know how to. So here is a list of all the important dos and don’ts of wearing a short dress that you use for a carefree and stylish day:
1. Wear Cycling Shorts Under Your Dress
No matter how cute they look, short dresses are prone to wardrobe malfunctions. So, as a part of your prevention plan, wear cycling shorts or boy shorts under your dress. Not only will they make you feel comfortable, but also won’t let your underwear show.
2. Avoid Super Tight Or Fitted Minis
Your dress should be snug enough to fit you at all the right places but not so tight that it borders on unflattering and looks like you are trying too hard. If your dress is too tight, it will move up your thighs as you sit or move, and you don’t want that now, do you? So, look for dresses that suit your body type. It is advisable to go short or tight, but not both! In case you are stuck with a dress that is, in fact, a little too tight (it’s okay, we have all made mistakes while shopping online), you can stretch it out at home… More on that later.
3. Limit The Accessories
Your legs are your biggest accessory when you are wearing a mini dress. Let them be the centre of attention and keep the rest of your accessories simple and minimal.
4. Balance The Skin Show
Image: Instagram
If you are wearing a dress that is showing off a lot of your legs, try keeping other parts of your body covered. For example, go for a mini dress with long sleeves. The key is to balance out the proportions of the look and not make it too revealing. This is a good trick to keep in mind to stay classy and modest while wearing a short dress.
5. Wear The Right Lingerie Underneath
Panty lines can kill a fabulous look, no matter how stunning the dress is. Wear seamless underwear to avoid this annoying problem. Invest in a quality body shaper to emphasize your curves. You can go for an underskirt also depending on the dress style. Know your lingerie to feel confident and comfy inside out.
6. Pick The Right Length
The definition of short can vary from person to person. So, how short is too short? The ideal length is right below your fingertips when you rest your arms on either side. Try not to go shorter than that. Not only will the right length keep you comfortable, but will complement your body too.
7. Moisturize Your Legs
One of the most important things that women often forget is to moisturize their legs properly. Dry and droughty legs are a big turn off, especially while carrying a short dress. Hence, apply a good moisturizer that will stay for a longer duration and give you the much-needed nourishment while you are at it. Groom your legs well and shine on, ladies!
8. Avoid Wearing High Heels
Image: Instagram
Avoid wearing high heels, as these will only make it harder to walk when you have to manage both a short dress and the risk of tripping or falling on uneven surfaces. Also, an elevated heel height will give the impression of an even shorter dress making you more uncomfortable. Go for comfy flats or sneakers and we promise you will feel more at ease. If you insist on wearing heels, go for smaller heels such as kitten heels.
9. Do A Quick Rain Check
Remember to take the weather into consideration. Check for a windy day before you don a flowing dress to walk around outside in. If wind decides to go against you, you could become a victim of the Marilyn Monroe moment. Oops!
10. Stop Adjusting Your Dress
In the end, it is all about how you carry yourself. If you get conscious and keep pulling your dress down to cover your legs, it can, and it will ruin your entire look. It will only attract unnecessary attention. For starters, don’t wear a dress that you aren’t comfortable in.
11. Play With The Hemline
Image: Instagram
Asymmetrical hemline or a high-low hemline will add a trendy spin to your short dress while covering more area of your legs. You can also opt for a dress with a deep slant cut.
Now that you have all the literature you possibly need on things to keep in mind while wearing a short dress, let us address some of the most important questions that make you put that mini back in the cupboard.
How To Feel Comfortable In A Short Dress?
Easy. All you have to do is follow the dos and don’ts mentioned above, read through all the FAQs that I have answered in the sections below and you will feel as comfortable in a short dress as you feel in jeans and T-shirt.
The quintessential thing to remember here is to wear the dress length you feel the comfiest and confident in. Everything else will fall in place.
What To Wear Under A Dress That’s Too Short?
If you are not used to wearing short dresses, even an inch higher than your comfort level will make you feel conscious. The solution isn’t to try anything new. Instead, try it with either of these easy tips:
1. As already mentioned in the first tip, you can wear a pair of cycling shorts underneath your dress. Make sure that the shorts are fully covered by the dress. They should not be visible from underneath. And if possible, go for a neutral colour like black or a nude that matches your skin tone. You can even match them to the colour of your dress.
2. If the length of your dress is as short as a tunic, you can also wear a pair of cool denim shorts or chino shorts underneath. This way, even if they become visible at some point, your outfit will lurk of style. Remember Katrina’s outfit in Choomantar from Mere Brother Ki Dulhan? She wore brown shorts under her red floral mini dress and paired it with boots. So modish!
3. You can also opt for stockings. They have the superpower to make any ordinary outfit look high street and classy. This will help you get rid of the worries, make you feel more confident and, best of all, you will be able to wear your favourite short dresses effortlessly.
How To Sit In A Short Dress?
Image: Instagram
Movement of any kind including sitting down, standing up or simply walking can be tricky with a short dress. But you don’t have to worry as long as you follow the ‘Bend it like Beckham’ rule. Well, maybe not exactly like Beckham.
1. While sitting, make sure to bend from your knees, keeping the hemline of your dress level rather than making the back come up with your forward movement.
2. Also, hold the back of your skirt close to your body with your hands before you bend over. Especially before sitting down, as it will keep the dress down and flat rather than hiked up or rumpled underneath you. Even when you are about to get up, your dress will be in place.
3. Keep your knees together or cross-legged (Meghan Markle style) when you are sitting on a chair or a couch. If you have to sit on the floor or a bean bag, sit on your shins and fold both your legs to one side.
4. As a countermeasure, you can also place a bag, jacket, or other clothing item or accessory over your lap when sitting to help avoid the risk of others seeing up your dress.
Can You Wear Tights Or Leggings With A Dress?
Of course, you can. The idea is to carry off the trends, whatever it is, in a way that makes you comfortable in your own skin. This, in turn, will make you feel confident and you won’t ever have to flaunt a frumpy OOTD ever again. Remember Jenny? Jenny Humphrey from Gossip Girl? Das what I’m talkin’ bout!
If you feel a little uncomfortable with how much skin you are showing with a short dress, pull on a pair of ankle-length tights or leggings underneath to cover up your legs. You can go with a classic black pair or experiment with small printed (think floral or polka dots) or striped tights for a chic look.
How To Wear A Short Dress In Winter?
Who says dresses belong only in summer. Just like a basic white tee, dresses, too, are all-season. In fact, all the stylish ways in which you can make a dress look bomb in winter, you can’t in any other weather. And I have just the word to sum it up – layering.
1. Add cardigans, jackets, and shrugs to your dress. This will help break up the short line of the dress and allow you to feel warm.
2. Try wearing a trench coat or any long coat over your dress. Keep it unfastened in the front so you can still show off your dress and bare legs while being covered from the back.
Image: Instagram
3. Speaking of bare legs, you can cover them with stockings or tights of your choice as mentioned above.
4. If you want to sport a bold look, I suggest you ditch the stockings and go straight for a pair of thigh-high boots. Lampshade your way into a stylish winter effortlessly.
5. Furthermore, you can accessorize with warm scarves, stoles or muffles and cute beanies. Include a pair of fuzzy gloves in your look to add some statement. Also a great option – knee-high socks or leg warmers.
Image: Instagram
6. Wear a thin but warm thermal underneath your dress so there is an extra (invisible) layer to protect you from the cold. You can opt for a sleeveless, short-sleeved or full-sleeved thermal depending on the dress style.
7. Not a fan of thermals? Not to worry. Another way to stylishly up your dress game in winter is by wearing a solid turtleneck underneath your dress. It will protect your upper half and add oodles of sophistication to your look.
8. Go for a sweater dress or dresses with, at least, some percentage of acrylic, polyester or other warm fabric in its composition. The dress by itself will keep you reasonably warm.

How To Keep The Short Dress From Riding Up?
Ah, the problem you and I have all fallen prey to. Whether it is a short dress or a mini skirt, the struggle to keep the hemline leveled is real. Mostly, it happens if the dress that you are wearing is too tight. But if that is not the case, fret not. Here are some fashion hacks that can help you with this:
1. Textured tights, like fishnet, lace, or self-ribbed can help keep a form-fitting dress from riding up.
2. This one may sound a little weird but putting a thin layer of hairspray over your legs and the top of your thighs can be extremely helpful. It is the same trick used by gymnasts to keep their leotards in place. Make sure that your skin is not allergic to the hairspray. Do a patch test before priming hairspray all over your legs.
3. You can use thin double-sided tape to stick your dress to your thighs but this hack works best with form-fitting dresses such as bodycon. If you are going for the tape method, make sure your legs are well groomed to avoid any skin-pulling while you move.
4. The friction from shapewear with the silkiest of material can help keep your hands and mind free from the possibility of your dress riding up or moving from side-to-side.
5. Sometimes, the dress ladders up the cycling shorts. So, be very sure of the material of your safety shorts. Opt for ones made from stretchy materials – the friction will take care of the rest.
How To Stretch Out A Tight Dress
Image: Instagram
As promised above, here are some easy tricks and hacks that can help you stretch out a dress without disturbing its form. But first things first, whatever you do, DO NOT wash the dress as that can further tighten it by shrinking the material. Try one of these things:
1. Just like you break into a new pair of shoes to avoid shoe bites, wear your dress at home ahead of time. In fact, wear it with another dress or a pair of shorts and a regular-fit top underneath to allow extra space for when you actually have to wear it.
2. The most tried and trusted way to stretch out a cotton or linen dress is to wet it and stretch it. All you have to do is soak the dress in water and baby shampoo/conditioner solution for half an hour. Remove it and gently wring out excess water so it is damp enough to stretch. Lay the dress flat on a clean and dry cloth, gently stretch it out pulling the sleeves, waistline and hemline to the desired length, and place a heavy object or a weight on every corner to hold it. Leave the weights on until the dress dries completely.
P.S. This can take anywhere from a few hours to a full day, so make sure that you allow plenty of time for the dress to dry and form. If you want to speed up the process, try using a blow dryer on low speed.
4. If all else fails, trust your tailor to help you re-form your dress or add additional fabric to it.
Now, what am I missing? Yes, of course, a cute dress, that’s who! Want a great dress to remind yourself what is beautiful about life? Here are 10 dresses, short and not-so-short, that will take you places.

How to STOP Dresses from Riding Up
Does your dress ride up anytime you walk or sit down? Relax, we are going to tell you why such may happen and possible solutions to the same. We carried out thorough research and tried a few samples, and came out with the information highlighted in this article.
We have considered both long and short dresses. If you don’t have an appealing shape and want to put on a short dress, you can follow the tips to make sure you are comfortable all the time.
What is a dress?
A dress is a type of clothing worn by young girls and women which covers both the upper body part and below your waist.
As mentioned above, a dress can be short or long. However, short dresses are the ones that ride up commonly. They seem to be designed to flatter a given body shape, but such body shapes are not the healthiest figures.
How Do I Stop My Dress from Riding Up as I Walk?
Riding up your dress is an embarrassment that ladies all over the world face, but it doesn’t have to be a major issue for you! All you need to know is how to take care of your outfit so that you can stroll with confidence.
Choosing a dress made of a stretchy material like spandex is one possible solution to this problem. You’ll need to make sure that the fabric used to make your dress is elastic so that it hangs naturally.
Another reason to ensure that the material is elastic is that if the dress is made of rigid fabric, it will add excessive mass to your body, causing unnecessary stress on your body and legs.
It is simply too tight for your body curves if a dress is riding up. To make your dress even looser than it currently is, apply a little layer of hairspray over your lower legs and thighs or stitch in an extra inch of cloth beneath your hips.
Another strategy to deal with the issue is to avoid wearing short dresses as much as possible. When you wear a short dress, the pressure on your hips, waist, and back is taken.
Why Does My Dress Ride Up?
The dress appears and feels so short when it keeps riding up as you move or walk. If you are not aware of why this happens, read them down below.
The dress material is thin.
You must have observed that short dresses with light fabrics are the ones that ride up the most. You don’t need to spend the entire day trying to keep your dress down. So, the next time you put one on, make sure it’s made of a thicker or heavier fabric.
The dress is of the wrong size.
You could be wondering why your dress is riding up as you walk, despite the fact that it looked good on you when you tried it on at the mall. You couldn’t tell if that short dress was the proper size because your movements were restricted in the fitting room.
It would be better if you tried on your precise size as well as a size larger. Find out which size looks best on you. If the larger size does not ride up but does not fit well, there is still enough material to modify your dress to make it fit properly.
The dress is the wrong style for your body shape.
Each of us has a distinct body shape and structure. As a result, you may find a dress that’s not the proper style for your body type, making it ride up your thigh.
There are so many different types of dresses to pick from. There will always be more that would look excellent on you and that you could wear confidently and comfortably.
The dress is just too short.
Some gowns are designed too short. Although it appears to be riding up, there is no way to go except up because there isn’t enough fabric to cover most of your thighs. Short dresses like these should be avoided because they are hard to fix. Alternatively, you can layer them with tights in the winter.
How To Stop A Short Dress from Riding Up?
What’s the best way to keep a short dress from riding up? Why do short dresses ride up even when your arms are short? How do short dresses stay up when you’re running? When you put your weight on a short dress, why does it ride up? With these short dress tricks, you may learn how to accomplish these stunts.
The first trick is straightforward. Cut off a few inches from the bottom of your dress and stitch them together. This results in a large portion that runs the length of your leg.
The bottom half of your clothing can then be sewn together and hemmed. This will make your dress ride up, but it will also give you more height.
The second technique is similar to the first but differs slightly. Rather than cutting a portion of your dress off, you fold it in half, form a triangle, and stitch one edge.
Check that your stitching is straight and not clumpy. Your short dress now rides up like a short dress, but with the added benefit of heightening your cloth.
What to wear under a Dress that is Too Short?
One of the most difficult things to accomplish if you want to look sexy is to wear a short dress since it entirely affects the nature of your figure.
If you have a smaller waistline, a short dress will make your waist appear smaller, giving the impression that you are wearing two separate outfits.
Furthermore, compared to a standard full-length dress, the amount of skin exposed will be far greater. As a result, great caution is required when wearing a short dress, especially to a party.
If you’re going to a party in a short dress, keep in mind that the main goal is to hide that you’re wearing a short dress. To make your legs look a lot sexier, buy a dress in the perfect size and then choose some bright colors like white, red, or even black.
However, this does not imply that you should wear a very short dress. Choose a dress that is a little longer so that your legs are displayed a little more.
How To Sit With a Short Dress?
What should you do with a “mini,” “little black dress,” or similar style in your closet? I’ll give you a few examples off the top of my head: Wear a thin cardigan or cotton blouse over a sweater or other long-sleeved garment.
Wear a dress that is a few inches longer than your short dress for a more relaxed vibe. Alternatively, layer your mini or full dress with a long or short dress. Wear a shorter dress underneath your long dress or mini for an attractive look.
The trick to these looks is maintaining the dress at or just above the hip length. The reason for this is to make your dress rise slightly, drawing attention to your torso. It also aids in the appearance of longer legs.
This isn’t as much of a concern when wearing a little dress because it’s so short. On the other hand, shortening the dress serves to extend your legs and draws your attention down. I recommend keeping the dress below the knee or slightly longer for a traditional style, depending on the clothing.
4 Dress Weights to Keep Your Hem Down
Dress weights, commonly referred to as hem weights, are heavy items that can be sewed or taped onto dresses, shorts, skirts, and pants. Their function is to weigh down a fabric so that it does not blow up in the wind. They also keep your clothes from lifting when you walk, resting strangely on your body, or sticking to your bum. It’s yet another approach to ensuring that your clothes are high quality.
Hem weights aren’t a new item. According to antique merchants, many dresses from the early 1800s had them sewed onto the hem. Dressmakers used weighted cords to weigh down and shape their garments.
We are fortunate to have a variety of options now, ranging from sew-in weights to stick-ons. Our best advice is to have weights sewed into your clothing by a tailor. The weights will not show if they are well sewed in, whether in direct sunshine or when seated. You won’t have to be concerned about them sliding off either.
Sew-in circular weights
These weights can be sewed into the hem at key locations. A few circular weights can be sewed down along the seams and towards the bottom, if you need more weight. The advantage of these weights is that they help with sewing. It won’t take much threading to keep them in place. They’re also little, so they’ll be less visible if you don’t cover them with a cloth.

Weighted cord for draperies
This weight works best with hand-made or custom-made garments. These weights must be covered with fabric, which is best done with the original fabric. If you have a dress or skirt that needs to be shortened, you can do it by wrapping some of the fabric around the cord.
Sew-in coins
Yes, small coins, such as pennies and dimes, can be sewed into your hem by stitching a patch of cloth in a similar color to your clothing around the coin and then sewing the patch to your cloth. You can sew a box (with four sides) or an open box (with three sides, which allows you to remove and replace coins as needed.
Weighted stick-ons
Stick-on weights are inexpensive, quick, and simple to use. We do not believe they are the best option. They are, nonetheless, a viable choice, in our opinion.
How to stop your dress from riding up on windy days
Leave it on a windy day to increase your worry if you’re wearing a dress. Even Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, one time found herself upwind at airports and charity events, nearly causing Marilyn Monroe flyaway moments.
While we may not be as well-known as the former Kate Middleton, being on dress patrol every time we go outside can be inconvenient.
We like how simple and quick this solution is for calming your fears about the wind. Though temporary, it is best if you need something quick and only requires a few items, one of which you probably already have in your pocket or handbag.
What you’ll need:
Nickels for heavier clothes and pennies or dimes for thinner threads
Fashion tape or scotch tape
Dress, dress or wide-leg pants
Procedure:
Get nickels or dimes as per the weight of your cloth. Lighter dimes are best for cotton and silks, while heavy nickels work best for thicker linens and tweeds.
Sew the coin on the seam of the hemline to hide it.
Stitch the coin using a fashion tape along the line of the seam. Scotch tape can also work if you can’t find a fashion tape.
Add three or four extra coins to make the hemline of your dress balanced. Two coins are also enough for each cuff of wide-leg pants. Remember to remove the coins before washing.
