Negative Rules

The introduction of extra parts that are unattached and may be lost, thus reducing functionality or increasing of ownership cost due to replacement. Some tablet cases, for instance, those that are waterproof, often come with separate audio attachments that maintain protection while using wired headphones. While that may be necessary for that protection feature it adds a part that must be carried in order to support a tablet feature and can be easily lost.

Don’t be deterred by this, as adding some extra bulk can aid handling and make dropping the device less likely. One issue can be that protective cases can be difficult to remove, but if you have a fantastic custom design people may not want to remove the case.

Knowing the Dimensions of Your Device

Knowing the dimensions of your device is essential to manufacturing tablet cases. If you get this wrong, you could waste a lot of time and money and end up with a useless product. You need to bear in mind that if you’re planning on manufacturing a custom case, there are two general kinds of cases available: model-specific cases, and generic ones.

Generic Vs Model-Specific

Generic cases are typically differentiated by the screen size of the tablet they fit, and they are more likely to be closer to tablet sleeves rather than actual form-fitting cases. That’s because they need to work with multiple models that have their ports, slots, back panel camera lenses, docking connectors, and other essential features, all in different places. This means, that with most generic cases, the user will need to remove the tablet from the case to use it. This is something you need to consider if you want to manufacture generic cases.

Model-specific cases are more typically what we think of as “cases.” They usually hug the tablet;s contours and they have cutaways for the devices ports so you can gain easy access while keeping the tablet fully protected. The downside of any model-specific case is that if you replace or upgrade your devices, it is very likely that the case will no longer work with the new tablet.

Size Guide

When looking to manufacture tablet cases, what you don’t want to do is just take the screen size into account. For example, two tablets may have the same screen size (10-inches), but a different screen aspect ratio. As a result, you may end up with a cover that doesn’t fit your tablet.

Key note: Always know the exact physical dimensions of your device – height, width, and depth. Make sure you write the dimensions of your device, in millimeters, centimeters, and inches. This will avoid any unfortunate mishaps with your chosen manufacturer.

Be careful when looking for tablet dimensions. For instance, if you find a case or sleeve that fits “iPad,” there are five generations of iPad already. So make sure you’re looking at the correct version.

Polycarbonate Tablet Cases

There are two different types of plastic that can be used to make hard tablet case: polycarbonate, and hard plastic. Let’s take a comprehensive look at the positives and negatives of each material.

A very strong material that is also used to make items such as eyeglasses, bulletproof windows, and CDs. if you drop your tablet in a polycarbonate case, the polycarbonate is designed to resist the impact and disperse the shock of the fall. The best polycarbonate tablet cases come with an inner silicone or fabric lining for added protection shock.

Many polycarbonate tablet manufacturers also offer additives or optional coatings to prevent scratching or degradation from UV ray exposure. Despite the durability of polycarbonate, it’s a lightweight material that won’t add too much extra weight.

The disadvantages of polycarbonate is that it’s prone to changing color with prolonged exposure to sunlight – although as previously mentioned, there are additives which can be applied to protect the case from UV rays. Silicone Cases

However, there are three basic categories of color theory that are logical and useful when it comes to designing your tablet case: the color wheel, color harmony, and the context of how colors are used.

Color theories will help you see a logical structure to the colors you may want to use. That will help make your tablet cases more attractive and memorable.

The Color Wheel

A color circle, based on red, yellow and blue, is traditional in the field of art and design. Originally developed by Sir Isaac Newton in 1666, scientist and artists have since studied and designed numerous variations of this concept. The color wheel presents a logically arranged sequence of pure hues.

There are three types of color wheels

Primary Colors

Red, yellow, and blue. In traditional color theory, primary colors are the three pigment colors that cannot be mixed or formed by any combination of other colors. All other colors are derived from these three hues.

Secondary Colors

Green, orange, and purple. These are the colors formed by mixing the primary colors.

Tertiary Colors

Yellow-orange, red-orange, red-purple, blue-purple, blue-green, and yellow-green. These are the colors formed by mixing a primary and a secondary color. That’s why the hue is a two-word name.

Color Harmony

You want your design to be visually pleasing to the eye. It engages the view and creates an inner sense of order, a balance in the visual experience. When a non-harmonious color scheme is used, it’s either boring or chaotic. At one extreme is a visual experience that is so bland that the viewer is not engaged. The human brain will reject under-stimulating information. The other extreme is a visual experience that is so overdone, so chaotic, that the viewer can’t stand to look at it. Making the importance of your tablet case design vitally important.

Some Formulas for Color Harmony

A color scheme based on analogous colors.

Analogous colors are any three colors which are side by side on a 12 part color wheel, such as yellow-green, yellow, and yellow-orange.

A color scheme based on complementary colors

Complementary colors are any two colors which are directly opposite each other, such as red and green or red-purple and yellow-green. Using opposing colors creates a maximum contrast and maximum stability.

How color behaves in relation to other colors and shapes is a complex area. The same color can have adverse or positive effects based on the background.

Red appears more brilliant against a black background and somewhat duller against the white background. In contrast with orange, the red appears lifeless. A red square would also appear larger on a black background than on other colored backgrounds.

Coloring your tablet cases adds to the customization, making them more valuable and desirable than plain tablet cases. The cube blend coloring method, also known as salt and pepper mixes, it works by using a dry masterbatch blend with a natural polymer. The process of coloring is normally done when there is no metering equipment (to feed the masterbatch color into the resin). This process allows the operator to have precise control over the final output. However, if they’re not careful, it is possible to have color variations through this process. The main advantage is that the majority of the polymer has not been previously melted, this helps preserve its original properties.

Pre-Colored Resins

This is one of the easiest and simplest ways to color plastic, the process involves pigments that are totally polymerized into a resin pack and is used by the molders as it is supplied. However, the ease of this process comes at a price: it’s harder to achieve exact color specifications. Occasionally pre-colored resins are used along with masterbatch that needs high let down ratios.

Branding Your Tablet Cases: Printing Methods

There are two processes you can go through, when branding your tablet case. You can opt to use sublimation printing; where your design is applied to blank tablet cases after it has been manufactured. This can be done through a range of printing methods and processes, e.g., dye sublimation heat transfer printing, screen printing, heat transfer printing, and digital UV printing. The second is to apply your design in the molding process, when manufacturing your tablet cases.

Here’s an overview of each printing process:

Dye-Sublimation Heat Transfer

Dye-sublimation printing is a digital printing technology that allows your manufacturer to transfer full-color artwork onto your tablet cases. It’s a process that uses the science of sublimation, where heat and pressure are applied to a solid, turning it into a gas through an endothermic reaction without passing through the liquid phase. Sounds complicated, but it’s not.

Your digital design is printed onto sublimation transfer sheets with unique dyes. It then requires a heat press process, which is a combination of time, temperature, and pressure. This combination results in a nearly permanent, high-resolution, full-color print. The dyes are infused into your tablet case on a molecular level, rather than applied at a topical level (such as screen printing). This means your design will not crack, fade, or peel from your tablet cases under normal conditions.

Screen Printing

Screen printing is a battle-tested stenciling technique that applies inked images onto your tablet cases. Also known as silkscreen serigraphy or serigraph printing, it uses a stencil, or a series of stencils to distribute the ink to the desired area(s) by being pressed through a porous screen (hence the name screen printing).

One of the biggest advantages of screen printing is its versatility. It’s able to apply durable images to virtually any printable surface, no matter what material you choose for your tablet cases. You’re able to print with heavy inks, this means you’ll get more color pigments – making your tablet case design bolder and brighter. Many screen-printed projects use PMS or “spot” colors. These are used for multi-colored designs, allowing each color to maintain its true vibrancy. You can add different coatings and additives to make the ink resistant to UV rays, moisture, scratches, and/or chemicals.

Heat Transfer Printing

Heat transfer is a printing process in which your design is printed onto special release paper using a plastisol-based ink. Once completed, your tablet case is left to cool, the release paper is peeled away and your image or design will have been transferred onto your tablet case.

Some of the advantages of heat transfer printing are that it’s inexpensive and can print complex images with many colors and intricate designs. However, it’s not practical for large quantities of printing due to it being time-consuming (each design must be cut one by one). It’s not a flexible when it comes to printing on different types of materials.

Digital UV Printing

Digital UV printing allows you to print a high-resolution, photo-quality images, logos, and detailed text onto your tablet cases, using ultra-violet lights to dry or cure ink as it is printed. It’s been described as “the future of commercial printing” due to its array of benefits.

It’s flexible, as you’re able to print on almost any surface. The UV printing allows for high-gloss levels, vibrant colors, an array of coatings and printing that’s crisp. UV inks tend to sit on top of the surface rather than absorbed into it – resulting in a sharper and crisper finishing. It’s resistant to scratches, wear and tear, as well as sun exposure. The faster curing speeds mean the dots of wet ink do not get a chance to spread out once printed, resulting in a pristine finish in finer detail.

Before you start sending off samples of your tablet case design, you’ll need to get the manufacturers to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement.

Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA)

You’re probably at the stage now where you have your case design, or you’ve created a brand new style of tablet case, you’re left with a few different manufacturers that you’re excited about testing out. However, your ideas need to be protected and you don’t want them to be exposed to everyone right away. A way you can protect your work and maintain confidentiality before your design is on display for all to see is to get your prospective tablet case manufacturer to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA).

NDAs are good practise for few reasons. If your tablet case manufacturer is not willing to sign, then you’ve got a super bright warning sign flashing right in your face. Secondly, if you’ve gone through the process of designing a brand new tablet case, with great features, these ideas are valuable to you. This should be shared and respected by those who manufactures your ideas. When they agree to an NDA, they’re demonstrating their understanding of the value of your ideas.

When to Sign

Once you’ve generally discussed your tablet case design with your manufacturer and determined that there is potential they’re a good fit, then you should ask them to sign before disclosing the specifics of your tablet case.

The Downside

An NDA is not a 100% guarantee that your tablet case design will be completely protected from copycats. NDAs can be difficult to enforce if its terms are violated, generally because your damages for breach of contract are speculative. Meaning there is no certain profit that you would have derived should your design come to life.

However, it’s far more advisable to have an NDA in your pocket than no protection for yourself. It also helps sets your level of expectation with the manufacturers you are considering.

Here’s an example of a basic Non-Disclosure Agreement:

This Nondisclosure Agreement (the “Agreement”) is entered into by and between _______________ with its principal offices at _______________ (“Disclosing Party”) and _______________, located at _______________ (“Receiving Party”) for the purpose of preventing the unauthorized disclosure of Confidential Information as defined below. The parties agree to enter into a confidential relationship with respect to the disclosure of certain proprietary and confidential information (“Confidential Information”).

Definition of Confidential Information . For purposes of this Agreement, “Confidential Information” shall include all information or material that has or could have commercial value or other utility in the business in which Disclosing Party is engaged. If Confidential Information is in written form, the Disclosing Party shall label or stamp the materials with the word “Confidential” or some similar warning. If Confidential Information is transmitted orally, the Disclosing Party shall promptly provide a writing indicating that such oral communication constituted Confidential Information.

Exclusions from Confidential Information . Receiving Party’s obligations under this Agreement do not extend to information that is: (a) publicly known at the time of disclosure or subsequently becomes publicly known through no fault of the Receiving Party; (b) discovered or created by the Receiving Party before disclosure by Disclosing Party; (c) learned by the Receiving Party through legitimate means other than from the Disclosing Party or Disclosing Party’s representatives; or (d) is disclosed by Receiving Party with Disclosing Party’s prior written approval.

Obligations of Receiving Party . Receiving Party shall hold and maintain the Confidential Information in strictest confidence for the sole and exclusive benefit of the Disclosing Party. Receiving Party shall carefully restrict access to Confidential Information to employees, contractors, and third parties as is reasonably required and shall require those persons to sign nondisclosure restrictions at least as protective as those in this Agreement. Receiving Party shall not, without prior written approval of Disclosing Party, use for Receiving Party’s own benefit, publish, copy, or otherwise disclose to others, or permit the use by others for their benefit or to the detriment of Disclosing Party, any Confidential Information. Receiving Party shall return to Disclosing Party any and all records, notes, and other written, printed, or tangible materials in its possession pertaining to Confidential Information immediately if Disclosing Party requests it in writing.

Time Periods . The nondisclosure provisions of this Agreement shall survive the termination of this Agreement and Receiving Party’s duty to hold Confidential Information in confidence shall remain in effect until the Confidential Information no longer qualifies as a trade secret or until Disclosing Party sends Receiving Party written notice releasing Receiving Party from this Agreement, whichever occurs first.

Relationships . Nothing contained in this Agreement shall be deemed to constitute either party a partner, joint venturer or employee of the other party for any purpose.

Severability . If a court finds any provision of this Agreement invalid or unenforceable, the remainder of this Agreement shall be interpreted so as best to effect the intent of the parties.

Integration . This Agreement expresses the complete understanding of the parties with respect to the subject matter and supersedes all prior proposals, agreements, representations, and understandings. This Agreement may not be amended except in a writing signed by both parties.

Waiver . The failure to exercise any right provided in this Agreement shall not be a waiver of prior or subsequent rights.

This Agreement and each party’s obligations shall be binding on the representatives, assigns, and successors of such party. Each party has signed this Agreement through its authorized representative.

Completing the Confidentiality Agreement

In the sample agreement, the “Disclosing Party” is the person disclosing secrets, and the “Receiving Party” is the person who receives the confidential information and is obligated to keep it secret. The terms are capitalized to indicate that they should be interpreted as defined within the agreement. The sample agreement is a “one-way” (or, in legalese, “unilateral”) agreement — that is, only one party is disclosing secrets. If each side is disclosing secrets to the other, you should modify the agreement to make it a mutual (or “bilateral”) nondisclosure agreement. To do that, substitute the following paragraph for the first paragraph in the agreement.

This Nondisclosure agreement (the “Agreement”) is entered into by and between ____ [insert your name, business form, and address] and ____ [insert name, business form, and address of other person or company with whom you are exchanging information] collectively referred to as the “parties” for the purpose of preventing the unauthorized disclosure of Confidential Information as defined below. The parties agree to enter into a confidential relationship with respect to the disclosure by one or each (the “Disclosing Party”) to the other (the “Receiving Party”) of certain proprietary and confidential information (the “Confidential Information”).

Getting your Quote

Once your NDA is signed, it’s time to start sending your design plans to prospective manufacturers and getting a quote. What’s important to remember, is that you need to have the different tablet manufacturers quote the same quantities and the same quality of material. Things to note:

Is the material the same and of the same quality?

Is it for the same number of units

Does the quote include shipping, duties, custom fees, etc? Or are you responsible?

If you’re getting a quote from a manufacturer in China, the quote will include terms such as FOB China (freight on board), or FOB (destination port). FOB China means the price quoted to you is for the goods to be delivered to the port in China. This means you will be responsible for shipping, duties, customs fees, insurance, etc. from China to your country. It’s important that you know the tablet cases tariff code and what these additional taxes add to the total cost. If you receive your quote and it’s FOB L.A (for example), this would mean all shipping, duties, and customs fees have been included as far as the Los Angeles port. You would then need to pay to get your tablet cases from the port to your final destination.

Buying Tablet Cases FOB China

If you’re buying tablet cases FOB China, then you would need to hire a customs broker and freight forwarder. Customs brokers or customs agents are individuals or firms licensed to enter and clear your product through customs for others. A freight forwarder is a person who is engaged in assembling, collecting, and consolidating shipping and distribution less than a trailer load (LTL) freight. You’ll need to contact various companies that handle both of these responsibilities to get a better understanding of what is involved.

Tips for Choosing your Customs Broker and Freight Forwarder

Look to see if you can find a broker who specializes or has experience in clearing tablet cases or similar products through customs.

If you have to clear your tablet cases through several ports, you should hire a broker with offices in those ports. A local one-office broker may give you a great service in their home port, but they’ll use sub-agents in other ports. This could lose a great deal of control.

The broker or freight forwarder must be fully automated with full connectivity to the tools necessary to partner with yourself

Freight forwarders: make sure you are requesting and receiving a copy of what was filed in AES on your behalf and that you are auditing the information. You need to make sure this was done properly if not, get it corrected as soon as you identify the error.

Customs brokers: they’ll need access to not only your local customs but, also various web portals and cargo tracking sites. Your broker should be able to communicate easily with you via telephone, email, and fax.

Ask for a reference from previous customers. You can also get relatively unbiased feedback from ocean and air carriers.

Make sure you have a written agreement and your freight forwarder and broker are on the same page about every aspect. This agreement should include the scope of work that you want the broker to perform, fee structure for each service, and operation procedures and contacts. Periodically review the agreement with your broker or freight forwarder and make adjustments to reflect any changes.

Expect some delays and plan for adjustments. However, if the adjustment period lasts longer than one month, you would need to reevaluate your situation.

If you have problems, call a meeting after two weeks to try and stop them.

Mistakes happen but, unresponsiveness, rude behavior, and improper activity shouldn’t be tolerated.

It’s vitally important that you select a customs broker who can handle your customs business efficiently and accurately. A good broker is an invaluable partner. Work closely with them on classification and valuation issues. This will help minimize entry errors and enhance compliance.

The wrong partner can cost you delays, errors on entries, and even fines. So take your time and do your homework.

Negotiating Your Quote

It is very common and most manufacturers will expect to negotiate the cost. So, sit on the quote for a day or two, then go back and ask for a better price. You know what you need to pay in order to meet your margins, it’s always good to have room for a distributor to get paid.

With currency fluctuations, quotes given are usually good for 30 days. So if you delay the order beyond this time frame, make sure you ask if the quote has changed in any way.

Shipping: Ocean Freight Vs. Air Freight

When it comes to shipping your tablet cases you’ll have the choice of shipping your product using ocean freight or air freight. Let’s take a look at some key factors you will need to consider.

Cost

The first thought that probably came to mind when you thought about which shipping method you’d prefer. The bottom line is, you have a budget and you’ll want to stick to it, so naturally you’ll need to know which is the cheaper option. Typically, shipping by the ocean is the cheaper option however, this is not always true.

So you can make the best decision, it helps if you have some knowledge about how carriers charge for international shipping. Airlines will bill you by what is called chargeable weight. Chargeable weight is calculated from a combination of the weight and size of your shipment. Ocean sea carriers charge per container rate, the

most common container sizes being 20’ and 40’. While weight can be a factor of the price from ocean carriers, their charge tends to be based on the volume of shipment. So for a larger and heavier shipment of tablet cases, ocean freight is often the cheaper option. The smaller and smaller the shipment is, the margin between the prices gets smaller, and sometimes air will even end up being less expensive.

You will also need to account for destination charges. Almost every time air freight will be a much faster option for you. If time is money, and you’re working on a tight deadline, this could more than make up for a higher cost. Many ocean freights can take around a month to arrive, whereas this can only be a few days with an air shipment.

Note: Technology keeps moving forward in the international shipping world, ships are getting faster, and canals have created shorter shipping routes. Some ocean freight shipments are being delivered in as few as 8 days.

Reliability

Something that you will definitely want to consider, how does ocean freight shipping compare to air freight? Although ocean freight shipping has a much longer history, air freight tends to win the battle of reliability. Flights can be delayed due to weather etc. but airlines tend to be very on top of their schedules. Ocean carriers have a reputation for being bad about this. It is not uncommon for a ship to fall behind on schedule. For most, a day or two won’t hurt cause serious damage, however, you’ll need to take this into account if you are very strict on your deadlines. Airlines usually work on daily schedules, back and forth between major cities, so if your cargo misses a flight, it doesn’t cause too much of a delay. Whereas, ships tend to work on weekly schedules, so missing a cutoff means a longer delay.

Environment

This may not be a big concern of yours, but for some people, and companies, it’s extremely important to lower their carbon footprint. If your company has a negative impact on the environment it can change the way people view your business. Ocean freight is the most environmentally friendly option here. Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are much higher during air freight transportation. Publicly available statistics shows that 1,000 kilograms of air freight will on average emit 500 grams of CO2 per kilometer on a standard cargo airplane. If your cargo is shipped by sea on a modern container vessel, the emissions are reduced to 15 grams per kilometer.

The Pre-production Process

Once you’ve selected the tablet case manufacturers you’d like to work with, and you’ve had your NDA agreed and signed, it’s time to start the preproduction process and see which manufacturer produces the best tablet case for the best price. You’ll need to send the manufacturers detailed design file, most of the problems caused when manufacturing products comes from unclear requirements up front.
