How to Make a Beautifully Easy Stretch Pencil Skirt

Are you as in love with pencil skirts as I am? I love how elegant and feminine they are. And I’m secretly in love with this stretchy version. It’s easy to make and tailored to fit your measurements. The best bit? It only takes an afternoon to make. Now there’s no reason not to have a wardrobe full of these little fashion beauties!

Supplies

1. Measure Up for Your Pattern

Step 1

Start by measuring around your waist. Note this measurement down as your waist measurement.

Measure around the largest part of your hip/thigh/bottom area. Note this down as your hip measurement.

Step 2

Measure from your waist to your hips. Note this down as your rise measurement.

Measure from your hips to your knees (or where you want the hemline to end). Note this down as the length measurement.

2. Make Your Pattern

Step 1

Make a pattern for a quarter of a skirt. Get out a large sheet of paper – wrapping paper or paper that’s been taped together will do just fine.

Draw a rectangle with its longest side against the edge of the paper. The rectangle should be as long as the rise and length measurements added together plus 4in (12cm) for the waistband and bottom hem.

The rectangle should be as wide as your hip measurement divided by four plus 1in (3cm) for seam allowance.

Step 2

Now to shape our skirt. Redraft the top width of the skirt so that it is as wide as your waist measure divided by 4 plus 1in (3cm) for seam allowance.

From the waistline you have just redrafted, measure out the length of your rise measurement plus 2in (6cm) for your waistband. Mark this point on the long side of your rectangle.

Gently curve the line running from the waist to the mark you just created. This will help give your skirt that classic “nipped in waist” cut.

Step 3

For a true pencil skirt, the skirt should curve in from the knees towards the bottom hem. Measure 2in (6cm) inwards from the outer bottom edge of the rectangle. Mark this point out.

Gently curve the skirt inwards towards this mark.

Cut out your pattern.

3. Cut Out Your Top

Step 1

Give your fabric a good tug from side to side and from top to bottom. One direction should feel more stretchy – this is the bias. This stretchy direction is what you want running across your hips and waist (as opposed to stretching down from waist to hem).

Step 2

Fold the fabric so the stretch is running from left to right (as opposed to up and down).

Place your pattern on the fold with the long, uncurved side against the fold. Pin your pattern in place. Cut around the pattern and you should have half a skirt.

Repeat to get another half of a skirt.

4. Pin and Sew Your Skirt

Step 1

Place the two halves of the skirt together, right sides together. Match the edges as best you can. Pin them together.

Step 2

Sew down the sides using a stretch or zig zag stitch and a half inch (1.5cm) seam allowance. Be sure to follow the curve of the skirt. You should end up with a tube of fabric that’s slightly tapered at the two ends.

You may need to try the skirt on at this point to check the fit. Different fabrics have different amount of stretch in them, so you may need to take the sides in a bit more if the fabric is really stretchy.

Step 3

Once you’re happy with the fit on the sides, trim the seam allowances to 1/5in (0.5cm).

4. Finish Off the Skirt

Step 1

Now you need to create a waistband and hem the bottom.

To create an even waistband, turn the skirt inside out and fold the fabric over by 1in (3cm).

Step 2

Fold the fabric over one more time and pin in place. You should now have a perfectly measured waistband with the fabric folded twice. This will lend extra stability to the waist (great for tucking in shirts!).

Step 3

Sew along the bottom edge of the waistband (the edge furthest away from the top edge) using a stretch or zig zag stitch.

Step 4

Repeat steps 1 to 4 for the bottom hem.

Wear Your New Pencil Skirt

And you’re finished. Well done!

Easy No-Hem Jersey Tube Skirt

It seems that lately, every week that I think I might get on top of things and organised with my sewing and blogging, then it all kind of ends up going a bit wayward instead. It’s still been rather stressful here at chez Dream. Cut. Sew. My father had to be admitted to a care home for the elderly last week and this time it’s permanent (well, I think it is…you never can tell these days, with all that keeps happening, so I never say never). There was a heck of stuff to sort out and on Friday exhaustion got the better of me with having to support mum through it all (she is missing dad dreadfully) and having to negotiate the perils and pitfalls of the British care system…not fun… So, I just downed tools and rested for a few days. I’d been making great progress with my ‘Day and Night Dress Challenge’ cocktail dress, but of course, that’s going to be revealed in a couple of weeks….soooo, no fresh recent makes to show you this week…..However, I thought that it was about time that I blogged about my easy no-hem jersey tube skirt which I actually made last year, oh well, better late than never. I have a couple more items like this…unblogged that is…., so I’ll make an effort to put that right this year. Ahh, actually, I say unblogged, in fact, I just remembered that this skirt did make a brief appearance on the blog last May in this post for MeMadeMay

Secret PJ’s Anyone?

I call my skirt easy because there really is minimal making and no hemming involved at all.This kind of skirt is what I like to think of as secret PJ’s. Add a cosy knit top and it’s a super comfy outfit to wear all day long. I actually have two and love wearing them both. They aren’t necessarily just for wearing in winter with thick tights either. I wear my striped one with bare legs, sandals and lightweight summer tees, well if we get a Summer that is. I’m prone to cold feet so it needs to be pretty darned hot for me to go bare legged. Why is it that I can be really warm everywhere else yet still have cold feet??

The Fabric

So, back to the skirt. The starting point is a nice fairly stretchy cotton or viscose lycra blend jersey. Just your regular nice quality tee-shirt-weight jersey…not the superfine tissue paper thick semi-see-through slubbed sort though. My striped one has a little polyester in it too I think and I bought it from Truro Fabrics. The plum-toned plaid one was made from fabric that I got from Stone Fabrics.

The Pattern

Ah, well, there is no pattern you see. At least, I didn’t use one. You could just use tailor’s chalk and measure and mark your fabric if you like. But if you want to make a quick pattern, get some tissue paper and draw out your shape. First, measure your desired length with 1.5” added to the top of it. At the top, for the width, you mark half of your hip measurement less about 1” and then mark down each side at that width for about 12” then gradually narrow the sides in a little so that at the hem your measurement is approximately 2” narrower. Add on 0.5” seam allowances down each side. The diagram below (with my measurements on) illustrates the shape and shows you what I mean (a picture paints a thousand words and all that). I prefer my skirt to go in a little towards the hem as it gives a nice silhouette and I find that I still have walking room. Just be careful not to go too narrow though…fair warning. My skirt isn’t overly tight either. I prefer a skimming fit, so barely any negative ease.

Fabric Layout

Open your fabric out width ways and fold horizontally so that your selvedges are doubled and at each side. You now have a fold all along the lower edge…this is your no-sew hem. Be careful to make sure your layers are smooth and flat. Pin or baste through the layers in a few places to make sure all is stable. Now cut out your back and front out through both layers. Here’s a diagram showing the layout:

Sewing Up

Do some more basting or pinning through the layers if you feel like you need to stabilise some more and then pin down each side seam and either stitch with a very narrow zig-zag and then overlock, or overlock with a 4 thread security stitch setting. Be aware that you’re going through 4 layers and if sewing stripes extra care needs to be taken with matching. My own striped fabric has and uneven wiggly stripe pattern and I matched up as best I could but obviously with thick and thick wavy stripes it was impossible to achieve perfect a match.

Press the side seam and then pull on to assess length and fit. Next, overlock the top edges and then fold over to the inside by 1.5”. Next, Insert 1” wide no-roll waist elastic, secure the ends together and close up the gape where it was inserted. Finally, attach hanging loops if desired. And voila… one comfy tube skirt!

I took Elli and Connor school clothes shopping last week, to get a few new things for their new school year. While walking through the little girl department, Elli saw these little knit Tube Skirts and said she wanted one in every color. I picked one up and almost threw it in the cart, but……. I. Just. Couldn’t. Yeah, they weren’t that expensive but I knew I had some cute knit fabric at home, check. And I knew I had wide elastic at home, check. I just couldn’t bring myself to purchase something as simple as that skirt, when I knew I had the stuff for it and could make it in like 2 seconds at home.

Okay, not 2 seconds……but like, 30 minutes.

And she said she wanted one in every color, while at the store…..so I couldn’t stop at just making one skirt.

The elastic waistband is enclosed in the same knit fabric and is attached to a slightly gathered skirt section, to give a little more space for the hips/bum area.

But while the skirt is on, it appears straight and not gathered in the slightest. (I Elli her tuck in her shirt, to show you…)

And wouldn’t you know, these Tube Skirts are stretchy and comfy and really great for school……..or play. (She’ll just have to wear some knit shorts under them because this girl still forgets to keep those knees together while sitting. Or swinging. Or hanging from the monkey bars. So, the knit shorts do the trick. 🙂 )

And truly, you can mix and match these little knit skirts with anything and have some fun with mixing prints and colors. (Do you remember back in the day, when everything had to match? The pink stripe in your shirt had to match the exact pink of your socks? Or your headband? If not, you weren’t matching…remember?! And mixing stripes with polka dots [or gasp, plaid!!] was such a no-no? Ha! I’m so glad that’s out. 🙂 )

However, I have washed and dried that shirt twice now……and yeah, it’s wrinkled up the petals a teeny bit, but it still looks puffy and super cute! Just an FYI.)

I have to admit, I was a little surprised Elli was even drawn to these skirts at the store, because they’re not frilly like she usually requests. Hmmmm, maybe she feels a little more grown up in them?? I’m not really sure, but I know she won’t be giving up ruffly skirts for a long while. She still loves them. Whatever works little Miss…….if you want to add a few straight Tube Skirts to your wardrobe, no prob, these are simple to make. 🙂

Do you have 30 minutes to make your own Tube Skirt??

Let’s whip up a few tube Skirts. But keep in mind, you will need KNIT fabric for this project. Knit is stretchy and will allow your subject to slip in and out of the skirt, without any problems. And will offer comfort while it’s being worn. A woven cotton would never slip over hips and would be impossible to wear and sit in, following these instructions.

Okay, first things first……cutting.

First, measure your subject’s (or your own) waist. Then cut a 2 inch wide piece of elastic the same length as the waist measurement. Then, cut a piece of fabric for the waist band that is the same length as the waist measurement but is 5.25 inches tall. And lastly multiply the waist measurement by 1.33 and that will give you the width measurement you need. (If it’s a crazy fraction, just round up.) Then, figure out the desired length of your skirt (above the knee, at the knee, below the knee, etc.) and then add 1.5 inches to that length. This number will be the height of this main fabric piece.

For example, Elli’s waist is 21 inches and I wanted the skirt to be 13 inches long. So I cut a piece of elastic that was 21 inches long and the waistband fabric piece 21 x 5.25 inches. Then, I multiplied 21 by 1.33 and that gave me 27.93…..so I rounded up to 28. So, I cut my main piece of fabric 28 inches wide by 14.5 (13 + 1.5) inches tall. That’s it.

Then, fold the main fabric piece in half (width wise), and sew the two ends together, using a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Repeat with the waistband piece of fabric.

Grab the waistband fabric and open up the seam and lay it flat.

Then fold the fabric in half, down onto itself, placing the wrong sides of the fabric together.

Keep folding and manipulating the fabric until the entire circle of fabric is folded in half onto itself.

Then, place the two ends of your elastic together, overlap by an inch, then sew the two ends down with a zig-zag stitch.

Then, open up your circle of fabric slightly and place your circle of elastic down inside of the fold. Line up the raw edges of fabric so that they’re even and pin in place, all the way around.

Then, sew around the top edge of the raw edges, sewing the two layers together. Use a zig-zag stitch and a 3/8 seam allowance.

Then, divide the top edge into eighths and place pins there to mark it. (To get your eighths, fold in half, place pins at both sides, fold in half the other way, place pins……and continue on until it’s divided evenly.

Divide the top edge of the skirt the same way and add pins to mark the 8 sections as well.

Now, match up the 8 pins of the waist band with the 8 pins on the skirt, lining up the raw edges of both.

Then, sew together from one pin to the next, pulling the waistband fabric slightly so that it’s the same length as the skirt fabric and sew. Once you let go, it will spring back. Continue all the way around the skirt, using a zig-zag stitch and a 1/2 inch seam allowance. (If you need another visual of this process, check out this elastic waistband skirt. Same idea…..except the elastic is exposed. The the pulling of the elastic while you’re sewing is the same.) Trim away any excess fabric.

Then fold up the bottom of your skirt 1 inch and pin in place.

Then sew a hem along the bottom of the skirt, 3/4 inches from the bottom, using a double needle. Need help using a double needle?? (You can also use a zig-zag stitch…….but using a straight stitch won’t work because then the hem of the skirt won’t stretch when it’s being worn.)

Now, don’t forget the last important step. Ironing.

Most likely, you have some puckers and a little bit of pulling that happened while sewing with your knit. Don’t worry, it happens to me too. But if you iron/steam your seams, you will see a huge difference. But be sure not to press and then pull the iron across the fabric…….just press, lift and then move to a new spot and press again. The steam will help the fabric kind of shrink up again, so don’t forget that either.

And just so you can see, here’s the top of the skirt before ironing…
