According to the Theory of Relativity, time and space are relative; that is, that the way they look and feel can change depending on different points of view. But what does that actually mean? How does that affect our world? And, most intriguingly, how are some of the oldest pieces of our universe also some of the youngest?

It can be difficult to always think in terms of the universe and outer space, so let’s look at a more earthbound example. This time, there are two poles on the same side of a railroad track, and you’re standing at the midpoint between them. Now imagine you have a mirror bent at a right angle that allows you to see both poles at the same time. Lightning simultaneously strikes both poles, and you see it hit both poles at the same moment.

But your friend is on a train coming down the track, and she also has one of those right-angle mirrors. When the train reaches the midpoint, right where you’re standing, lightning simultaneously strikes the two poles again. You observe the two strikes happening at the same time like before, but your friend doesn’t. Why?

It’s a Matter of Time

Your friend, who is on a moving train, will see the lightning strike the pole she’s moving toward first and the pole she’s moving away from after. We know that the speed of light is always constant, so one bolt of lightning isn’t moving any faster than the other. But the bolt she’s moving closer to has less and less distance to reach her eyes, while the bolt she’s moving away from has an ever-increasing distance to reach her.

The distance for you never changes because you’re not moving. So you see two events happen at the same time, and your friend sees them happen at different times. This happens because time is relative to what both of you are experiencing.

Jump to Light Speed

If you’re a fan of sci-fi, you’ve probably heard ship captains ordering a “jump to light speed,” or even ships having “FTL drives” that let them travel faster than light speed. There’s a reason that this is so popular in the sci-fi realm (and it’s not just because it lets characters get places faster).

It’s because the speed of light is the fastest thing possible — there is no faster-than-light speed because the maximum speed an object can ever achieve is the speed of light. And even reaching and sustaining the speed of light is not something we have the ability to do right now (just think of how much fuel it would take!). But if it were possible, it would let a lot of really cool things happen.

Time Stands Still

One of the coolest things that happens as an object approaches light speed is that time begins to slow down compared to time on Earth, and in fact gets slower and slower the closer it gets to achieving light speed.

This effect is called time dilation. Which basically means that the intervals of time begin to “stretch out” the faster you’re able to go. If you had a clock in your hand and another clock was able to zoom past you at near the speed of light, the clock sliding by you would appear to be ticking more slowly than the clock in your hand.

And this is how, if you were an astronaut who was able to board a ship that could travel at the speed of light, you could spend 20 years exploring the universe and get back home to Earth to find that over 300 years had passed. When you’re up in space hurtling around at light speed, time runs slower for you than it does for everyone back on Earth. Not only would your watch tick more slowly, but your heart rate would slow down, your breathing would slow down and your rate of aging would slow down.

The Fourth Dimension

You’ve obviously heard of 3D. It’s what makes movies look like they’re popping out at us, because in addition to length and width, they incorporate depth, just like our real world. These three dimensions make up space as we know it. But there’s a fourth dimension that also affects every object in space, and that dimension is time.

Whenever we move, we can see ourselves going from point A to point B. We have a sense of our movement through space. But we’re also moving through time. When you get out of bed in the morning and walk downstairs for breakfast, you’re not just traveling from bedroom to kitchen, you’re also “traveling” from 6:30 a.m. to 6:40 a.m.

So you can get a sense of how we can’t separate an object’s motion from time any more than we could from the distance it’s traveling or the space it’s taking up.

Time Travel?

Now here’s the fun part. If you’re just sitting around, all of your motion is focused into moving through just one of the four dimensions: time. You don’t normally think about sitting and playing on your phone as being a form of time travel, but you are technically moving forward in time.

Then you start moving, and some of your motion gets used up traveling through space, so you have less to use to travel through time. Of course, we can’t travel anywhere near fast enough for any difference to take place.

But what if we could? What if you could keep moving faster and faster, using up more and more of your motion for space and less and less for time? Guess what? If you were able to travel at the speed of light, all of your motion would be wrapped up in getting you to travel at the maximum speed through space, and there would be none left to help you travel through time — and, for you, time would stop.

At the speed of light, there is no passage of time. And this is why the photons that were produced during the Big Bang are still the same age they were when they first developed.

The simple answer is, “Yes, it is possible to stop time. All you need to do is travel at light speed.”

The practice is, admittedly, a bit more difficult.

Addressing this issue requires a more thorough exposition on Special Relativity, the first of Einstein’s two Relativity Theories. (Special – 1905; General – 1916). Special Relativity pertains specifically to light. The fundamental tenet is that light speed is constant in all inertial reference frames, hence the denotation of “c” in reference to light. To phrase this tenet in a more friendly manner, it means that a light beam’s speed remains unchanged even if the observer moves relative to it. This consistency is wholly foreign to us macroscopic world dwellers, because an automobile’s speed appears to increase if one is moving toward it and seems to decrease if one moves away from it. Light’s behavior is different.

We know that an object, or a light beam’s, speed measures the distance traversed over time. How can we reconcile this relationship with the fact that a light beam’s measured speed remains constant for all observers, moving or stationary? Time dilation affects this reconciliation.

Time dilates on moving vessels: the greater the speed, the greater the time dilation. Only when such velocities* approach light speed do such effects become significant. If, and this one of those extreme IF’s, a vessel could attain light speed, time aboard the vessel would cease altogether. Any person on that vessel would experience nothing at all. Though Spock and Kirk are able to trade barbs and witticisms at warp, in the real world, they would experience no time at all. Let’s say, to play with this fantasy world a bit, that a vessel moves at light speed from now (2014) to 2214. For us, two hundreds years would elapse. No time would pass at all on the vessel. What would be two centuries on Earth would be instantaneous on the ship.

Extremely strange, but, theoretically true.

Now, we ruin the moment when some pragmatism: accelerating a ship to such a velocity is not possible, at least not with our technology. The problem is that a vessel’s mass also increases with increasing speed. A vessel at light speed would have infinite mass! Special Relativity indicates that a vessel’s mass increases, length contracts with increasing velocity. Time dilation is not the only effect.

The fastest human made vessels, the Helios Probes I and II, established heliocentric orbits that were closer to the Sun than Mercury. Consequently, they attained speeds of more than 170,000 mph. Here, we extend as much credit to the Sun as to the engineers, for these impressive speeds. However, even the Helios probes moved at less than 1/3600th light speed: not particularly impressive by Starfleet standards.

Will we ever construct starships capable of light speed? (In so doing, we could send people to remote locations without worrying about them aging to dust or getting on each others’ nerves.) We can’t today, but who knows what humans will eventually accomplish? We certainly hope so.

*Using the terms ‘speed’ and ‘velocity’ interchangeably is not precisely an excommunication offense, but should be avoided. Speed is a scalar quantity: 100 mph or 90 kilometers per second are both speeds: values without direction. A psychology expert from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand is trying to understand the origins of personal attraction by studying changes in time perception.

Dr Joana Arantes is testing whether changes in time perception occur when seeing an attractive potential mate for the first time, which could be explained by evolutionary pressures our ancestors faced in the past.

“The initial idea for our research came from the popular belief that time seems to slow down or even stop when falling in love at first sight,” Arantes said.

“This can be seen depicted in films such as the Tim Burton movie `Big Fish` and in Taylor Swift`s song Time Slows Down Whenever You`re Around,” Arantes said.

“We know from previous research that perceived time can slow down in real-life situations that are threatening, such as car crashes, bungee jumping, or to take a less extreme example that`s been studied in the laboratory, viewing photos of snakes,” Arantes said.

“These changes in time perception, which can be subtle, are mediated by changes in arousal, and have evolved because they increased the likelihood of survival.

“From an evolutionary perspective, it makes sense that similar changes in time perception would occur in situations related to reproductive fitness, such as unexpectedly seeing an attractive potential mate for the first time.

“Of course, this is consistent with the saying about: love at first sight. But when we looked in the scientific literature we found there had been no prior research.

“In our first study, which was recently published in the journal Evolutionary Psychology, female participants viewed photos of attractive and unattractive males and females that were briefly presented on a computer and had to estimate their duration by pressing a mouse button.

“We found that the estimated durations of attractive males were longer than for unattractive males, whereas there was no difference in the estimated durations of attractive and unattractive females.

“This result supported our prediction that the timing system is sensitive to reproductive fitness,” Arantes said.

Arantes will follow up the initial findings and systematically study the role of time perception in interpersonal attraction.

She will use laboratory and realistic methods to explore what happens automatically and instinctively in the cognitive system during interpersonal attraction.
