How to Do a Wheelie, Really!

If you’ve watched MotorTrend’s Fastest Cars in the Dirty South, you know you’re going to see a lot of street cars do wheelies in every episode. As we’ve said before, everybody loves a good wheelie. If you agree with that, you might want to know why they happen, or even how to make one happen in your own car. It’s not quite as simple as adding some power and letting it eat. There’s physics involved, but fortunately it’s not beyond your capability.

Eric Malone is the unofficial leader of Team 256, which calls Muscle Shoals, Alabama, its home. Team grudge racing is sweeping the country and consists of small local groups of racers facing off with other teams in other locales. These races are conducted with homebuilt race cars—many of them only a few minor tweaks away from being back on the street.

Eric and Team 256 have gone up through the ranks, starting off with slower cars and working their way up to more sophisticated cars over the years. Eric knows a thing or two about winning races, doing wheelies, and how to avoid them, so we thought he was the perfect guy to ask about everything wheelie related. Here’s what he told us:

Johnny Hunkins: What was your first wheelie like?

Eric Malone: My first wheelie was at night. And the thing about at night when you do a wheelie, when you’re sitting there looking straight ahead behind the wheel, you’re hearing the motor sittin’ there runnin’, and you let go of the trans brake, it goes from seeing light to black dark, and it’s like cutting the light off and you’re twelve o’clock. It’s a scary feelin’, you know, I mean it goes from seeing everything to you don’t see nothin’.

My first wheelie wasn’t really a big wheelie. When we first started we had some old G-bodies. And them G-bodies did that G-body shuffle. They would twist up where it would pull the driver front wheel nearly knee-high, and I loved it, ’cause to me, that said a whole lot. At this time there wasn’t none of us really fast, but to see a car yank the front wheel off the ground, you knew it was a pretty fast car. I loved it.

JH: How would you recommend setting up a street car to do a wheelie?

If I was going to set up a street car to do a wheelie, I would want, if any way possible, as much front-end travel as you can get, I want the shock to be as loose as it can get, and if any way possible, I would want to put weight in the trunk. And when you do that, all that weight percentage for most cars is heavier on the front end than it is in the rear, and when you change that weight and put it in the rear and you’ve got a lot of travel on it, this thing will just slingshot up in the air. That would be the way that I would make a street car do a wheelie.

JH: How fast does a car need to be to start doing wheelies?

Well, I would say you would have to have a mid- to a low-8-second car in the eighth-mile to actually start to get it to do any kind of wheelie. There’s a lot of variables that go along with that, like if you got a whole lot of gear in the car. It’s all in the weight percentage. If you can get weight on the back wheels, the most weight you can get behind the rear axle, the less power it’s gonna take for you to do a wheelie. You might not have enough power to go fast, but it will have enough power to make this thing stand in the air.

JH: What’s the worst thing you or one of your guys did when they were in a wheelie?

One thing that a teammate has done on a wheelie, which is one of my guys right now, is actually wreck his car. He jumped his car up in the air so high that it got up on the bumper, and at one time, all four wheels was off the ground. So when he got up on the bumper, he tweaked it in the air and when it came down instead of it being aimed straight down the track, it was aimed to the wall and he wrecked it.

JH: Most racers don’t like wheelies. That said, how do you set up a car so it likes to wheelie?

If I was going to set up a car to do wheelies, the first thing I would do is mount the engine as high up in the car as I can get it, and as far back as I can get it towards the firewall. This car will wheelie.

See all 11 photos See all 11 photos Malone’s recommendation for doing wheelies? Get a Mustang.

JH: What are your favorite cars for popping wheelies?

In my kind of racing, none of us really wants to wheelie because when we’re wheelie-ing we’ll lose the race. But the car that’s known to wheelie probably more than any car is a Mustang. Mustangs—they’re real short—they work extremely well. They hook real hard. And if you get to making a lot of power, Mustangs will get up in the air probably before any other car. I would say—before all the good suspension parts—G-bodies come up next. A G-body, if it does nothing else, will yank the driver front wheel out and tote it.

With my car right now, we just went turbo. This car makes extreme horsepower. If this car ever leaves with the front wheels up, you’re going to pedal it to get it down. My boost is on a timer—and as soon as that boost starts climbing back up, you’ve created a spring, just like a basketball. Once this thing goes down, the springs are automatically trying to push it back up, so if you hit the gas, your next wheelie will be higher than the wheelie you let off of. This is a mistake that a lot of people make, they go out there and their car do a big wheelie and they let out of it when it comes down and they stab it back. Well, when they stab it back, not only do you got the energy from the engine making so much power, but you got the energy now from this thing bouncing back up like a basketball. So it comes up twice as fast, and most times the second wheelie is the one that gets you wrecked. That second one will normally be so high that you’re out of control. If you’ve got into a wheelie and had to lift, you’ve already lost the race.

Recipe for a Wheelie

Short Wheelbase

Start out with a car that has a short wheelbase, like a Mustang, late-model Malibu, or a Gremlin that will be able to shift more of its weight to the rear tires. Longer cars launch flatter because less weight sits on the rear tires for the traction you’ll need.

Favorable Weight Distribution

This will consist of relocating weight that’s on the front axle to over and behind the rear axle. Relocating the battery to the back of the trunk and changing out the steel hood, fenders, and front bumper to lighter fiberglass pieces helps.

Adjustable Travel Limiters

The amount of up and down motion the front end is allowed can greatly affect weight transfer to the rear. More grip and downforce happens when frontend travel is high. Likewise, when wheelies get out of hand, frontend suspension limiters can help settle the front.

Adjustable Shock Absorbers

You’ll need to tune the compression and rebound characteristics of the front suspension, which can easily be done with double-adjustable dampers.

Driving

It will take practice and a certain boldness of character, but doing a wheelie is something to approach with care if you want to do it often. Start small, work your way up, and resist the urge to lift hard the first time it goes up.

Spool Rearend

A spool rearend locks both rear tires in sync. When the front goes up, the car will still go straight as long as there is no difference in speed between the tires—which a spool provides.

Low Gearing

Unless you have scads of power, you’ll want a numerically high gear ratio to multiply torque to levels that get you enough leverage to climb the ring gear for a wheelie. A four-series gear will be best for a street-sized tire diameter.

Engine Placement

Like the man says, relocate your engine as high up and as far to the firewall as you can. This moves the center of gravity over the rear tires when you accelerate.

Motorcycle wheelie

In vehicle acrobatics, a wheelie, or wheelstand,[1] is a vehicle maneuver in which the front wheel or wheels come off the ground due to sufficient torque being applied to the rear wheel or wheels,[2] or rider motion relative to the vehicle. Wheelies are usually associated with bicycles and motorcycles, but can be done with other vehicles such as cars, especially in drag racing and tractor pulling.

History [ edit ]

The first wheelie was performed by trick bicyclist Daniel J. Canary in 1890, shortly after modern bicycles became popular.[3][4] Writing in 2009, Mike Seate related to the U.S Army motorized cavalry training in 1943, pictured in Life magazine. Seate described “vaulting trenches and beach obstacles” and interpreted this technique as “High speed wheelies, naturally”.[5] Daredevil Evel Knievel performed motorcycle acrobatics including wheelies in his shows. Doug “The Wheelie King” Domokos has accomplished such feats as a 145-mile (233 km) wheelie.[6]

Types [ edit ]

Types of wheelie can be divided into two broad categories:

1. wheelies in which the vehicle power is sufficient by itself, as described in the Physics section below. These include: Clutch wheelies : performed by revving the engine with the clutch disengaged, and then abruptly engaging (a.k.a. ‘dumping’) the clutch.

: performed by revving the engine with the clutch disengaged, and then abruptly engaging (a.k.a. ‘dumping’) the clutch. Power wheelies or roll-on wheelies: performed by simply opening the throttle. If the engine has sufficient power, it will be able to lift the front wheel.

2. wheelies performed with the aid of suspension dynamics or rider motion. These include: Bounce wheelies or slap wheelies : performed by opening and closing the throttle in time with suspension rebounding, tire rebounding, rider motion, or any combination of the three.

or : performed by opening and closing the throttle in time with suspension rebounding, tire rebounding, rider motion, or any combination of the three. Manuals: performed without applying torque to the rear wheel at all, but instead by moving the rider’s body backwards relative to the bike, and then pulling back on the handlebars near the end of available travel.

Bicycles [ edit ]

Wheelies are a common stunt in artistic cycling and freestyle BMX. The bike is balanced by the rider’s weight and sometimes use of the rear brake. A style of bicycle, the wheelie bike, has a seating position, and thus center of mass, nearly over the rear wheel that facilitates performing wheelies. The longest bicycle wheelie in one hour is 30.95 km (19.23 miles), and was achieved by Manuel Scheidegger (Switzerland) in Bern, Switzerland on 12 September 2020.

Motorcycle [ edit ]

wheelie In india

A wheelie is also a common motorcycle stunt. The principles is the same as the bicycle wheelie, but the throttle and rear brakes are used to control the wheelie while a rider uses body weight and the steering to control the direction the inertia of the spinning front wheel acting as a balance.[7]

The world’s fastest motorcycle wheelie record is 307.86 km/h (191.30 mph) by Patrik Fürstenhoff. April 18, 1999.[8] The world record for the fast wheelie over 1 km (0.6 mi) is 343.388 km/h (213.371 mph),[9] set by Egbert van Popta at Elvington airfield in Yorkshire, England.[10]

In some countries, such as the United Kingdom and USA,[11] motorcyclists performing a wheelie on a public road may be prosecuted for dangerous driving,[12][13] an offense which can carry a large fine and a ban of a year or more.[14]

In Pakistan, India, and some other countries, it is illegal to perform these kinds of stunts. If someone is caught performing these acts, the rider can have their motorcycle impounded and potentially face jail time.[15]

Automobiles [ edit ]

Wheelies are common in auto- or motorcycle drag racing, where they represent torque wasted lifting the front end, rather than moving the vehicle forward. They also usually result in raising the center of mass, which limits the maximum acceleration. In the absence of wheelie bars, this effect is quantified in the physics section below. If wheelie bars are present then a wheelie results in a reduction of load on the rear driving wheels, along with a corresponding reduction in friction.

Monster trucks [ edit ]

Grave Digger stuck on a set of crushed cars after performing a wheelie.

Monster trucks often perform wheelies during shows. Monster trucks have performed power wheelies, slap wheelies, and sky wheelies. To perform a sky wheelie, a monster truck jumps in such a way that the truck is vertical in the air, with the front end of the truck pointing upwards.

Snowmobiles [ edit ]

Wheelies are possible with some snowmobiles, whereby it is the skis that are lifted off the ground.

Wheelchairs [ edit ]

Some wheelchair users can learn to balance their chair on its rear wheels and do a wheelie. This enables them to climb and descend curbs and maneuver over small obstacles.[16] Occasionally wheelchair dancers perform wheelies.

Aircraft [ edit ]

In an airplane, a wheelie is performed by conducting a soft-field landing or take-off procedure. The pilot increases the elevator backpressure so the nose wheel of the landing gear has minimal contact with the ground.

On 14 February 2020, the Guinness World Record for the longest-distance wheelie in an airplane was set in a Cessna 172 at Southern California Logistics Airport in Victorville, California on its runway 17. The pilot kept the plane’s nose wheelie from touching the asphalt surface for a distance of 14,319 feet.[17][18][19]

Wheelie bars [ edit ]

Wheelie bars help prevent a vehicle’s front end from raising too high or flipping over. Wheelie bars are required for some tractor and truck pull events.[20][21] Wham-O developed and sold an add-on wheelie bar for wheelie bikes.

Dougie’s Wheelie [ edit ]

On September 25, 2016, British trials motorcyclist Dougie Lampkin successfully wheelied around the Isle of Man TT course.[22] He completed the challenge in one hour and 35 minutes, after the attempt was postponed 24 hours because of strong winds.

Physics [ edit ]

A wheelie is imminent when the acceleration is sufficient to reduce the load borne by the front axle to zero.[23] The conditions for this can be calculated with the so-called “weight transfer equation”:

Δ W e i g h t f r o n t = a h w m {\displaystyle \Delta Weight_{front}=a{\frac {h}{w}}m}

where Δ W e i g h t f r o n t {\displaystyle \Delta Weight_{front}} is the change in load borne by the front wheels, a {\displaystyle a} is the longitudinal acceleration, h {\displaystyle h} is the center of mass height, w {\displaystyle w} is the wheelbase, and m {\displaystyle m} is the total vehicle mass.[24][25]

An equivalent expression, which does not require knowing the load borne by the front wheels nor the total vehicle mass, is for the minimum longitudinal acceleration required for a wheelie:

a m i n = g b h {\displaystyle a_{min}=g{\frac {b}{h}}}

where g {\displaystyle g} is the acceleration due to gravity, b {\displaystyle b} is the horizontal distance from the rear axle to the center of mass, and h {\displaystyle h} is the vertical distance from the ground to the center of mass.[26] Thus the minimum acceleration required is directly proportional to how far forward the center of mass is located and inversely proportional to how high it is located.

Since mechanical power can be defined as force times velocity, in one dimension, and force is equivalent to mass times acceleration, then the minimum power required for a wheelie can be expressed as the product of mass, velocity, and the minimum acceleration required for a wheelie:

P m i n = m v a m i n {\displaystyle P_{min}=mva_{min}}

Thus the minimum power required is directly proportional to the mass of the vehicle and to its velocity. The slower a vehicle is moving, the less power is required to perform a wheelie, and that is without even considering the power required to overcome air drag, which increases with the cube of velocity. Therefore, the least amount of power required is when the vehicle begins accelerating from rest.

In the case of tractor and truck pulling, the force to the pull the load is applied above the ground, and so it also acts to lift the front wheels and thus reduces the forward acceleration necessary to lift the front wheels.

The total power P {\displaystyle P} required during a wheel, neglecting air drag can be shown to be:

P T = m [ a x v x + ( x 2 cos ⁡ θ − y 1 sin ⁡ θ + k 2 ) α ω ] {\displaystyle P_{T}=m[a_{x}v_{x}+(x_{2}\cos \theta -y_{1}\sin \theta +k^{2})\alpha \omega ]}

where m {\displaystyle m} is vehicle with mass, k {\displaystyle k} is the vehicle radius of gyration, x 2 {\displaystyle x_{2}} and y 1 {\displaystyle y_{1}} are distance from rear wheel contact patch to center of mass, a x {\displaystyle a_{x}} is horizontal acceleration, v x {\displaystyle v_{x}} is horizontal velocity, θ {\displaystyle \theta } is angle of vehicle from horizontal, ω {\displaystyle \omega } is angular velocity of vehicle rotation, and α {\displaystyle \alpha } is angular acceleration of vehicle rotation. This can be separated into components necessary only for horizontal acceleration

P H = m a x v x {\displaystyle P_{H}=ma_{x}v_{x}}

and components necessary only for raising and rotating the vehicle

P R = m ( x 2 cos ⁡ θ − y 1 sin ⁡ θ + k 2 ) α ω {\displaystyle P_{R}=m(x_{2}\cos \theta -y_{1}\sin \theta +k^{2})\alpha \omega }

A factor M can be calculated as the ratio of the power required to raise and rotate the vehicle and the power required only for horizontal acceleration.[27]

M = P R P H = ( x 2 cos ⁡ θ − y 1 sin ⁡ θ + k 2 ) α ω a x v x {\displaystyle M_{}={\frac {P_{R}}{P_{H}}}={\frac {(x_{2}\cos \theta -y_{1}\sin \theta +k^{2})\alpha \omega }{a_{x}v_{x}}}}

5 best wheelie cars in Forza Horizon 5

Wheelies are a mechanism that is most prevalent in motorcycles. Fortunately, with the help of certain mods in Forza Horizon 5, some cars can also perform wheelies. It is not a very practical approach for mods, but it can be fun for enthusiasts.

The game comes with a ton of customization options. Out of those, some specific modifications are necessary to perform wheelies. However, it has to be noted that only a handful of cars would perform them. Players will need to try and test different vehicles and get used to their mechanics before performing such customizations.

To perform wheelies on a car, a player needs to upgrade two essential things in a vehicle: horsepower and equipping the car with a heavier rear frame.

Best cars to perform wheelies in Forza Horizon 5

Wheelies are not easy to perform, especially in cars. There are a lot of factors that need to be taken into consideration, like weight reduction, proper tire width, rims, installing the proper engine, alignment, and more.
