Do throttle body spacers actually do anything?
The throttle body spacer permits more air than usual to go into the engine. Thus, the engine does not have to work as hard in order to get the correct amount of air into the combustion chamber. One of the main benefits of a throttle body spacer is an increase in horsepower.
Do throttle body spacers need a tune?
Throttle body spacers do not affect overall performance or delivery of air / fuel. Since these spacers have little bearing on performance, a tune is not required after installation.
How thick should a throttle body spacer be?
A throttle body spacer is usually a 1-inch (25 mm) thick piece of metal that is bolted to the outlet of the throttle body of an automotive engine upstream of air flow into the manifold.
Do throttle body spacers change sound?
Next, be aware that some spacers cause a whistling noise. It can sound similar to a small turbo. Some people like this and some don’t. Other spacers are designed to be quiet.
Can you use a throttle body spacer with a cold air intake?
Expert Reply: The Airaid PowerAid Custom Throttle Body Spacer # AR450-638 that you referenced should work just fine with the cold air intake system you have installed on your 2011 Ford Mustang. It will add about an inch to your intake track length which your cold air kit shouldn’t have a problem accommodating.
How do I increase my throttle response?
One of the easiest ways to improve engine and throttle response is by making sure your fuel filter is clean. When you stomp on the gas pedal, it sends a signal for more fuel to go into the engine.
Do throttle body spacers increase gas mileage?
Perfomance enhancement products, such as a throttle body spacer, air intake and exhaust are targeted toward performance vehicle applications where increased horsepower and torque is preferred. They will improve the performance of an engine which can help and hurt fuel economy.

And since the engine is basically a large air pump, increasing the air intake level will increase the engine’s power output as well, in some cases by up to 15 to 25 hp.
Is a ported throttle body worth it?
Yup, throttle response alone is worth it. Most people claim a few horsepower gain, but you’ll realistically never feel it, even with a finely-tuned butt dyno. The ported throttle body reduces the time between your foot rolling into the throttle and the engine actually going, noticeably so.
Do throttle controllers really work?
Do throttle controllers really work? Yes, a throttle controller works to remove throttle lag and works great! An electronic throttle control changes how your car’s engine control unit (ECU) reads input from your gas pedal and the rate at which that throttle input is applied to the engine.
Does a throttle body need a gasket?
The throttle body gasket is gasket made of paper or aluminum that is sandwiched between the throttle body and the intake manifold. Its purpose is to provide an air tight seal between these components so that incoming air can not bypass the throttle body. This gasket is often replaced during a throttle body service.
What is a ported throttle body?
A ported throttle body is intended to optimize air flow and promote air velocity which will provide benefits on any engine, but if the throttle body is too small, it will still be a choke point.

Throttle body spacer
Automotive technology
A throttle body spacer is usually a 1-inch (25 mm) thick piece of metal that is bolted to the outlet of the throttle body of an automotive engine upstream of air flow into the manifold. By changing the airflow, this after-market add-on claims to be a performance enhancing accessory that can increase an engine’s horse power, torque and fuel economy. It functions by swirling or directing the air flow to maximize air volume to the manifold. There is much debate about the veracity of the manufacturers’ claims for these devices. The general consensus is that it works well on some engine configurations, and not at all or adversely on others. In 2009 the BBK Performance R&D Department performed extensive dyno testing of off the shelf throttle body spacers from other manufacturers. The intention was to determine whether or not throttle body spacers were a viable product that BBK could manufacture that would provide notable results for their customers. The tests were performed on Ford 4.6L 3-V, GM LS, and Mopar HEMI V8 applications using a Dynojet 248C dynamometer. The tests consisted of a baseline dyno run, cool down period, and a repeat test after the spacers were installed. None of the spacers produced any additional horsepower or torque when tested. The only notable change was a loss of 4 horsepower to the tires on the Mopar application with the spacer installed. An additional test was run after removing the spacer, resulting in a return of the lost horsepower. Proving that some spacers can actually rob power from an engine. After seeing the results, it was clear that throttle body spacers were simply gimmicks and provided no real performance value. BBK scrapped all plans to manufacture throttle body spacers.
What is a throttle body spacer?
What is a throttle body spacer?
Definition & Description
A Throttle Body Spacer is an easy way to increase Horsepower, Torque, and fuel economy. The spacer installs between the throttle body and intake manifold. It is typically about 1 in. thick and made from aluminum or nylon. It can also be smooth on the inside or have ridges.
How do I choose the right one?
Smooth bore throttle body spacers are used with Throttle Body Injection. These spacers improve high-rpm power by increasing the volume of the intake plenum. They work based on the same principle as Carburetor Spacer.
Ridged bore throttle body spacers are used with Multi-Port Injection. These spacers improve throttle response, low to mid-range power, and fuel economy. They accomplish this by speeding up and spinning the air as it enters the engine.
Why would I NOT want one?
First, make sure there is clearance for the throttle body with the spacer. If it causes interference issues, you will need to do some extra work. Also check to make sure any wires or linkages have enough slack.
Next, be aware that some spacers cause a whistling noise. It can sound similar to a small turbo. Some people like this and some don’t. Other spacers are designed to be quiet. If it makes a noise, it will be noted in the product description.
Finally, there is some controversy around throttle body spacers. A common argument is “If the OEM could increase power so easily, then why don’t they come pre-installed?” The answer is that OEMs care about more than just performance. Engines must meet strict noise standards. They also need to balance power through the entire rpm range.
A throttle body spacer will change the effective rpm range of the engine. You may notice a drop in power at high or low rpm. However, most people see noticeable gains after installation.

DIY Throttle Body Spacer
So you need two things to make one. A plastic cutting board and a TBI base gasket. I got my cutting board from RiteAid locally, it was a nearby store and it was exactly 1/2 inch thick. It cost 10 bucks.
Start by laying the gasket on the cutting board and drawing out the pattern on the board. Drill holes in the mounting bolt holes and some starter holes in the other areas. Use a dremel or a grinder with a deburring bit so it doesn’t clog up. I couldn’t find my dremel so I used an air grinder with a deburring bit.
One thing to note. You don’t have to cut all the holes out. Some of them are much larger than are actually needed. They are used for vacuum passages and as long as they are big enough to let the vacuum source through they don’t need a huge hole. On the main bore I made sure it was nice and smooth and properly sized to the manifold. The other holes I just shaved the plastic down so the vacuum signal could get through but otherwise didn’t bother cutting it totally out. You can cut them out but it makes it take way longer and you don’t gain anything.
Typical reports are a much better bottom end response and slightly improved mileage. I will find out soon with mine and report back. If I feel like it, I will make a second one and stack them for a one inch spacer. I am not sure what would work best on this setup one inch or a half inch. I might try both ways if I get time and if my mpguino ever comes in. This is an easy mod for most cars. I have been trying to think of stuff I have not done to my car and one thing I came up with was a spacer to put under the TBI. Of course nobody makes anything for a Metro and even if they did it is not worth spending much money on something so easy to make. Spacers can show a couple of mpg improvement on an engine using a carb or TBI injection. On multiport it can be hit or miss whether it works. So you need two things to make one.
