Editing, repairing, and improving audio using Essential Sound panel

Essential Sound is an all-in-one panel that gives you an extensive toolset of mixing techniques and repair options. This feature is useful for your common audio mixing tasks. The panel provides simple controls to unify volume levels, repair sound, improve clarity, and add special effects that help your video projects sound like a professional audio engineer has mixed them. You can save the applied adjustments as presets for reuse, making them handy for more audio refinements.

Premiere Pro allows you to classify your audio clips as Dialogue, Music, SFX, or Ambience. You can also configure and apply presets to a set of clips that belong to the same type or to multiple clips.

Once you assign an audio type, for example Dialogue, for a voice-over clip, the Dialogue tab of the Essential Sound panel presents you several parameter groups. These groups allow you to carry out the common tasks that are associated with dialogue, such as unifying the different recordings to common loudness, reducing background noise, and adding compression and EQ. The audio types in the Essential Sound panel are mutually exclusive, that is, selecting one audio type for a clip reverts the previous changes done on that clip using another audio type.

All the changes that you do using the Essential Sound panel controls are reflected in the more advanced clip settings. For an effect like restoration or clarity, audio effects are inserted into the clip rack. If you are an advanced user, you can start with your primary edits in the Essential Sound panel and then go on with your sophisticated internal effect settings and apply finishing touches.

To launch the Essential Sound panel, choose Window > Essential Sound.

Normalize Audio in Premiere Pro

Perfect Audio Levels Instantly

This tutorial will show you how to get perfect audio levels for all your audio clips using Premiere Pro. Whether you need to adjust one clip or multiple clips, I’ll show you how.

Setting Up Timeline

Similar clips should be placed on the same tracks: ex. Music on Audio 1, Verbal on Audio 2, etc. Give descriptive names to each track. Increase track height. Double-click on track and then after it opens, hover the mouse pointer over the line at the bottom of the track in the track header, wait for it to turn to double arrows, click and drag down. If it is not visible already, open Audio Meter (Windows > Audio Meter).

Viewing Levels On Audio Clips

If the clip peaks above 0 on the Audio Meter a red light goes on, indicating that the volume is too high. This is called clipping.

To determine where the audio peaks, right-click on the Audio Meter, choose Static Peaks. With Static Peaks active, it will show exactly where the audio is the highest.

Note: Optimal peak level is -3.

Normalizing Using Audio Gain On A Single Clip

Select the clip that you want to normalize. Right-click > Audio Gain

In Audio Gain Window select Normalize max peak to. max peak to -3.

Set Click OK. Notice adjustment in the entire waveform for that clip.

Normalizing Using Audio Gain On Multiple Clips

Select the clips that you want to normalize. Either by holding down Shift and clicking on each clip, or clicking in the area next to the first clip and then dragging across all the clips that you want to select, releasing on the last clip. Right-click > Audio Gain In Audio Gain Window select Normalize all peaks to.

Set max peak to -3. Click OK. Notice adjustment to all the waveforms in all the clips.

Clean Up Dialogue

After you adjust the dialogue’s volume, you might also hear more of the ambient noise or background noise in the background. This is where we can use the Essential Sound Panel’s repair tab to remove that unwanted noise. So let’s go back to the Essential Sound Panel.

Underneath the button “Auto Match”, you’ll find the Repair Noise section. Here you can use the Reduce Noise slider to reduce the background noise. If you slide to a dramatic level 5+, you will hear that the frequencies in the voice become distorted. This happens because some of the same frequencies from the background noise are also in the voice. This is why I suggest using a maximum of 1-2 when using the Reduce Noise slider. However, using 1-2 will only remove so much noise and you might still hear some unwanted background noise. This is where some noise repair plugins will come in handy. I personally use noise clean up and repair plugin called Accusonus ERA Bundle to improve my voice. The noise reduction technology is far more powerful than the built in Reduce Noise sliders in the Essential Sound Panel. If you’d like to learn how it works, you can watch the tutorial here to see how it works.

There are some more Clarity controls that can improve the sound of your voice, such as Dynamics, EQ, and Enhance voice. These controls will work differently for each voice type you work with. If you’d like to learn how I use these controls in action, you can watch here.
