A strainer to sift the matcha, in my case, I use a tea strainer. I think a mesh wire tea ball would work as well. You could also use a small wire strainer used for sifting flour or sprinkling icing sugar/powdered sugar on cakes. Sifting is optional, but recommended.
How do you Stir matcha powder?
Carefully pour hot water in the bowl with matcha powder. Using a bamboo whisk (holding it vertically from the top) stir a few times to make sure all the matcha clumps are off the bottom and side of the bowl. Then whisk very briskly back and forth in a straight line for about 20-30 seconds.

For the longest time, I was making my matcha in just a regular soup bowl with vertical walls and you can, too! You will want a soup bowl that would be a similar shape to a chawan because you’ll need room for whisking to get a decent froth and not damage the prongs on your whisk.

The tea turns out as frothy—maybe more so—as when you whisk it with a bamboo chasen. Zach Mangan, of Kettl tea, taught us all about the more formal way to make matcha, but he also shared this clever hack. Simply put the tea powder and hot water in a thermos, seal tightly, and shake hard. That’s it!

How to Make Matcha Without a Whisk
You bought or were gifted a tin of matcha and now you’re not sure what to do with it. You’ve seen pictures and videos online of matcha with a bamboo whisk and think you need one of those to make it properly. That must be the only way if you keep seeing this whisk everywhere, right? Think again. To enjoy matcha the traditional way, a bamboo whisk (also known as a chasen) is required. But, the traditional method is not the only way to make it as a hot tea. Therefore, if you don’t have a whisk, don’t fret and don’t just leave that matcha to get stale! You can use other items that are probably already in your home to make yourself some matcha.
I’ve talked about all of the traditional matcha tools before and the modern tools that can go in their place. Check out that blog post here to learn more.
However, when preparing matcha, you don’t really need any or all of those tools if you’re not in a traditional setting.
Why Do You Need To “Whisk” Matcha?
Matcha is green tea in powder form, therefore, you can not steep it like any other tea. However, you should not confuse it with instant tea.
Matcha technically doesn’t dissolve in water. Whisking matcha helps the powder suspend in water.
If you’re not whisking matcha, then you have to find a different way to suspend the powder and make sure the hot tea isn’t chalky and clumpy. Put down the fork and spoon though…please.
These alternative methods to make matcha are great for people who are:
new to matcha and not sure where to begin or just want to try it
always on the go and need to get their matcha fix quick
rather spend their budget on great quality matcha and not all the tools (yet)
No Whisk? No Problem!
Here are 3 quick ways to make matcha without a whisk:
A traditional bamboo whisk will give you the smoothest bowl of matcha (provided you have good quality), but the below options make this powerful green tea more accessible.
1. Use a mason jar/bottle (and your muscles)
This is the most common way I make my matcha when I’m on the go or just don’t have a whisk on hand.
All you need are a jar or bottle, matcha, water and a little bit of muscles! Put all the items in the bottle, seal, and SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE (until you get a nice layer of froth on the top)!
I do this more for cold brew matcha, however you can definitely prepare hot matcha with this shake method, too.
If you can, I recommend sifting your matcha into the bottle before shaking as that will really help you get rid of clumps. You can also find shaker bottles that were specifically designed to make matcha for sale.
2. Use a blender
Matcha smoothies are delicious and usually require adding the green tea powder to a blender with other ingredients.
However, you can forgo the rest of the ingredients and just add (hot or cold) water and matcha and blend away! This is a super quick (no muscles required) way of making a cup of matcha.
How long to blend really depends on your blender’s power. Your matcha will be ready once you notice a froth on the top surface and no clumps floating around.
3. Use a milk frother
If I’m making a tea latte I’m always busting out my milk frother. However, a milk frother can also be used to make a cup of matcha.
If you have a handheld frother (like myself), just add your water and matcha to a drinking vessel and insert your handheld frother.
Unlike a blender, a handheld frother is easy to travel with so you can make matcha outside of your home, too!
If you have an electric milk frother, you can simply add the matcha and water directly to it and turn it on as you normally would to froth milk then pour into your cup and enjoy.
So, now that you know of 3 other ways to prepare matcha, you can pick up some high quality green tea powder and use one of the above methods to enjoy your green tea! Remember: no whisk, no problem!
How to Make a Matcha Latte Without a Whisk
You can substitute water for milk in the above 3 no-whisk methods if you’d like to make a matcha latte instead!

3 Ways to Make Matcha Without a Whisk
Green Tea, Tea Culture | 6.23.2020 | By S. Tasaki 3 Ways to Make Matcha Without a Whisk
Matcha green tea is a powerhouse of antioxidants. Made from stone-ground first pick tea buds of the Spring season, matcha green tea comes in a powder form and can’t be steeped like other loose tea.
Whisking using a bamboo chasen is recommended for the preparation of matcha. Whisking the matcha ensures that the powder will dissolve in the water, giving you a smooth matcha experience full of flavor. However, if you do not own a chasen whisk, there are still some quick and alternative methods to preparing a delicious matcha drink.
Matcha Otome 抹茶乙女 $24.99 + Add to cart BUY IT ON Matcha Otome is a ceremonial grade green tea powder that has a fresh aroma and rich, savory notes of sweet grass with slight astringency. From the prestigious Uji region in Kyoto, this matcha is excellent as is or in drinks such as matcha lattes, smoothies and cocktails.
Below are the three quick methods to make matcha without a whisk.
1. Shake with a mason jar, shaker, or bottle
Using a mason jar, shaker, or bottle is the most common way to make matcha when you don’t have a whisk. All you need is the container, matcha, water or milk, and some muscle. Place all the things in the bottle or jar, seal the lid tightly. Then shake until you see a decent layer of foam form at the top. This option is best for cold brew matcha so add some ice and enjoy. Of course, you can certainly prepare hot matcha using this shake method. If you are able to, sifting your matcha into the jar/bottle before shaking will truly aid in removing clumps.
2. Use a Blender
There’s no doubt that matcha smoothies are tasty and you can just simply add the green tea powder to the blender with your other ingredients. But, you can also just add matcha and water and blend away! This is a very quick way that requires no muscles to make a cup of matcha. If you’re wondering how long you should blend, then it entirely depends on the power of your blender. Your matcha will be ready once you see foam on the top surface with no clumps floating around.
3. Use a milk frother
Yes, you heard right – you can use a milk frother to mix your matcha powder. If you are using a handheld frother, then all you need to do is to add matcha and water to a cup and then insert your frother. Compared to a blender, a handheld frother is convenient to travel with and it means that you can make a cup of matcha green tea even outside of your home. If you are using an electric milk frother, then you can water and matcha directly to it and switch it on as you normally do to froth milk. Finally, pour the final drink into your cup to enjoy.
Pick up some high-quality matcha powder today and use any of the above-mentioned hacks to enjoy your matcha!
For an authentic matcha experience, you may want to look into a ceremonial matcha starter kit, which comes complete with all the tools you need.
