What Moves God?

What Moves God?

From the archives of Oral Roberts

What moves God to action? Contrary to what many people think, it isn’t our prayers. Prayer moves you and prayer moves me, but it is faith that moves God.

Prayer gets us into faith. Once I prayed in the Prayer Tower for seven hours before I felt faith being released out of my heart. Sometimes I can pray for just a few seconds and feel that faith is coming forth. It’s not a matter of how long or how short we pray, but that we pray until we experience faith moving in us and out of us toward God.

Prayer aims our faith. Paul taught that in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God (Philippians 4:6). You might say, “Doesn’t God already know my needs?” Yes, He does. Matthew 6:8 says that God knows our needs before we even ask Him. If He knows our needs, then why do we need to make our requests known to Him? So we can aim our faith precisely at our needs.

Jesus once asked a blind man, “What do you want Me to do for you?” (Mark 10:51 NKJV). Jesus and everyone else around could see that the man, Bartimaeus, was blind, yet Jesus asked, “What do you want Me to do for you?” He asked the question so Bartimaeus would focus his faith precisely on what he wanted from the Lord. Bartimaeus replied, “[Lord], that I may receive my sight.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.”And immediately he received his sight (vv.51–52).

What do you desire of the Lord? Pray until you feel faith rising up in you. Pray specifically and aim your faith precisely, because it is your faith that moves God.

How do we give God control? It’s a challenge many Christians face in their spiritual walk. Are you a Type-A Personality? I am. It’s a gift and a challenge all in one. If you’re unsure of what a Type-A Personality is, I love Wikipedia’s definition: Ambitious, rigidly organized, highly status conscious, sensitive, truthful, impatient, always try to help others, take on more than they can handle, want other people to get to the point, proactive, and obsessed with time management. People with Type A personalities are often high-achieving “workaholics” who multi-task, push themselves with deadlines, and hate both delays and ambivalence. Sounds kind of good, right? The problem is, following God can be a challenge if you have this kind of personality. Thankfully God knows your heart and your weaknesses as much as your strengths! He wants you to trust Him! Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. HOW DO WE GIVE GOD CONTROL?

It seems like a silly question, doesn’t it? Because when it comes down to it, God IS in control of everything. BUT we often try to assert our own control and defy or disobey Him. Here are some ways to relinquish that control and enrich your relationship with God.

TALK TO HIM.

God wants to spend time with you. Spend time talking to Him. Talk openly and freely about everything. Let Him know that you’re struggling to let go of control and invite Him to help you.

READ THE BIBLE.

When you read scripture, you get to know God. It only makes sense that the more you know someone, the more you learn their character. It’s easier to trust God when we know Him!

LISTEN TO HIM.

The Lord speaks to us. However, it’s important that we listen to what he has to say. God has been giving me some REALLY loud messages lately. Here is one such example of Him speaking so clearly to me about the topic of control….

I went to the bookstore with a previously used gift card. I was certain the balance remaining on the gift card was somewhere around $17. There I stood in the Christian section of the store. I recently read Not a Fan by Kyle Idleman, I was working on the Beth Moore prayer devotional, Whispers of Hope, but I wanted another book that would encourage growth in my Christian walk.

So I stood there with two books in my hands. I read both of the book jackets and felt torn as to which one to choose. I debated and deliberated. Then I felt a sudden strong urge to buy one.

I went to the till to purchase the book. The cashier rang it through… $17.31.

Then she scanned my gift card.

I literally saw her jaw drop.

The amount on the gift card was EXACTLY $17.31. She was floored and said she has never seen that happen before… EVER!

I knew in that moment I had selected the right book. I knew that God wanted me to read that book and He was making it clear to me that I made the right choice.

The book is entitled Let. It. Go. by Karen Ehman.

It is about “how to stop running the show (letting go of control) and start walking in faith”.

Remember how a couple months ago I declared that I’m All In with God? I’m still struggling with handing everything over to Him. There are still bits and pieces that I want to control.

In the first chapter of this book, you are required to take a test about control. I was so unhappy with my results that I wanted to take the test again. That in itself tells me that I need to read this book!

THANK HIM.

The Lord is so good. Even if you struggle with control, approach God with a thankful heart.

Show gratitude for all He’s done for you.

It’s easier to release control when you’re thankful for what someone has done for you. Even if it’s the small things that you wouldn’t be able to control… thank Him. For example, you can thank Him for the rainy day because that means you get to stay inside and read instead of doing the gardening.

DO YOU STRUGGLE TO GIVE GOD CONTROL?

God loves you and He wants to help you! Through scripture, prayer, a listening ear, and a thankful heart, you can have victory over your need to control. As you hand more over to Him, you will find peace and clarity on God’s will for your life. He promises it!

Pastor: Faith moves God’s hand

Rev. J. Patrick Street

Pastor’s Column

Walking with the Lord, step-by-step, a question has come to mind: What moves God to action? Contrary to what most people think, it isn’t prayer. Prayer is not to instruct God, or inform God, or impress God. Prayer moves you and me — it is faith that moves God’s hand.

The value of prayer is two-fold. First, prayer activates your faith. Prayer isn’t based on how long or how short you pray, but that your prayer is faith-based. Faith says, “I believe!” and “I receive!”

There is a small block of wood on my wife’s desk, it reads: “Faith is not believing that God can … it is knowing that He will!” I like that reminder that when I pray I must activate my faith believing God can, knowing He will hear my prayer and answer.

Second, prayer aims your faith. Paul taught the Philippian Church, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God” (Philippians 4:6). Now, you ask, “Doesn’t God already know my need?” The answer is: Yes He does. In Matthew 6, Jesus said “your Father knows what you need before you ask Him” (vs. 8). Then, why I do need to make my requests known to Him? A very simple answer: So that you will aim your faith specifically at your need. Remember this: Need does not move the hand of God … Faith moves the hand of God!

Jesus asked a blind man a specific question: “What do you want me to do for you?” Now, Jesus could see that this man named Bartimaeus was blind. Bartimaeus knew he was blind. It was obvious to everybody that the man was blind. Yet, Jesus asked, “What do you want me to do for you?” Why did He ask that question? The Lord asked so Bartimaeus would aim his faith specifically and precisely on what he wanted from Him. He said, “Rabbi, I want to see” (Mark 10:51).

Now Bartimaeus didn’t say, “Just bless me” or “If it be Your will, I want to be touched by You, Lord.” No, Bartimaeus was specific, he aimed his faith: “Rabbi, I want to see!”

What lies ahead? We can’t see all the blessings and we can’t see all the bumps-in-the-road, but we can see, with clarity, we can pray with active faith and aimed faith that will move God’s hand on our behalf.
