Why can I hear my own mic?
Some headsets deliberately send some of the user’s voice back to the headset in order to help users know how loud they will sound to others. Depending on your Internet connection and the programs you are using, there may be a slight delay between your speaking and the sound being played back.
What is direct monitoring Blue Yeti?
Direct monitoring allows you to listen to the input signal of the interface with near-zero latency. It takes the input signal on the interface and sends it straight to the headphone and line outputs on the device. The signal is still sent to your DAW software allowing the input to be recorded at the same time.

How to Stop Hearing Yourself on Mic on Windows 11 & 10
How-To How to Stop Hearing Yourself on Mic on Windows 11 & 10 By
If you hear yourself when you use your mic on Windows, you probably have microphone monitoring switched on. Here’s how to stop it.
As the rise of apps like Zoom has shown, it’s important to have access to a good quality microphone on a Windows PC. You might need it for work, but it’s also a good idea to keep your mic ready for emergencies.
What do you do if your microphone isn’t working properly, however? If you keep hearing yourself on your microphone, it could mean your mic isn’t set up properly.
This should be an easy fix, so if you want to know how to stop hearing yourself on Windows 11 and Windows 10, follow the steps below.
Why Do I Hear Myself Using My Mic on Windows?
If you’re able to hear yourself on your mic while you’re using a Windows PC, it’s a sign that your sound settings aren’t configured correctly.
This is usually because you’ve enabled microphone monitoring on your device. This is a feature that loops your mic input straight to your speakers or headphones, allowing you to see how you sound.
You might also have another mic activated at the same time—your internal mic on a laptop and your standalone mic, for instance. It might also occur if your mic is boosted and the settings aren’t correct.
Less rarely, it could point to a hardware fault. If you’re worried about this, try your mic (if possible) on another device to see if the issue repeats itself.
How to Stop Hearing Yourself on a Mic on Windows 11
If you’re running Windows 11, you should be able to stop hearing yourself on your microphone by disabling microphone monitoring.
For most users, this will stop the mic input from being repeated back to your speakers or headphones.
To stop hearing yourself on a mic on Windows 11:
Open the Start menu and select Settings.
In Settings, press System > Sound. Select More sound settings.
In the Sound window, press Recording and select your mic. Press Properties.
In the Listen tab, uncheck the Listen to this device checkbox. Click OK to save your changes.
How to Stop Hearing Yourself on a Mic on Windows 10
If you’re running Windows 10, you can also disable microphone monitoring for your mic. However, due to the changes between Windows 11 and Windows 10, the steps are slightly different.
To stop hearing yourself on a mic on Windows 10:
Right-click the Start menu and select Settings.
In Settings, press System > Sound. Click Sound Control Panel.
In the Sound window, select the Recording tab. Choose your microphone and press Properties.
In the Microphone properties window, select Listen. Uncheck the Listen to this device checkbox. Press OK to save.
Configuring Your Microphone on Windows
The steps above should allow you to quickly configure your microphone so you don’t hear yourself through it on a Windows PC.
Still having mic problems? If you’re on Windows 10, don’t forget to boost your microphone levels. Windows 11 users can test their microphone out and double-check it isn’t a hardware problem.
Want to start recording? You can always use Slack to record audio and video clips to share with colleagues.
How to stop hearing yourself with the Blue Yeti X Microphone
A while ago I bought a Blue Yeti X as a replacement for my old Yeti. The new X had a super annoying habit: without drivers, I would hear myself through the headphones I use, which are connected directly to the Yeti X’s output. Super annoying, and of course the documentation consists of a comic book card without words or reasonable explanations. I suppose it’s designed to aid users with noise cancelling headphones who are otherwise prone to shouting.
Today I did some digging and finally worked out how to disable this feature. Without the need for any drivers, we need to long-press the front volume button until the display turns pink. If it turns a different colour, long press it again until the pink LEDs come up. It’s apparently a monitor mix-in option.
This is divided into two sections: left for the mic, and right for the headphones. Presumably it mixes the mic with what you’re hearing in the output. The default is at 50% (the top), and by turning the knob now you’ll be able to adjust the mix-in level. Turn the knob all the way to the left to add more mic in your monitor mix (not what we want), or all the way to the right to hear less mic mixed in.
To disable this altogether, turn the knob all the way to the right, or add as little as you want into your monitor mix.

My Blue Yeti is picking up all sounds and playing them through my headphones (Hyper X Cloud)
Hi all, I can’t seem to seperate my Blue Yeti and Headset – the Yeti captures everything and plays it back through the headphones – keyboard sounds, drinking coffee (I drink quietly, not like a thisrty hippo, too!!!), etc.
So when I try and use it for streaming with OBS. the mic registers there but no sound comes through the mic channel, and everything comes through the desktop sounds channel instead.
In windows 10, I have the headset set as my default output device and the microphone as my default input – still doesn’t work.
Help please!
