Backward compatibility of Revit with earlier releases of the software
Causes: Revit is not designed with a feature to save to older version data formats or work with the newer RVT file format in older Revit version.
Solution:
The term backward compatibility involves two distinct features:
Open older files: The ability of new versions to open and work with data written by older versions. Open newer files: The ability to save to an older version data format from a newer version of the software.
Open Older Files
When opening a file, Revit will automatically upgrade older version data to the current version.
In the image below, a Revit 2018 model is being upgraded in Revit 2019.
Open Newer Files
When opening a Revit model, template or family that was saved in a later version, the following error message appears:
Revit
The file (Filename).rvt was saved in a later version of Revit and cannot be retrieved in this version.
Save as older version
For information on why there is not an option to save to a prior version, see Sasha’s post from the following Revit Idea thread: Save as previous version
Alternative Workflows
Check the following methods to avoid this limitation:
Install and Use the Newer Version:
Subscribers to the Revit product receive access to the current version plus five prior versions.
All versions can be installed on a system at the same time to allow working with whichever version is needed. For more details on this, see How to work with multiple versions of Revit installed on one system
Export to IFC/DWG:
Open the RVT/RFA file in the newer version of Revit. Export to an IFC (only available for RVT files) or DWG . This export process converts the geometry in the file into a format which can be imported into the earlier version. Open/Import the IFC or DWG into the older version of Revit.
Notes:
Plan views exported to DWG contain 2D geometry only.
While the IFC Export/Import feature is not designed for this workflow (specifically round-tripping IFC files: Exporting to IFC and importing the IFC back into Revit), the IFC format may provide better fidelity of geometry when exporting and then importing into an older version.
This workflow still requires access to the newer version of Revit to open/export.
When applying this workflow in a Cloud Worksharing project, consider the IFC related limitations as described in the article: Linked IFC file is not visible in the Revit model in the BIM 360 viewer.
View Only Access:
To review the contents of the Revit file, upload the file to the Autodesk Viewer.
BIM 360 Document Management is another option.
Note: A separate subscription is required to work with the BIM 360 service.
REVIT: Is Revit backwards compatible yet?
Revit is not backwards compatible nor is there any rumors or talks of making it backwards compatible. If you absolutely need your Revit file to be saved and opened in a lower version you can export your project as an IFC.
Disclaimer: There might be some data loss and other objects and elements missing from the project. this is not a guarantee and should not be used as a working method but merely an option if you accidentally save your project in the newest version. Read the Autodesk TS Sharing a Revit File with a Previous Release.
Once you open your IFC in your lower version of Revit you must look through the project for anything missing or items that were deleted or not transferred.
Some issues I noticed when testing this;
Autodesk Knowledge Network
Open a Revit file to work on a model or family.
Important: Revit models are not backwards-compatible. When you create or modify a model using the current release of the software, you cannot open the model later using a previous release.
To open a Revit file, use any of the following methods:
Press CTRL+O .
. On the Home page, under Models or Families, click Open, or click a thumbnail image in the Recent Files list.
Click File tab (Open).
(Open). Click File tab (Open), and select a file type.
(Open), and select a file type. Click File tab, and select a file from the Recent Documents list.
