How do you paint bright light?
When depicting white objects in a painting, there are two strategies you can use:
Tint the white with the color temperature of the light source
If you know how light sources affect the temperature of the colors on the objects, you will understand how to mix the right whites for your paintings. Where I live, the light from northern exposures is always cool and therefore the color temperature is cooler.
So, for example, if you are painting a bowl of eggs over a white drape in the light of a north-facing window, the colors would appear cool. Hence you would tint the white with cool blue, green, and cool yellow. If you were painting a bright pink flower under the same light conditions, you would tint the white color with a touch of cool red, such as alizarin crimson.
If, on the other hand, you shine warm light on your bowl of eggs, then they would take on a warm tone. In this case—you guessed it— tint the white with warm colors to reflect the nature of the light source.
Contrast warm and cool whites
In the above examples we spoke only of a single tone to the light (either warm or cool). But once you know what to look for, you will see that white objects can reflect the bright light in both cool and warm tones. In a painting depicting sunny days, for example, you are likely to see both temperatures at play. To illustrate this, take a look at the painting “The Two Sisters” by Joaquin Sorolla, a Spanish impressionist painter.
In this painting, notice how both warm whites and cool whites are used in various spots even though the light source itself is warm. The sea in the background is a very cool white because it reflects the blue sky. In contrast, the dress of the older girl is painted with warm whites.
Up close, you would even see variation within these warm whites in the girl’s dress. The lower portion of her dress takes an orange cast from from the sunlight reflecting off the beach.
Her shoulders are painted with whites tinted with warm yellow. As the brightest spot on her, the shoulders emphasize the warmth of the sunlight. They contrast with the near orange skin of her face and the cool band of blue behind her to form a strong focal point for the painting.
Here is another painting by Sorolla to reinforce the idea of using contrasting warm and cool whites to create an interesting color scheme.
In the painting titled “The Pink Robe. After the Bath.”, the sun is at its highest point of the day…you can feel the heat of the sun on the lady in pink dress.
Sorolla painted warm orange whites on her neck, arm, and hands. This is contrasted by the bluish whites on the white clothes worn by the second lady.
Note that there is also a brilliant yellow white on the white robed lady’s hair.
Like the “The Two Sisters”, the warm and cool whites in “The Pink Robe” are placed side by side to enhance the visual interest. Imagine if all the whites you used were tinted with the same colors; the colors would not draw your eyes in the same way.
Also notice that the shadows on the white objects are not always grayed or tinted using the same color. There are variations of warm and cool colors in the shadows as well, just slightly darker than the colorful whites in the light. The use of these colorful whites creates a very engaging visual path that leads your eyes throughout the painting.
So you can bring brilliant light into your paintings by knowing the above simple principles.
Keep in mind that value harmony should always precede the color choice.
Exercise restraint to keep from using too much white; this will keep your paintings from becoming too chalky or simply overwhelmed with a starchy, lifeless white.

It’s perfectly acceptable to add more white tint to white undercoat or primer for example to get better coverage.
A bright glossy white finish naturally looks ‘whiter’ than a matt finish, shiny surfaces reflect light, duller surfaces absorb light.
Check out the lighting! White light gives a colder sharper feel as well as brightens.
Have a strong contrast right next to your whites! Something inky, moody, dramatic will make that white shimmer!
As an artisan painter we pride ourselves in getting that white just right! RAL 9016 Traffic White is a favorite of mine – a bright white it has black and yellow pigment in it too.
Another firm favourite RAL 9010 Pure White has black, yellow and a dash of magenta.

The trick to painting light on a bright day
Painting bright, natural light throws up its own unique problems and solutions. There are some key ideas to get a handle on, but the main ones are the relationship between light and shadow, as well as how light reacts to different surfaces and colours.

A bright, sunny day means that the light is going to be very intense. The intensity of this light will be in relation to the intensity of the shadow. In other words, the stronger the light the darker the shadow. The opposite is also useful for painting light in overcast scenes. As such, the dimmer the light, the closer the shadows will be to the value of the light.
Another thing I like to keep in mind is when light hits a surface it’ll either bounce off it or become absorbed. Keep in mind two things: the type of surface and the colour of the surface.
A smooth surface, such as a mirror, will bounce light at the same angle the light is coming from. A bumpy surface – say, stone – will bounce light all over the place irregularly as the light hits the uneven, pitted surface.
As with surfaces and the relationship between light and shadow, there’s a simple rule of thumb to remember when painting light hitting a coloured surface.
Essentially, when dealing with painting light on a coloured surface keep in mind that if a warm light hits a warm surface, it’ll make that surface look more saturated, whereas if a warm light hits a cool surface, the light will be neutralised and vice versa.
Painting light, especially natural light on a bright sunny day, can seem daunting at first, but by remembering the keys rules I’ve outlined here you should experience no major problems. Have fun!
01. All seeing sun
The sun is so large that its rays can cover the Earth and not change direction. On a sunny day, if you’re outside and the sun is your main light source, the direction of the light can be represented by sets of parallel lines.
The light travels in a uniform direction and its path is predictable. I always like to keep a layer with these lines as a reminder of the direction of the light.
02. All in the bounce
Here, using the parallel lines, I give light to this white ball. If you follow the direction of the rays of light (represented by arrows), you’ll notice where the bounce light is affecting the ball.
Both the shadow and reflected light in shadow are affected by the blue in the background, in a similar manner to how the blue of the sky reflects in shadows and bounced light.
03. Make your mark
Early in my paintings I like to create layers with arrows representing the direction of the light. They help me visualise where the light and shadows will be.
For example, here I find where the doorway casts its shadow by adding an arrow with the direction of the light, and following it from the top of the doorway to the point it meets the woman.
04. Harsh or soft?
Here’s a detail of the painting. The arrows help me find where the light would hit the top of her cowl and skirt.
Both my light and my surfaces are warm and uneven, so I know it would be a great moment for a soft, diffused light bounce that adds visual interest. Following the arrows enables me keep the lighting in these areas of the painting consistent and realistic.
05. Artist’s secret
Be consistent if your goal is to paint sunny light, make sure the relationship between light and shadow are consistent throughout your painting. This means no areas that are bright and sunny, while others that are crazily diffused, like an overcast day!
