They come in hundreds of color options so you can get the exact color you’re looking for. Also, each bo usually less than $1.00 each which makes them an inexpensive option for art projects.

Acrylic Paint is a fast-drying paint made that is made of synthetic pigments suspended in acrylic polymer emulsion. Washable acrylic paints are usually used for arts and crafts projects and are more expensive than the acrylic latex paint you might use on your walls or furniture (Check out my post on the Best Paint for Furniture).

The fabric medium also makes the painted surface softer and less abrasive, making it more comfortable for the wearer. But more importantly, the fabric medium prevents cracking, which makes the acrylic paint stay on fabric.

The first step is picking your fabric pattern. You can use just about any fabric with acrylic paint and fabric medium but you want to pick something fairly durable so it holds up to washing. I like to use upholstery fabrics and you can find small amounts for paint projects like this in the fabric links in the supply list above. Sometimes fabric stores will have bins of materials that are samples. Depending on your project size, you might be able to score some really nice upholstery fabric this way.

IMPORTANT: Before you paint your fabric, be sure to wash and dry it so it does any shrinking BEFORE you paint it. If it shrinks after being painted, the painted area could come out distorted. Ask me how I know!

I found fabric with butterflies already in the pattern of the fabric and just painted the butterflies. The fabric is called Barber Bird Village Blue Natural and you can find it here. You can easily do the same with floral fabrics where you just paint an individual flower and frame the fabric piece around that flower. Another option is to get a stencil and stencil a butterfly over a floral pattern with a chalk pencil. You can see lots of stencil options here: Flower & Butterfly Stencils

Step 2: Cut Your Fabric Before Painting

Once you have picked your paint color and fabric, it’s time to cut your fabric to size. Cut it just larger than the frame edge or matte of the frame (if you use a matte as I did). You don’t have to cut it straight but just make sure it’s bigger than the matte or frame edge.

IMPORTANT: If you use old picture frames, now is the time to spray paint them as the drying time is 24 hours. You can see my best spray painting tips here.

Step 3: Mix the Acrylic Paint Fabric Medium Mixture

I like to use a one-to-one ratio of acrylic paint to fabric medium although the instructions say to mix two parts paint to one part medium. Combine both and mix them well. Sometimes the consistency of acrylic paint can be too thick, so if you have trouble brushing the paint mixture on the fabric, you can add a little bit of water.

TIP: I like to use condiment cups (see the current price here) for mixing paint because they are disposable and you can see if your paint is mixed well. They also have lids so you can store any extra paint that wasn’t used.

Originally, I listed a different fabric medium as you see in the picture above. It is really hard to find so I switched to the Delta Fabric Medium which I like even more.

Step 4: How to Apply Acrylic Paint on Fabric

IMPORTANT: Before you start painting on the surface of the fabric, be sure to put something under your fabric because there’s a good chance the paint will soak through. Freezer paper isn’t always waterproof so I prefer foil or a piece of cardboard wrapped in plastic wrap for any kind of acrylic painting.

After experimenting with how to paint on fabric permanently, I’ve found it’s best to paint a thin border the first time. Using a small brush, I like to outline the edges of my butterflies. I’d do the same if I was using a stencil.

Once the edges are outlined, I fill in with a larger brush so the first coat of paint goes a little faster. Sometimes darker shades or brighter colors need two coats of paint but make sure they are thin coats.

For thin details or smaller designs, it is easier to use fabric markers instead of a thin brush.

Let the let paint dry overnight and don’t be tempted to dry acrylic paint with a fan. Instead, it will settle out more smoothly if you let it dry on its own.

Step 5: How to Seal Acrylic Paint on Fabric

After the second coat has dried for 24 hours, it’s now time to iron over your painted fabric to seal in the dried paint. Put your iron on low to medium heat and iron over the painted areas, keeping your iron moving so you don’t burn the fabric.

By applying heat to the painted fabric, you are allowing the paint to completely cure into the fabric fibers making it more durable and waterproof.

TIP: To give extra protection to your painted fabric, you can lay a thin piece of fabric between your iron and the painted fabric if you feel more comfortable.

How to Heat Seal Fabric Paint

There are a few different ways to heat seal fabric paint that I wanted you to be aware of. Once you heat-set the painted fabric, it’s there forever!

Iron – This is the easiest by far as long as you make sure your iron isn’t too hot. Simply iron over the painted area just like you’d iron any other piece of fabric Oven – You can place your fabric in the oven for a few minutes as long as you don’t set your oven temperature over 250 degrees. For obvious reasons, I don’t recommend this method! Dryer – The biggest difference with the dryer method is that it takes longer but it is super easy. Just place the fabric in the dryer on medium-high heat for 40-50 minutes. If you have very delicate fabrics, you might want to stick with the ironing method.

How to Seal Acrylic Paint on Fabric Without Medium

If for some reason you don’t want to use an additive to your paint, the methods below will help you seal acrylic paint on fabric without medium. They will still help the paint to cure faster but the medium gives it more durability for long-term wear.

Step 6: The Final Step to Apply Acrylic Paint on Fabric

Ironing also serves the purpose of making your fabric straight and stiff so it’s easy to frame. Simply place your fabric into the frame. You can add some scotch tape to the edges if you are concerned it won’t stay in place against the matte.

I love the way my framed fabric turned out! This was such an easy, low-cost painting project and you can make artwork in any style or color scheme.

How to Make Fabric PaintS Last Longer ON CLothes & Crafts – Painted Fabric Care:

Even though this process will give you a beautiful and durable home décor or craft project, extra care should always be taken when washing and drying painted fabric. Use the cold gentle (or handwash) cycle on your washing machine. And if you don’t have to put it in the dryer, don’t. Just air dry and then go over it with a low iron if needed.

TIP: Even if you don’t plan on ever putting your fabric in the dryer, be sure to wash and dry the unpainted fabric before you start your project. This is because even if you have it dry-cleaned fabrics can shrink and you don’t want your painted fabric to look distorted because of shrinking.

How to Make Acrylic Paint on Fabric Permanent – FAQ’s:

Can you use acrylic paint on clothes?

Because the combination makes such a versatile medium, you can use this method to get the same soft feel on clothes whether you are working with natural fibers or synthetic fabric. When washing clothes without a tight weave (like denim) it’s a good idea to use a lower washer and dryer setting.

What is the best acrylic paint for fabric?

My two favorite kinds of acrylic paint are Apple Barrel and Delta. Both are made by the same manufacturer, Plaid. Since Apple Barrel is usually cheaper, I’d opt for them. However, a good reason to use Delta acrylic paint is their product selection. Delta comes in a lot of cool sheens and different shades that Apple Barrel doesn’t include glitter paints, pearls, and metallics:

Can I Use Acrylic Paint on Fabric? Is Acrylic Paint Washable?

A reader asked, “Is Apple Barrel paint washable?” On its own, acrylic paint is washable and can be used on fabric. It will stain clothes even if left on them for a few seconds. The reason you want to mix a fabric medium with acrylic paint is so that the paint does crack, peel or chip over time. Also, without fabric medium, the acrylic paint makes clothing stiff and uncomfortable.

Can you use acrylic paint on fabric shoes?

You can use acrylic paint on any fabric shoes to make acrylic paint designs – whether it’s shoes, uggs, aprons, wall hangings, curtains, etc. The options are endless with this fabric painting technique!

Is there a fabric medium for latex paint?

You can mix latex wall paint and fabric medium to paint fabric. On smaller projects like an apron, wall art, or even a pattern on curtains, I would use the Delta fabric medium I listed above.

If you paint on fabric without using a fabric medium, you can still seal your fabric using the above method with the iron on a low heat setting.

How to Paint on Fabric without Bleeding

Bleeding paint is a problem with fabric-specific paints when either the paint is too thin. Fortunately, if you are using acrylic paint and fabric medium, you won’t run into this problem. Both acrylic paint and acrylic fabric medium have a thick consistency that will prevent bleeding.

How to Turn Acrylic Paint Into Fabric Paint Without Medium

Does acrylic paint work on fabric without medium? There’s no way to turn acrylic paint into fabric paint without a textile medium. If you are painting on fabric with washable acrylic paint alone, it will eventually crack and peel because the medium is needed to make it more flexible.

How to Make Fabric Dye with Acrylic Paint

If you want to dye fabric, one of the easiest ways is with acrylic paint and fabric medium as opposed to more expensive enamel fabric paints. This method of coloring fabric doesn’t work well to achieve dark colors but is great for watercolor-like effects and tie-die. Simply mix 1 part acrylic paint, 1 part fabric medium, and 7 parts water. Add extra water if you want a more washed-out look. Let the paint soak into the fabric for two hours in the acrylic paint wash, wring out any excess water and hang the wet fabric up to dry. Use rubber bands for a tie-dye effect. Use can also you this same mixture in a spray bottle to create a sprayed-on effect that will give you better results than fabric dyes.

You can use acrylic paint on fabric before it is dry-cleaned. In fact, the painted fabric will hold up better than being washed on cold in the gentle cycle and air-dried.

Paint on fabric permanently by mixing a fabric medium with acrylic paint. Acrylic paint is fast drying and waterproof but can crack or peel if used on its own. Adding a fabric medium gives the paint flexibility to move with the garment, thus ensuring a permanent finish.

What’s the Difference Between Fabric Paint, Dye, and Ink?

There are several ways to change the color of the fabric. You can use dye, ink, or paint. Each option works slightly differently and can create a variety of finishes. From an all-over color to small sections here and there, the result you want will determine whether you need to choose paint, dye, or ink. Let’s take a look at how each method works.

Fabric Dyes

When you first think of permanently changing the color of your fabric, you probably think of dye. A dye is used to change the color of an entire garment. So if you’re looking at turning your blue top purple, this is the one to use. One thing to remember with dye, it’s only the color that changes. The texture of the garment will remain the same.

Dye is applied through the water. The item is dipped into the dye and water solution, usually in a big pot or you can also use a washing machine. Color seeps into the fabric and spreads through the fibers, covering all of them in a liberal dose of the dye.

For a tie-dye effect, garments can be twisted into knots or coated with wax before being dunked into the dye. If the dye can’t reach some areas, it doesn’t soak in evenly, creating beautiful abstract effects.

Ink

Better known for being used on paper, ink creates a permanent color change in small areas. It tends to be thinner than fabric paint and adheres to fabric in a slightly different way. Ink seeps into fabric fibers to create a thin, almost watery paint effect.

It can be added by using pens or brushes and gives a more subtle color than either paint or dye. There are two types of ink, alcohol-based and acrylic. The first can soak into the fibers of a garment. Acrylic-based will only seep a little and mainly sits on top of the fibers.

One of the main drawbacks with ink, particularly when it’s alcohol-based, is it can bleed. If you’ve ever had a ball-point pen leak inside your shirt pocket, you’ll know this from experience. To stop the ink from bleeding out of your design area, you need to use a barrier or a border to keep it in one place.

Fabric Paint

Similar to ink, fabric paint is an acrylic-based paint used to create small designs. These can be as intricate as a bunch of roses or simple splashes creating an abstract artwork. It can be applied by brush and works in the same way as an artist painting on canvas.

The paint seeps into the fibers contained in the fabric, creating a bond. This bond is permanent and gives a vibrant color that is washable, flexible, and long-lasting.

Unlike ink and dye, fabric paint doesn’t bleed or spread throughout the garment. It’s essentially the same acrylic paint used by artists to create still-life paintings or portraits. The only difference is fabric paint has a special additive included. It contains a fabric medium to allow flexibility of movement.

What Kind of Paint to Use on Fabric?

As with any surface, the best paint to use is the one designed for the purpose. When it comes to fabric, you should use fabric paint. It can be used to permanently color anything made from material, whether it is made from a natural or synthetic fiber.

Paint designed for fabric has been specifically formulated to withstand everything you put your clothing through. Or your bags and shoes, for that matter. Whatever the item, the paint you choose needs to survive everyday wear and frequent washing. Fabric paint is the only paint durable and flexible enough to keep your designs fresh, vibrant, and attached to your garments.

These paints are made from acrylic paint and mixed with a built-in additive called a fabric medium. It’s this additive that gives the paint the flexibility it needs to move with the fabric. Without it, the paint would be too rigid and peel or crack, causing unsightly damage to your paintwork.

However, if you decide to buy standard acrylic paint, you need to add a textile or fabric medium to it before using it on fabric. Using acrylic paint on its own will make the fabric stiff and inflexible. The paint finish will be too rigid and unable to move with the material.

Acrylic paint can form a durable and lasting bond with the fabric and is unlikely to fade over time. As with most paints, the viscosity or thickness of the paint can be altered. With some paints, this can cause a detrimental outcome to the color or coverage, not so with acrylic paint. How to Paint on Fabric Permanently

Before you start painting your fabric, you’ll need to choose the right paint. The best choice is specific fabric paint. However, you can also buy standard acrylic paint. If you go for acrylic paint, remember to buy a bottle of fabric medium too!

The next thing to consider is the color of the item you want to paint. Fabric paints tend to work better on a lighter base color such as white, cream, or even pale yellow. This doesn’t mean you can’t paint on your purple jacket. Of course, you can, but it might alter the effectiveness of the paint you’ve chosen.

If you want to paint on a darker fabric, choose a more opaque paint. A dark-colored shirt may need more than one coat before the design can stand out against the darkness of the background. With thicker paint, the coverage will be better and the finish smoother.

Step 1

Once you have selected your paint, you need to prep your garment. Make sure to pre-wash it before adding the paint. This will help remove any dirt or chemicals left over from the manufacturing process. Avoid fabric softener when pre-washing. Softeners will add more chemicals that will hinder the adherence of the paint.

Any chemicals on the fabric or grime between the fibers may limit the paint’s ability to stick to the cloth. Therefore, a clean garment is more likely to result in a permanent finish.

Step 2

When your garment is dry, test a small garment sample to see how well the paint adheres to it. Check to see how well the paint covers the fabric. Is it an opaque finish or a bit see-through? Depending on the effect you are looking for, you may need to add another coat of paint or use a thicker one.

Step 3

Give your garment a quick going over with an iron to remove any wrinkles in the area you want to paint. Wrinkles will create crevices the paint can’t reach, which is great if you want a design with gaps. Not so good if you don’t.

Step 4

Paint your garment. If you want a one-sided design, make sure to put some cardboard inside your garment, so the paint doesn’t seep straight through. Then, use a brush and stencil, or paint free-hand as if you were painting on a canvas or paper.

Step 5

Allow your painted garment to dry for at least 24 hours. Then set the paint using heat. You can use a dryer set on a low heat setting, but the best method is an iron. Turn your clothing inside out and iron the garment on the back of the design. The heat will set the paint, giving you a permanent and unique finish.

How to Seal Acrylic Paint on Fabric

The best way to seal acrylic paint onto fabric is to use heat. Using heat will ensure the paint is permanently stuck to the material. This will make the clothing able to withstand the rigors of constant washing and wearing.

Iron is the easiest method of applying heat. You need to make sure the paint is completely dry before getting your iron anywhere near the design. The last thing you need is acrylic paint on your iron! As a rule of thumb, give the garment a minimum of 24 hours after painting. That way, you can be assured the paint will stay on your clothing and not transfer to other surfaces.

You can also use a dryer set to a low setting. Whichever method you use, pay attention to the fabric content of your garment. Some fabrics can react badly to too much heat.

A hot iron can cause scorch marks. Make sure to use a pressing cloth if you are in any doubt about the heat tolerance of your garment. Be careful when using the heat from a dryer too! They have been known to melt some fabrics, particularly ones containing synthetic fibers.

What Type of Fabric Can Be Painted Permanently?

Fabric paint can be applied permanently to any material. However, the quality and longevity of the painted areas can depend on the type of fabric you use them on. Although designed for use on any fabric, there are some fibers that will give a better finish.

The more natural fiber the fabric contains, the more likely the paint will be permanent. Cotton, silk, and wool are an ideal choice for painting. Due to the water absorption qualities of natural fibers, paint seeps into the material, creating a deep, rich color from the surface to the inside of the garment.

Better still, the tighter the weave of the fabric, the more the paint can be absorbed. Heavier weight cotton like denim or tight weaves like twill are the best for painting. Their structure allows more paint to be trapped closer to the garment surface before it soaks through to the underneath.

There are also some synthetic fibers that can be painted. Some polyester or nylon fabrics allow the paint to adhere to the surface. Unlike natural fibers, paint is not absorbed by synthetics. It sits on the surface.

This means you have to consider the fabric finish before beginning to paint it. If the nylon or polyester has been given a special coating or treated with a waterproofing chemical, the paint may not stick to the surface, causing it to flake or peel.

How to Care for Painted Fabric

To ensure your painted garment retains its vibrancy, hand wash in warm water and air dry. This will prevent the paint from being damaged by a washing machine’s vigorous spin cycle.
