Unlike the rest of Call of Duty: World at War, the zombie mode is survival horror. After you’ve played through the single-player game, have waited till the end of its credits, and played a round of it, you’ll be able to do so as many times as you’d like. When things start, you’re armed with a pistol; use this to rack up a few hundred points, then replace it.
By walking up to one of the chalk outlines on the wall, you’ll be able to buy a gun. When the round begins, the closest gun will be affordable, but it is not very useful, and the first wave of zombies is slow. Thus, your pistol is suitable for dispatching them with. Look through the windows, anticipate their paths, and shoot them down with your pistol. Once you have amassed enough points, buy the better of the two available guns (the M1A1 Carbine).
With your more potent gun in hand, go for head shots.
Above all else, your goal is to survive. If you cannot score head shots, do whatever it takes to live for as long as possible. On the other hand, if you can perform them successfully, do so often. You will use considerably less ammo and earn far more points, which are essential, since foes drop neither ammunition nor guns.
If you aren’t in immediate danger, visit the windows whose planks have been torn away and repair them with the Use command.
These wooden boards temporarily deter zombies, and can also serve up audio and visual cues when you’re trying to determine where they’ll enter. While you’re repairing them, hold down the Use function and turn your back to the windows so you can look around freely. If you stare blankly outward while fixing them, you’ll inevitably be bitten in the back.
If a power-up drops, claim it quickly.
These useful items will vanish in thirty seconds if they aren’t picked up. That means you can apply some strategy toward using them, but you can’t dawdle for too long, or your opportunity will be forever lost. There are several kinds, including Double Points, Insta-Kill, Napalm (which kills everything within your immediate vicinity), and Ammo Boxes.

Once you can afford to do so without going broke, open the door and clear the staircase.
Performing these acts will enable you to move more freely and purchase different kinds of items, but the zombies will not stick to infiltrating the ground floor. They will come at you no matter where you are, by any means they can possibly manage, yet opening these passageways is a necessity. The guns you start out with won’t beat back the hordes forever, and you’ll need breathing room every now and then. Give yourself that.
When it comes to picking your weaponry, remember: all-around is best.
Specialized and limited guns, such as the Scoped Kar98k and the Double-Barrel Shotgun, are not as oft useful as fully automatics. There will be times when a Melee Attack will not be enough to save you, and you’ll need to spray some bullets. Conserve your points for those types of guns, and don’t be afraid to experiment.
In Zombie Mode, you’ll die many times, but this mode is never-ending.
Have fun, enjoy its intensity, and laugh at your inevitable dogpile deaths. And when you’re ready for it, bring your friends into it! The multi-player version of Zombie Mode enables you to revive your near-dead teammates and do so much more, although everything you’ll learn from playing it by yourself will still apply. Get some practice in, and then invite your buddies to a good ol’ brain-munching time.

Me and a couple friends recently bought the steam version of WAW and wanted to get into a game of custom zombies however none of us can connect to eachother. When i join my friend’s online lobby in the top right it says “trying to join potential matches” and i get put into a lobby on my own, then after about 30secs it kicks me out and pops up with the message “game session is no longer available.” This is becoming more and more frustrating as none of us have found a fix. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Is port-fowarding neccesary and if so what ports do you need to host a game?
