How to Clean Copper to Remove Tarnish and Restore Shine
You can easily and safely restore dull, tarnished copper surfaces to a shining golden glow. Here’s how to clean copper pans, pots, jewelry, and more using all-natural products you have around the house.
A verdigris patina looks gorgeous on your antique copper weather vane, but when it comes to pots, mugs, and jewelry made of copper, the look of darkened tarnish can be downright unappealing. There are lots of reasons that copper tarnishes: Exposure to air, moisture, dirt, and even the oils on your skin can all react with the copper and cause the surface to oxidize and turn color. Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to clean copper mugs, pots, and even copper jewelry. Try these simple, natural ways to clean copper and restore the glowing, polished surface.

Before You Start Cleaning Copper
Some copper items feature a lacquer finish that you should avoid cleaning with these methods. To find out whether the surface is lacquered, dip a rag in white vinegar, then baking soda, and use it to rub an inconspicuous spot on the copper surface. If it removes a spot of tarnish, the piece isn’t lacquered and you can use the following natural cleaners.
Before cleaning copper, you should also check to see if the item is copper-plated. If the piece you want to clean with one of these methods is copper-plated, you could risk scratching the surface. To test if your item is copper, touch a magnet to its surface. If it sticks, the object is copper-plated. To clean copper-plated items, wash with water and mild detergent. Dry the item and buff with copper polish ($4, Ace Hardware). Rinse and dry.

How to Clean Copper with Salt and Lemon
Wondering how to clean copper pans and pots? This method is super simple.
Step 1: Cut Lemon and Scrub Copper with Salt
Cut a lemon in half and sprinkle coarse kosher salt onto the cut surface. Scrub your copper mug, pot, or pan with the cut side of the lemon to remove tarnish. Add salt to the lemon as needed.
Step 2: Rinse and Dry
Continue cleaning copper with lemon and salt until the tarnish is gone. Rinse the copper piece under running water. Buff the surface with a clean, dry cloth to polish.

How to Clean Copper with Vinegar
As an alternative, look to distilled white vinegar to clean copper pots and pans. First, place the pot or mug in the sink. Pour a little vinegar on the surface or dip a scrubbing sponge into vinegar and squeeze out the excess liquid. Sprinkle the rough side of the sponge with salt and scrub the tarnish off the copper surface. Repeat until the surfaces are clean. Rinse with water and buff with a clean, dry cloth to polish.
How to Clean Copper with Flour
Mix 1/2-cup distilled white vinegar (or lemon juice, which is more acidic) with 1 Tbsp. salt and enough flour to form a thin paste. Apply the paste to the copper surface and scrub away the tarnish with a cloth or scrubbing sponge. Rinse under running water and buff with a dry cloth to polish.

How to Clean Copper Jewelry
If your copper rings, necklaces, and bracelets have been collecting dust and tarnish, it’s easy to restore their shine. Here’s how to clean copper jewelry with natural ingredients. Squeeze enough lemon juice into a bowl to cover the jewelry and add 1 or 2 tsp. salt. Put the copper jewelry into the solution and let it soak for a few minutes. Rinse the jewelry under running water and buff dry to polish.

junkyard dawg:
I use detergent and scrubbing to clean up new parts. My favorite trick is to take a rod of stainless tig filler metal and bend a little hook in it and then cut sppropriate sized pieces of scotchbrite pad to hook in there. I can then chuck this up into a drill and power scrub inside tubes and columns. I do the same with bristle brushes. Works great. Lots of water and lots of attention to detail… after its clean the first time, you can lay off the harsh cleanings. I like to think my column gets seasoned, much like a cast iron pan.
Nice trick. Here is another working “trick”. I took an aluminum cleaning rod from one of my black powder rifles, and cut a brillo pad about 1 inch larger diameter than the column. Then removed the cleaning jag, centered that “patch” on the end of the rod, and screwed the cleaning jag back down tight to hold the patch. Then chucked that rod in a drill, and cleaned away. I too like you, will only clean like this one time, to get the flux, and other nasties out. The hardest part was cleaning between the 2 T’s. There I simply put a brillo on a piece of twine, fished the twine through the T’s, and scrubbed that way. I am sure I did not get everything that time, but got out as much as I could. Final clean up, was taking a cheap mash, and running, and re-running it 3 times, to use hot “pure” ethanol to strip out the remaining “junk”. I do not believe that any “junk” in the take off or reflux lines, needle valves, or any of the joints survived that cleaning.H.
How to Clean Copper Pipe – How To Polish Copper

Key steps
Wash away loose dirt first. Use a commercial metal polish if you have one to hand. If you prefer a homemade solution, mix white vinegar with salt or cream of tartar, then apply it to the pipe. Rinse and dry the pipe completely when you’re done.
Exposed copper pipes can be a gorgeous feature, but they can also end up tarnished or corroded. Here’s the best way to clean copper pipes.
Note: If you’re using any of the below methods for the first time, try them out on an inconspicuous area of the pipe first. If the copper has been sealed, don’t use these methods, as they could strip off the sealant. If the pipe is seriously corroded, or if it’s leaking, contact a plumber rather than trying to clean it.
If you find that the salt and vinegar method is the best way to clean copper pipes for you, but you think your pipes could benefit from longer treatment, add flour to the salt and vinegar mixture to make a paste. You can now apply the paste to your pipe and let it sit for half an hour before cleaning it away.

How to clean a copper pipe
If your piping is looking a little dull, or there are green spots tarnishing the metal, here’s how to polish a copper pipe until it shines.
Use a sponge and warm water to clean away loose dirt. Dry the pipe completely with a cloth.
A metal polish that’s suitable for copper, used according to the instructions, will usually get the best results.
If you don’t have metal polish to hand and you want a home solution, try dissolving a tablespoon of salt in a cup of white vinegar. Use a soft cloth to rub the salt-and-vinegar mixture onto the pipe. It’ll create a chemical reaction that will usually remove the tarnish from copper within seconds.
Rinse the pipe thoroughly with a sponge. If you’ve used vinegar and you don’t wash it off completely, the pipe will turn green.
Buff and dry the pipe with a clean cloth.
Sometimes, after a polish, copper pipe can still look a bit tarnished or uneven. If so, you can use fine wire wool to scrub away remaining tarnish and to even out the surface. Wash and dry the pipe again afterwards.

Descaling copper pipes: dealing with mineral deposits
Limescale build-up isn’t usually a problem inside copper pipes; it tends to affect steel pipes. If you do have limescale problems inside your pipes, it might be worth looking into installing a water softening system.
However, you might find unsightly mineral deposits on the outside of your copper pipes. Learning how to clean copper pipes with encrusted limescale is easy: you can even use ordinary ingredients you might have around the house.
Again, wash the pipe with a sponge dipped in warm water before you begin. There’s no point in applying a cleaner to mineral deposits that are already loose.
Make a paste of two parts cream of tartar and one part white vinegar. If you prefer, you can replace the vinegar with lemon juice.
Apply this acidic paste to some kitchen roll or a stiff brush and use it to scrub away the alkaline deposits on your copper pipe.
Once you’re done descaling the copper pipes, rinse and dry them off thoroughly.
