How many rakaats of nafl can a person pray with one salam?

Q: Is there a limit of how many rakaats of nafl a person can pray with one salam example is it permissible to pray 12 rakaats of nafl with one salam?

A: For nafl salaah at night, the maximum with one salaam is eight rakaats and for during the day it is four rakaats.

( وتكره الزيادة على أربع في نفل النهار وعلى ثمان ليلا بتسليمة ) لأنه لم يرد

قال الشامي في رد المحتار : قوله ( لأنه لم يرد ) أي لم يرد عنه أنه زاد على ذلك والأصل فيه التوقيف كما في فتح القدير أي فما لم يوقف على دليل المشروعية لا يحل فعله بل يكره أي اتفاقا كما في منية المصلي أي من أئمتنا الثلاثة نعم وقع الاختلاف بين المشايخ المتأخرين في الزيادة على الثمانية ليلا فقال بعضهم لا يكره وإليه ذهب شمس الأئمة السرخسي وصححه في الخلاصة وصحح في البدائع الكراهة قال وعليه عامة المشايخ وتمامه في الحلية والبحر (رد المحتار 2/ 15-16)

Performing 4 supererogatory Rakahs with one Salaam

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

In principle supererogatory prayers should be performed in twos. The Prophet said: ” The prayer (voluntary prayer) of the night and day is in twos. ” [Ibn Maajah, At-Tirmithi, An-Nasaa’ee and Abu Daawood]. Nevertheless, it is permissible for a person to perform four Rak’as with one Salaam.

‘Aasim Ibn Dhamrah , said: ‘ I asked ‘Ali Ibn Abu Taalib about the supererogatory prayers of the Prophet during the day before the obligatory ones, and he replied: “Who can do what he did?” And then he informed us saying: ”The Prophet used to perform two Raka’hs when the sun reaches its meridian, and four Raka’hs before midday, with one salaam at the end .’ [An-Nasaa’ee, and Al-Albaani classified it as authentic]

The scholars stated that the narration reported by Ibn ‘Umar is about the superiority [that it is better to pray in twos], and the narration reported by ‘Ali is about the permissibility [of doing i.e. performing four Raka’hs with one Salaam].

The best way to perform nafl * prayers is to perform them in two rakats and it is performed like the last sunnah of noon prayer (dhuhr). however, nafl prayers can also be performed in four rakats. if performed in four raka’ats, then it should be performed like sunnah of afternoon prayer (asr). when in qa’da (sitting) of the second rakat. 3. asalaam u alaikum. nafl prayer is prayed just like fardh prayers in 2’s or 4’s. the only difference is in your intention at the start. you make intention of praying nafl namaaz. you don’t need to pray anything extra. if you are praying 4 rakaats nafl together then you will need to pray a surat in each 4 of the rakaats unlike 4 fardh where.
