Oiling System Priming Instructions
It is critical that the oiling system be primed before the first start-up. Priming fills the internal oil passages so that all moving parts have oil, once the engine is started. Engine oil lubricates and cools moving parts of the engine.
**Failing to prime the system will result in excess heat, wear, and damage to the engine.**
Procedure
Fill the oil pan with a quality Break-In Oil. Prime the system by turning the oil pump with a power drill and Priming Tool, or with an external Engine Preluber. Rotate the crankshaft by hand, while priming the system. This ensures that oil gets around all the bearings and into all the internal oil passages.

A need to prime oil in an engine that’s been sitting?
I have disassembled more junkyard engines than I care to recall, and they all have oil in the bearings.
Taking the plugs out and spinning it to move oil is kinda pointless as you still would have motion without oil pressure. The only benefit is not having the resistance of compression, but see above… there is oil there anyway.
The real reason for priming an engine that has been sitting was a bit misguided. The main thing that needs oil is anything with direct metal to metal friction contact; i.e. flat-tappet cam lifters/followers. You can prime the engine for an hour and not get any oil on the cam and lifters, so priming is not really doing you any good anyway.
Not to mention, there aren’t that many cars without roller lifters these days.
Long story short; priming will ensure that the oil pump works. I have started a few and watched as the oil pressure didn’t rise, and that is where the damage happens. It doesn’t take long running an engine without oil to do some catastrophic mayhem.
So on an engine with a crank-driven pump, I just make sure to dump oil where I can (under valve covers, etc) and be careful watching the pressure gauge. If it doesn’t snap to life in about 3 seconds, I shut down and pray I didn’t destroy anything.
So priming an engine is more diagnostic than anything. Priming it is not necessary for the engine health. But priming doesn’t typically get oil on anything that is direct sliding metal-metal, like non-roller cam components which are the important ones.
I went crazy with a 350 chevy and pulled the pushrods so I could squirt oil down on the cam lobes as best I could. The result was three wiped lobes instead of all of them.
Just fire it up.

There are several options depending on how bad you figure the engine is.
First you might hand turn the engine a rev or two to see if it feels tight, If it feels like any normal engine you should pop the spark plugs (this will also make it crank faster).
The normal recommendation is to put a couple table spoons of light weight oil in each cylinder, let it set for a while so it will creep into the gap between the piston rings and cylinder wall. The problem with the subaru is that laying on its side it is very tough to get oil on the upper face of the cylinder. A light spray oil like WD40 will help with that a bit as it will fog the cylinder a bit, but WD40 is not really a lubricant.
At this point you can pull the crank sensor or in some other way prevent the engine starting and crank it until you see oil pressure.
If your really anal about protecting the engine you can jury rig up a means to pressurize the oil system.
The thing I would worry about on first start would be that the turbo gets re-primed with pressurized oil before the engine actually lights off and spins up the turbo.
There are allen plugs at the back of the cylinder heads that go into the head oil galleys that oil the cams, you can hijack the oil pressure sensor fitting, and you can of course pull the oil filter and install one of those oil cooler sandwich adapters and use those line fittings that normally go to an oil cooler to pump some oil into the block with an external pump.
Cheap fuel pumps or 12v water pumps intended for RV’s could probably be setup to pump oil into the system. Just dig through your junk box and see what you have.
In a worst case situation, you could take a piece of 2″ plumbing pipe, put a fitting on the bottom end and pipe cap on the top, install a metal tire valve stem in the pipe cap and then fill it with a quart of oil and than take an air compressor to blow the oil into one of the oil fittings ( where the oil pressor sensor sits etc.)
That would force prime the oil galleries.
