What I like the most about Golconda Fort is the view you get from the top. You can see the entire city. I loved that…it was cool day…the breeze and the view made it perfect for me. It would have been better if tourists are allowed in night too…the view in night would be even better I am sure. Actually golkonda fort timings are only till 5.30 pm thats why I had to come down early. openness of the fort is also quite likeable.

Golconda Fort is an important part of Hyderabad History . I went to visit this fort on a weekend. Weekends seems usually crowded so if you can visit during the week. But the visit was worth. I reached the fort by afternoon itself as I knew that timings of golconda fort are from 9 am to 5.30 pm so wanted more time to explore the place. although it was sunny, I saw every part of the fort. It is captivating!

” Don’t go in summer! ” – Sindhu

4 stars Rating:stars

No doubt this fort is beyond comparison. I loved the architecture, its vastness..it even has a temple inside it! But it requires a lot of walking. if you really want to see the place you should climb upstairs and see. In summer that is not a good idea and as the Golconda fort timing for entry are only till 5.30 pm you cannot even go in evening. I would suggest you to go after the month of april and may. If visiting during summer, plan for an early morning visit only, afternoon you can’t bear that much heat.

Golconda Fort was built about 400 years back, I visited with my family. I wanted my kids to see the grand monument from past and understand its value. After seeing it I can confidently say it is one of the most beautiful buildings of the city…In-fact in entire India. You can visit this place on all days of the week but the entry timings are from 9 to 5.30 only. Golconda fort entry fee is minimal so don’t worry about it. But yes, you need to pay extra if you are carrying a camera inside which is also quite less. Truly speaking even if the entry fee was more i would have gone there for sure. This fort is worth the visit.

Golconda fort, Charminar not to reopen from tomorrow

Hyderabad: A day after the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) decided to reopen all of its monuments, the regional office of the ASI here however will not reopen the historic Charminar and Golconda fort, two monuments which fall under its purview, from June 16 (Wednesday)

Senior officials from the ASI who are in-charge of the monument told Siasat.com that even though the ASI’s Delhi office has decided to reopen its monuments, the regional office here in Hyderabad will also need the all clear from the Hyderabad district administration. “Since there is a lockdown and as COVID-19 cases are still being reported, we decided not to open up both monuments,” one of the ASI officials informed.

A day earlier, the ASI in a directive had said that all of its historical monuments will reopen from June 16. While officials told Siasat.com that the Golconda fort would be open, the decision to reopen the Charminar was still hanging as of Monday. However, ASI officials here today said that keeping in mind the lockdown, they will also have to get clearance from the state government.

As of now there is a lockdown in Telangana, and all shops and establishments can stay open from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., while an extra hour after that is given for the public to return home. On June 8, the state government had issued orders to extend the lockdown by 10 days, so it has to be seen if the ASI reopens both Charminar and Golconda fort on June 19, in case the lockdown is lifted. However, things are unclear as of now.

Both monuments, two of the oldest historical structures in Hyderabad, were in fact closed down even before the Telangana had announced a lockdown from mid May here. Both the monuments were shut down for five months as well last year, after the COVID-19 virus began spreading.

In fact, the citadel (fort) of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, which ruled over the Golconda kingdom from 1518-1687 and built Hyderabad as well, had opened for just one day in July last year. Later the authorities decided against keeping it open due to rising COVID-19 cases in the city and Telangana.

History of the Golconda fort and Charminar

The Golconda Fort’s origins are traced back to the 14th century when the Rajah of Warangal Deo Rai (under the Kakatiya Kingdom which ruled from Warangal) built a mud fort. It was later taken over by the Bahmani Empire between 1358 and 1375. It was later developed into a full-fledged citadel by Sultan Quli who founded the Qutb Shahi kingdom in 1518 following the death of last sovereign Bahamani emperor Mahmud Shah Bahamani.

Earlier, Sultan Quli was a commander and later governor of Tilang (Telangana), under the Bahamani Empire (1347-1518), when its second capital was at Bidar. Sultan Quli, who was originally from Hamadan, rose to the level of Governor under the Bahamani empire. At this point of time he was given the fort, which he began developing into a walled-city. It eventually came to be called Golconda Fort (name derived from Telugu Golla-conda, or shepherds hill).

The fort has 87 bastions, and eight gates, of which a few are not accessible to the general public as they are under army control. It is believed to be one of the Deccan’s most impregnable forts, and had kept Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s army at bay for eight months when he laid siege to Hyderabad in 1687. Aurangzeb succeeded and ended the Qutb Shahi reign that year and took Abul Hassan Tana Shah, the last Golconda king, captive.

Charminar: The Charminar is Hyderabad’s foundational monument. Built in 1591, it was constructed to mark the city’s establishment by Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah, the fourth ruler of the Qutb Shahi (or Golconda) dynasty. Prior to the Charminar being built, the Golconda fort was a walled city, from where the first three kings Qutb Shahi kings had ruled.

After Hyderabad was founded, the fort was eventually turned into a military barrack. However, the fort was also the place from where the final Qutb Shahi-Mughal war was also fought in 1687, after Aurangzeb attacked the Golconda kingdom. He succeeded after an eight month long battle, after which the entire Qutb Shahi area was brought under Mughal territory.

The Nizams (Asaf Jahi dynasty), who ruled next, were high-ranking Mughal soldiers. The first Nizam, Mir Qamruddin Khan, attained the position in 1724 and ruled from Aurangabad, which was the capital of the Deccan (Nizam territory).

Golconda is a must see spots in Hyderabad without a mention. But before trying to understand its importance, let us try to take a sneek peek at how the name emerged in the first place. It is a well known fact that mountains were mostly habited by the Shepherds and in Telugu, being the local language, the shepherds were called Golla and the Hill that was habited by the Golla’s was called as Golla Konda, where Konda meant Hill in Telugu. Later it has slowly also got a name as Golconda as Gol meant round in Hindi language, owing to its round shaped hill structure.

During the medival period of Qutb Shah Empire, this Fort was the capitol of the kingdom in Southern India. This is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as it is still cherished as the source of few of the most Golkonda, also known as “Golconda”, Gol konda (“Round shaped hill”), or Golla konda,(Shepherds Hill) is a citadel and fort in Southern India and was the capital of the medieval sultanate of the Qutb Shahi dynasty .The region is known for the mines that have produced some of the world’s most famous gems, including the Koh-i-Noor, the Hope Diamond, Nassak Diamond and the Noor-ul-Ain. Golconda is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Do you want to know a little history about its heritage? Well, we have it for you!

Originally, Golconda was called as Mankal during the Kakatiya Dynasty times. And the purpose was to defend their territory from the western attacks onto the Kondapalli Fort which was the Capitol Palace. Almost standing at a height of 120 feet, this entire building is built with granite. When there is a 390 feet compound wall, then there is nothing that can penetrate the fortress.

The whole story went upside down when the Bahmani Sultanate has won over and the Golconda Fort has become the main Palace of the Kingdom in the south. The three succeeding Qutb Shahi Sutans have extended the Fort to another five kilometers into what we see today. Until the late 1590s, this remained to be the capital of Qutb Shahi Dynasty when it the capital was shifted to Hyderabad city.

But when it fell into the reigns of Aurangzeb who was then the Mughal Emperor, it slowly started losing its lustre and importance in Indian political matters by the time of 1687.

How magnificent is its architecture?

If it was not as magnificent as we say here, will it be listed in one of the most cherished archeological monuments treasure by the Archeaological Survey of India? Definitely not. The 4 monuments that stretch upto 10 kilometers have a massive boundary wall that has about 87 bastions among which few have cannons standing solidly, 8 entry ways and drawbridges are almost 4.

Coming to its interiors, there are quite a lot of Royal Chambers, very large Hallways, the Temples too along side the Mosques. You can also find the Magazines and stables all well planned around the Fortress.

The most famous Fateh Darwaza has sharp and long spikes to it so as to not get bulldozed down by the Elephants to open the Doors from the south east corner of the Fort. It is said that these doors also give out echoes oing to their architectural beauties. There is another place where visitors usually clap in order to hear themselves reverberating through the Fort walls. This was usually built to send messages from one corner to another. Anything spoke here would be heard at the Bala Hissar pavilion which stands at a kilometer distance and the highest point of the entire place. If in case there is an attack, the Royals were immediately announced from here itself.

The Diamond Chamber: Well, any Royal palace will always have a diamond story to it attached and this Golconda is no exception. It is famous for having a vault for its diamonds which has kept Kohinoor diamond as well.

These diamonds were brought from various mines such as Atkur of Krishna District, Kollur mine of Kollur district. These were first found and cherished during the time of the Kaktiya kingdom. Being the one and only diamond mine that was discovered in the country, it was very famous in India.

Apart from that, this Diamond history goes back to note that this was the trade market for Diamond trading during few hundred years ago. Even though there were many other mines that had diamonds around the corner but then the British during their era had believed that the best diamonds were found exclusively in Golconda mine alone.

They have taken back many Diamonds that belonged to India which were found in Golconda and the below is the list of the Diamonds to name a few.
