Understanding “Blocked” or Sideways Tarot Cards

Bema is an avid dreamtime traveler and teacher who loves sharing her experiences and adventures for others to benefit from.

Understand what it means when a tarot card is “blocked” and learn how to interpret this type of card position.

What Does It Mean When a Tarot Card Falls Out Sideways?

First and foremost, know that most tarot readers consider any card which presents itself on its side to be a “blocked” card.

When the card is in its “normal” view, it’s upright, and when it is upside down, it’s considered “reversed.”

What’s the Difference Between “Blocked” and “Reversed”?

These labels are simple and really only suggest that the energy coming from the card holds slightly different meanings in each position:

Upright is generally considered to be the most positive meaning.

is generally considered to be the most positive meaning. Reversed is considered to be the negative or opposite meaning.

is considered to be the negative or opposite meaning. Blocked often means that the energy that the card is talking about is either not available to the querent or impeding the querent from their desires (hence the term “blocked”).

To give you an example, let’s talk for a moment about the Tower card from the Major Arcana.

The Tower card in the Rider-Waite deck. The Tower Card

The Tower Card Meaning

The Tower sits between the Devil and the Star in position number 16 of the Major Arcana. As we finally gain an understanding that the Devil is simply a deeper side of ourselves and nothing to fear, we are truly put to the test with the Tower card, the card of absolute change—a scary thing for most people regardless of how large the change might be.

The Tower has a very specific purpose, for the change it creates becomes the catalyst that will bring out the Star card, one of true balance—though the only way you’ll ever achieve that balance is to jump. When the upright Tower card comes up in any reading, that is its main message: “Leap and the net will appear…”

It’s truly a card of faith that asks us to trust when it says that change is coming, and it will be no good to hold onto the past, which is metaphorically represented by the Tower in the image itself. It’s up in flames and surrounded by a troubled ocean. There’s no food or clean water anywhere to be found, and the only light comes from the lightning which spontaneously struck the tower and started the fire.

Now that all of this has been said, remember: This is true of the Tower card in its upright position.

The Tower Reversed

Once reversed, the card takes on a whole new meaning that plays upon the same themes as the upright position. In its reversed format, the Tower card is still all about change—though instead of the message being “Jump,” it’s more like “Hold on like your life depends on it!”

In its upright position, the card is rather soothing, suggesting that although a change is coming that you cannot stop, it means good things for you and those around you. The Tower in reverse suggests that it’s going to feel like there are great changes taking place, and maybe even as though there is a bunch of chaos in the air—but really, there is not, and this is simply a time when you want to wait it out.

The Tower Card Blocked

Now when it comes to cards that are “blocked,” there are two ways the card might lie—to the left or to the right.

There are many different ways to interpret this. The most common is simply that all side cards hold the same meaning—though many readers, myself included, study every tiny detail about the ways in which cards communicate to them, and that means that the way the card appears to us is extremely important. Even minor details count for the thorough reader.

It’s not much more complicated, though, as the cards want nothing more than for us to be able to easily communicate with the universe, and that wouldn’t be possible if the cards were so hard to interpret.

Two Ways of Interpreting Blocked Cards

Blocked to the Left: When a card is laying on its left side, that suggests that the querent or subject of the reading is experiencing blocked energy that is leaning towards a reversed position.

When a card is laying on its left side, that suggests that the querent or subject of the reading is experiencing blocked energy that is leaning towards a reversed position. Blocked to the Right: When a card is laying on its right side, that suggests that the querent or subject of the reading is experiencing blocked energy that is leaning towards an upright position.

Hopefully from those summarized explanations, you can see why it would make a difference. If the querent’s card is heading towards a reversed meaning, often times that means the reader can help by letting them know what ways they might bring that card into an upright position instead.

An Example Reading

As an example, the other day I was doing a reading for myself about a certain job I’m working on with a team of others, and the Tower card appeared to me as an answer about what would be best for me to do.

The card appeared to be blocked to the left, which presented an interesting image. With the Tower on that side, the woman falls blindly off of the tower instead of jumping and the man, who did jump off the other side, ends up landing on the side of the burning tower, likely injured by the look of his impact.

The meaning of the card in this position is much the same. Because it’s to the left, the energy is impeded but still heading into a card of reversed position, which tells me that while I need to hold on while the chaos erupts, it’s not likely to be pretty whether I do that or jump off.

Had the card been to the right, it might have told me instead that there was a chance to maintain a grip on reality while everything went topsy-turvy, as the woman lands on the side of the tower in a different way than her counterpart would. She lands on her hands and knees, able to see and hold on as the Tower comes upright again, slowly letting her enter the water as the time nears.

Trust the Cards and Your Intuition The cards want nothing more than for us to be able to easily communicate with the universe, and that wouldn’t be possible if the cards were so hard to interpret.

Remember: You Decide What the Cards Are Telling You

As with all tarot subjects, the position of the card is subjective and based on the experience and comfort level of the reader themselves.

Some might ignore blocked cards and turn them either fully upright or reversed, while others very much appreciate another way to clearly interpret the cards messages.

It’s up to you in the end, the reader and interpreter, to decide what the cards are telling you. It’s my hope that some of the knowledge I’ve left here might help you in that quest, and I’m sure that it will—so long as you remember that like the future, the meaning is never cemented in stone.

What Reversed Tarot Cards Mean, According to Experts

W hen hen pulling a tarot card —a practice that can help sort things out in a conscious, present, and active way—some might reach for the first card they touch while others may shuffle the deck a few times before landing on one to select. Sometimes, you might pull reversed tarot cards, which is exactly what it sounds like: getting an upside-down card instead of one that’s right side up. And the the specific messages of reversed tarot cards can hold unique significance.

When you pull a reversed tarot card—which you can do intentionally by flipping the deck upside down and selecting or can happen by chance—it essentially means that you’re missing some of the energy of that card’s turned-right-side-up meaning. For instance, the queen of cups signifies strong intuition as well as emotional security. The queen of cups reversed, then, could signal an obstruction in intuitive abilities and emotional insecurity. (To check the specific meaning of a reversed tarot card that you pulled, you may consider getting a tarot book or consulting a tarot website.)

“It is at your discretion to decide whether or not to read a card as a reversal.” —tarot reader Maria Sofia Marmanides

You certainly don’t have to read reversed tarot cards when you pull them and can instead opt to read their traditional meanings, says astrologer and tarot reader Maria Sofia Marmanides: “It is at your discretion to decide whether or not to read a card as a reversal.” Tarot is a highly personal practice, so you get to determine how you want to go about that journey—and whether or not you read reversals is one of the things you can decide for yourself. “Depending on where you are on your tarot journey, you’re learning different things,” she adds. “If you’re early on in this practice, you might be better off just sticking to the upright (rather than reversed) meanings.” Read: Why would you want to double the amount you need to learn if you don’t have to?

Related Stories

That said, reading reversed tarot cards (or at least being aware of how to do so) might be beneficial from time to time, because the intel could underscore some sort of blockage in your current life, says tarot reader Jahna Walsh of Twin Moon Tarot. Walsh adds that reversed tarot cards could also be shining light on where you might benefit from thinking about things differently or going about them in a new, perhaps non-traditional way.

Keep reading to learn how to read reversals successfully so that you can decide what’s best for your practice.

How to read reversed tarot cards

Again, you can decide to never read reversed tarot cards, always do it, or have a happy medium. Whatever cadence works for you, though, Walsh and Marmanides agree that it’s crucial to set an intention before you sit down to shuffle your deck.

Because a reversed card points to a short circuit in that card’s essence as it pertains to your life, consider where in your life you might need more insight (work, family, friendships, romantic relationships?) before pulling the card. If you intend to pull a reversed card (rather than leave its occurrence up to chance), the deck should be upside down.

From there, be open to the message—which may not always reflect something you want to hear. “When you interpret a reversed card, it’s really just getting at the root of the issue or the shadow side,” says Walsh. For example, pulling the moon reversed—which, when upright, symbolizes ease and grace—may mean that you’d benefit from checking in with your intuition before making any additional moves.

When you’re intentionally reading the meaning for a reversed card, it’s also key to be mindful of how you’re flipping it over, says Walsh. “If you put a card face down on a table, you can flip it up, or you can flip it over sideways,” says Walsh. If you flip it up, you’re going to change the direction of the card. Since it was upside down, flipping the card up means it’ll be right side up, which you might interpret as a right-side-up card.

And if you’re a beginner at reversed tarot reading, Walsh wants you to specifically be aware of the hanged man card. This card will look right side up when it’s actually upside down—because the character in that card is hanging by their feet—so be mindful of this in order to determine whether or not it’s actually reversed.

Even if you’re not exactly ready to start reading reversed cards, though, Walsh says you can dip your toes into the reversal pool by reading both meanings to see what most resonates with you at any given moment. After all, this is your practice—which means you determine how you want to read the tarot’s message.

How to Read Tarot Cards

Learning how to use tarot requires a strong mix of intuition and familiarity with the symbols of the tarot. There is no right way to do it, and eventually everyone develops their own technique that they are comfortable with. We’ll go through a step by step process to get you started reading your cards in no time.

Selecting a Deck

Tarot relies on symbols pulled from a wide range of human consciousness. There are many decks available, each with their own unique set of symbols and systems. You’ll have to create stories using the symbols of the deck in your reading, so choosing a deck whose artwork resonates with you is important. The most common deck and a great way to start is the Rider-Waite deck. There are however a myriad of options to choose from, but we’ve created a minimalist deck which makes reading somewhat simpler.

Have a Question, Topic or Focus

I’m sure if you’re here, you’re already filled with questions. Most people become curious about tarot when they are faced with great uncertainty in their lives. And when the cards are used correctly, they prove to be a formidable tool to help you consider other perspectives and move forward in the best way possible. Consider what you’d like to learn with this reading. It can be as simple as, “What am I supposed to learn today?” or “How are my relationships going?”. Here at Golden Thread Tarot, we acknowledge that tarot is not about revealing a fixed future, but rather about exploring your unconscious self. They are a tool in which you can project hidden perceptions. We explain the foundations of tarot in our app.

Shuffle and Reset Your Cards

While you shuffle, think carefully about the area of your life in which you’d like more clarity for. Shuffling and handling the cards is a great way to physically connect with the deck that you’re using. As intuition is an important aspect of a reading, you’ll need to bring yourself into the cards. Try to shuffle at least once, but however many times you feel is necessary to get the cards “cleared”. You can also cut the deck into 3’s and reorder them. When you feel ready, keep the cards face down.

Try a 3 Card Tarot Spread

Tarot spreads give you a structure in which you can explore your questions. Each position in the spread reflects an aspect of your question to consider. You don’t have to use them for every reading, but it’s a nice way to get started while you learn about the cards. One of the simplest readings you can use to familiarize yourself with the cards is the past, present, future spread. Take the top card from your shuffled deck, and reveal them one by one, left to right.

Get a First Impression of your Reading

Before delving into the individual card meanings, scan your cards and absorb what your reactions to the images are. Start to consider things like emotions, feelings, objects and symbols, and color – if there are any. What is your immediate reaction to these things? Be aware of this as you continue through the spread.

Getting Tarot Meanings from Tarot Cards and their Positions

If you’re just starting out, you’ll need a reference to help you along with the cards. Usually this can come with the tarot deck that you purchased, or you can use online resources to help you find meanings. As you develop your reading skills, you can learn to let go of these resources and rely more on your intuition. But having somewhere to start is a good thing. Consider how the meaning of the card interacts with the aspect of the question you’re answering. See if you can tell a story with the cards that are in front of you. Much of tarot reading has to do with interpreting a random selection of events and giving them meaning. With our Golden Thread Tarot App, we’ve created an easy to search Tarot Database where you can pull meanings.

End the Reading

Rituals are an important way we process events, and even if you’re skeptical, the act of following a ritual and treating your cards with respect and significance can be change how we perceive the world (and transform it). After you allow your reading to process, be grateful, clear your cards, and make sure to store it in safe and secure location.

Practice Reading Tarot Cards

With time, you’ll be able to be more confident in reading. And as you encounter the cards, you’ll start to also notice systems and patterns in how their meanings are set up. For example, how the suits of the minor arcana relate to each other, and how the major arcana tells a story. All these things are beneficial in helping guide you through readings.
