Like all cookies, Oreos come with a best-by date on the package, and that date is usually at least 9+ months from the production date. The date on my box was about 12 months from the day I bought them. Unfortunately, there’s no way of telling how long your Oreos will actually last.

How Long Do Oreos Last? Shelf Life, Storage, Expiration Date
How Long Do Oreos Last? Oreos last for at least 2-3 weeks beyond their “best by” date before tasting stale or otherwise going bad. The shelf life of Oreos depends on a variety of factors, such as the best before date and how they are stored.
Oreos are the best selling packaged cookie in the United States and they now can be purchased with cream centers to coordinate with most major holidays throughout the year.
Eaten alone or mixed into another dessert recipe, Oreos are their own distinct cookie. Nabisco not only changes up the cream colors sometimes, but they also offer changed up cookies with a vanilla outside and chocolate cream filling. More recently, they introduced a handy re-sealable package. This re-sealable packaging used by Nabisco for their Oreos actually keeps the cookies fresh while withstanding multiple openings and closings.
So, how long do Oreos last? When properly stored, the shelf life of Oreos past their best by date is approximately …
Do Oreos Expire or Go Bad?
I don’t know about you, but a package of Oreos doesn’t last long in my house. Still, Oreos should be eaten sooner rather than later. Learning how long they last, how to properly store them, and how to spot spoiled Oreos can make sure you enjoy every last bite.
Do Oreos expire or go bad? Yes, Oreos do expire or go bad but can still be considered fresh 1 or 2 months after the “best by” date. While every food goes bad at some point, Oreos probably will not expire anytime soon after you purchase them. They are built for the shelf, and even the “best by” date on them is usually at least nine months post-production.
How Long Do Oreos Last?
It is safe to assume that an unopened bag of Oreos will still be fresh one to two months after the “best by” date. Once they are opened the timeline speeds up and the Oreos will only remain fresh for another one or two weeks.
While this is the timeline that most Oreos go by, things like environment and storage methods can change how long Oreos stay fresh.
How Do Oreos Last So Long?
Despite what your eyes and taste buds would have you believe, Oreos are dairy-free (and they are actually vegan). Because they utilize preservatives like sugar, Oreos are formulated to sit on the shelf for a bit.
While the actual recipe for the cream center has never been revealed, taking a look at the ingredient list on the back of the package leans toward the filling ingredients being:
Sugar
high fructose corn syrup
soy lecithin
Some sort of artificial flavor
Palm and/or canola oil
Because all of its ingredients are shelf-stable and Oreos utilize preservatives the cookies can handle waiting a while before they are eaten.
How Should Oreos Be Stored?
There are two storage methods for Oreos: keeping them in the resealable bag they come in and moving them to a more airtight container.
If you plan on eating the cookies within a few days the Oreo bag should be sufficient. You just need to make sure it is sealed all the way around and that the seal is tight.
If it takes you longer to go through a bag of sweets then you can relocate them to a food storage container. Looking for an adequate online can be a bit overwhelming, but an airtight glass storage container should protect your cookies without clashing with your kitchen decor.
You can also move the provided Oreo tray into a storage container if you need a slimmer storage option.
Either way, make sure you store the Oreos in an area that is:
Cool
Dry
Dark
The most ideal location is your pantry.
How Do You Know if Oreos Have Gone Bad?
To figure out if Oreos have “gone bad” you should evaluate the cookies “best by” date, storage conditions, texture, and taste. Oreos do not usually smell, even if they have gone bad.
The first thing you should look at is that “best by” date. If you are anywhere more than two months out from that date then the cookies have probably gone bad. If the package was opened more than two weeks ago I would not be optimistic.
Any Oreos that were stored in unsafe conditions should be discarded. Apart from the exposure to air and moisture, opened Oreos may have also come into contact with insects, even if you do not think there are any in your home. It is safer to throw them out.
If they were stored properly, check the texture of the Oreos. While most other cookies dry out and become hard when they are stale, Oreos actually get much softer and crumbly. If the cookies are no longer firm then they are on their way out.
If you still are not convinced you can always do a taste test. This will be a sure indicator of whether the Oreos still have their unique taste.
What Happens if You Eat Old Oreos?
If you run a taste test find out your Oreos have gone bad you should not worry too much. Even when they are stale Oreos pose no adverse health effects.
The most you would need to worry about is whether an insect has been on them. Many insects carry bacteria and diseases that they can easily transfer to the food that they come in contact with.
While it is still unlikely you will get sick it just isn’t worth risking. This is another reason airtight containers are highly recommended.
Can You Still Eat Old Oreos?
Again, as long as the only issue with the Oreos is that they are stale then you can eat them. While old Oreos certainly are not the tastiest snack, there are a few ways you can blow past the off-taste by:
Refrigerating them
Dipping them in milk
Mixing them with other food
Try each method to see what you like the best.
Refrigerating Them
Many people swear that they are able to bring life back to their Oreos by putting them in the refrigerator or freezer. You can even store Oreos in the refrigerator or freezer in the first place if you are worried about the pantry being too warm.
Dipping Them in Milk
This helps bring out the richness of the Oreos, but it is best done with Oreos that are barely old. If they are too stale they will fall apart in the milk.
Mixing Them With Other Food
Stale Oreos are a great way to add an extra layer of flavor to a dish, and you can mix them with pie crusts or other cookie mixes to accomplish this.
If you are not a baker then adding crumbled Oreos to your ice cream or pudding changes up the texture and the taste, and it prevents food waste.
Final Thoughts
While Oreos do not formally expire or go bad they do still have a point where you can tell they are no longer fresh. With adequate storage, you can keep the cookies fresh for much longer, but there will always be a limit.
Stop — Those Oreos Aren’t Spoiled :: Food-Expiration Dates Explained
Written by Meleesa Johnson
During a visit to the local grocery store — not that long ago, but well before needing to look like the masked Lone Ranger upon entry — I watched a grocery worker removing a wide variety of cookies from the shelves. By big armfuls, the young man sent packages of Fig Newtons and Oreo cookies tumbling from the shelf down into an empty grocery cart below.
“Whatcha doin’?” I asked, casually strolling past.
“I need to get these spoiled cookies off the shelf,” was his quick reply as he looked at me skeptically. I suspect he was thinking I was a bit of a Nosey Nelly.
I responded with, “How do you know they’re spoiled?” knowing full-well he was going to point to the “Best-by” date printed on the package. And sure enough, that’s exactly what he did, adding that we (the grocery store) can’t have people getting sick from our food.
I took a deep breath, held up my hand like a traffic cop, and said:
“Stop! Those Oreos aren’t spoiled. They’re perfectly fine to eat.”
He looked at me and I could see he had now changed his mind about me — I was no longer a Nosey Nelly… I was a Crazy Lady!
Nevertheless, for the next 5 minutes, I explained the facts of food product dating, something I know a thing or two about as Director of the Marathon County Solid Waste Department. Poor kid…
While food nutrition labeling is regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, food product dating is not regulated by any governmental agency (with the exception of baby formula). The words used — from “best-by” to “sell-by” to “freeze-by” — are constructs of the food product industry. In fact, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) says that “(t)here are no uniform or universally accepted descriptions used on food labels for open dating in the United States.”
Americans waste monumental amounts of food (or at least we did before Safer at Home orders due to COVID-19 made us think twice about wasting our food or using it up any sooner than we have to because we need to limit our trips to the store). The USDA estimates the amount of wasted food at 133 billion pounds!
There are many reasons for this waste, and confusion about food product dating is certainly a contributing factor…
How many times have you grabbed a nearly or completely full container of sour cream or yogurt from the refrigerator, saw that the “sell-by” date was 10 days ago, and promptly exclaimed that the still-good contents were “spoiled” or “bad”?
Perhaps it was that can of tuna with a “best-by” date of 5 months ago? Admit it. You know you’ve done it. Into the trash it went!
Of course, I get it. You want to keep your family safe from spoiled food. Who doesn’t?
Here the USDA advises that if the product’s dating has passed while on your shelf or in your refrigerator (and has been stored properly), the “product should still be safe and wholesome” until it shows obvious signs of “spoilage.”
Understanding what food product dating words mean will go a long way to ensuring you’re not tossing out still-good Oreos.
Examples of commonly used phrases:
A “Best if Used By/Before” date indicates when a product will be of best flavor or quality. (It is not a purchase or safety date.)
A “Sell-By” date tells the store how long to display the product for sale for inventory management. (It is not a safety date.)
A “Use-By” date is the last date recommended for the use of the product while at peak quality. (It is not a safety date except for when used on infant formula, as described above.)
A “Freeze-By” date indicates when a product should be frozen to maintain peak quality. (It is not a purchase or safety date.)
We can all work to reduce waste…and save money in the process.
And with Earth Day being April 22 this year, what better time to practice the first of the 3 R’s in Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and reduce our food waste by better understanding food product dates?
As I encouraged listeners in this Slate podcast I recorded last April, let’s all decide to make some individual behavioral choices to reduce the amount of waste we produce in the first place instead of thinking recycling is the panacea to our landfill problems.
Happy Earth Day, everyone!
