Five Ways to Strip Copper Wire

People new to the scrap metals business quickly learn that copper wire is king! Although there are more valuable metals out there, nothing matches copper wire’s availability, value and ease of handling. Stripped copper wire is worth three times as much as wire with the insulation, causing many to wonder: what is the best wire stripper? Should they use manual methods, or should they invest in a scrap wire stripping machine? In this article, we’ll explore some common ways to strip copper wire and explain what sort of results each method produces. Here are the five most common ways to strip wire, in order of worst to best.

Burn the insulation off in a fire

Technology Level: Dinosaur Scrapper

Likely Results: Poisoning the environment, $25,000 fines, five-year jail sentences

Scrap copper value: Low

Scrap copper quantity: Moderate

Back in Great-Grandpa’s day, before we understood how important air quality was and how our environment could be adversely affected by burning toxic materials, burning scrap wire to remove the insulation was common. Now, the EPA gives out $10,000 rewards to those who turn in illegal scrap wire burn operations. If you’re caught and convicted, you could receive a $25,000 fine, and a five-year jail sentence. Burning scrap wire is not worth it!

Remove the insulation with a sharp knife

Technology Level: Stone Age Scrapper

Likely Results: personal injury, slave wage earnings

Scrap copper value: Low to Moderate

Scrap copper quantity: Low

Just about every beginning wire scraper starts out with their trusty knife! It is difficult to completely avoid accidents when stripping large amounts of wire with a knife, so most beginners earn a few battle scars. Sadly, they also usually wind up selling a lot of unstripped wire for a low price when they realize how time consuming their manual stripping method is. Instead of using their time to make contacts, find new sources of material, and grow their businesses, knife-using wire strippers remain stuck in the Stone Age of copper wire scrapping. There are much better ways to do it!

Strip the insulation with a homemade gadget

Technology Level: Middle Ages Scrapper

Likely Results: frequent breakdowns, high levels of effort

Scrap copper value: Low to Moderate

Scrap copper quantity: Moderate

Scrappers, by nature, are innovative, entrepreneurial people. Most quickly realize that burning wire and using the sharp knife method will hold their businesses back, and they start tinkering about, looking for ways to improve their productivity. For a scrapper with excellent fabrication skills, a well-equipped workshop, access to high quality materials and the time to bring all of these things together, the homemade wire stripping machine sometimes works out well. For most scrappers, however, the tinkering results in devices that don’t work well and frequently break down. In the long run, this approach doesn’t get them any further ahead than just using a knife would have.

Cleaning wire with a manual wire stripping machine

Technology Level: Industrial Age Scrapper

Likely Results: fiddly adjustments,frequent breakdowns

Scrap copper value: Moderate

Scrap copper quantity: Moderate

Scrappers who decide to buy a wire stripping machine are astute business people who are highly motivated to make their business a success! Unfortunately, there are a lot of vendors selling inferior manual wire stripping machine designs and demanding premium prices for so-so quality. It is typical to spend a lot of time with these machines fiddling with their many adjustments, clearing jams, replacing expensive, hard to find cutting tools, and exerting a lot of physical effort using them. That’s not to mention having to wait weeks for the machine to arrive from overseas in the first place! There is a better way!

Stripping Copper from Armatures & Motors

lazersteve said: Gill,

I have a project I’m working on and I need a straight section of laminated core. The core needs to be 1.5″ x 1.5″ x 6″ (give or take). PM me if you come across a piece of one of the transformers (or other devices) that has a core segment of these dimensions.

Great job on these instructional posts by the way.

Keep up the great work.

Steve from the second picture you can see the welded laminates as I suggest that you lay them out, I have laid then out roughly to give the idea of how it should be done the finished product core be much tighter. You could bind the laminates together using dielectric tape then varnish the tape or tig or mig weld them together across the top and bottom then cut to length. To polarize the core just wind a bit of copper wire around it then put some juice to it, if you need to know North from South a compass will show you which is which. If this works for you let me know and I can save some material for you to build your laminated core.On a side note, I used to buy portable welders that were on the bum, if a generator sits idle for years or is roughly handled or dropped even a short distance you can knock the polarity out of it. And it will not generate to weld until it has been re polarized, an easy fix using a 12 volt battery and a set of jumper cables, just a quick touch to the terminals will fix the problem.Sometimes the commutator will become egg shaped and the carbon brushes will bounce, another easy fix. Pull the carbon brushes back in their holders then lean the spring against them to hold in place while you use a block of wood with sandpaper to true up the commutator while running the engine at an idle. Just remove the high spots.Miller Big 40’s have a pair of rectifier bridges, 9 times of 10 a wire has come loose or a rectifier has gone bad, every time I pull a microwave apart and find a rectifier bridge I’m reminded of my old hobby.Worse case scenario with the Miller Big 40, Auckland’s, Canox, Air Liquid portables is a split commutator ring.

Removing copper from the electric motor rotor for recycling

Taking apart the electric motor rotor for recycling has the goal of dividing metals one from another. Dividing has an economic and ecological advantages. Economic because the price per peace is much higher on junkyards. Ecological because trash is thrown away less and these metals can be smelted again through the foundry.

The electric motor rotor is made out of copper and iron. The copper from the rotor is patent and coated with some material so that it remains hard and stable during the rotation, so the dividing into components is a little bit harder.

First step – dividing copper

It’s needed to cut the copper until the central pipe of the rotor. We are cutting to the side, where the collector is located, so that we can burn it and take out the wire. Remove the copper plates from the sides of the collector. We can cut with a saw, a thinner plate, or using a hand saw.

Second step – Burning

To divide the copper from the rotor it’s needed to burn it in a fire. The fire needs to be normal, not too strong so that the copper doesn’t melt.

Third step – Taking copper off the rotor

When the rotor has cooled off, start taking it out from the opposite side. It can happen that first few pieces are heavier to take out, but the rest should go fine, these are longer pieces.

Shorter wires are welded with copper plates on the rotor collector. It can happen that they divide by it’self without any problems, but it can also happen that they are harder to get out. In that case just pin them with a screwdriver.

Recycling material

Because we were using the burning method, they can sometimes give you problems on the junkyards for the ash. You will need to shake the copper so that the ash falls off.

In the electric motor rotor there is mostly iron, copper is just 10-20%.
