How do you remove the number next to an equation in LaTeX?

Do a \begin{align*} … \end{align*} . That should do the trick. The “*” versions of the equation environments suppress numbers.

How do I change the equation of a number in LaTeX?

You can set the number of the equations yourself with \tag and this will keep your equation numbers other than the tagged value the same. This looks odd though and perhaps isn’t what you are looking for? This is very useful, thanks.

How do you manually number equations in LaTeX?

You should load the amsmath package (if you don’t do so already) and use its \tag macro to assign whatever number or symbol you like to a given equation. Cross-references to such equations can be made via the usual \label — \ref (or \eqref ) mechanism.

How do I suppress a section number in LaTeX?

With KOMA you can use the nonumber=true option in your sections. This will hide the section number from the section header and the table of contents entry alike.

How do I remove page numbers from a table of contents in LaTeX?

In the simplest case you just use \thispagestyle{empty} after \tableofcontents .

How do you write subscripts in LaTeX?

To write text as a subscript, use an underscore followed by the text in curly brackets. The symbol “&” on its own is used as part of a code in LaTeX. To enter and use this symbol as a character, simply use the \& command. Commands written in the math environment appear in red.

How do you insert an equation number in overleaf?

Here we see how to create an equation using the \begin{equation} and \end{equation} commands. This equation is automatically numbered, and by including a \label command, we can refer to this number from anywhere within the rest of the document using the \ref command.

How do I use Renewcommand in LaTeX?

\newcommand \renewcommand

cmd – The name of the new or redefined command. A \ followed by a string of lower and/or uppercase letters or a \ followed by a single nonletter. For \newcommand the name must not be already defined and must not begin with \end; for \renewcommand it must already be defined.

How do I Underbrace in LaTeX?

Use underbrace below matrix in LaTeX

To use a curly bracket under a matrix, the entire matrix environment must be passed within that \underbrace command as an argument.

How do you write complex equations in LaTeX?

If you want to write more complex math, insert a LaTeX snippet in your document To insert a LaTeX block, click on Insert -> LaTeX. In the LaTeX block, you can insert an inline formula by typing the equation inside $.. $ . For example, type: An inline equation is $e=mc^2$.

How do you reference equations in a report?

Equations should be referenced within the text as “Eq. (x).” When the reference to an equation begins a sentence, it should be spelled out, e.g., “Equation (x).”

What does $$ do in LaTeX?

$ (dollar sign) to start an finish math mode. _ (underscore) for subscripts in math mode. ^ (hat) for superscripts in math mode. \ (backslash) starting commands, which extend until the first non-alphanumerical character.

What does \\ mean in LaTeX?

The \\ is context-dependent macro in LaTeX. It means that it is internally redefined in various situations and various LaTeX environments. By default it is \hfil\break and this can be used inside the paragraphs in order to “destroy” the normal paragraph formatting.

How do you write mathematical equations in overleaf?

LaTeX allows two writing modes for mathematical expressions: the inline math mode and display math mode:
  1. inline math mode is used to write formulas that are part of a paragraph.
  2. display math mode is used to write expressions that are not part of a paragraph, and are therefore put on separate lines.

How can you number equations manually?

If your equations start at 5.23 and are not numbered sequentially, Mico’s answer is certainly the right way to go. If they are numbered sequentially, however, this method is a bit error-prone, as it relies on you to keep track of the numbers. However, keeping track of the numbers (assuming they are in some predictable order) is precisely what computers are good at.

If you’ve got sequential equation numbering, and your only concern is to start them at a specific point, you can do this simply by resetting your counter and redefining its display:

\documentclass{article} \begin{document} \setcounter{equation}{22} \renewcommand{\theequation}{5.\arabic{equation}} \begin{equation}\end{equation} \begin{equation}\end{equation} \begin{equation}\end{equation} \begin{equation}\end{equation} \end{document}

The money bits here are the setcounter{equation}{22} and the renewcommand{\theequation}{5.\arabic{equation}} lines; the repeated empty equations just show the results:

We have to set the counter to “22” because the equation number is incremented before it is output. It’s not clear to me if you’re presenting the equations in the same order as in the book, but starting at a certain point; or if you’re presenting the equations in a completely different order, so I thought I’d throw this answer out there in case it might be useful.

Automatic Equation Numbering — MathJax 3.2 documentation

Automatic Equation Numbering¶

The TeX input processing in MathJax can be configured to add equation numbers to displayed equations automatically. This functionality is turned off by default, but it is easy to configure MathJax to produce automatic equation numbers by adding:

window . MathJax = { tex : { tags : ‘ams’ } };

to tell the TeX input processor to use the AMS numbering rules (where only certain environments produce numbered equations, as they would be in LaTeX). It is also possible to set the tagging to ‘all’ , so that every displayed equation will get a number, regardless of the environment used.

You can use

otag or

onumber to prevent individual equations from being numbered, and \tag{} can be used to override the usual equation number with your own symbol instead (or to add an equation tag even when automatic numbering is off).

Note that the AMS environments come in two forms: starred and unstarred. The unstarred versions produce equation numbers (when tags is set to ‘ams’ ) and the starred ones don’t. For example

\begin { equation } E = mc ^ 2 \end { equation }

will be numbered, while

\begin { equation* } e ^{ \pi i } + 1 = 0 \end { equation* }

will not be numbered (when tags is ‘ams’ ).

You can use \label to give an equation an identifier that you can use to refer to it later, and then use \ref or \eqref within your document to insert the actual equation number at that location, as a reference. For example,

In equation \eqref { eq:sample } , we find the value of an interesting integral: \begin { equation } \int _ 0 ^ \infty \frac { x ^ 3 }{ e ^ x-1 } \, dx = \frac { \pi ^ 4 }{ 15 } \label { eq:sample } \end { equation }

includes a labeled equation and a reference to that equation. Note that references can come before the corresponding formula as well as after them.

You can configure the way that numbers are displayed and how the references to them by including the tagformat extension, and setting options within the tagformat block of your tex configuration. See the tagformat extension for more details.

If you are using automatic equation numbering and modifying the page dynamically, you can run into problems due to duplicate labels. See Resetting Automatic Equation Numbering for how to address this.

How to remove equation numbering in R Markdown

I was actually looking up how to add numbering… so perfect info swap! Try:

$$ \begin{aligned} \sum_{i = 1}^{n} | (f + g )(x_i) – (f + g)(x_{i-1}) | &= \sum_{i = 1}^{n} | \{ f(x_i) + g(x_i) \} – \{ f(x_{i – 1} + g(x_{i-1}) \} | \\ &\leq \sum_{i = 1}^{n} | f(x_i) – f(x_{i – 1} | + \sum_{i = 1}^{n} | g(x_i) – g(x_{i – 1})| \\ &\leq V(f, P) + V(g, P) \end{aligned} $$

This is more of a LaTeX thing than an RMarkdown thing: from my understanding, the $$ $$ isn’t numbered, and the aligned environment is intended for use within other environments in order to display a single equation.

So, within the $$ $$ environment, you can use the aligned environment to display an equation, but it won’t be numbered.

I missed the response from Werner earlier, but using align* works too. I guess the difference is the nuance in the initial intention.

(Also btw, this means if you use aligned within align, you get a block equation with only one number.)
