How to Remove Fused Residue from Your Iron — The Mermaid’s Den

In this post, I’ll share one of my favorite tools for easily cleaning any sticky, fused residue off of your iron. Fusible fabric, interfacing, and hem tape make sewing so much easier, but they come with the downside of sometimes accidentally sticking to your iron. No one wants to have a gunky iron with melted interfacing, foam, felt, wonder tape, or webbing on it. Here’s how to remove it!

Backstory: I was using some one-sided fusible foam interfacing recently, and even though I thought I’d checked it carefully, I still managed to fuse a chunk of it to my iron because apparently the universe hates me. (Seriously, though, I check it obsessively to make sure the bumpy side is facing down–how does this keep happening?!)

I do most of my sewing and blogging on evenings and weekends, putting most of my spare time toward crafts, but this means I’m often sewing while tired or SWT. I make a lot of mistakes when I’m SWT. I’ve fused my interfacing to my iron more times than I’d like to admit.

This sewing hack might seem simple or obvious to some, but I also answer questions on Hometalk as an “expert” (I use the term loosely—that’s just what they call me), and I have come to realize that many people do not know about the magic of Goo Gone.

Goo Gone is good for many things, but it’s especially good at removing interfacing that you’ve welded onto your iron. Just unplug your iron, let it cool down completely, put some Goo Gone on a paper towel or cleaning rag, and gently rub until the residue is gone.

You don’t want to scrub at the interfacing or use anything abrasive because you want your iron’s surface to remain smooth and flat. This method won’t scrape up your iron at all. You also don’t want to soak your iron because it’s electric, and you don’t want to submerge all of those components. This is the most pain-free method I’ve found for cleaning your iron.

As you can see, my Rowenta iron is still in pretty good shape despite the abuse it receives from me. Sorry for the weird angle—it’s hard to take a good picture of a shiny surface!

One thing that will instantly elevate the quality of your finished garments is proper ironing. I never cared for ironing before I started sewing, but now that I sew most of my own clothes, I’ve become obsessed with properly ironing every seam, dart and edge of my projects. All that pressing can unfortunately lead to gunk building up on the hot plate of my iron, especially if you accidentally press your iron to the sticky side of interfacing. This gunk buildup eventually turns brown, which can then stain the precious fabric you are using in your sewing project.

So how do you clean that gunk off your iron? I tested six different methods for cleaning gunk off an iron, and the winner by far was Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, which was the only cleaning method that fully removed all of the gunk from the soleplate of the iron.

What kind of gunk builds up on irons?

Before I jump into the details of the test, a quick digression into the types of gunk that frequently build up on irons. For sewists, gunk on our irons usually comes from ironing the following products containing glue:

Fusible interfacing

Fusible fleece

Fusible web (like Stitch Witchery, Heat ‘n Bond and Wonder Under)

Hem tape (like Wundaweb)

Iron-on patches

Sewists may also get gunk buildup from:

Ironing fabric at too high of a heat setting

Ironing photo transfer paper

Melted plastic buttons or plastic heads on pins

I decided to test out different methods of removing the gunk buildup from all of these sources.

Setup of the test

I had the perfect subject for this test already built-in: an iron that had quite a lot of brown gunk caked on from probably over a year’s worth of sewing projects. I’m not sure exactly what this gunk consisted of, but my guess is it was a combination of glue from fusible interfacing and possibly some melted fabric from ironing fabrics at too high of a temperature.

To add to the gunk, I also intentionally (!) ironed the sticky side of some fusible interfacing before testing each cleaning method. That gave me a nice fresh coat of glue each time, so I could see if the cleaner removed it. Here’s a closeup of the long-term built-up gunk + freshly ironed fusible interfacing buildup on the soleplate of my iron:

Over time, I get a gunky glue build-up of glue from fusible web on the sole plate of my Teflon iron. I try hard to use an applique ironing sheet (which prevents LOTS of fusible disasters!), but sometimes the glue is almost invisible and before I know it, it has stuck to the bottom of the iron. I also use distilled water for the steam in my iron. I never use the tap water because of all the chemicals in it. It can clog up your iron something terrible.

Today I had a spare 30 minutes, so it was time to tackle the problem…

Teflon is not stainless steel, so using harsh abrasives and scrubbers is not the answer. Off to the internet, where I didn’t find many answers. However, I found some, so I thought I’d collate them here for future reference for me and anyone else looking for a solution.

I’ll try each option over time and report their effectiveness here. But first, some options using things I already had in the house (Note — except where stated, your iron must be COLD):

It’s amazing what comes off the bottom. Rinse with warm water and dry with a clean towel. It should be good to go after that.

Of course, avoiding the problem in the first place is the best solution so use an applique ironing sheet (or baking paper if you don’t have one), clean off the sheet between each use with a scrap piece of cloth, and have a scrap piece of cloth an old plastic card (like a credit card) near the iron to scrape it immediately you realise that you’ve got fusible stuck to it.
