Can You Use Roku Without Wi-Fi?: Explained

RobotPoweredHome is reader-supported. When you buy through links on my blog, I may earn an affiliate commission. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

As I was settling in for a Sunday binge on Netflix with my Roku, my internet stopped working.

The modem was blinking red, and all of the devices in my network lost their connection to the internet.

I immediately rang up my ISP, who told me that they were experiencing a local outage, and it would take at least a few hours to clear up because the outage was pretty major.

There I was, with no source of entertainment, when I remembered that I had a few movies on my external hard disk that I could use with the Roku.

But I had to find out of my Roku worked without Wi-Fi and what it could do when it’s not connected.

I went online with mobile data and looked around Roku’s support pages, as well as a few articles that went in-depth about Roku’s capabilities.

I was able to gather a ton of information on how I could efficiently use the Roku without Wi-Fi, so I decided to make this guide to be an easy point of reference if you ever wanted to know if it was possible.

Rokus can work without Wi-Fi, but their capabilities are extremely limited. You can use external media like a hard drive or a USB stick to watch content on the Roku if there’s no internet.

Read on to find out which Roku’s support local storage and USB, as well as how to use a Roku with a phone hotspot.

Can Roku Work Without Wi-Fi?

Roku usually uses Wi-Fi because it’s more convenient and easy to set up compared to the other internet connection options that are available.

Rokus will work without Wi-Fi, but you can watch only a limited amount of content with the device.

If your Roku has internal storage or can use an external storage media like an SD card or a hard disk drive, you can watch the content on those media without any restriction.

Roku channels need the internet, so they won’t work if you don’t have Wi-Fi.

Their content is stored on the internet and not in the Roku itself.

Your remote will still work, but if it’s having pairing issues or its light is blinking, replace the batteries and consider replacing it if it’s still having problems.

Does Roku Work With Wired Internet?

If your router’s Wi-Fi capabilities are down but the internet is still available, some Roku models allow you to connect an ethernet cable for the internet.

Roku TVs and the Roku Ultra have an ethernet port on the back of the devices to connect your router.

I recommend using the DbillionDa Cat 8 ethernet cable because of its longer than average length and the speeds and build quality that it offers.

After connecting the ethernet cable to the Roku and the router, you’ll need to configure the new connection.

To do this:

Press the Home button on the Roku remote. Open Settings. Navigate to Network > Wired. Follow the prompts to finish the connection setup.

After you set up the connection, try playing content from an online streaming service or try playing a channel.

Can Roku Use Phone Hotspot?

Since phone hotspots are also basically Wi-Fi routers, your Roku can connect to them for the internet.

Watching content and very high quality won’t be cheap because data usage will be pretty high.

Make sure you are using only the mobile data you have, and if you go over the limit, your provider will end up charging you extra.

Some providers charge hotspot usage separately, so check your hotspot usage instead of phone data usage.

Additional charges may apply to your phone bill if you want to use your Roku with your mobile internet like you would with a regular internet connection.

If you ration and manage your data use perfectly, then using a hotspot is a viable choice, although I’d still recommend going for a broadband connection.

What Can The Roku Do Without Internet

Without the internet, your Roku won’t just turn into a useless box; it still can do many things.

I will be talking about a few things you can do with your Roku if there is no internet.

Use screen mirroring

If your router is wireless but has no internet connection, all your devices remain in the local network.

They won’t be able to talk to the outside internet, but they will speak to each other.

This means that screen mirroring is still a viable option and will let you cast content on your phone to the TV.

You can stream content that’s not copyright protected, like YouTube videos with mobile data, and send the picture on your phone to the TV over your Wi-Fi network.

Some phones will automatically start using mobile data if there’s no internet on Wi-Fi, which means you can stay connected to your Wi-Fi while connecting to the internet with mobile data.

Phones on iOS will automatically switch, but some Android phones would require you to turn the feature on.

First, connect Roku and your phone to the same Wi-Fi network.

To activate mobile data use when Wi-Fi loses internet access:

Open the Settings menu. Scroll down and tap About Phone. Tap Build Number seven times. Go back to the Settings page and scroll down. Tap Developer Options. Scroll down to find Cellular Data Always Active or Mobile Data Always Active, and turn it on.

Now to activate mirroring:

Open the Settings page. Go to System > Screen Mirroring. Go to your phone and search “screen mirroring” on the Settings page. Samsung has named their mirroring feature “Smart View”; other brands may have different names. Turn Screen Mirroring on. Select your Roku from the list. Confirm the mirroring prompt on your Roku. Select “Proceed anyway” on the prompt that appears.

Now you can easily mirror DRM-free content like a YouTube video or something that you’ve stored on your phone.

Use External Media

Some Roku devices like the Roku Ultra, Streambar, and Roku TVs have USB ports that you can connect to external storage like a hard drive or a USB drive.

Just plug in the storage device and select it on the Roku to view the files on the device.

You can play the content like you would any other type of content on the Roku.

Troubleshoot Your Internet Connection

If you have Wi-Fi but no internet, there are a few fixes that you must try regardless of what happened to your internet.

These steps are pretty easy to follow and have a chance to fix the issues with your internet.

Restart Router

You can try restarting your router to re-establish the connection with your ISP if your router has no internet.

To do this:

Turn off the router. Unplug the router from the wall. Wait for at least a minute before connecting the router back to the wall plug. Turn the router on.

See if all the lights turn on and if internet access is back.

Contact ISP

If you’ve been experiencing an outage for a fair bit of time, don’t hesitate to contact your ISP’s customer support.

They’ll let you know if it was an outage or an issue with your equipment and push out a fix as soon as they can.

Final Thoughts

If the reason why you’re looking for what a Roku can do without Wi-Fi is that it isn’t connecting to your Wi-Fi, the fix for that is pretty straightforward.

Restarting your Roku will usually fix this issue, but you can also try resetting your network equipment.

Sometimes the Roku will stay connected to Wi-Fi but won’t work correctly.

In that case, you can try placing the Roku in an area with better Wi-Fi coverage and refrain from using bandwidth-heavy applications on other devices.

How To Use Roku TV Without Remote And Wi-Fi: Complete Guide

RobotPoweredHome is reader-supported. When you buy through links on my blog, I may earn an affiliate commission. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

A Roku TV needs internet, which lets it deliver content, making the device one of the most popular streamers you could get.

The remote is another crucial aspect that helps with the user experience of the Roku, but what if you lose access to your remote and your Wi-Fi at the same time?

It is quite possible, so I decided to know what I could do in such a desperate situation.

I went online to Roku’s support pages and their user forums to understand my options in the rare chance that I lost my remote and no longer had access to my high-speed Wi-Fi.

This article sums up all that I had found so that every base is covered if you ever want to use your Roku without the remote or Wi-Fi.

You can use your Roku without your remote or Wi-Fi by connecting the Roku to your phone’s cellular hotspot. Afterward, set up the Roku mobile app on your phone to control the Roku device.

Continue reading to find out how you can mirror content to your Roku and how to successfully set up your phone as a remote for your Roku.

Using Roku TV Without Wi-Fi

If you are wondering whether you could use your Roku without Wi-Fi, you’ll be surprised to know that there are some ways that would still allow you to enjoy content on your Roku if there is no Wi-Fi.

Turn On Mobile Hotspot

Your wired Internet connection isn’t the only point of access if you have a 4G or 5G phone data plan, and it is possible to use it to play content on your Roku devices.

Be aware that using your phone’s hotspot plan with your Roku can use up a lot of data on your hotspot allowance if you let the Roku stream and download at the highest quality.

To use your Roku with your phone hotspot:

Make sure the phone hotspot is turned on in your phone’s settings menu. Press the Home key on your Roku remote. Go to Settings > Network. Select Set up connection > Wireless. Select your phone’s hotspot from the list of access points that appear. Enter the password and select Connect.

Once the Roku finishes getting connected, you can use the device like before when you had Wi-Fi, but speeds can fluctuate since you are now on a mobile data network.

Keep an eye on data usage with a utility like Glasswire so that you’ll know how much data your Roku is using.

Mirror From Your Phone

If you don’t have internet but still have access to your Wi-Fi network, you can mirror your phone to your TV and watch content on your phone if you have some downloaded.

You can also do this by connecting over a mobile hotspot, but since doing so already gives you access to the internet, watching on the Roku would be better.

You’ll need to make sure if the Roku and the phone are connected to the same Wi-Fi network, regardless of whether you can access the internet with that connection.

Roku supports both AirPlay and Chromecast casting, so most devices you might own are covered and can be used to cast to your Roku.

To cast to your Roku, start playing any content on your phone, and then tap the Cast icon on the player controls.

Tap your Roku from the list of devices that appear to cast the content to your TV.

To mirror your screen, launch the screen mirroring feature on your phone, like Smart View on Samsung phones, for example, and select your Roku TV.

If you have an iPhone or an iPad, play the content and look for the AirPlay logo on the player controls.

Tap it and select the Roku from the list.

AirPlay can only be used to cast and does not support screen mirroring.

While Chromecast does support this feature, it isn’t supported on some Roku streaming devices, specifically the Roku Express 3700 and the Roku Express+ 3710.

It is also only supported on the HDMI output for the Roku Express+ 3910.

Connect A Computer

You can also connect your laptop or computer to your Roku TV and use it as a second screen of your computer.

This only works if your Roku TV has an HDMI input port, like the ones that TCL makes.

It doesn’t work with streaming devices since they cannot receive an HDMI signal and have no display of their own.

Get an HDMI cable from Belkin and connect one end to your Roku TV and the other to your computer.

Switch inputs on the TV to the HDMI port where you connect the computer and start playing the content on your computer to see it on the big screen.

For Roku Streaming devices, computers can use the built-in cast function in the Google Chrome browser that lets you cast to any Chromecast-supported device.

Play some content and click the three dots menu on the top right of the browser.

Click Cast and then select your Roku TV from the list of devices.

Using Roku TV Without Remote

Unlike losing internet access, losing your remote won’t be that restrictive on what you can do with your Roku device.

Replacing your remote is pretty easy, so choose any of the methods that I will discuss in the following sections.

Set up The Roku App

Roku has an app for your mobile phones to control your Roku devices without your remote.

To set up the app with your phone, follow the steps below:

Make sure your Roku and your phone are on the same Wi-Fi network. It can be the network that your router has created or your phone’s hotspot. Install the app from your phone’s app store. Launch the app after it installs. Go through the initial setup process. Select Devices once you reach the home screen of the app. The app will find your Roku automatically, so tap it from the list to select it. After the app finishes connecting, tap the Remote icon on the home screen to start controlling your TV.

Order A Replacement Remote

Another possible option is to order a replacement remote for your Roku TV.

You only need to pair the remote to the Roku once you get the remote to start using it.

You can also get a universal remote like the SofaBaton U1 that’s compatible with Roku devices that can also control devices other than your Roku.

Contact Support

If you can’t connect your Roku to Wi-Fi, or need your remote replaced, contacting Roku support would be an excellent place to start.

They can walk you through a few more ways to fix your Roku if it is the only device you have that’s having trouble connecting to the internet.

In cases where your internet has been down for a few hours, contact your ISP to know why your internet is down.

Final Thoughts

To fix other issues with your Roku remote, like the volume key not working or the remote not pairing, try getting a new Roku remote.

Troubleshooting methods like resetting your Roku are still possible even if you don’t have a remote. All you need is the Roku mobile app.

Casting to your Roku doesn’t require an internet connection; all it needs is that both devices should be on the same local network.

It is an excellent option if you’ve lost internet access, but you have content offline on your other devices that you can watch.
