How To Play Against Master Yi? The Best Counter Tips To Beat Master Yi
Master Yi is one of those champions that, if he really gets fed early, he will simply run down every lane and slaughter everyone on your team. If not, he can focus on power farming. You won’t see him gank any lane, but when he completes his core items, the same thing will happen he will simply end the game by always killing everyone on your team. Master Yi is a champion that has really high physical damage output, but he is not invincible. Despite having incredible damage, Master Yi lacks CC to stop his enemies. His only sustainability is his W which can be easily stopped with a stun or taunt or even silence.
Master Yi relies on his basic attacks and always needs to get near a champion to damage them. He has one gap closer, which is his alpha strike which is his main damage source. Master Yi can be daunting on lower ranks. Still, in higher elo, he really doesn’t get played that often because people know how to easily counter him. Now that we’ve seen how e fairs in games, let’s study his skills so you can counter him even further.
Master Yi’s Abilities
Passive – Double Strike – Each time master Yi strikes an opponent, he gains one stack of Double strikes. At 3 stacks, he strikes twice, the second strike being 50% weaker than the first one. This ability can critically strike a tower on the 2 nd hit.

With tons of kill pressure and his insane ability to solo carry, it’s important that you learn how to play against him so he is unable to take over the map.
Setting Master Yi behind is a sure-fire way of ensuring he has very little impact in the later parts of the game.
Even though the season has only just started, Master Yi has shown a dominating performance at all ranks and at all levels of play and you’ll probably find yourself against him sooner rather than later.

1) Ward your lane to counter ganks
One of the most impactful ways of preventing ganks and countering any Jungler is by knowing when they’re about to gank your lane.
You can do this by tracking the enemy Jungler (which we will talk about shortly) and by warding your lane and keeping a constant eye on the minimap.
Vision is incredibly important in League of Legends. If you do not have good vision, the enemy can easily run amuck.
Master Yi is somebody who can easily abuse enemies who do not place vision to counter him. In particular, if you’re a player who is constantly pushing the minion wave.
Having vision in river bushes and around your lane is going to make it harder for Master Yi to gank you. If you’re pushing, vision can give you enough time to back away or move to safety so Master Yi cannot take you down.

Master Yi will often take a detour and gank lanes that are on low health as it will usually result in a kill for him.
As he has no CC tools, he will be looking for opportunities to kill targets that are very easy to gank- and being on low health is as easy as they come.
Master Yi will prioritize ganks on enemy champion that are easier to kill rather than trying to force a gank on a lane with minimal kill pressure.
If you’re on low health and unsure of where Master Yi is, just recall. Giving him an additional 300 gold (plus any bounty) could be the first step he needs to start the avalanche.

Tracking the enemy Jungler is a great way of setting them behind in the early game. By knowing where they are at any given moment, your team shouldn’t die to ganks as you should see the enemy coming.

Furthermore, tracking a Master Yi and knowing that he is on one side of the map such as the top side could allow you to take the Dragon uncontested or gank the bottom lane knowing that he is unable to make an impact.

The person who arrives early probably didn’t leash for the enemy Jungler, so it is safe to assume that the enemy started on the opposite side of the map.
However, this isn’t a fool-proof method as some players “fake leash” which is where they stand out of vision and show themselves at roughly the same time as their allies in the other side lane.

In team fights, Master Yi will try to dish out as much damage as he can to whoever he can. In most situations, he will use his Q to get onto the enemy backline and try to take down the carries.
As this strat is incredibly common, your best bet is to focus him down as soon as he uses his Q aggressively. If your whole team focuses him down at the start of the fight, he will be unable to deal damage to your team and survive the fight.
Try your hardest to play around his Q: using CC/skill shots once he has left the animation and using interrupts and CC to prevent him from moving or going deeper on to your carries.
If you can take him down at the start of the fight, his team will struggle to clean up the fight.
If 4 or 5 of your allies focus Master Yi, he will die quickly. If one person focuses him, he will not die fast. If Master Yi is ahead, try to focus him first at all times.
5) Invest in Grevious Wounds
Master Yi will have a lot of sustain in team fights thanks to the items he buys and his W. Purchasing items that reduce healing such as Executioner’s Calling or Morellonomicon will reduce his ability to heal in team fights.
If you do not buy any items that will reduce his healing, he will be really difficult to kill, so make sure you buy these items at your earliest convenience. Do not buy this item once Master Yi becomes a problem- buy it early so he doesn’t become the problem.
If you have Ignite, make sure you Ignite him as soon as he engages as Ignite also applies Grevious Wounds and will reduce his sustain.

Champions with CC are good against Master Yi as it will make it hard for him to reposition and kill everyone in a team fight. If you can lock him down, he will be unable to use his Q and bop and weave in team fights.
Any CC is good against Master Yi. Taunt, sleep, blind, airborne and silence are all actions to prevent him from dealing tons of damage in team fights. Picking champions with any of these tools should make team fights a lot easier.
His Q however, is a great dodging tool, especially against skill shots. A good option would be to pick champions with point and click or easy to land CC such as Jax (E), Maokai (W), Leona (Q), or Nautilus (Passive).
These champions have easy to land CC which almost guarantees you to lock him down briefly.
If your champion doesn’t have point and click CC, try to wait for Master Yi to come out of his Q animation before using your skill shots to reduce his chances of dodging the immobilization.

Usually a 3v1 will result in a 1 for 1 as the rest of his team gains uncontested objectives or wins an uneven fight.
When he is the strongest on the map, he becomes a laner taking much lane farm and split pushing. He can easily keep a lane perma-pushed to tower, permanently locking down at least defender (usually top laner); if he is pushing bot while the rest of his team push top, the 30 seconds between minion waves is not enough for a defender to both clear the wave and have a presence in top without Yi hitting the turret. If you don’t send your best duelest to defend vs him, Yi will tower dive and get a kill and probably a turret. In some cases no one can survive him solo under tower due to champion selection. If you send 2 or 3 to deal with him, he can still keep pushed while having easy escapes with Ghost, Ult and Q over walls to monsters. Therefore the rest of his team have an advantage where they are. If stalemate is reached, Yi can usually force a mistake just by going out of vision. If he goes to group with his team as 5 then the defender must react promptly, or simply the threat of him grouping leads to a neglected defence for the moment his position is unknown and he gets half of a turret or more. You can’t follow him if he is faster than you AND you don’t know where he is AND stay under turret protection where he won’t start a duel.
He is not especially countered by any particular item build. Armor is not super effective since around a third of his damage output can come from Wuju Style, Feral Flare, Statik Shiv. Thornmail is also not so effective because of Alpha Strike and lifesteal such as Blade of the Ruined King. Thornmail would only tend to be the best option if he has Tristana on his team. With Wuju Style he is not afraid of 300 armor (which is bad itemization vs the rest of the team), he aims for low health targets first anyway, and he can be immune to both effects of Randuin’s.
Perhaps he can be counterpicked? Let’s consider supports. (I’m not saying that these are counterpicks.)
Leona – skillshot dependent on an an unslowable fast moving champion
Taric – has aura and burst, but stun can be avoided by Alpha Strike and is rarely long enough to kill him
Lux – miss a bind and lose. Everyone misses a crucial bind at one point in the game.
Blitz – implies he is defending a split push… needs a team to help him execute… team majority defending one splitpusher
Alistar – can knock him away to waste time on his ult
Soraka – gives armor and has some close-range damage
Morgana – long root, shield. Ult can’t be dodged with Alpha Strike?
Fiddlesticks – long fear, high base AOE damage
Jungle counterpicks?
Warwick – WW can’t duel Yi. A cautious Yi enters a teamfight late when WW ult is vulnerable to cancellation.
Fiddlesticks – Counter in teamfight with AOE ult and 2.25 second fear.
Lee Sin – Can kick Yi away, wasting his ult (if he uses it first). But Lee Sin will no longer be viable soon, his Q E R are all going to get major nerfs.
Rammus – Possibly the only champion who can win in a 1v1 duel but also be able to chase if Yi runs.
Shaco – He can protect and invade jungle early, have good ganks, counterganks and maybe even prevent counterganks. Full AD shaco might have a chance at defending Yi’s split pushing.
Udyr – major early game threat. Stun in team fights. Sustain in 1v1. If fed, can “counter splitpush”, also mobile and can backdoor turrets.
Can his snowball ganks be prevented during laning phase by heavy counterjungling and invade fights?
Yi is most vulnerable in teamfights – more vulnerable when he is alone. That’s when he can be AOE’d or focused after a hard CC. Yi’s will usually prefer to stay split pushing, only entering a fight where he can favorably clean up. If his team is pushing as well, he can be split pushing AND be near the fight at the same time by using the time between minion waves and popping Ghost or Ghostblade to get to the fight. Fed or not, Yi doesn’t look to start 5v5s (especially if he took all the kills on his team) and he tries to enter the fight late when he is less focused, his targets are lower, major AOEs and other cooldowns used.
There are a lot of 5v4 “opportunities”. If Yi is split pushing you can group as 5 and push. The enemy usually responds by grouping as 4 to defend their turret. By pushing as 5, Yi gets guaranteed damage on your turrets but is unable to help his team during a teamfight. Yi’s position is exchanged for a chance to 5v4 elsewhere on the map – but a lot can go wrong:
The enemy waveclear might be too good, making a backdoor (no minions) tower dive the only way to initiate 5v4.
5v4s are still high risk – if you lose an ADC and top/jung, Yi’s tower damage is equal to the rest of your team. And he usually had a head start due to the time taken to find a engage.
The enemy team has a communication advantage. Yi just needs to say “stall for me, push if they come for me”. Whereas your team has to unanimously agree to take action, whether it is 5v4 turret dive or 5v5 or split defend. A split defense could keep your towers alive but it is also prone to poor positioning or the enemy starting a fight where ever they have more numbers at that moment.
TLDR Master Yi snowballs hard, you can’t counterplay him only outplay his team, counterpicking seems crucial, need undodgeable hard CC
