How to Zero an EOTech

The EOTech rifle sight is an aiming device designed to allow shooters to quickly acquire targets and fire with both eyes open. This is because the way the sight reticle appears to be superimposed on the target. Like any sight, you must first zero the sight to match the bullet’s point of impact out of the barrel. Once zeroed, the sight is capable of providing accurate sighting to at least 300 yards.

Prepare a stable shooting platform. You may use a seated or prone position, but the rifle needs to be stably supported.

Set up a paper target exactly 25 yards down range of your shooting platform. Zeroing the EOTech at 25 yards will give you an accurate aim point out to 300 yards.

Ensure the sight is set to mechanical zero. Both the windage and elevation adjustments contain 160 clicks total. Rotate the adjusting screw all the way in one direction, and then rotate it back the other direction, counting 80 clicks. Repeat for the other adjusting screw.

Load three rounds into the weapon, and assume a supported firing position. Aim at the center of the target and slowly fire the three rounds. It doesn’t matter where the rounds strike the target. The goal is to have all three rounds hit as close together as possible.

Render the weapon safe and check your target. Determine the average strike location of the rounds. For example, if the three rounds form a triangle, the average strike location would be the center of the triangle. If the rounds are too far apart, you will not get an accurate reading. Try to group the rounds within a radius of no more than about three inches.

Measure from the average strike location, left or right to the imaginary center line of the target running from top to bottom, and record the measurement. Measure from the average strike location, up or down to the imaginary line running from left to right, and record the measurement. Place a small piece of tape over each bullet hole.

Determine how many clicks you need to rotate each adjusting screw to move the impact of the bullets to the center of the target. At 25 yards, each click moves the point of impact 1/8 inch. To move the point of impact one inch, turn the screw eight clicks.

Adjust the elevation by rotating the screw closest to the rear of the sight clockwise to move the point of impact down and counterclockwise to move it up.

Adjust the windage by turning the screw closest to the front of the sight clockwise to move the point of impact to the right and counterclockwise to move it left.

HOW TO MECHANICALLY ZERO AN EOTECH WITH IRON SIGHTS

All EOTECH sights are designed to co-Witness with iron sights on the standard AR15 platform. Sights with side buttons and/or factory equipped quick detach levers will co-witness in the lower 1/3 of the window. All other models will co-witness in the center of the window. On the other hand, if the user is looking through the sight at the outer edge of the sight window – an off-axis view – the parallax error might be up to 4±3 MOA (or a total of 14 MOA across the viewing window) at 71˚ F (for a sight properly zeroed). In other words, parallax can increase as the user’s view approaches the edge of the EOTECH viewing window. To put this possible amount of off-axis error into perspective, 7 MOA equates to 1.75 inches at 25 yards or 7 inches at 100 yards. Viewing through the center of the window achieves the least parallax error. Parallax may increase as temperature changes from 71˚ F. At operating temperature extremes of -40˚ F or 122˚ F, there may be an additional 4 MOA of parallax.

WILL THE EOTECH HWS HOLD ZERO IN TEMPERATURE FLUCTUATIONS?

As some users – and EOTech official website itself – reported, EOTech holographic sights experience a point of impact shift away from the point of aim when the sight is exposed to a temperature different from the one at which it was zeroed. Such shifts are due to natural thermal expansion or contraction of the materials used to manufacture the sight when they are heated or cooled and it’s greater the more extreme the temperature change.

Sights manufactured before October 2016 can shift approximately +/- 5 MOA between -40°F and 122°F. Due to manufacturing variation and upload, for sights manufactured after October 2016, the typical shift will be approximately 1.4 and 1.8 MOA.

A second issue has been reported due to temperature drift: sights may not return to zero. The zero may shift of +/- 2 MOA upon return to ambient (73°F) after being exposed to any temperature between -40°F and 122°F.

Nevertheless, the average consumer, in normal use, will never experience any of the problems we’ve just described, and even when they do, the zero-shift would be so small that it’ll be barely noticed by most shooters at most ranges. The zero shift has really little effect on the utility of your rifle.

After you unmounted and then remounted your EOTech sight on your rifle, you may notice the zero has slightly shifted. It’ll be still pretty close to the point of aim, but a minimum shift is inevitable.
