Going too fast? You’re not the only one. Penny boards are small, but there size is also a big reason you can’t easily slow down. Penny’s don’t give you any room for foot placement shifting, and if you get yourself in a pickle, needing to stop as quickly, the short story is you’re gonna have a bad time. If you need to stop in time to avoid breaking the law, maybe you shouldn’t have gotten on… Penny Board’s small profile and even smaller wheel base means less control, less of a fine turn, and a wider margin of error.
Hop Off
When it comes to slowing down on any board, you’ve got a couple options. First off, is just strait up just hop off your board and running off. Not the best option whatsoever, but it does work at slower speed. But as soon as you’re really sending it, the risk of just going strait to your face increases incredibly then your board goes off somewhere and you’re having a bad time.
The design of the Penny board just isn’t meant for this kind of riding. The small board doesn’t allow for much room, and the trucks are narrow and low. This means it’s harder to turn, carve and all around navigate.
The dead space in the nose means that there is less stability- that 3-4 inches could’ve served the Penny in the form of making larger riders more comfortable and making controlling the board easier.
Carve it Out.
Carving can be effective while air breaking and throwing your speed into some pretty steezy carves. Problem with this is it doesn’t really shut down your speed all the way, but it can be fun if you have a big enough board to handle those deep carves. A Penny will definitely be very sketchy at doing this and won’t be able to handle the amount of effort being put into it as much as a longboard can take once again having a bad time…A longboard on the other hand is made for those big fast carves and will grip your turns with ease and shave down your speed to a comfortable carve.
Boards made for carving allow for you to navigate obstacles with grace and style- with trucks and wheels designed to handle this kind of steering and curve, a longboard beats out the Penny’s stiff design.
Foot Break.

Problem is it can be super hard to keep that balance on a Penny board where space is very limited then trying to do that at faster speeds is asking for a bad time. A longboard is going to give you way more of that platform for your feet and makes it was more stable and easier to balance on to foot break and slow down.
If you’re going to be going downhill- why not opt for a board that is built to handle it? High quality trucks, wheels where you can choose the right durometer for your ride, and a board that has the real estate for your feet, all in a longboard that can cruise, slide, and handle the speed.
Sliding.
Lastly the best way to shut down your speed going downhill is sliding! Also the most fun method, sliding your board out from under you whether that be glove down or standup, using the right technique and your board to slide out your speed in an epic drift has proven to be the most effective way to slow down your speed. That’s how freeride style skating was born and how downhill has evolved into what it is today! However, a Penny board was not designed to be capable for such a maneuver and makes it nearly impossible to do so unless a ridiculous amounts of skill is .
In conclusion, if you’re trying to slow down at high speeds on your Penny, you guessed it…gonna have a bad time. Get a longboard.

Are Penny Boards good for beginners? It depends, a 32″ Penny Board is fine for beginners but the 22″ and 27″ variants are too small and unstable for new skaters. Another downside is that they are slippery and the flexible deck makes it harder to keep your balance.
Your feet will stick out and your legs will be closer together compared to regular-sized skateboards. Don’t make the mistake of starting out on a small Penny board.
What is a Penny Board?
Penny Skateboards is an Australian-based company founded in 2010 by Ben Mackay. They make skateboards in 3 sizes: Penny (22” long deck), Nickel (27” long deck), and the cruiser variant (32” long deck).
There are been many companies that offer plastic skateboards and as a result, almost any plastic skateboard is referred to as a Penny Board We will be referring to the 22” Penny Board for our discussion.
A Penny Board is a small, light, moulded plastic deck skateboard, which are often sold as a complete setup (deck, wheels, and trucks preassembled) in skateshops, but you can also buy the components separately, and design your ideal setup.
They have wide (about 3” wide), soft (83a on the durometer scale), 59mm diameter polyurethane wheels with a plastic core.
Penny Boards also use a ABEC 7 bearing, which is a fast (ABEC doesn’t really matter) and a quality bearing. The truck hangars are 3” wide and designed for use with the Penny Board, to make it turn sharply and perform as intended.
The Penny Board shape is very classic, or “retro”. The shape is based off some of the original skateboards in the 1960’s and 1970’s. They are quite narrow (about 6-7” at the widest), have a somewhat pointed nose, reaching its maximum width after the front truck bolts, and gradually narrows back down to the tail. They have a kicktail, but there is no kick on the nose. The front trucks are also set quite close up to the end of the nose.
Penny Boards are available in almost any colour imaginable. They are also available with screened graphics their deck bottoms. A Penny Board does not have griptape, instead it has a “waffle grip pattern” moulded to the top as part of the deck manufacturing process.
What Are Penny Boards Used For?
Penny Boards were designed as cruiser boards, and are quite good for commuting. They are small and lightweight so they can easily fit in a backpack.
The wheels are larger and softer than most street/park skateboards, so they are able to tackle cracks, pebbles, and rougher terrain. Much easier than with a smaller and harder street wheel.
Usually street wheels have a hardness between 99a-104a, and a size of 50mm-56mm. The light size, big soft wheels, and bearings allow the rider to get some fast speeds on this board, with minimal pushing, and a nice smooth ride.
The tail kick also allows the rider to lift up the front easily when going over curbs and big cracks. They are perfect for cruising!
Is a Penny Board Good for a Complete Beginner?
This is a 2 part answer:
Maybe- for a small and young beginner, a Penny Board would be an option to learn fundamentals, like balance, and how to push, turn and cruise around. Because the wheelbase is so small, and the wheels are fast, a Penny Board can almost turn on a dime (or better yet a penny!).
They are built for cruising, and cruise very well. If you learn to cruise and carve tight and fast on a Penny Board, you should have acquired the skills to ride almost any other board shape comfortably, with some adjustments to your stance.
NO- Because it is so small, and fast, the Penny Board is not very stable. The trucks are adjustable, so you can tighten them to add stability, however, because it is only 22” long, your feet are placed close together, and you are not able to crouch as easily as you could with a longer board.
Having a wider, more crouched stance, makes the skater more stable than a narrow, more upright stance. For an adult, or anyone with feet over size 9, the Penny Board will probably be too small to feel comfortable on, and will take more effort to be able to learn to ride with any stability.
Are Penny Boards Good for Learning Tricks?
This is a 1 part answer:
NO- The Penny Boards are not a good option for beginners learning how to do tricks; they are built for cruising, not for performing advanced tricks.
On a Penny Board you can learn tricks like pushing, riding switch, kick turns, power-slides, manuals, layback carves (laying back/forward and carving hard with a hand on the ground), and rolling off of curbs.
Tricks where you don’t leave the ground, are probably about all you could learn to do, as a beginner. There are video clips of people doing kickflips and Tre-flips on Penny Boards, but most likely those skaters didn’t learn to do those tricks on a Penny Board first.
Given the small size, soft wheels, no griptape, and only one kick, you will struggle to learn how to do technical tricks that require an ollie, or flipping the board, as the small Penny Board is hard to catch and land back onto.
Grinding tricks would also be very difficult to learn because the board and trucks are very narrow, and the wheels are large, soft, and wide, so “locking in” to the grind will be very difficult.
When to Get a Penny Board
A Penny Board is an option for someone smaller that wants to learn how to ride a skateboard, but not learn advanced tricks. For beginners, especially smaller people, the Penny is an excellent option for learning balance, pushing, turning, carving and basic fundamentals.
Keep in mind that it’s a lot harder to learn skateboarding on a small Penny board compared to a popsicle skateboard.
If you are looking to learn how to cruise, for commuting to work, the corner store or to school, with a smaller lighter board that will fit in your backpack, locker, or under your work desk, the Penny Board is a terrific option.
If you are a kid with bigger feet or an adult, a larger Penny Nickel Board would be a better choice for you than the smaller Penny Board.
Are Penny Boards Cheaper?

The narrowness of Penny Boards combines with the short wheel base to make it VERY difficult to recover quickly if you make a mistake — that means more wipe outs, more injuries and less safe ride sessions.
Comfortable control of your board (on a Longboard) gives you the ability to confidently control your speed carving down hills, speed checking when you need to and drifting hairpins once you learn to slide safely.
A bigger board is also much more comfortable to ride longer distances — and easier for beginners to balance on when learning to push.
Longboards are SO MUCH more comfortable to push long distances that some riders (like Sam Holding) have pushed for hundreds, or thousands of miles.
No Plastic, Stiffer Decks, Better Wood = Faster Speeds on Longboards
Even though it’s easier to make plastic boards (like Penny Boards) very inexpensively in many colors, the downside is that Plastic is a really poor material choice for any sort of serious downhill riding due to it’s dead fish, floppy, flexiness which reduces control. In direct contrast to the plastic Penny Board construction most longboards are made with 7-10 plies of the best quality maple (and many are further reinforced with fiberglass or carbon fiber) which is much stiffer than plastic — that adds to stability, increasing control and safety during downhill riding.
Towing behind a car is never a safe thing to do — but the lack of stability and control on a Penny Board makes that even worse. Again in this video the flex of the plastic combine with a narrow board and short wheelbase to result in a crash that could have been avoided.
The Penny Board ‘Longboard’ is ALSO made out of plastic and ALSO performs poorly going fast down hills . Even though it IS longer, the other issues related to Penny Board construction and components still mean a wood, or even better composite / carbon fiber, longboard will work better on hills — and stay stronger longer.
Longboards (and specifically the Apex 40 Longboard family) use Carbon Fiber composite reinforcement and available nose guards to stay super strong — MUCH stronger than any Penny Board.
Cheap Penny Board Components = Poor Speed, and Bad Downhill Performance
As mentioned above Penny Boards are designed to be cheap — many Penny Board options with wheels and bearings are less than $100. Part of that is because plastic is a cheaper material (albeit worse for the environment and for downhill riding) but the other reason Penny Boards are cheap is that the bearings and wheels are made of poor quality materials (just like the deck).
Even when you aren’t looking for pure downhill speed, higher quality components that are used in performance longboards will lead to more fun when cruising and carving — and let you learn faster as a beginner.
Small Penny Board Wheels are slower
Smaller wheels that use slower, less expensive, urethane formulas help keep the cost of Penny Boards inexpensive but mean that Penny Boards are slower than Longboards in almost any situation. Smaller wheels use less urethane, and slower urethane formals are less expensive — Penny Boards use both .
Longboards use larger diameter wheels that have a higher top end rollspeed and most quality longboards ($150-$200+) come with wheels that will use the same high end urethane formulas that are used for downhill racing — but with customized wheel shapes to make learning to slide and control your speed on hills easier.
Longboards use Faster Bearings
Another place Longboards end up gaining ground and start out faster than a Penny Board is in the bearings. Bearings used for skateboarding & longboard are different than industrial bearings due to the fact they bearings used in factory machinery etc are designed to spin incredibly fast — much faster than our wheels spin when longboarding or skateboarding.
There are billions of industrial bearings produced each year — so even though they are not designed to work well for skateboarding, they are incredibly cheap. These are the bearings that Penny Boards use, which is another way they keep the price to below $100, and another reason they are slower than Longboards.
Most quality longboards use bearings that are built with higher quality more materials and custom designed specifically for longboarding. A good way to tell if a bearing is designed for higher speeds and longboarding down hills is to look for the Built-In Spacer which helps to stabilize bearings, reducing chatter for more controlled slides, like Cell Prime Longboard Bearings.
Quality longboard bearings are engineered to generate the most speed out of every hill — rather than being designed to spin at a million miles an hour in a machine which results in poor performance when used on a board (like Penny Board bearings).
Better quality bearings providing more stability, more speed, and more good times enjoying one of the oldest styles of skating. Speed wobbles not included.
Longboard Trucks are Built for Hills and going Fast
Small narrow trucks use less metal, so Penny Boards use these trucks to save material and (again) make the total board less expensive. The problem is that wider trucks are more stable and allow for more control at faster speed when going downhill.
Every longboard will always use a wider truck than a Penny Board. While those trucks are more expensive since they use more metal, if you are riding down hills having a truck built to handle higher speeds is critical.
Penny Boards are fun to mess around on – not so fun on Hills
All in all Penny Boards are fun and they are a great option for travel if you want the smallest possible board to carry around. That being said the small size is a major disadvantage when you are learning to balance & push as a beginner and even more so once you get on serious hills.
The Freeride 41 and Freeride 38 we make for downhill riding are great in-expensive longboard choices for sliding and performance down hills.
There is a cap on how far you can effectively commute on a Penny Board and really on how good / far you can progress as well — thats where Longboards really shine. Longboards are a piece of performance equipment where as Penny Boards are more of a cheap novelty deck to play with.
