Stop Playing Yourself!

Yesterday, my youngest daughter (who is 25) took me to a waterpark as a time of bonding and recharging. It was my first time ever visiting one and something we’d been planning all summer. I had not made it a priority … but she was insistent … and I’m so grateful that she was. It was a blast. I learned that I had been playing myself for many, many years. You see, hen my children were young, I generally pushed my husband to take them to those kinds of places and activities … but obviously there was lots to be learned from experiencing it first-hand; here are just a few of yesterday’s lessons:

We spent a bunch of time in the wave pool … a large pond-like structure that sounded an alarm when the waves are about to start up. Lesson: waves come in spurts … and are always followed by a time of calmer waters.

Then we walked around for a bit and let our swimsuits dry off … meaning whatever has been weighing you down, will eventually dissipate with time if you are willing to occupy yourself with more productive things while waiting it out.

There were so many attractions to choose from … and everyone looked relaxed and chilled and were thoroughly enjoying themselves. There were no unhappy children (except one little toddler who was stuck in his lifesaver raft). His mother was about five feet away dealing with her other toddler. When my daughter helped the little boy stand up, his countenance immediately changed. Lesson: a helping hand is always around.

We ended the adventure by floating down the “Lazy River” … where you insert yourself into a lifesaver raft and just let the current gently carry you down the path, and bring you full circle back to the beginning … meaning no matter what your intentions and however you make the journey … if you don’t lose sight of your “center” … your “goal” … your purpose … you’ll always be guided back to it.

Yes, we had a blast … were super relaxed … had a ton of fun … and then returned to life at home as we knew it … but we were different because we had unplugged, refreshed, recharged … and were able to deal with all that awaited us … with grace, ease, and a sense of humor! We will definitely be going back next summer so I can reinforce the lessons … and the fun had learning them!

NOTE: The same opportunities in life and business await you … stop playing yourself … take/make time to enjoy life and business while you can … stop putting off having some fun … check out for a day/week … and see just how much your perspective and energy change … for the better!

Stop Playing Yourself

Turning to the Urban Dictionary for a definition we find that to play oneself is to:

I think about that a lot when I think about big digital projects. Projects like designing and building a new website. We all start these projects with huge enthusiasm and strategic intent. And yet so often, by the time we launch, we’re a little bit ‘meh’. Perhaps – after all that money and effort the needle doesn’t move all that much. What we have now is a lot like what we had before, but with more in vogue typography.

Why is that?

In my experience it’s because we just can’t help playing ourselves. On lengthy digital projects, we have far too many opportunities to let instant gratification or bad habits sabotage our strategic goals. We play ourselves. I want to help you to recognize when you’re playing yourself, and to arm you with some tactics so that you can stop.

I’m going to do that, by describing ten traps that I often see cultural organisations fall into, and suggesting some tactics for getting out of them.

Trap #10 Building a Monument

Trap #9 100% Digital Coverage

Trap #8 Divide & Conquer

Trap #7 Designing for your CEO’s smartphone

Trap #6 False Prophets

Trap #5 Post-it Fetishism

Trap #4 Building not Buying

Trap #3 Buying not Bodging

Trap #2 Bogus User Stories

Trap #1 Cutting Against the Grain

5 Ways You’re Playing Yourself Without Even Realising It

Not exercising? You playin’.

Our early-20s are a time rife with self-sabotage. We don’t do our readings when we really should, we go out drinking all night before family gathos, and we arrive 15 minutes late to work when we’ve already received two warnings (sorry boss).

These are the obvious ones. And tbh, they’re mostly fine in moderation. But there are plenty of other ways we’re completely screwing ourselves over without even realising.

#1 Not Exercising

Please, please exercise. It’s so good for you. It slows down all the bad parts about aging, it’s so good for your mental health, and it keeps you focused and productive throughout the day.

Keeping exercise out of your daily routine means you’re absolutely robbing yourself of endorphins.

#2 Checking Your Phone Before Bed

It seems harmless but scrolling on your phone before lights out is a huge no-no. In fact, research has found that it seriously compromises your sleep.

The ABC reported, “While effects can vary from person to person, it may be as subtle as your thinking not being as sharp as it could be, your energy a bit sluggish, your vigilance a bit down, your mood a bit less stable.” Any of that sound familiar?

#3 Waiting Until You Graduate To Get Work Experience

These days, a degree just isn’t enough to push you over the line into employment territory. It’s scary, we know, but even if you pick up a part-time admin job or intern once a week for a month, it’ll do wonders for your prospects after graduation.

#4 Being A People-Pleaser

You may feel like you need to say yes to people and bend over backwards — especially at the start of your career — but it will do nothing but harm you in the long run.

As pointed out by psychologist Sherry Pagoto, people-pleasing can result in passive aggressive behaviour, self-neglect and depression. Yes, really.

Be open to new challenges and help people as often as you can, but don’t be a doormat.

#5 Taking The Easy Way Out

The best things in life require some sort of struggle. If you forego the difficult thing for the easy option, you’re probably not pushing yourself to the best of your ability.

Next time you’re faced with this sort of conundrum, ask yourself what the hard way will give you. We bet that 99 per cent of the time, it will be so much more worthwhile.
