So with my setup, I don’t need to worry about backups and I also have no need for additional external hard drives. With the ability to share files and folders directly from iCloud with anyone, I can eliminate additional cloud services like Google Drive and DropBox and pay only for iCloud Drive which I can also share with my family who can use it to offload their phones and create over the air backups. Also, if by any chance my computer breaks down, get’s stolen, or somehow loses my data, I can be up and running on another Mac within few hours thanks to my methodology and iCloud Drive.

How to use iCloud Complete Beginner’s Guide
What is iCloud? iCloud is cloud storage for Apple devices such as iPhone or iPad or Mac computers. Instead of taking up space in your iPhone, you can simply use iCloud. It will also back up and store your information securely across all devices.
It’s been around since 2011. Everyone gets 5GB of free iCloud storage to get started and it’s easy to upgrade at any time.
To use iCloud, go to icloud.com. Use your Apple ID to sign in to iCloud.
Once you sign in, you’ll see a number of apps and services you can use right on the website.
You can access mail, contacts, calendar, photos, iCloud Drive, notes, reminders, pages, numbers, keynote, find friends and find iPhone.
You also have a settings option that shows you the storage, how the storage is being used, and all your devices.
One of the most underutilized features of iCloud is iCloud Drive where you can save any document. This will also show on your Mac’s Finder window for easy file storage.
This is similar to Dropbox or Google Drive.

Understanding iCloud Drive and the Optimize Mac Storage Option (1627)
https://macmost.com/e1627 When you use iCloud Drive, your files are stored on your Mac, Apple’s iCloud Drive server, and also any other Macs using iCloud Drive with your Apple ID. When you save or modify a new file, it is automatically mirrored on the server and your other Macs. If you wish to save storage space on a Mac, you can turn on the Optimize Mac Storage option to have some files automatically offloaded from that Mac, even though they will still be represented by an icon and can be reloaded by simply attempting to access the file.

I have 200gb and im I have 3 other people on family sharing, sharing apple music. Now if I want to share my icloud storage with 1 specific member, can I do that? Or do I have to share it with everyone?

I use pcloud and when install the app all files are in the cloud don't need download in local disk. Awesome content E very useful. However as a person who has the 2TB iCloud storage I have a (hopefully dumb) question. I think I am misusing the product. I still use iTunes on a 2012 Mac mini, with my iTunes library stored locally with purchased movies tv series and music and music matched (from CD) music also stored in iCloud for back up / security. However, movies I have ripped from (personally owned – duh, I’m not a thief) DVD’s converted to mp4 and downloaded meta data via subler and then added to iTunes do not have the “add to iCloud” icon in my iTunes library that an iTunes purchased movie would. On my 1TB iPad I can transfer them from iTunes to the iPad’s internal storage (and they even show in the recently purchased items list in the TV app), but I can’t add them to cloud storage so I can download them on my 256GB iPad. Yeah, I could manually add from iTunes but I would have to decide which movie to delete from the 256GB internal storage of the iPad. I leave a 15GB buffer of free space on the 256Gb iPad to temporarily add stuff to watch on the fly, but if the DVD rips were on the cloud I could download from cloud to iPad, watch, delete, and repeat.so my question is how do I add dvd rips to my iCloud library. My Mac mini is still on Mojave (I didn’t want to update and lose iTunes, I wouldn’t know how to sync my iDevices without it). Do I need to upgrade to the new os and lose syncing ability to be able to upload dvd rips to iCloud. I have both iCloud and time machine back ups of my Mac mini, but do not have the knowledge of how to sync dvd rips to iCloud.

QUESTION for E and anyone here: When i save documents to iCloud Drive (and my other cloud storage service PCloud) its still showing up on my iPad storage. For example if I save 50G of new video files, from like an SD card to iCloud Drive, that 50G of storage is showing up in my iPad storage locally. Why? Same with PCloud service I subscribe to. My question is why is storage locally on my iPad being used for documents I put on any cloud service? MANY THANKS!

Great video! Having recently enabled iCloud Drive for my Documents/Desktop folders, I'm only wondering how easy would it be to return to the former state in case I decide to cancel my subscription in the future?
I also find it a bit scary that with the optimized storage you might not have access to an old document which you really need at an offline moment, but you don't use that often so it's downloaded.

How does backup work when using iCloud? Presently, I use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy every file on my hard drive to a backup drive every couple of weeks. My co-worker uses a cloud backup service (I think BackBlaze). Both of these methods back up everything on a local hard drive. If some files are in iCloud and some are on a local hard drive (and this is constantly changing based on whether the file was recently used) then how does one back up all the files?
If I delete a photo on my MacBook, does it also get deleted on iCloud? I'm scared to delete anything on my Macbook because I'm afraid that I would lose everything on iCloud.

It doesnt back up
Logic pro or fcp folders. You have to save it in desktop. It does not keep older pics. I had an old iphone and stored pics on it and then years later i got the 12 pro max and bought storage, now it doesn’t show in icloud. Icloud backup cannot happen without wifi, i have unlimited 4g connection. Useless. What about music? iTunes? Nope does not work with icloud. I make my own music and out it on itunes but cannot put it in icloud to be played in the music app in the phone. Contacts is not getting updated and cannot transfer contacts from google to icloud. Doesn’t create a mac time machine backup in icloud. Oh and lo behold when i click on share with family it says this action cannot be completed. Lol what a fail. Google photos are way better and should have just bought storage there and backed it up instead of icloud.
Hi E! Thanks for your help! Here is my question. I need to format my mac and reinstall everything again. Should I backup any file from iCloud Drive before? I'm afraid the files that I moved to iCloud on this computer will be deleted. How can I check that every file is backed up online? Thanks again for your help!
