Features 80 % – Good MEGA’s outstanding feature is its end-to-end encryption. All files that are uploaded to MEGA’s servers are encrypted on the side of the client, meaning the user is the only one who can decrypt their own data. Along with two-factor authentication, this makes for a very secure cloud storage service. Apart from the excellent security, MEGA has plenty of features — some necessary, others not so much. It has several sharing features plus some nice extras, like the chat client. However, it lacks integration with third-party apps, so it’s not the best for collaboration, leaving some users turning to the likes of Google Drive and OneDrive (read our Microsoft OneDrive review). What Is MEGA Used For? MEGA is a secure cloud service that offers robust sharing features. It’s extremely useful for sharing sensitive data, with several layers of protection for your shared links. Everything uploaded to MEGA is encrypted with an individual encryption key, which can be sent separately. However, only paid users can set expiration dates and passwords for the links. You can also share folders with anyone with a MEGA account. Sharing folders this way lets you set permissions for the folder, allowing you to choose who can upload to the shared folder, or alter any data inside it. MEGA’s interface can be a little cluttered at times, and there’s a lot of overlap between its many features, especially when it comes to file sharing. In comparison, Tresorit is a secure cloud storage service that makes file sharing much easier and less confusing for the user. MEGA for Productivity and Collaboration MEGA also offers a slew of apps, ranging from the standard desktop and mobile apps to live chat to dedicated apps for sharing large files. The live chat functionality can be useful for collaboration, as it is also secured by MEGA’s encryption protocol. However, keep in mind that metadata, such as the email address of your contact, remains unencrypted. Chat is available both through the MEGA website and via the mobile app. You can share files inside the chat, either directly from your computer or from your MEGA cloud drive. There are no file previews when sharing inside the chat, so you’ll need to remember the file name. It’s a tiny bugbear, but something MEGA could certainly improve on. MEGA also retains previous versions of any file you have uploaded, so it’s safe from any accidental changes saved to the cloud. Versioning is enabled by default, and files with previous versions are marked with a little clock icon next to them. Unfortunately, MEGA’s strong focus on privacy and security doesn’t leave much room for collaboration options, so integration with third-party apps like Google Docs is impossible. If you need to collaborate on cloud-based files, Google Drive is one of the best options for that. MEGA’s file management system is fairly comprehensive, with separate tabs for recent and deleted files, incoming and outgoing shares, as well as a storage management tab where you can view statistics about your cloud storage use. You can also preview images, music and video files and PDF documents. There’s also a feature called MEGAcmd that allows you to use a command-line interface for advanced management of your personal cloud. Using MEGAcmd and MEGA’s WebDAV integration, you can set up things like scheduled uploads or automatic backups. Ease of Use 80 % – Good MEGA’s interface design seems a little dated by today’s standards, with its bold reds and dark contrasting grays. This does help a lot with legibility, though, making everything easy to notice and read. MEGA added a dark mode in 2021, which makes it a little easier on the eyes at night. MEGA offers several apps that let users access the service in different ways. There are the two desktop apps we mentioned, as well as mobile apps for Android and iOS. The browser experience is handled either through the MEGA.io (formerly MEGA.nz) website or the dedicated add-on for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. MEGAcmd further expands MEGA’s feature set. MEGA in the Browser The browser interface is the main way of using MEGA, and it’s where you’ll find all the necessary tools. There are several tabs to the left for easy navigation, but you’ll be spending most of your time using the “cloud drive” tab. This tab has a navigator on the left side that shows your cloud drive’s folder structure, and your files are displayed on the right side of the screen. From here you have access to all your files. You can right-click any file or folder to manage sharing links or to move, copy or delete them, plus you can download or preview them. You can use the “file upload” or “folder upload” buttons to upload data to your MEGA cloud storage, but you can also just drag and drop them into the browser window to upload. MEGA Desktop and Mobile Apps The desktop experience is mainly handled through the MEGAsync app. Installing the app creates a MEGA folder on your computer where all your data is synced. While installing the app, you can choose whether to sync all folders or only select folders. The MEGAsync app appears as a taskbar icon on Windows. The app functions mainly as a transfer manager that allows you to upload and download files and folders, as well as manage your synced folders. It also lets you stream files while your computer is online, functioning like a peer-to-peer service. One small issue with the app is that there is no “back” button, meaning that whenever you open a menu, you have to click away and then reopen the app from the taskbar. That can get annoying really fast if you have a lot of work to do in the app. The mobile app functions just like any other mobile cloud service app. You can upload and download files, send links and move files around. Turning on “media upload” will automatically upload your photos and videos to MEGA, and MEGA’s chat feature is also accessible through the mobile app. Usability Issues Since its launch, MEGA has added a ton of features, but neither the interface nor existing features have been updated accordingly. This has created some overlap between features that can leave users confused about which app to install or which sharing feature to use. You can’t create upload links for folders, but you can turn them into MEGAdrop folders, which lets anyone with the link upload to it. However, you can’t share download links for MEGAdrop folders without them reverting to regular folders. This could have been resolved by simply allowing the user to create upload links. All the clutter is especially visible when comparing the service to Dropbox, which has one of the most polished user experiences for a cloud storage service. File Sharing & Syncing 90 % – Excellent MEGA offers a full file-sharing feature set, with only some minor things missing. There are many ways to share files and folders and even some interesting and unique features that the competition doesn’t offer. The main way of sharing files is by sending links, which you can create with the “get link” option. Each link is encrypted, and the encryption keys can be sent separately. Plus, you can set passwords and expiration dates for links to make them more secure. You can also use the “sharing” option to share files, but this is more useful for folders because it lets you set permissions for different users. You can set an individual recipient’s permissions to “read only,” “read and write” or “full access.” However, you can only share things with someone who has a MEGA account. To let someone without a MEGA cloud storage account upload to your folder, you can turn that folder into a MEGAdrop folder. This will let anyone with the MEGAdrop folder’s link upload to it. The only things missing from MEGA’s sharing functionality are setting download limits for links and restricting individual users from accessing linked files, though the encryption keys and password protection should take care of the last part well enough. MEGA Sync The MEGAsync app creates a sync folder on your hard drive, and this is where all your files are synced. You can choose which folders to sync, and you can even sync existing folders to your MEGA cloud storage account. Syncing folders is easy and it’s done via the desktop app’s system tray icon. You can select which folder to sync by clicking the “sync” option in the app’s dot menu, and then selecting “add sync.” You can then choose a folder from your hard drive to sync to the cloud, and choose which folder on your MEGA cloud account to sync to, or you can create a new cloud folder for it. MEGA doesn’t offer block-level sync though, which means that an altered file will have to be reuploaded in its entirety, instead of only the parts that changed. This makes syncing data slightly slower than some competitors.

Speed 75 % – Good In previous versions, MEGA had disappointing upload and download speeds. Thankfully, things have improved with the latest versions of the application. As with all our cloud storage tests, we uploaded a 5GB folder of mixed files using a 100 Mbps connection for both uploads and downloads. In previous tests, it took 24 minutes to upload a 1GB folder. It’s refreshing to see MEGA has greatly improved on those performance times for uploads, especially now that we’re uploading a much larger folder. Download speeds are not necessarily anything to write home about, but they are passable. No. But its improved performance means that we can now recommend it to those who put speed toward the top of their list of cloud storage needs. Security 98 % – Excellent Security is what MEGA prides itself on, and it’s one of its best features. MEGA is one of only a handful of cloud storage services that provide end-to-end, zero-knowledge encryption. The best part is that it offers its encryption services at no cost at all, unlike most other storage services. MEGA encrypts all of your data client-side, so you are the only one holding the encryption keys. This means that neither MEGA nor any malicious actor has a way to access your data without your consent. The encryption protocol that MEGA uses is the standard 128-bit AES encryption for your at-rest files, and it encrypts your data in transit using the TLS protocol, also with 128-bit AES. This means that your files are secure on the MEGA servers and while being uploaded or downloaded, so your data is safe from man-in-the-middle attacks. MEGA uses two-factor authentication to add an extra layer of security for your login. This means that even someone with your account data will not be able to log in to your account and compromise your private data. MEGA should be a safe place to store all of your private data because the client-side, end-to-end encryption ensures the privacy of your files, even if someone gains access to your data. All of this makes the MEGA cloud service very secure. With this level of security, MEGA is unable to reset your password should you forget what it is. However, you can recover your account by downloading a recovery key. We recommend you do this and keep it safe, so you can access your account if you forget your password. Sadly, in 2022, cryptographic researchers unearthed a critical security flaw that threatened to tarnish MEGA’s security profile. Privacy 85 % – Very Good Privacy is where things get a little tricky with MEGA. Most users will have nothing to fear and their data should be safe with MEGA. However, MEGA’s sordid past has been mired in controversy from the day it was founded, and its relation to “pirate king” Kim Dotcom can be worrying for some. MEGA’s servers are located in Canada, New Zealand and several European Union countries. This means that MEGA has to comply with the GDPR, a law that protects your data. MEGA further extends GDPR protections to all of its users, even those residing outside of the EU. MEGA has spread out its server network like this to prevent a government of any single country issuing a takedown of its servers, as a precautionary measure to avoid something like what happened to its predecessor, Megaupload. Is MEGA Safe to Use? MEGA is a safe service to use. However, there are some points about user data that you should be aware of. Its privacy policy states the service may hand over user data to advertisers, but the user will remain anonymous. That’s similar to how the likes of Google and Microsoft operate, as well as some other organizations. If you’re not overly concerned about your data potentially being handed over to third-parties then this won’t be an issue. MEGA never has full access to your data, owing to its client-side encryption. Plus, even if MEGA was forced by law to hand over your data, it is all encrypted by its zero-knowledge service. However, MEGA does hold onto some metadata about your MEGA usage, including: The IP addresses of the devices you use to access MEGA

Though MEGA offers 24/7 email support, response times can vary. It claims to respond within 24 hours, but a whole day of waiting may be too much for some users. We received a response within six hours of sending our test query. Also missing from its customer support service are phone support and a forum where users can discuss issues among themselves, and live chat would be a welcome addition. MEGA could learn a thing or two from Google Drive, which has a wealth of customer support options available at all times.

The Verdict Despite all the drama surrounding it, MEGA remains a solid cloud storage service. With its strong dedication to privacy and security, it is one of the safest cloud services around. Plus, all of its security features are available for free, so you don’t have to pay extra for its encryption services. MEGA’s free plan is very generous, with an upgradeable 20GB of storage, making it one of the best free cloud services. It lacks only some minor features, and its ample storage is enough to satisfy most users’ needs. However, if you need more storage than the free plan offers, MEGA’s prices can be prohibitive. Who wouldn’t want 50GB of free Internet storage? Dropbox is all fine and well, but it starts with a mere 2GB of free space. Kim Dotcom’s newly launched Mega cloud storage service with its free 50GB of storage sounds much better, but how well does it really work? Let me open by saying it’s a long, long way from perfect.

To get your free 50GBs of storage, you first must register your account with a valid e-mail address. Once you’ve done this — and it may take a while, since the system is heavily over-burdened — you’ll get a link to use to log in to Mega.

You can use any Web browser to access your new storage so long as its actively supporting JavaScript. Mega recommends Chrome, but I was also able to use it with Firefox. However, Internet Explorer 10, Windows 8’s default browser, is known to freeze up after uploading approximately 100MB of files.

Even with Chrome, I found the site often locked up on me. In particular, Mega promises that, if you don’t close your current browser session, you can restart interrupted uploads and downloads . It didn’t work for me. I will say, however, that getting an estimated upload time of infinity was one of the more amusing error messages I’ve ever seen.

Once you make it into Mega, you’re presented with a typical file folder-style display. You can upload both single files or folders. You can also download files at the same time as you’re uploading others. Unlike more sophisticated cloud storage services, such as Dropbox, Mega’s storage won’t integrate with your file system. You can only access your files via a Web browser.

That may change soon. Mega is opening its application programming interface (API). The functionality already appears to be there to integrate Mega with your PC’s existing file system.

For now, you can either drag and drop files into Mega from your file manager or use the site’s upload buttons. If you’re using Chrome, you can also try to drag and drop directories. Regardless of how you do it, be ready for long waits. In these early days, Mega is anything but fast.

Once loaded, you can right-click on a file to get a link for it or download, rename, move, copy, delete, or reload it. You will also be able to drag and drop your files into new Mega folders.

Mega does indeed appear to give you 50GB of free storage. Your files, however, may not be the files that are actually stored on the cloud.

To quote from Mega’s terms of service, “Our service may automatically delete a piece of data you upload or give someone else access to where it determines that that data is an exact duplicate of original data already on our service. In that case, you will access that original data.” So, for example, if you saved a copy of Star Wars to Mega and someone else had uploaded the exact same video, only his copy would be saved, and when you accessed “your” copy, you’d really watching “his” copy.

There’s nothing new about this, of course. Apple uses the method with iTunes Match, as does Amazon with its Cloud Player service. What we don’t know, however, is how Mega does it because Mega also only stores encrypted files and the company stated that it doesn’t have access to your encryption key.

To be exact, when you get a Mega account, you choose a password. This password also serves as your symmetric encryption key. By “symmetric,” Mega means you use the same Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 128-bit key that’s been derived from your password to both encrypt and decrypt your files and folders. This coding and decoding is all done on your computer.

Indeed, Mega doesn’t keep your password/encryption key at all. If you lose your password, or it’s hacked, Mega can’t help you. Your files will be, for all practical purposes, toast. Even if you know for a fact that you’ll never forget your password “password,” you may find that you can’t log in anyway. While it didn’t happen to me, I’ve heard reports of users finding they couldn’t log back in, even though they knew they were using the right, simple password.

So, how can Mega know that your files are an exact duplicate of another user’s? We don’t know. There are many theories, such as these discussed on Y Combinator, but, for now, we’re all just speculating.

Personally, I take Mega’s warning about the safety of your data seriously: “You must maintain copies of all data stored by you on our service. We do not make any guarantees that there will be no loss of data or the services will be bug free.”

That aside, if you want to share your files privately with someone, Mega uses far stronger encryption: 2,048-bit AES asymmetric encryption. This means there’s both a public and private key pair. With this, you should be able to securely share files with friends.

You can also use this method to share file directories with other users who also have Mega accounts. If you choose to share files or directories this way, you also control how much access your colleagues have to your shared data.

Of course, you should be able to share files with URLS that have your password embedded in them. With these, anyone who has the link can download the file.

I say “should” because once you start trying to use Mega, you’ll quickly find that the system is totally swamped. Dotcom is well aware of the problem. He tweeted, “The massive global PR around the #Megalaunch is simply to big to handle for our start-up. I apologize for poor service quality.” He then added, “We are working 24/7 and expect normal operations within 48 hours. Lesson learned… No fancy launch event for Megabox ;-)”

So, exactly how overwhelmed is it? “If I would tell you how many signups we had since the launch you wouldn’t believe it. I can’t believe it. So, I won’t tell you.” Maybe Dotcom can’t, but what I can tell you is that, at best, I was seeing upload speeds of less than 1 Kilobit per second from my 5 Megabit per second Charter cable Internet connection. A lot of other basic functionality, such as simply being able to obtain the URL of an uploaded file, frequently failed for me.

The long and short of it is that Mega may prove to be a useful, free service … someday. For now, it’s very much a work in progress. If you want good, free, and reliable cloud storage today, go to Dropbox, Google Drive, or Microsoft SkyDrive. If you have to have 50GB of free storage, check out MediaFire’s offering. But as for Mega, you’ll be better off holding off for at least a week before trying it. You’ll be glad you waited.

MEGA has a selection of security-conscious features which will appeal to business and individual users, and which rank it among the best secure cloud storage (opens in new tab) services. Here are a few of the standouts.

To share your files and folders with others, you can create a shareable link. The recipient does not need to have a MEGA account in order to access the link, and users who prioritize security will love that all files and folders are fully encrypted when they’re sent. You can even choose to password-protect or assign expiration dates to links for an added layer of security.

MEGA includes a built-in chat feature that allows you to communicate with other members of your team in real time. This communication channel also supports video and phone conversations, all of which are protected by end-to-end encryption. On the secure chat, you can send photos, files, and even your location to your contacts.

Unlike chat apps like WhatsApp, MEGAChat isn’t limited to a phone number or a single device. In other words, with your contact’s email address, you can chat with and call them across multiple devices.

File sharing and collaboration are a key part of everyday work life, but they can lead to conflicting documents and unwanted edits. To combat this, MEGA’s file versioning and recovery features allow you to revert a file or folder back to a moment in time before an accidental deletion or edit. The cloud storage provider automatically saves older versions of your files even as you upload new ones.

MEGA offers multiple layers of security for privacy-conscious businesses. For one, the service offers zero-knowledge encryption, which means that even MEGA employees can’t access your password or data. When your data is at rest, MEGA encrypts it with AES-128 encryption, and when it’s in transit, there’s an added layer of TLS encryption.

Users can also enable 2FA for extra security. The cloud storage provider even publishes its algorithms on Github, so that anyone can audit them for security issues.

MEGA: What’s new?

MEGA has an active Twitter account that provides brief summaries of the updates and launches that you can expect to see on your account. For more detailed information about updates, you can visit MEGA’s dedicated blog. With each update, the provider has added new features to its service.

In a May 2021 update, for example, MEGA enhanced the design of its web client to include a Dark Mode—a change that was frequently requested by customers. MEGA: Pricing

These plans range from $6.09 to $36.62 when billed monthly. However, with the Pro plans, you’ll save money each month if you choose to be billed yearly. You will also receive two months of free usage upon purchasing a one-year Pro plan.

The individual Pro plans differ from each other in terms of the amount of storage you’ll get and the transfer quota set on your account. In addition to the four individual plans, MEGA offers a Business plan which includes 15TB of storage, unlimited data transfer, private team messaging, priority support, and more.

However, this plan does not have all the same perks and discounts as the Pro options.

To better benchmark MEGA against its competitors, we analyzed its upload speeds, which are a key factor in terms of cloud storage, and the response times for its customer support.

How fast is MEGA?

MEGA prides itself on its reliable storage and fast transfers. We tested the platform’s upload and download speeds with a stable and fast WiFi connection (23.97Mbps download, 37.13Mbps upload). When uploading a 52MB folder with 86 photos, MEGA took 1 minute 37 seconds. On Dropbox, the same folder took 41 seconds to upload.

In terms of downloading, MEGA clocked in at 2 minutes 6 seconds when downloading the same 52MB folder. Dropbox (opens in new tab), on the other hand, took just 46 seconds to download the folder. Overall, upload and download speeds aren’t impressive on MEGA, but we did like the useful pop-up window that shows the progress of your file transfers.

How responsive is MEGA’s customer support?

MEGA’s customer support is rather limited. On its website, you’ll find a help center with FAQs that are neatly categorized for ease. In order to speak with a MEGA employee, your only line of support is email. Users with a Business account, however, get priority email support.

We tested MEGA’s responsiveness via a support ticket and received responses in four to 50 minutes. All in all, though limited in scope, MEGA’s customer support is responsive, friendly, and helpful.

Alternatives to MEGA

MEGA stands out in terms of its built-in chat function and its security features. The provider offers zero-knowledge encryption right out of the box, something that competitors like Dropbox (opens in new tab) lack. pCloud (opens in new tab) offers a middle ground—while it does provide zero-knowledge encryption, it comes at an additional monthly fee.

MEGA’s security features are extensive. The provider uniquely requires recipients of a file or folder to provide a private key in order to unlock and view the file. MEGA’s built-in chat feature also sports the same level of security. And the communication hub is particularly useful for businesses and teams that want to communicate privately and securely.

It seems, however, that users might have to forgo collaborative tools in favor of security features. Like pCloud, MEGA’s teamwork capabilities are pretty limited compared to Dropbox’s. For example, Dropbox features Paper, a collaborative document-editing service that allows you to assign tasks and create to-do lists.

MEGA does not have a comparable feature. It also doesn’t offer real-time editing or a free office suite. Businesses that require advanced collaboration tools may want to look elsewhere.

MEGA is pretty generous when it comes to storage: a free account gets you 20GB of storage. In comparison, pCloud’s free account offers 10GB, and Dropbox offers only 2GB. MEGA’s paid plans, however, do not differ much from its competitors. A 2TB MEGA plan will set you back $11.78 a month as compared to $9.99 a month on pCloud and $11.99 a month on Dropbox.

MEGA’s customer support is pretty responsive. But without a live chat, chatbot, or phone support, it pales in comparison to Dropbox’s comprehensive offering.

MEGA: The verdict

If you’re looking specifically for a free cloud storage solution, MEGA’s is worth considering with 20GB for free. In terms of its paid plans, prices are comparable to competitors like Dropbox and pCloud. But with its top-notch security features, MEGA is an appealing option, particularly for security and privacy-conscious users.

Free or paid, all MEGA accounts offer zero-knowledge encryption, which is a useful security feature that popular cloud storage providers like Dropbox don’t offer. Furthermore, your data is totally secure while in transit and at rest, thanks to user-controlled end-to-end encryption.

For remote teams who’d like to share files and folders, MEGA’s easy file sharing function allows you to send files through a link securely and conveniently. Teams will also appreciate the secure chat functionality offered across text, voice, and video calls on group or individual chats. All forms of communication on the hub are end-to-end encrypted too.

That said, you’ll not find advanced tools like real-time document editing or an integrated office suite with MEGA. And users with many files and folders might also be disappointed with MEGA’s below-average upload and download speeds.

Without a live chat or chatbot option, MEGA’s support is less comprehensive than competitors like Dropbox. However, its simple and intuitive interface makes it straightforward to use.
