I’ve never seen anyone here speak English at their table. This little gem of an eatery is my favorite Korean restaurant in Koreatown.
I don’t know where to even begin this review, but the first thing that comes to my mind about Myung Dong is the freshness and authenticity about its food. Every ingredient, even their kimchi, looks as if they were prepared that day. It is also worth mentioning how healthy their meals are. A good portion of the menu is vegetarian, and there’s hardly any beef in their menu except their bulgogi.

The house specialty is the samgyetang, which is a chicken rice soup with ingredients such as jujubes, dried dates, whole garlic cloves, and ginseng. The soup has virtually no additive, and is relied on the cooked chicken and fresh ingredients to bring out the flavor. A few spoons of salt, and it’s absolutely delicious.

I have no idea why it’s called Myung Dong “Noodle” House when there’s only a few noodle items. They have a kalguksu, which is a noodle soup with your choice of chicken, anchovy, or kimchi. They also have a jjolmeon, which is like a spicy cold vegetarian pasta. Another noodle dish worth mentioning is their excellent and refreshing kongkuksu (cold noodles with soybean soup) that is only served during the summer.

I come here primarily for the soup. They all remind me of my time in Korea, with corner stores with piping hot soups. Myung Dong has virtually every Korean soup imagineable, and they’re made fresh and each soup comes bubbling hot. I’ve burned my mouth a few times by being a little careless eating the soups here.

I love the ethnic soups here such as the fish soups. Some of the soups require an acquired taste, such as the denjang jjigae (fermented soybean), but the Korean in me would find it fantastic. If I were to recommend a “safe” soup it would be their kimchi jjigae with uncured bacon or their dak gye tang (chicken soup) with clear noodles. Both are very spicy, and piping hot when served to you.

Lastly, I have to write about the banchan (side dishes) here. They all seem as if they were made just a few hours ago. Their banchan is top-notch. I also think they make the best unfermented, fresh kimchi in all of Koreatown.

This restaurant is as Korean as it gets. So if you want to try authentic Korean food that is not a barbecue experience, then I highly recommend Myong Dong.

My goodness, I really miss this place now that I live in Northern California.
