Mystic Tan Frequently Asked Questions
Before Visiting the Tanning Salon
Are there ways to enhance the Mystic Tan results?
To achieve the perfect sunless tan you should always follow two simple steps: Exfoliate and Hydrate. Follow these two steps the day of or the night before you tan:
Step 1.
Exfoliate your skin in bath or shower by massaging an exfoliant gel onto the skin with a washcloth or sponge. Concentrate on rough areas such as elbows, knees and ankles, then rinse clean. This removal of dead skin cells will give you a fresh, even surface to tan, which will increase the life and evenness of your Mystic Tan.
Step 2.
Always hydrate your skin after exfoliation by using a moisturizing lotion. If desired, lotion can be applied again on the day of your tan. Applying lotion in between your Mystic Tan sessions will increase the life and luster of your tan. Avoid using lotion directly after your Mystic Tan session.
Specially formulated Mystic Tan products work in conjunction with the Mystic Tan process. Contact your local salon for Mystic Tan products and pricing.
The Tanning Process
What should I wear in the Mystic Tan Booth?
Most people wear nothing. Since the room is completely private, going for an all-over tan is completely up to you. However, if you do wear a bathing suit or underwear, please note that it may become stained. The Insta-Color BronzerTM we use in our BronzMystTM is water-soluble and should wash out, but the DHA may permanently stain what you wear during the tanning session.
What happens if the Mystic Tan myst gets in my eyes?
Mystic Tan tanning myst has been thoroughly tested by a third-party lab and the results showed no eye or skin irritation. Mystic Tan tanning myst has been used in over three million tanning sessions with no adverse reactions documented.
What happens if I inhale any of the Mystic Tan myst?
While no one should purposely inhale or ingest the Mystic Tan myst, it is known that DHA (the active tanning ingredient) is a non-hazardous compound and causes no adverse reaction in moderate quantities when applied topically or even ingested. DHA has been used as a diet supplement in sports nutrition and is non-carcinogenic. Testing has further shown that DHA is less toxic than aspirin, caffeine and even common table salt. Based on our research, the maximum amount of DHA that could accidentally be ingested or breathed during a one minute Mystic Tan sunless tanning session would be .05 milligrams (equivalent to less than one grain of common table salt). Ingesting this minimal amount of DHA should pose no health risk to the consumer.
Should I cover my hair while tanning in the Mystic Tan tanning booth?
Many customers wear a disposable shower cap, provided by the salon, to keep tanning myst from getting into their hair. Other customers tan without covering their hair. The Mystic Tan tanning myst does not penetrate the hair follicle.
Are there any optional precautions I can use with the Mystic Tan booth?
When applying DHA sunless products in a spray or mist, it may be difficult to avoid exposure to eyes, lips or guard against accidental inhalation of the tanning mist. Mystic Tan, Inc. and the FDA recommends that users cover the area of the eyes with standard UV tanning eyewear, protect the lips with lip balm and use a nose filter to protect membranes in the nasal passages, as well as avoid inhaling or ingesting the product.
After You Tan
Will my skin be wet when I step out of the Mystic Tan tanning booth?
The myst applied in the Mystic Tan tanning booth is moist and very fine. Tiny droplets remaining on your arms or legs after the session are easily removed by toweling dry. Don’t worry about wiping off the myst. Toweling won’t streak your tan, and any myst that wipes onto the towel is excess and will not affect your tan. Just towel off the same way you do when you take a shower. Be sure to towel off completely before getting dressed.
How long should I wait after a tanning session before showering?
To give the DHA enough time to fully set, we recommend waiting a minimum of 4 hours after tanning. Showering sooner may diminish the intensity of the tan. If you tanned using BronzMyst, the Insta-Color Bronzer will wash off in the shower, but the DHA that creates your longer-lasting tan will remain.
Does Mystic Tan tanning myst have any smell after contact with my skin?
Some people notice a slight starchy smell on their skin a few hours after a tanning session. This is simply the DHA reacting to proteins in your skin and it fades away fairly quickly.
Will swimming affect my tan?
Swimming in chlorinated water or salt water can fade the Mystic Tan results, cause possible streaking and will diminish the length of your tan. However, normal activities such as bathing, showering or physical activities will not affect the quality of the tan.
How quickly can I get dressed after a Mystic Tan tanning session?
Once you’ve towel dried, there’s little chance of any bronzer or DHA getting on your clothes. If you perspire soon after your Mystic Tan tanning session, some of the bronzer may transfer to your clothing. Since the bronzer is completely water-soluble it will wash out.
Other Common Questions
What is the Mystic Tan booth?
The Mystic TanTM booth is a private, self-contained unit that employs a revolutionary spray process to apply a uniform amount of tanning myst to the entire body in just seconds. When the tanning session is complete, the tanner simply steps out of the booth, towels off any excess myst, dresses and exits. The result is a smooth, natural-looking tan.
What is MagneTan technology?
MagneTanTM technology is our patented process that uses the human body’s own magnetic properties to attract Mystic Tan tanning myst to every exposed surface of the skin.
When genuine Mystic Tan tanning myst passes through the spray nozzles in a Mystic Tan booth, the micro-particles of myst are polarized, taking on the characteristics of “tiny magnets.” These particles adhere evenly to the skin to create a smooth, natural-looking tan.
Will my skin look orange?
Not at all. Before Mystic Tan, most self-tanners were creams and lotions applied by hand. That meant inconsistent coverage. Too much lotion applied in one place left the skin looking orange. Not enough lotion left unattractive streaks. Hand held spray-on applicators tend to run and also cause streaking.
Our MagneTan technology ensures that a uniform micro-spray of Mystic Tan tanning myst covers the entire body in the exact amount required to produce a natural-looking tan.
If I tan in the Mystic Tan tanning booth, can I also tan in tanning beds and in the sun?
Yes. There is nothing in the Mystic Tan tanning myst that would prevent you from tanning in tanning beds or the sun. In fact, a number of customers have found that tanning with UV rays and the Mystic Tan tanning myst actually gives them a better overall tan. If you plan to use a tanning bed and the Mystic Tan booth in the same day, we recommend that you use the tanning bed first. Remember, however, that the Mystic Tan tan does not give you any protection from UV rays.
I have fair skin and have never been able to tan. Will I look tan after a Mystic Tan tanning session?
The Mystic Tan tanning booth was designed specifically for individuals who can’t or prefer not to tan conventionally.
Can I use the Mystic Tan booth if I am pregnant?
We recommend consulting with your doctor before proceeding with a Mystic Tan tanning session.
Has anyone had an allergic reaction to Mystic Tan tanning myst?
The components we use in our myst have been successfully used in cosmetics and food products for decades, and are proven safe for use on the skin. If you’ve had previous allergic reactions to self-tanning lotions or cosmetics, you may want to do a “patch test” first. Put a small amount of Mystic Tan tanning myst on a small area of your skin to test for possible reactions.
What’s in Mystic Tan tanning myst?
All Mystic Tan tanning mysts contain the following:
DHA: this is what produces a long-term tan. The use of DHA has been FDA-approved for decades as an external tanning agent. When applied, DHA reacts with proteins in the skin’s superficial layer to form a golden brown color. Your skin begins to darken two to three hours after application and reaches its peak color within 24 hours. The color will gradually fade through natural exfoliation, just like a tan from the sun. To maintain optimal color, you’ll want to tan every four to five days.
Moisturizers: helps carry the DHA deeper into the skin and promotes a softer, smoother finish. Mystic Tan tanning myst contains Aloe Vera, a natural moisturizer that helps skin draw moisture to the surface. Aloe Vera also softens the skin and helps smooth wrinkles.
Mystic Tan’s BronzMystTM formula also contains Insta-Color BronzerTM, a water-soluble, brown-tinted dye that produces an instant tan. The bronzer washes off in the shower or bath, without affecting your overall tan.
Mystic Tan’s ClearMystTM formula contains no bronzer at all, so it goes on clear, yet, darkens within hours and results in an even, dark, natural-looking tan.
How many Mystic Tan tanning sessions will I need to achieve the color I want?
You’ll be tan after one session, but it may take additional sessions to achieve your desired color. Once you reach your ideal color, you should be able to maintain it by tanning every four to five days.

Can you shower after tanning?
How long should you wait to shower after using a tanning bed?
For the majority of tanners, this is a grey area. A lot of them are not sure about showering after tanning.
So in this post, let’s discuss the answers to these questions and more. We will also look into the dos and don’ts on getting a shower after tanning.
Do you have to wait to shower after tanning?
To be honest, getting a shower after tanning is OK. Some people like to do it; others, not so much.
But how long should you wait before you can shower after tanning?
The answer to that question depends on the tanning session.
If you’re using a tanning bed but without applying bronzers, you don’t need to wait before you can shower. You can hop right into it and enjoy the drizzle.
On the other hand, if you had bronzers while you’re on the tanning bed, the waiting time is at least two hours before you can hit the showers.
If you used a spray tanning treatment to get your tan, that’s four hours before the first shower.
As for a spray tanning treatment with bronzers, the waiting time is at least eight hours.
What are the myths on showering after tanning?
Some people feel dirty, so they get a shower right after a tan. The rest, on the other hand, opt to wait as long as possible.
Showering after tanning has been a highly discussed topic. As a result, there’s a lot of overthinking. It produced a lot of misconceptions and myths as well.
So let’s clear some of the misunderstandings surrounding the whole relationship between tanning and showering.
Myth No.1: Taking a shower will wash away the tan.
No, it won’t. The tan you get from your tanning session will not wash away.
Why is that?
The golden bronze shade on your skin results from the naturally produced pigment called melanin.
When your skin gets UV exposure, it activates the melanocytes, which produce melanin.
You may not notice the darkening of your skin immediately. It generally takes around 24 to 48 hours to see the difference in your skin color.
Nevertheless, the natural process of hyperpigmentation is resistant to water, and a simple shower will not wash it off.
Did you know some salons have showers with embedded tanning lights?
This goes to show that getting caught in a drizzle won’t reverse the effects of tanning.
However, there may be a couple of exceptions to the rule that permits an immediate shower after tanning.
If you used a bronzer when you had your tanning bed session, you’ll have to wait for at least two to three hours before getting a shower. This period allows the product to work throughout and give you a fantastic tan.
Myth No. 2: Taking a shower immediately can fade your spray tanning.
Yes, it can wash away the tan.
This time, the tanning effect is through artificial means.
Assuming you didn’t expose yourself to UV rays or sunlight, relying only on spray tanning methods. So your skin will not produce the natural pigmentation.
Bronzers and similar tanning treatments only lie on the surface of the skin, unlike the naturally produced melanin.
While bronzers can do the job of producing a sun-kissed, golden bronze glow on your skin, it is merely superficial. It’s temporary and easily removed.
So taking a shower shortly after applying a bronzer or any spray tanning treatment will fade the artificial tan away.
In fact, immediate showering after tanning may result in poor results and uneven streaking.
To ensure that you get the ideal results from your spray tanning treatment, wait for at least three to four hours before hopping into the shower.
But if you had bronzers with your spray tanning treatment, give it at least eight hours of waiting time.
How important is your first shower after tanning?
Your first shower after tanning plays a crucial role to achieve the perfect golden tanned skin.
Whether you’re out in the sun, on a sunbed, or used an indoor tanning lotion, showering after tanning will define the shade and tone of your tan.
Now, that being said, some people oppose the idea. Especially after using bronzers, lotions, and spray tanning treatments.
Here are the reasons why it’s a good idea to take a shower after tanning (taking into account the ideal waiting time to do so).
1. The cooling effect of a shower soothes the stress.
Let’s face it. To some degree, tanning creates a damaging effect on your skin.
During this process, your skin will undergo stress. It will experience heat and scorching on its top-most layer.
At the same time, your body will sweat profusely during the tanning process.
A cool shower can soothe away the stress that your skin just experienced.
2. Taking a shower can rinse away the chemicals on your skin.
Let’s not forget the variety of tanning lotions and other substances that you apply to your skin before you hop on to the tanning bed.
These chemicals alone can potentially cause redness and blotches on your skin.
By the time you start to sweat, these chemicals may clog your pores. And we all know what happens from having blocked pores. It may result in getting acne, skin irritations, and other disorders.
Clean your pores and rinse off the lotions and substances with a quick shower.
3. Give yourself a clean feeling.
Sweat mixed with your lotions and stuff can create grime on your skin, which can feel pretty icky.
So you might want to wash it all away and save yourself from that predicament.
Here’s a quick tip when you’re experiencing reddened skin.
If you have sensitive skin, chances are high that you’ll be experiencing redness and irritation.
So during or after your exposure to the UV rays, it’s highly likely you’ll get reddened skin.
It’s not a good idea to hop into the shower right after that.
The reddening of your skin may likely be caused by the blood vessels coming up and through the skin layers, not by hyperpigmentation.
If you pour water on your reddened sensitive skin, it’s like pouring water over a heated pan. Imagine the sizzling effect.
Here are the reasons why not to shower immediately after a spray tanning treatment.
If you want to get the most out of your spray tanning treatment, it’s best to leave it on for a couple of hours before hitting the showers.
Showering prematurely can have its downsides. Here are some of them.
If you used a bronzer, the drizzling water will wash it off. The effect would be like rinsing away the sweat on your skin.
Worse, showering right away can cause uneven streaking.
Can you imagine having lines on your skin and looking like a tiger or zebra but only tanned?
When the bronzer, spray tanning, or lotion has not yet absorbed and settled in correctly, some of it will wash off. But in the process, it will leave visible uneven tan lines.
How do you shower after tanning?
Not all showers are created equal.
And this is especially true with regards to showering after tanning.
If you want to get a shower after tanning, there are proper ways to do that.
Here’s how you do it.
1. Lukewarm water is the way to go.
Never use hot water for your post-tanning shower.
Your skin has gone through enough of the complexities of tanning; the exposure to UV rays, the heat and burning, the spray tan treatment, chemicals, and more.
These are a lot of factors that your skin has to go through to change its color. And exposing it to hot water isn’t making it better.
At its vulnerable state, hot water is your skin’s enemy. It will disturb your pores and put your skin under unnecessary duress.
So stick to lukewarm water when you choose to shower after tanning.
2. Shower, not a bath.
What type of person are you: the bath kind or the shower kind?
Baths are great, no doubt about it. They help soothe tired and stressed muscles.
But that isn’t the case when you’ve just gone out of a tanning session.
Ideally, you stick to showers after tanning. Always limit your exposure to water during your skin’s pregnable state.
With showers, you want to wash away the oils, chemicals, and sweat. And that’s it. As opposed to baths where you remain steady on stagnant water.
As a result, you’re soaking still on substances you want off your skin.
That being said, you want to limit your shower time too.
Stand under the running water as it may be necessary to rinse away what needs to be off your skin.
3. Avoid soap or any harsh chemicals or substances.
Soap contains chemicals that can irritate your already vulnerable skin.
It breaks down the oil that your body naturally produces. And once it strips down the oil, your skin tends to become dry and susceptible to irritation.
So avoid using it all over your body.
You may, however, use soap in places like the armpits or groin area. But other than that, avoid using soap. If you must use soap, stick to the gentle fragrant variety.
4. Never rub your skin with a towel.
Rubbing causes friction, and friction causes abrasion.
Not only that, rubbing your skin with a towel will strip off your skin’s natural moisture.
So to dry yourself after your shower, gently pat on your skin.
5. Moisturize soon after showering.
Your skin will need all the moisturizing it can get after your tanning session and shower.
It’s mandatory as it reduces the risk of skin dryness or irritation.
Pick a moisturizer that contains hyaluronic acid.
Best lotions to use after your spray tanning treatment.
Spray tanning is the smartest way to get that golden bronze skin tone.
But to achieve the best results, you need to moisturize.
Make your tanning efforts fruitful and your tan lasts longer with these moisturizers.

HOW LONG DOES A SUNLESS TAN LAST?
A sunless tan can last up to 6 days depending on the formulation you choose and the condition of your skin. Sunless tanning formulations contain DHA, the FDA-approved active ingredient that produces the long-term tan effect. When applied, DHA reacts with the proteins in the skin’s outermost layer to form a golden brown color. Your skin begins to darken two to three hours after application and will reach its peak color within 24 hours. The color will gradually fade through natural exfoliation.
ARE THERE CERTAIN PRODUCTS THAT HELP TO ENHANCE THE SUNLESS RESULTS?
Yes, use a product line that features ingredients that are specially formulated for sunless tanning. Over the counter products are not formulated for sunless tanning, and they may block the tan’s application and impede the development process.
HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY SELF-APPLY SUNLESS APPLICATION?
There are a few things you can do at home the night before to maximize your sunless results: shaving your legs and doing a full body exfoliation treatment with non-oil based products will improve the longevity of your tan. Using sunless enhancing products designed to improve the skin’s condition prior to your session will enhance your results and accelerate tan development. Note: avoid using over the counter lotions and moisturizers the day of your sunless session if they’re not designed specifically for sunless tanning. Your salon or technician will have a full line of products specifically designed for sunless tanning. Anything else may impede the process and produce unsatisfactory results.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THE SUNLESS TANNING SPRAY GETS IN MY EYES?
Sunless tanning formulations have been thoroughly tested by a third-party lab and the results showed no eye or skin irritation. However, protective eyewear is provided by the salon should you wish to use it.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR IN AN AUTOMATED SUNLESS SESSION?
Most people wear nothing. Since the room is completely private, going for “an all-over” treatment is completely up to you. However, if you do wear a bathing suit or underwear, please note that it may become stained. The instant color cosmetic bronzer is water-soluble and should wash out, but the DHA may permanently stain what you wear during the sunless tanning session.
SHOULD I COVER MY HAIR DURING MY SUNLESS SESSION?
Many customers wear a disposable shower cap provided by the salon or technician to keep hair dry. Other customers choose to get their treatment without covering their hair. The sunless tanning formulation does not penetrate the hair follicle. However, if you choose to use an instant color cosmetic bronzer and have very light or white hair, your hair may become temporarily stained.
DOES SUNLESS TANNING HAVE ANY SMELL AFTER CONTACT WITH MY SKIN?
Some people notice a slight starchy smell on their skin a few hours after a tanning session. This is simply the DHA reacting to proteins in your skin and it fades away fairly quickly. Today’s sunless formulations now use an odor control system that helps eliminate this DHA reaction.
HAS ANYONE HAD AN ALLERGIC REACTION TO SUNLESS TANNING?
The components used in sunless tanning formulations have been successfully used in cosmetics and food products for decades, and are proven safe for use on the skin. If you’ve had previous allergic reactions to self-tanning lotions or cosmetics, you may want to do a “patch test” first. Put a small amount of sunless formulation on a small area of your skin to test for possible reactions
WILL SWIMMING AFFECT MY SUNLESS TAN?
Swimming in chlorinated water or salt water can fade your sunless tanning results, cause possible streaking and will diminish the length of your tan. However, normal activities such as bathing, showering or physical activities will not affect the quality of the sunless tan.
HOW LONG SHOULD I WAIT AFTER MY SUNLESS SESSION BEFORE SHOWERING?
To give the DHA enough time to fully set, we recommend waiting a minimum of 4 hours after a sunless session. Showering sooner may diminish the intensity of the tan. If you tanned using a cosmetic bronzer, the instant color bronzer will wash off in the shower, but the DHA that creates your longer-lasting tan will remain.
WILL MY SKIN LOOK ORANGE OR STREAKY AFTER MY SUNLESS SESSION?
Not at all. Before automated spray booths most self-tanners were creams and lotions applied by hand – that meant inconsistent coverage. Too much lotion applied in one place left the skin looking orange while not enough lotion left unattractive streaks. Today’s automated sunless technology ensures that a uniform micro-spray of sunless formulation covers the entire body in the exact amount required to produce a smooth, even, natural-looking tan. LSA locations only use the latest sunless technology that insures the most natural looking tan possible every time.
WILL MY SKIN BE WET WHEN I COMPLETE MY AUTOMATED SUNLESS SESSION?
If any excess moisture remains on the skin’s surface after the session simply use a towel to remove it. Towel off completely just as you do when you shower – this won’t streak your tan. (Systems with equipped heat and dryers minimize or completely eliminates the need to towel off after each session).
HOW LONG DOES AN AUTOMATED SUNLESS SESSION TAKE?
From start to finish you can expect 6 to 8 minutes total time. The automated sunless spray system only takes about 2 minutes. The pre-tan preparation and the post-tan redressing, will add about 4 to 6 minutes to your session time. If it’s your first time, add an additional 5 minutes for demonstration video and detailed instructions.
WHAT IS AUTOMATED SUNLESS TANNING?
You step into a booth, press start, and let the system do the rest. Automated sunless systems even walk you step-by-step through the entire process with voice guided directions, leaving nothing to chance. Today’s automated sunless systems let you choose your desired color, from glow to dark and you can customize your session with additives and skincare treatments.
