I personally hate being called out. When those closest to me choose to tell me their thoughts or feelings about certain mistakes I’ve made, it makes me uncomfortable. I am blessed to have many dear friends who know me well and who are close enough to be outspoken with me. It helps me to be held accountable for things I did or didn’t do.
Sometimes I was also the one who challenged others. In those moments, I’ve always tried to do it with gentleness and love. Love is the main reason we call each other! Love for the other moves us that sometimes we have to stop and say: “Hey, that wasn’t a good idea” or “Do you really think this is the best decision for you?”
In high school I went to a youth group retreat and our group t-shirt said:
“Friends don’t let friends go to hell”.
Yup, it said the word hell. And as a 16 year old I thought it was pretty cool to wear to a retreat. This quote has been burned into my heart my entire life as I realized how honest it was. Every time I was called by my friends or family, and every time I called them, it was out of love. Truly wishing heaven for that person and wanting the best for them.
i will be honest In today’s readings, I feel very called by St Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. St. Paul tells us to be careful about how we live. He reminds us not to live in stupidity and ignorance. He reminds us not to get drunk on wine and excessive lies, but to try to understand the will of the Lord. He reminds us to fill our hearts and minds with the Spirit of God in a prayer of thanksgiving.
We will be held accountable for trying. He tells us that we should give God our absolute best. We should always strive to understand God’s will for all of our lives, which is not possible without prayer. How often do I need to be reminded, called and held accountable for something so simple as to honestly spend time with Christ and really make an effort to try.
In the Gospel reading we hear the gentle voice of Jesus. I swear every time Jesus calls me out in Scripture it is with such love and tenderness. He tells us the Good News that He offers us the Bread of Life! He reminds us that we abide in him and that he abides in us when we receive the Eucharist. He communicates that whoever receives this bread will live forever!
As I contemplate St. Paul’s words to us and Christ’s words in the Gospel, I am drawn to the Eucharist. I feel called to more prayer time before the Holy of Holies.
I don’t know where your heart is today. I don’t know how much effort you put into your relationship with Christ. I don’t know if you go to mass daily, have a weekly holy hour, or what your prayer life is like. I don’t know if these scripture readings appeal to you as much as I do. But I know that each of us is called to make a 100% effort today, to try. That each of us should devote more time to Christ today than we did yesterday. I hope today we watch our words and deeds more carefully and abide in His Sacred Heart. If you decide to give it a try today, make the choice of our daily conversion. Choosing Christ this moment, this day, is a victory.
Let’s choose to give our hearts to him today. Let’s choose him and stay with him today.

I was on a plane recently, sitting next to an attorney who specializes in “toxic tort” cases. That means he sues big chemical companies that have hurt ordinary people by failing to take proper safety precautions, often winning millions in settlements for his clients. He was a very sharp and eloquent speaker who also happened to be a Christian.
We were talking about sharing the gospel and he mentioned how he had recently taught his Sunday School class a very important lesson. He told them, “When I speak to the lost, I have to remember that I’m not selling them ‘fire insurance’, I’m selling them a ‘new life’ policy.” He made a good point. As Christians, we know that there is new life in Christ when a person sincerely repents and trusts in the Savior. But I immediately remembered the Scripture that instructs us to “save with fear, and draw them out of the fire” (Jude 23) and the words of Jesus – “Do not fear those who kill the body, but the soul cannot kill. Rather, fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28). So what is it? Are we telling sinners to “flee from the coming wrath” or “come unto Christ for a new and better life”?
A few days earlier I had asked a friend what he thought would happen to him if he died. He thought he was going to heaven. He smoked, he cursed and he partied, but said he was the “good twin” between himself and his identical twin brother. I liked his sense of humor. His life was great – he had a successful career, a healthy family and lots of toys. He was funny, popular and very comfortable in his own skin. Everyone liked him and he liked himself. Life was good.

I knew if I had just offered this guy a “new life” policy, he probably would have turned it down – because he was already living the good life. Instead, I did what Jesus did and aroused His curiosity about how God would deal with His sin on Judgment Day. I told him that “friends don’t let friends go to hell”. Then I walked him through the Ten Commandments to show him how he had sinned against God and desperately needed his forgiveness. When I felt that he was convinced, I shared with him the good news that Jesus had come to save him from sin and its consequences. He could then see the incredible love that God had shown him by sending Jesus to die for him on the cross.
The simple realization that he could be saved from eternal hell, coupled with a humble, repentant belief, changes a person. When sinners understand that their sin is “extremely sinful” and that they deserve eternal damnation for having sinned against the Almighty, then and only then are they ready to understand grace. Only when they see their danger do they want to be saved.
“New life,” biblically speaking, is eternal life in Christ, not a flowery promise of an improvement in life here on earth. The gospel is glorious. It draws our gaze away from us and towards God, who humbled himself, proved his great love by suffering a cruel death on the cross to save us, took into his family those who believe, and transformed us. This is the beautiful gospel that brings life to the dead and changes our hearts.
So if we want to bring that kind of “new life” to those we love, we must do it biblically or risk losing them forever. If we truly care for others, we must strive to follow in Jesus’ footsteps and preach the only true gospel. No “fire insurance” and no “new life” policy, just the old, old gospel and nothing else.
Make sure you bring the knowledge of sin by opening the Commandments as Jesus did (in Mark 10, Luke 18, etc.) and remind sinners of the Day of Judgment when every man will be God accountable for his life. Let the fear of God “work repentance” and let the good news of the gospel bring them to saving faith in Jesus Christ.
