As with many long-running manga series, Dragon Ball releases have been printed with artwork on the spine. As you collect the volumes and place them side by side on your bookshelf, you may find that the spine art creates a larger image or montage! A unique spine art was created for each release—both tankōbon and kanzenban. Dragon Ball also has special spine art appearances in magazines!

Original tankōbon release

The tankōbon spine montage begins with the seven Dragon Balls floating around Shenlong and is followed by various characters (led by Goku riding Kinto-Un) from the series walking down the spine. Akira Toriyama, in his “Ask Me Anything Corner” of Tankōbon, Volume Six, insists that he drew the spine art for the tankōbon releases when they were released, saying he wasn’t sure what he was doing for would draw the spine of the eighth volume. You may also notice that there are a few nice breaks or breaks in the artwork: Volumes 7, 16, 24, 32, and 42.

character appearances

The following characters appear on the original tankōbon back graphic and are listed in order of appearance:

Shenlong, Son Goku, Oolong, Kuririn, Yamcha, Kame-Sen’nin, Pu’er, Bulma, Piccolo, Yajirobe, Karin, Umigame, Lunch (Bad), Son Gohan, Dende, Yajirobe, Ginyu, Freeza (1st grade ) , Vegeta, Kaiō-sama, Cell (Perfect Form), #17, #18, #16 and Son Goku (Super Saiyan).

Yajirobe appears twice

Yajirobe appears twice on the tankōbon back art, which Toriyama actually addresses in the tankōbon volume 29 table of contents:

Here is the table of contents. When I think about it, Yajirobe appears twice on the comic book back image, doesn’t it? I got a lot of letters saying that. I thought it was impossible and looked at the comics I rarely watch and it turned out to be true. I’m really sorry.

dr Slump reference

Kaiō-sama is shown on the spine of Tankōbon Volume 30 walking on a stick with some poop. This is a nod to his previous manga Dr. Slump in which the protagonist Arale is fascinated by poop. She starts poking it with sticks and ends up carrying it around on sticks and using it to freak everyone out. Early on in Dragon Ball, Pilaf’s subordinate Mai also carries poop on a stick, which Pilaf scolds her for, saying that the author wants to make this manga at least a little more stylish.

A 43rd tankōbon volume?

On June 20, 1995, less than a month after Dragon Ball ended in the pages of Weekly Shōnen Jump, the first Daizenshuu (“Full Illustrations”) was published, reprinting the entire back art of the tankōbon. This has caused some confusion over the years as the artwork was printed for 43 spines as opposed to just 42 (see below), with the final spine image being labeled ‘Extra’ or ‘Unused’.

However, it is important to remember that the first Daizenshuu was released less than a month after the release of Volume 41 and over a month before Volume 42. As noted above, Akira Toriyama drew the spine artwork for the tankōbon releases when they were released: he had no idea how far ahead to draw, but knew how thick each volume had been up to that point, which he uses as a reference could. He had most likely already drawn the spine art with Cell (Perfect Form), #17, #18, #16 and Goku (Super Saiyan) when he ended the series abruptly. Due to the abrupt ending, Shueisha decided to cram 34 chapters (17 each) into two tankōbon volumes instead of having three very short volumes. This forced them to edit the spine artwork as the width of the last two volumes had changed. However, since the first daizenshuu was likely completed by the time this change was made, the 43 spine art images in the daizenshuu were printed as Akira Toriyama originally drew them, rather than as actually printed on the tankōbon volumes themselves.

“Refreshed” tankōbon release

In May 2009, Shueisha revamped the tankōbon covers with a new “refreshed” look. Although most of the cover artwork has been preserved, these new issues received newly drawn spine art by Akira Toriyama. Unlike the original tankōbon spine art, in this “refreshed” version, the characters run all the way up through the Majin Boo arc, rather than ending with characters from the Cell arc. Many of the characters originally featured on the tankōbon spine art are not included in this “refreshed” version, particularly any of the artificial humans. While not fully related to spine art, almost everything on the spines of this new version is now written in English, as opposed to Japanese as on the originals.

character appearances

The following characters appear on the original tankōbon back graphic and are listed in order of appearance:

Oolong, Bulma, Pu’er, Kame-Sen’nin, Kuririn, Pilaf, the announcer of Tenka’ichi Budōkai, Chiaotzu, Shuu, Shenlong, Chi-Chi, Son Gohan, Bubbles, Freeza, Kaiō-sama, Yajirobe, Karin , Son Goku, Dende, Bee, Piccolo, Mister Popo, Vegeta, Trunks, Majin Boo, Gotenks and Mister Satan.

Kanzenban release

The Kanzenban Spine is set up in the form of a drag race, pitting Goku and Kuririn (on foot) against Yamcha, Kame-Sen’nin, Piccolo Daimaō, and Vegeta (in vehicles). Various characters watch from the stands and cheer on their friends. Unlike the tankōbon back images, Akira Toriyama knew in advance how many volumes would be created for the release of kanzenban since the series had been completed for years. This really freed his ability to draw an actual scene, rather than characters just running down his back. He also took the opportunity to “shout out” to all the companies that have been involved with the manga over the years.

characters on the sidelines

The following characters appear along the sidelines of the race on the kanzenban backbone graphic and are listed in order of appearance:

Sno, Hatchan (#8), Ninja Murasaki, Pu’er, Bulma, Oolong, Lunch (Good), Umigame, Gyūmaō, Chi-Chi, Pilaf, Shuu, and Mai.

company references

Studio Uccello and Studio K2R are credited as the companies that performed the restoration and editing work on the Kanzenban. Studio Uccello is simply “Bird Studio” (Akira Toriyama’s personal studio) written in Italian, while Studio K2R is the name of the art studio of famous manga artist Masakazu Katsura. The studio’s name is actually the phonetic spelling of Katsura’s name when pronounced in English with a Japanese accent (K=Ka / 2=tsu / R=ra).

The remaining companies should be known to almost every Dragon Ball fan. Bird Studio is Akira Toriyama’s art studio, which takes its name from the first kanji in his family name “tori” (鳥), which means “bird”. Weekly Jump obviously refers to Weekly Shōnen Jump, the publication that released Dragon Ball from November 1984 to May 1995. Capsule Corporation is, of course, the fictional company founded by Bulma’s father, Dr. letter, heard throughout the series.

Original Spine Art Illustration by Akira Toriyama

After the release of the Kanzenban, the spine art was reprinted in the Dragon Ball Chōgashū (“Super Art Collection”). Rather than being an exact reprint of the spine of the book as originally depicted on the kanzenban spine art, the book contained the original spine art illustration drawn by author Akira Toriyama. The original illustration features Tenshinhan and Chiaotzu, both of whom are not featured on the kanzenban spine image because the spine of Volume 34 is cut off just prior to their inclusion in the illustration. The two stand on the sidelines, watching along with everyone else, though engulfed in the smoke of the race. It seems that Shueisha chose not to adjust the drawing horizontally to ensure that the entire illustration fits on the kanzenban volumes, but at least it’s obvious that these two weren’t forgotten by Akira Toriyama.

Saikyō Jump 2015 editions

While Dragon Ball has had many spine art appearances throughout the magazine’s existence, for calendar year 2015 Saikyō Jump presented a special Dragon Ball spine art collection in the style of the tankōbon and kanzenban versions of the series.

At this point in 2015, Saikyō Jump was a bi-monthly publication (with issues released for January, March, May, July, September and November), resulting in spine art comprising six unique images. The January issue image includes splash text stating that the spine art images will be merged from this issue onwards. All spines have generic white text promoting the content of that single issue, but only the November issue’s white promotional text extends into the Dragon Ball spine image.

character appearances

The following characters appear on the spine of Saikyō Jump 2015 editions, listed in order of appearance:

Son Goku, Kuririn, Bulma, Oolong, Pu’er, Vegeta, Trunks, Son Goten, Neko Majin, Boo, Dabra, Frieza (1st Class), Jaco, Great Saiyaman, Piccolo, Upa, Chiaotzu, Tenshinhan, Mr. Satan , Cell (perfect form), Cell Jr., Videl, #18, Whis, Beerus, Yajirobe, Karin, Kaiō-sama, Son Goku (as an adult)

Dragon Ball great
