How do we measure our plants?
Plant sizes are given as pot diameter x total plant height. This means the diameter of the plant pot at the top x the total height of the plant including the plant pot. It therefore includes the plant roots etc. as well as the height or length of the plant.
Please note: plant heights are approximate and for guide purposes only. Plants suitable for hanging may be shown in a hanging plant pot, the actual plant pot used to ship the plant may not include these attachments.
For plants in soil, the key to determining a plant’s maturity and fullness is the diameter of the nursery pot. The larger the diameter, the more mature the plant.
How do we size hydroponic systems?
Hydroponic plants are measured in the same way as soil plants, but the plant pots are measured by diameter plus their standardized height, which allows a water meter to be fitted. For example: an 18/19 grow pot is 18cm in diameter at the rim and 19cm in height.
Hydroponic plant roots have been specially adapted to grow in hydrogranules, creating a smaller, fleshier and more resilient root system. This results in mature plants being available in smaller grow pots than their soil based equivalents.
How do I choose the right size decorative pot for my houseplant?
Check the pot diameter:
Determine the pot diameter of the plant. Compare this to the size of the opening in your chosen decorative pot and make sure it is large enough to fit the plant’s nursery pot through the opening (see image below).
We show the size of the decorative pot openings for each pot if you click on the different size options or hover over the size buttons.
Tip: choose a decorative pot with an opening about 1 cm larger than the pot of the plant. For smaller plants (up to 14cm pots) you should go slightly smaller and for larger plants (over 24cm) you can add 2-3cm without the pot looking too big for the plant.
Note: If the shape of the planter tapers sharply at the base, it may not be wide enough for your plant to sit straight at the bottom. In this case, you can add a liner on a small layer of pebbles to increase the size of the base. However, this will slightly increase the height of the plant in the planter.
For hydroponic plants, use the size tip to select a decorative pot that can accommodate the waterproof liner recommended for the plant in the hydrokit.
Artstone planters contain a non-removable water reservoir that increases the internal base height of the planter. These planters work best when the plant is transplanted directly into them rather than leaving them in their plant pots. If you want to leave the plant in its planter and place it directly into the Artstone planter instead of transplanting the plant directly into the planter, please make sure you choose a large enough size that has enough internal height to hide the growth Pot.
Check the pot height:
Floor Plants – The height of the grow pot may vary slightly, but is usually slightly less than or equal to its diameter. Check if your planter is big enough to hide the planter if you don’t transplant directly into the planter.
Hydroponic Plants – These require a hydro kit for assembly which includes a waterproof pot liner with a base wide enough to accommodate the hydroponic grow pot. The sizing tip provided for each hydroponic plant provides a recommended outside diameter size for the decorative pots that will accommodate the specified waterproof liner.
The pot height is standardized (usually 12cm or 19cm) and is shown in the size option for each hydroponic plant. Make sure the outside height of your decorative pot is at least 2-3 cm higher than the pot height of the hydroponic plant.
Important: The opening size of the decorative pot is the size of the access hole for inserting the plant’s breeding pot and an indication of the required minimum size of the insert. It is not the same as the outside diameter of the pot, which is the overall outside size of the pot. Please note that all measurements are approximate and may vary slightly due to the handwork nature of our pots.
Note: The inserts are “squashy” so they can be slid through the opening to expand and fit closer to the pot wall inside. Liners can also be trimmed with scissors for a better fit if they are slightly curved in at the top.

For ornamental round pots, we give the outside diameter at the widest point to give you an idea of how big the pot is on the outside, as well as the width of the opening. We also give the total height so you understand how tall the pot is.
For square, rectangular and oval planters, we indicate the external dimensions for length x width x height as well as the access width (internal width), as these are often displayed with a plant mix.

Planting tips
Inserts: Modern pots and planters come in all manner of materials from ceramic, natural, composite, metal and fiberglass to create the wow factor in their surroundings. However, not all are waterproof. To keep pots looking pristine and prevent damage to floors and furnishings, the solution is to add a flexible liner inside the pot.
Liners are available in a variety of sizes to fit the internal dimensions of the pot and can be cut to size to create an unobtrusive barrier for the plant and the soil they are to be potted in while protecting the pot from unsightly limescale – or protect fertilizer deposits from the soil.
In larger planters, they allow soil to be contained at an appropriate depth for the plant without having to fill the entire container with soil. This ensures that the root system is surrounded by optimal moisture levels, rather than draining down behind the roots.

Drainage: Traditional houseplant pots have drainage holes and stand in saucers to allow excess water to drain freely. For modern decorative plant pots without drainage holes, the plant pot can stand on a saucer inside the pot or in a pot liner for extra protection. Alternatively, for a more professional look, the plant can be transplanted directly into a potting liner with a layer of hydrogranules to provide both a drainage layer and a reservoir for the plant. The roots above the granules gently pull the water out of the granules (capillary action) to keep them moist but not wet.
Soil Depth: When repotting, leave some space for roots to spread out. The soil should not be so shallow that the roots stand in the water without drainage, nor so deep that the water runs under the roots and the plant dries out.

Tall Planters: Fill the bottom of the planter with polystyrene foam or other packing material that will not compress to the required height, then place the planter liner with the transplanted plant on top.

These should be carefully removed to maintain a tidy appearance.
