The following 10 fragrances have been tested and rated by our team, but I haven’t smelled any of them yet. So for each one, I’ll give my first impressions as well as the considered opinions of the rest of the Gentleman’s Gazette team.
As a side note, all of the fragrances that we will be reviewing are shown at their full retail price at the time of writing this article. Although some can often be found at discount stores, be aware that sometimes you can find counterfeit products by doing so.
The popular fragrances of the 80s and 90s.
1. Calvin Klein obsession for men
This is one of the most iconic and dominant fragrances of the 1980s. Although this wasn’t Klein’s first fragrance, it was one of their most successful fragrances that they produced and it helped make Klein a serious competitor in the market.
Obsession For Men was released in 1986, a year after the successful launch of Obsession For Women. The brand itself was known for being classy and minimalist in its heyday in the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s. The fragrance is sold as clean, versatile and suitable for everyday use. So that fits the image of the brand, but does it also fit the scent?
It’s still packaged in its original packaging: a curved flacon that actually feels a little dated and a little bit feminine. But what to expect from the fact that it came from the 1980s? The price is $82 for 4 ounces or 118 milliliters.

They are not as famous as Obsession, Dior Fahrenheit was released in 1988. Dior as a fashion house has been producing fragrances since 1947, so they weren’t new to the game when they released Fahrenheit.
The brand describes its scent as woody, floral, musky and intense. That sounds pretty busy to us. From that description alone, we can imagine that this will be an acquired taste. This is still packaged in the original bottle which, while fitting the name, looks more like a drugstore product than a department store product. The price is $95 for 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters.

Overall, as far as the team here at Gentleman’s Gazette would actually wear this scent, we can see that most of us would actually rather not wear this scent. It’s a bit outside of each wheelhouse.

3. Davidoff cooling water
Davidoff Cool Water is an icon of this era. In fact, it was launched in 1988. Even men who are not familiar with fragrances will recognize the Davidoff Cool Water name due to the extensive advertising. This is still considered a very common scent. So if you’re looking for something that smells classy but doesn’t stand out too much, this is a great choice.
It’s primarily described as fresh, which makes sense given the name. Some have claimed that this scent is a bit of a scam for Creeds Green Irish Tweed, which would make the value of this scent, if true, amazing. Although they share some similarities in the top notes, we don’t agree on this as they have differences in both the base and middle notes. They really become two different scents over time.
Cool Water by Davidoff

My first impression upon smelling it was that you can never get enough of Cool Water. It’s a clean and fairly contemporary scent that suits many different personalities and ages. This is something I would recommend having in a collection. The price is $75 for 4.2 ounces or 124 milliliters.
Some say Cool Water was a dupe of Creed’s Green Irish Tweed.

One person remarked, “It’s light and fresh. They noted that there is baking spice in the background and that it has hints of warmth, mint and vanilla.” One person went ahead and called this a “Douchey” scent. Another wrote that it smelled like cheap mint shower lotion. And another wrote: “It seems like big companies are ditching this scent for cheap hotels and cheap body wash.”
Overall, the team agreed that most people were willing to at least wear this scent.

4. Acqua di Gio for Homme

Another person wrote: “There’s an Abercrombie and Fitch ease to this. A little precursor to what many fragrance brands will actually use.”
Overall, the team agrees that most of us would actually consider wearing this scent. But not with Raphael. He felt it was too pedestrian.

One person wrote that it had aniseed top notes. They found that when aniseed is mixed with other scents, it smells quite pleasant. One person noted the vanilla and baking spices and a hint of mint. One person remarked that the bottle was well stocked. And others remarked on the very dominant vanilla and how unique the scent actually is.
When I first smelled this I really enjoyed the spice and vanilla combo. I think this scent would be intriguing to those who happen to smell you without overwhelming everyone else’s noses.
Most of the team realized that they would wear this scent. Not Raphael though as he felt there was a bit too much vanilla on the finish.

7 . Givenchy Gentleman
Givenchy Gentleman was launched in the 1970s, although there is some confusion as different sources state either 1974 or ’75. We mistakenly saw 1994 as the start date when we included it in today’s list, and while it’s therefore a chronological outlier in this group, it’s still in good company with other 70’s fragrances that we’ve covered, such as Paco Rabanne Pour Homme and Creed’s Green Irish Tweed. The price is $89 for 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters.

My first impression of Givenchy Gentleman was, “Wow, that smells like success.” At first, this fragrance comes across as a bit strong, but as long as you don’t fully immerse yourself in it, I think it will be great for a sophisticated and mature individual. Overall, the general consensus among most team members was that we actually wouldn’t wear this scent.
The team would definitely NOT wear this scent.
8. Calvin Klein CK One
Like its predecessor Obsession, Calvin Klein CK One became an iconic and hugely popular fragrance when it was launched in the 1990s. This is actually one of the first to be introduced as a unisex fragrance. This suited the brand very well at the time, as they constantly featured models, men and women, wearing the same underwear. One person commented that it was very chalky and not as pungent as other chalky scents. In the description we see pineapple and green notes as top notes. And the rest of the team noted soft citrus rounded off by other scents. Another person remarked, “It’s definitely a unisex fragrance; it doesn’t mean too far from being either too feminine or too masculine.” And another person noted that it’s a crowd puller, but not overly so.
When I first smelled this I realized that I’m not usually into very strong scents, but if you take a minute you’ll find that the intensity seems to melt away and you’ll end up with a very bearable scent . I particularly like the hints of tangerine and the green notes.
Overall, the Gentleman’s Gazette team states that they would consider wearing this fragrance.

Another noted that it’s not traditionally masculine, but calling it unisex might be a bit of an exaggeration. And another remarked: “It smells like it was made by a Frenchman.”
When I smelled it for the very first time I had to admit I was quite surprised, but actually I liked it as much as I did. Although I shouldn’t be too surprised as I’m a little ahead of the scents of cedar or sandalwood notes. While this isn’t my favorite or my first choice, I could see myself thinking about wearing this scent on occasion.
However, it seems that most of the team would prefer not to wear this scent.

From this list I would say today that my personal favorite is probably the Aqua Di Gio. I love how clean and light this scent is. But I’d say if I were to talk about what kind of scents I would typically choose, as mentioned before, I kind of really find myself with things with woody, cedar and sandalwood notes; Things that have some leather or tobacco smell, mint, citrus notes in there too. Nothing too overwhelming, but things with combinations like this are the things my nose is usually drawn to.

While I personally didn’t partake in the splendor of the most iconic perfumes of the 80’s, my mom and I looked at several names together and she definitely remembers the popularity of nine specific scents. She herself was a casual wearer of anything she could get her hands on and had no particular favorite scent. My dad, on the other hand, still wears a Stetson and Brut, so it’s fair to say that some brands from the ’80s will never (nor have to) die.
Long live the fascination of the 80s, I say. A smell can work wonders by taking you back in time. If only there was a way to transmit scents through computer screens, I would do it. For now, all I have to do is enjoy their legacy.

Drakkar Noir has been an integral part of the fragrance world for a long, long time. It’s so prevalent that it’s been joked about in popular culture based on people dousing themselves with it, but there are still plenty of people who swear by it. In fact, this Guy Laroche fragrance is one of the absolute classics from the 1980s, and you can’t manage to be a “garbage” cologne for almost 40 years. It has always been one with a complex blend and personality that has many facets that are not always appreciated. In this post I want to throw in my two cents on Drakkar Noir and finally give it a proper rating on this site. How it smells, how it works, when to wear it and if it’s worth buying.

Drakkar Noir seems to have been around for ages, at least older than my existence. That being said, what accounts for its continued success over three decades after its release? Well, I guess it’s because of how “classic” a scent comes across.
It just feels old school like a fresh bar of soap or men’s shaving cream. Drakkar Noir is dark and masculine from the start, yet remains very clean throughout. It has a certain attitude and style that defines this decade of fragrances that is not at all found in many modern releases.
There are so many aquarium and sauvage clones out there that an older option like Drakkar is becoming increasingly attractive.
Heck, even Drakkar Flanker’s latest release, Drakkar Essence, was pretty ho-hum and not much to write home about.
My full wear review
The opening of the fragrance brings out an aroma of oakmoss and lavender notes. It’s quite a dry and mellow start with support from leather, a cinnamon spice and some citrus notes. It’s a really fresh and masculine clean scent that has a ‘showered’ aroma on the skin.
The bergamot-citrus has its moment to shine early before being pushed into the background. I prefer how the lemon and bergamot notes come through here. They never dominate, but they are perceptible, almost fleeting in their presentation.
Another note that shines in the beginning is the super crisp mint note. It definitely brings a cool air to the composition, it’s that usual sharp spice that contrasts very well with the notes of lavender, oakmoss and leather. It all comes together as being truly green, vegetal and outdoors. This is the basic formula for about 30-45 minutes.
An important aspect of Drakkar Noir is how complicated it can be. There’s a lot of notes in there. Different types of wood, flowers, herbs, etc. Sometimes your nose picks up an individual note above the rest. Other times, you really don’t know what you’re smelling, other than a pleasant scent. It gets fuzzy and quite difficult to pick out individual ingredients compared to how easy it can be with simpler colognes.
With all the woody notes, it has that green-herbal scent that you would expect. As Drakkar dries up, I get more leather and spice than when I started, and the cologne retains its manliness. The dry down is the best part of this fragrance in my opinion.
It’s darker, warmer, and has a different type of spiciness than the cleaner/soapier beginning. At this point it’s a perfect earthy scent, like the right balance of woods and herbs to create something quite attractive.
During drying I get: Lavender, Pine, Leather, some Patchouli, Moss, Cinnamon and some other herbs/woods.
how strong is it Does Drakkar last long?
In terms of projection, Drakkar is still pretty darn good in that regard. I know it’s been reformulated over the years and while I don’t have a vintage bottle to compare it to, it still projects well. Due to government regulations, there are certain grades (like pure oakmoss) that you can no longer use.
Since this was a core part of Drakkar, of course it will have an effect. But that wasn’t the only one that dropped or was watered down, it’s so hard to maintain the greatness of a vintage scent.
However, the most recent incarnations of Drakkar I’ve tried were neither too weak nor too powerful. They were moderate but noticeable. Longevity can be good or bad, but six hours seems average and sometimes it just takes a long time. It’s an odd smell the way it works and I wish it could still be that classic beast mode.
Drakkar is a solid casual or night time scent and I think it works best in late fall or winter. Its dry and woody spiciness really hangs well in the fresh air. This is one that can be versatile everyday wear for many men, and while the demographic is older, a younger man could definitely still wear this. In fact, many younger men used to wear this.
I have to say that I don’t think it’s that great in the summer months. The heat is less of a problem than the humidity, which can wreak havoc on Drakkar’s performance.
Overall impression of Drakkar Noir
Overall, is Drakkar Noir worth buying? Yes, but it doesn’t blow my mind. I think it’s pretty good. It doesn’t suit my personal style, but I can certainly appreciate it. Maybe I would have enjoyed the vintage formulation a lot more than the current one.
It’s nice to wear from time to time, but I have so many other options. For many men, this will work extremely well as an everyday signature scent. It is an interesting fragrance that was a milestone in the history of men’s fragrances.
This is the kind of classic Fougere flavor you have to enjoy. Lavender, leather, woods and herbs. It definitely gets points for complexity. Try it, it’s very affordable.

Cologne vs Perfume: What’s the Difference?
What is the difference between cologne and perfume? This may seem like a fundamental question. Perfumes exude a sense of femininity, while colognes are more masculine. But the difference between the two is not gendered at all. Both consist of essential oils that are mixed on an alcohol basis. Perfumes, however, have a higher concentration of essential oils, allowing them to follow the wearer throughout the day—even after just a quick spritz. While colognes generally consist of the same makeup, they generally contain far fewer essential oils. Therefore, the odor lasts only a few hours and is incredibly reduced. It just adds a hint – something a little extra.
Because they contain so much more of the pure essential oils, perfumes tend to be a bit more expensive. And because her scent is far more vibrant and lingering, her bottles are commonly found in women’s toilets around the world – not in men’s secure toilet drawers.
The way perfumes and colognes are worn is also incredibly different. Perfume is sprayed in small amounts from afar; Large amounts rubbed onto skin can cause irritation, headache, and nausea. Eau Fraiche: This is a feminine term for sprays with a very low concentration of oils. So it’s technically a cologne – specifically for women. Scientifically, it contains less than 3% oils and usually no alcohol. It is literally “fresh water”;
Eau de Cologne (or EDC): It’s at the end of the concentration spectrum, around 3-8%, and is generally sold in large 200ml bottles. The stuff can be applied over and over again by spraying or rubbing as it only lasts about 2 hours. It is particularly suitable in the summer months;
Eau de toilette (or EDT): This is the most popular of all the generically feminine forms of perfume and cologne. It usually contains around 10-20% concentration of essential oils. The first scents after spraying – the top notes – are refreshing and eager. They only linger briefly before descending into the middle and base notes. Like the cologne above, eau de toilette is generally accepted in the summer. It is sold in 100ml bottles;
Eau de Parfum (or EDP): The base of Eau de Parfum focuses on its heart and base notes. The top notes may not have much to show off in Eau de Parfum, but the lingering scent walks through. Therefore, it is often used for hair and clothing – not just for the skin. The concentration of essential oils is between 15 and 30% and is cheaper than normal perfume – with the same longevity. It is sold in 50ml bottles;
Perfume: It is called Perfume Extract or Extrait and is the most expensive bottle on the shelf. But it’s definitely the real stuff. Its top, heart and base notes interact with each other; They descend from top to bottom offering a whole range of different olfactory experiences, landing gracefully on top of the base heart notes. The essential oils are high up to 40%, thus offering the best longevity of the perfume and cologne crew. You only use a tiny amount: on the pulse points, behind the ears, on the neck or on the insides of the wrists. These are your most personal and precious places: you wouldn’t just put perfume everywhere. The perfume lasts around 6-8 hours: all day or all night long.
